According to Wikopedia, he died in 1994 from a brain tumor. It says he was "a closeted gay," and was HIV positive. Never married and no children. Poor guy. He must have suffered a lot. VERY talented.
This was everywhere back in the day. I was there for it and liked it then. Still here for it today. Love to see you discovering our generations music, Tasha. You gotta be one of my all time favorite reactors to the music. Keep-a-rockin. Later.
Here's some suggestions of artists I haven't seen many reactions to Grayson Hugh "Talk it over" Jude Cole "Baby it's tonight" "Houseful of reasons" "Time for letting go" Henry Lee Summer "Wish I had a girl" "I've got everything" Curtis Stigers "Never saw a miracle" "You're all that matters to me" "Sleeping with the lights on" "I wonder why" Paul Carrack "Don't shed a tear" "I need you" "I live by the groove" "Happy to see you again"
So, you said it was "a performance within a performance" ... it's actually even more complicated than that. Dan Hartman wrote the song. He's the singing bartender in the video. He agreed to let them use the song in the movie "Streets of Fire". He produced the song, but it was sung by a guy named Winston Ford. That version was used in the movie, lip-synced by "The Sorrels" a fictitious group from the movie. They're the guys in the suits performing the song on the TV in the video. Hartman didn't think Ford's vocals did the song justice, so he re-recorded the song, singing the vocals himself everything else is the same. By the time Hartman finished, though, the movie was done, so the Winston Ford vocalized version is in the film, but Dan Hartman's version was in the soundtrack and video. The only way you can hear the version Winston Ford sang is to watch the movie. You said you thought you'd seen it in a movie, but you hadn't seen Streets of Fire. It was also in Madagascar and they used it in a episode of The Resident. It was also in Grand Theft Auto, so if you're a gamer, maybe that's where you saw it.
Dan wrote "Living In America" performed by James Brown...saw him with Edgar Winter in 1974.
