A great upbeat song. Hartman wrote this for the 1984 movie Streets of Fire, where it was performed by the fictional group The Sorels, with the actor Stoney Jackson playing their lead singer, Bird (they do a sweet moonwalk at the line "moving sidewalks" when they perform it in the movie). The real voice behind the version used in the film was Winston Ford, but Hartman's version was the one used on the soundtrack and released as a single. The song also appeared on Hartman's album I Can Dream About You

Hartman was never married and had no children. He died on March 22, 1994, at his Westport, Connecticut, home from an AIDS-related brain tumor. A closeted gay man, he was diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s. He kept his HIV status a secret and supposedly did not seek treatment, even after friend and intermittent collaborator Holly Johnson (formerly of the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood) announced his own HIV status in 1991 His remains were cremated; he was survived by both parents, his brother Dave, and sister Kathy. Their stage names were Bird, B. J. , Reggie, and Lester. The quartet was created for the movie STREETS OF FIRE, for which this song is a major part of the soundtrack.
The Sorels wanted to step out as a real group but time allowed all four of them to find big success under their real names of Stoney Jackson, Mykel T. Williamson, Grand L. Bush and Robert Townsend.

Dan Hartman was a talented young man that was taken too soon. His first real break was when he joined Edgar Winter's Band in which he played bass on the song you've reacted to "Frankenstein". Dan did a lot of production for that band and for Edgar's brother, Johnny. Dan later went on to do one of, if not my favorite dance songs "Relight My Fire" which was a huge hit, along with "Love Sensation" which he wrote and produced for the great singer Loletta Holloway. Both of which I far prefer to this, although good, cut.

I've read some of the comments and as other people have pointed out Dan was a Hired hand bass player for the Edgar Winter group. There is a kick-ass killer live video of the Edgar Winter band playing the song Free Ride... Cuz every time Dan opens the song playing the six string electric guitar and then as it kicks in he switches over to a four string bass guitar and sings the lead vocal. The guitar he's playing is a double neck so six string guitar and a 4-string bass but it's amazing to watch. And his vocals were great.

There were two music videos to this song at the time. The other one focuses exclusively on the actors from the movie "Streets of Fire". I think the label as well as Hartman was not expecting the song to be as huge as it was so they made a second video once the song climbed the charts featuring Dan Hartman himself who sang and wrote this 80's masterpiece (and played most of the instruments, produced it all himself, etc). Y'all can't listen to Dan Hartman without listening to one of the most legendary disco or what's now called house music classics of all-time that he made feat. the legendary Loletta Hollaway. Vertigo/Relight My Fire and it's gotta be the full extended mix.

The video being watched in the bar is from the film Streets of Fire. In the movie, those dudes who were performing the song on stage were the fictional group called The Sorels. But the voice you actually hear is Dan Hartman.
You should check out two other great tunes from the movie called Tonight is What it Means to be Young and Nowehere Fast. Both were written by Jim Steinman (who partnered with Meat Loaf for the Bat Out of Hell album) and sung by Fire Inc., a studio band put together by Steinman, just for Streets of Fire.

Dan Hartman was huge in the 70's and in to the 80's, he had hits with Instant Replay, Re-light My Fire, This Is It, sadly missed RIP

This song is featured in streets of fire. It’s an excellent movie, watch it sometimes. The movie is like a rock & roll fantasy with a damn good cast and story line.

Dan was born in Dauphin County Pennsylvania. He built a bass guitar suit in which the body of the guitar was built into the jump suit!

You two have seen Dan Hartman before - he played bass guitar with the Edgar Winter Group, amongst many others. Check out “ Frankenstein”.
