Sometimes, the lead stallion can have a co-stallion who is either their brother or close friend. They may scuffle but they generally share the mares and protect them together.
Actually, the young mares (fillies) are also expelled from the herd around the time of their first heat. While the colts will form batchelor bands, the fillies will be quickly picked up by roving stallions and added to their herds. This prevents inbreeding. Wild mustangs will not normally breed with their offspring unless forced to do so.

This is surprisingly accurate and amazingly presented 😂 But a couple corrections if I might be so bold: 1) There is no leader (or dominant horse, etc.) in a horse band. The stallion is not the "leader" (and there's no "lead mare" as many have heard. Another pervasive myth). Any horse can initiate group movement. There's no linear hierarchy. It's the same situation as with dogs and wolves: dominance theory has no scientific basis and these animals naturally live in cooperative family groups where honey catches the most flies 2) Stallions actually do chase off fillies (female foals) in addition to colts (though not always). This is a form of incest avoidance because obviously mating with your daughters forevermore wouldn't be a great evolutionary strategy 3) Mares do more than birth and rear young. They protect their foals and can lead the group, as can any horse, meaning stallions aren't the "leader to food and water". Stallions also play with their offspring, helping to rear them and allowing mares a break. Again, it's a cooperative family group, not a hierarchy 4) Mares don't just mindlessly walk off with a new stallion. They form bonds with their stallions (and vice-versa) who they likely live with for years. I got way too into researching horse behavior a while back! Modern research has actually been demonstrating that the stallion of a herd is *not* the leader but rather the *enforcer* of the leader. The stallion does not choose or lead where the herd goes, but instead acts as both the protector of the herd but also the “herding dog” to make sure the mares and foals stay together and nobody wanders off. Its believed that the oldest mare is a more traditional “leader” but its also been observed that herds also rotate “leaders” in movement (as in, herds are not reliant on a single horse knowing/deciding where the best grazing is, horses are not extremely smart so its more just instinct to follow whatever horse seems to be confidently running. Domestic horse owners have commented on this behavior)

Realistically, horses are actually matriarchal. The oldest and strongest mare is the 'leader' who directs the herd. The stallion does fend of predators and other rival stallions but they're not exactly in charge.
I’ve noticed a lot of women take offense to any animal kingdom having a male animal protector and instantly go to the “bUt iTs a MaTrIaCh because of the old wise female animal” y’all seem defensive almost like y’all are trying to one up male animals lol

"Rehab was supposed to be a fresh start, but no matter how many starts i get, there's always the same ending. Everything falls apart, and i end up alone."
Great video! While not the most accurate, it is fun and pretty close. I would say this video is more about plains zebra behavior than feral horses. If people are wondering about accuracy: A herd is made up of multiple bands, in this video we see one familial band. While a harem can roam alone, it is rare for harems not to group up with other bands. Stallions don't need to drive out their colts. Stallions don't lead their group in migration, instead a mare (usually) will initiate the movement. The stallion instead focuses on herding his group from danger including rivals. Stallion bachelor groups rarely have linear hierarchy and rarely have a leader. Mares don't have to go with the victor nor do they have to leave their current stallion. Individual mares can be stolen away. Stallions can kill offspring of previous stallions. If you're wondering about mares: Mares can leave their natal band but typically stay (unless driven out by their father). They will usually stay until a stallion steals them/invites them out of the band. Mares form close bonds with each other and will often stick together even when the family stallion changes, however, they can disperse and also hold hierarchy amongst themselves. Often there is a dominant mare who is the most dominant mare seen via resource guarding and fights. She is the mare most likely to initiate movement as she's the most trusted. Mares can live without stallions in mare bands or live alone (rarely). Mares can be loyal to their stallion or leave whenever they deem fit.
This guy somehow really captures what it's like to go from being a kid to the adults you once looked up to and how it never really feels like you are that same intimidating force, since because you know your own story, in your mind, you're always just you.
I think there's a plot hole here 6:05 He was born with his dad already in charge, so he didn't get to see his leader earn his own mares, only defend them, where he presumably won every time, unless his dad was beaten at some point and was replaced with the new leader who he's referring to.

I got bit in the head by a horse as a kid. I was feeding the horse hay, and it reached down, unprovoked and picked me up by the skull. I for one a glad horses have a tough life.
Horses typically dont do it without being provoked 😅. If you werent looking at body language that it was trying to back off and not be touched before it to asses you as a threat it likely would attack without warning, ie what happened to you. Also kids around that age like to yank on their hair and dont pet gently. Could also be a factor. Again horses are animals, prey animals. Do if they cannot flee they will fight.
The horse was giving you warning signs that you missed. Animals in general don't normally attack unprovoked, unelss there's something wrong with their brain (like how it can happen with dogs).
As an equestrian, I’ll tell you this is pretty accurate. But there are a few mistakes. 1.) Colts are actually kicked out from 1-2. Not 2. It’s between those ages. And if the stallion wants to, he can kick out a 1-2 year old filly when she has her first period (heat). She’ll be taken in by some rogue stallions and they’ll make their own family. But this rarely happens. 2.) Stallions won’t take on one bachelor stallion at a time, sometimes, he’ll be fighting multiple all at once. So buddies aren’t usually cheering each other on, they’re trying to take the leader on as well. 3.) There isn’t just a stallion in charge, there’s also a lead mare. The lead mare is usually the stallion’s favorite and the one he mates with the most. The stallion is in charge of mating and protecting the herd while the lead mare is in charge of making decisions. 4.) Stallions are never in the front. Sometimes they are, but usually they aren’t. The lead mare is the one who’s in the front for she leads the way. The stallion will be in the back to keep an eye out for potential dangers. 5.) Once a stallion takes over a herd and kicks out the old one, he’ll pull an Anakin Skywalker and actually KILL the old stallion’s foals! They don’t always do this, but a lot of times they do and they do it to eliminate the old stallion’s bloodline. It doesn’t matter if the foal is a colt or a filly, if you’re from the old stallion, you’re done for and mama can’t save you no matter how hard she tries 💔 Anyways, those are the only inaccuracies in the video. Everything else is SPOT ON! Great job 👏🏻❤️
Love how entertaining and educating this video is! Can you make a racccoon one next? My daughter of 6 has cancer and has been down a couple of days. I'm sure she would appreciate her fav animal Cheers!
Horses have a matriarchy and oldest mare makes the decisions, and leads the way, not the stallion. He keeps in the back of the herd to keep it together. Also there are other stallions in the herd and main stallion is pretty chill with the bachelor bands, unless a mare is in heat. Horses generally avoid aggression.

The herd isn’t solely led by the stallion. While the lead stallion protects the group from threats and keeps rivals away, it’s the lead mare who makes key decisions, like when and where the herd moves to graze, drink, or rest. Leadership in wild horse herds is a team effort between the lead mare and the stallion
Also the Hierarchy for the males isnt determined with violence but with temperament and deference so the most dominant and outspoken personality is the lead stallion and the most submissive is the bottom stallion

So you're saying horses aren't big fancy ponies with a lushious lifestyle like portrayed in media?
Honestly, most domestic horses are spoiled rotten, and many actively enjoy having a job. I've seen grown horses prance and hop around like an excited foal at the prospect of getting to do their favorite thing. Many humans and dogs love having a job, is it any wonder that horses would be the same?
@@silverdemonwolf426 There's a video of a bullfighting horse teasing a bull, no lead, no rider. He just seemed to enjoy doing it on his own.
@@Badficwriter I recently read one post on Facebook from an owner of a senior horse who was pushing 30 who had enjoyed barrel racing her whole life. To the point that she actively had to stop her old mare from escaping to run the barrels by herself when her owner was practicing. Sin separates us from God, but through Jesus's sacrifice on the cross, we're offered forgiveness and a restored relationship with God if we repent and believe on Him.
John 3:16-18
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. 18 The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Realistically, horses are actually matriarchal. The oldest and strongest mare is the 'leader' who directs the herd. The stallion does fend of predators and other rival stallions but they're not exactly in charge.
Yeah this vid really makes it seem like the stallion is the leader when he’s really the guard
I’ve noticed a lot of women take offense to any animal kingdom having a male animal protector and instantly go to the “bUt iTs a MaTrIaCh because of the old wise female animal” y’all seem defensive almost like y’all are trying to one up male animals lol
@ but like it’s not factually accurate imao. The stallion is definitely the protector but he’s not the one who makes the decisions for the herd. Not denying his role his role is very important imao

Why does this Lowkey sound like a really good audio book.... Like this is a good story....
Watching these videos makes me appreciate life more
Defeated band stallions often rejoin bachelor herds in their twilight years for company.
That’s good to know

@@Dinzo.1 you should’ve mentioned new born horse hooves
I got bit in the head by a horse as a kid. I was feeding the horse hay, and it reached down, unprovoked and picked me up by the skull. I for one a glad horses have a tough life.
Jesus. How bad did that hurt? They got crazy chompers.
Your fault. It’s not their fault
The horse was giving you warning signs that you missed. Animals in general don't normally attack unprovoked, unelss there's something wrong with their brain (like how it can happen with dogs).
Horse racism. They wouldn’t all have done that
You’ve only made 5 videos and you’re already my favourite TH-camr, that’s saying something.
Watch James toland he’s the og who started these videos
It doesn’t matter if the foal is a colt or a filly, if you’re from the old stallion, you’re done for and mama can’t save you no matter how hard she tries 💔
Anyways, those are the only inaccuracies in the video. Everything else is SPOT ON! Great job 👏🏻❤️

I thought this was a video essay of Bojack Horseman.
@@reoij It actually is. He's just never referred to by name in this video.
