“Without being Pretentious” Yes, getting that tape at the end of the 10 minute hallway wasn’t pretentious at all, not to mention you have to walk all the way back
@@Sardine_Sandwich That's not what pretentious means. What he means is that the story in Neverhood doesn't insist that it's an analogue to the bible or other such fables, it merely implies it by existing and making references. The audience has to dig that up and recognize it otherwise it goes completely unnoticed. Pretentiousness is rooted in pretense and typically it's negative when the pretense is the heart of the story and the front end is the facade. There is no facade in the neverhood so it's not pretentious.
One of the best things about this story is that it's spread out across a bunch of tiny disks that are scattered throughout the game, out of order. So, you have to progress a bit further until you get to know things like why Hoborg had to create, because the disk ends right before "...he had to."
I love how there's not just these disks to tell this story in the game, but also a giant hallway of lore that's literally the size of a book you can read as well.
I was 11 years old when this game came out, and I think the joke that made me immediately fall in love with this game is a stupid letter you get in your mailbox early on that said: Klaymen, How do you spell Hoborg? Love, Willie
I played it when I was 5, in 2000, ah memories, but I was stuck in doors with water lock, I came back to this game when I was 20 and when I finished it the feeling I had were overwhelming
If only Hoborg just tried to talk sense into Klogg about being good and stuff, Klogg wouldn't have become power hungry and therefore wouldn't have turned into the evil dude that we know him.
Looking back, I wonder if Klogg might have turned out better if the first thing he heard wasn't "everything you see here is yours." Hoborg was just too generous for his own good.
For some reason, I find Willie Trombone really motivational, I just feel like him believing in Klaymen, not ever assuming he'd be anying like Klogg, and just generally wanting the best for him, is the most wholesome thing.
These disks tell a story. Story about good. Story about bad. These disks are all that are left of the true story. True story of the closing of the third age
I remember going through it, where when you first find the disc player, you watch the few discs you have thus far, and youthink; “cute, so the game decided to have a bit of a plot.” But after a few acquaintances have died, and you’re figuring out who’s up against, you get to another player and finally see the uninterrupted story, and it’s actually really poignant and puts the game’s world in a new light, and you start to feel the gravity of your mission. And then Willie’s video recording deadass chucks the access key THROUGH THE SCREEN at you.
I like how Klogg steals the crown, giving him complete rule over the Neverhood, and then does nothing with it. He doesn't even ever wear it again. Also why would he offer it to Klaymen, and why didn't Klogg freeze solid in the bad ending when Klaymen wore it? I realize the ending alludes to temptation (since it's a retelling of the book of Genesis), but it still needs to make sense. There still needs to be consistency.
I think the reason Klogg tried to offer Klaymen the crown is so that Klaymen could become like him cuz he knows that once taken the bait Klaymen would never put the crown back on Hoborg's head after that and therefore Klogg could still be the ruler but in the bad endning that backfired when Bad Klaymen knocked out/killing Klogg directly after the transformation. The reason Klogg didn't freeze because he was the creation of Hoborg and therefore are not bound to Hoborg, who is a son of Quater, who's like a God-like figure (although since their was a Father who is the dad of Quater, he most likey would be God while Quater is sort of a lesser god and his many sons even lesser-gods), the curse of the crown only affects Hoborg (and possibly his brothers like Ottoborg, Willie's dad) cuz the crowns are the source of life for Hoborg and his brothers.
Well that first thing is definitely intentional, it's a statement about greed. Klogg didn't actually care about the crown itself or its creative powers, he was just mad that someone had something that he didn't. You see it in real life all the time with people who lust for power. They want power for power's sake, not because they have a vision.
CuteEwok Wow, that was a long time ago. Anyway, I know it's kinda obvious, I have no idea why I felt like pointing it out. Probably was high or something.
This may just be me speaking out of my own Christian, Western, desensetized rear end, but aside from unsubtle "protagonist = Jesus" and equality unsubtle "convert to my faith" type stuff, I personally think that the tales and imagery of the Abrahamic religions are underutilized in popular storytelling. It's a shame, because I also think they're rife with unique stories and evocative moments, and in the right hands they can be adapted into media with lasting and unique appeal, including this, The Prince of Egypt, and VeggieTales.
@Bolastwo Now that you brought up the name, I agree. I'd also bring up Cain and Abel since Hoborg and Clog are both equally physical and Clog put Hoborg in a _deep slumber_ (somehow I couldn't think of a wording that doesn't reference Bionicles) out of jealousy.
Doug TenNapel is amazing, the designs are an inspiration to me. And whoever did the writing is excellent. So simple. The Animation is pretty spiffy too. And besides, Klogg's voice. Smooth like peanut butter. I congratulate the crew.
"A being who had to create, because... he had to." This line is even funnier in-game. You don't get to hear the whole story at once until the very end of the game; you have to piece it together by collecting 20 disks scattered around the Neverhood. The fourth disk ends on "because..." You have to find the fifth disk just to learn that there is essentially no reason. So, if you haven't found the fifth disk yet when you watch the fourth one, you're essentially left on the least satisfying cliffhanger ever made.
It's funny how i keep coming back to this video at some point of my life. Last comment i left was 5 years ago, wonder about the next time ;) PS Armikrog is soon to be released (18th August) hope it lives up to the neverhoods dream.

I was reading about this (haven't played the game in YEARS!). It's 38 screens of the history. If you google "define: Neverhood" you get a transcription of the history. Someone had a lot of time on their hands!"
The best thing is that the "because..." is at the end of one of the video disks. And you don't find the next one until a while after. So you'll be watching that and thinking "because... because why?!" and then you find that one disk and you're like "Woohoo, gap filled! Because... he had to." Well, of course... I love this game. I tend to forget about it, but I want to say this is my most favorite game of all time. Best game I've ever played.

I was wrong, pay no attention to my previous comment. Ottoborg, one of the sons of Quater, created Willy and 6 other sons. He also built Bil the robot. However, the world Ottoborg created for him and his sons fell apart. The chunk of land Willy inhabited drifted away (Bil the robot eventually floated into it on the land's journey) Willy's house and Bil finally fell into the Neverhood as Hoborg was making it. @aekuis By reading the Neverhood Hall of Records, of course :) You can find a written version online. It's also in the game, and takes five whole minutes to walk down, nevermind the time it takes to read the entire wall, which documents everything that's happened in the worlds of Hoborg and his six brothers. Some are ridiculously long because they just list a buttload of names, but there's some real interesting stuff, even what the seven sons of Quater all look like. Otto's one of the best, IMO.
