Okay lighters do not contain actual Flint or rock, it is actually very small ferrocerium rods, the same as firesteel Firestarters. It is a mix of magnesium and iron and some other metals I don't remember lol.
Yes, it's a mixture of cerium, which burns at a very low temperature, and some rare earth metals: lanthanum, neodymium and praseodymium, with a little bit of iron and magnesium too. The name "ferrocerium" comes from the original alloy, which was purified cerium with 30% iron.
"lighter firebomb": -Open the safety valve until the gas comes out without the need to push the button -light the flame -throw the lighter on the ground so that it explodes (it usually happens with lighters without any flame) The flame should be big enough to ignite the expanding gas from the explosion, creating a quite big fireball. I discovered this because, while playing with the valve of a lighter to see how big the flame would get, the lighter caught fire and releasing the button did not close the flame, so i threw it off the balcony because i feared it could explode in my hand: when it hit the concrete, it exploded making a huge fireball... fortunately there was noone around.
one time, I was at a weekend camp on my local sports club, and me and a couple mates were fucking around with fireworks next to one of the roofed football courts. being an enclosed space, you can imagine how those firecrackers banged in there. our coach caught us, and confiscated the lighter..... two seconds after, he threw it against a wall, ten feet away. boom. "see? I made my own firecracker." we: :(
Jason Murphy Okay so I actually got that one book for Christmas thinking it was kind of cheesy. Then I saw he episode where you made body armor, and I was like "Hey, that's in my book!" Now it's confirmed.
It's just magnesium rod. Same stuff survival fire starters are made of. Unfortunately once it starts burning it's allmost impossible to put out. Keep that in mind kids.
reminds me a little of a trick an old friend showed me, you use Brians' trick to get the flame larger, then you light it and turn it upside down so that the actual plastic part with the fuel in it catches fire and lob it at the ground, explodes really loud but not reallybright like this, would probably work well as a distraction. just gotta be careful my friend copped a bit of molten plastic to the face doing that.
I learned that if you cover it in napalm first it works better but you have to make sure there is zero water in the napalm or it might fling flaming napalm at you
I used to do this as a kid in the 90s. It was a pain with taking apart lighters but when I found out you can actually buy bulk flints for Zippo lighters.
That book alone is gonna lead to some of my favorite improvised insanity I can already tell. By the way since I saw him in the comments hi Jason! Loved you in that short film about the fire alarms.

Okay, so I am going to throw it out there that I am a huge fan of the facts that come up during different parts of the segment. Really nice added touch with some of that old school VH1 Pop-Up Video vibe. Keep this.
Theres an easier way, Here in Scotland we call disposable lighters Bangers, If you throw it at the ground hard enough the lighter will elxplode and a ploom of smoke will pop up, Well not smoke but gas, Most of the time the gas dosent ignite
yeah, but it just makes bang. If you really slam the firestones down if they are glowing you get a fountain of bright sparks. The video is a bit underwhelming on showing the actual effect.
Okay, I understand your process of doing this and how it all works. what gets me is that you now have a bunch of broken unusable lighters with fluid in them. I was shown a trick when I was about 14 about how if you take the entire lighter, leaving it completely intact, and throw it at the ground like Jason did it explodes. Less set up time, about same cost, and now there is a quick concussion sound to go with it. This all work by the same principle of the flint sparking, but now it is sparking all the fluid at one time. So again, the fuller the lighter the bigger the bang. Also throwing it on the ground means throwing it at a solid hard ground like Concrete or Asphalt. Try it out and see how you like it. Oh! I forgot watch out for the cap. it becomes a projectile. Good Luck to all those Modern Rogues that read and try this. Disclaimer, I didn't not tell you to try this. I am not at fault. And sometimes it doesn't work, I recommend throwing it harder!
Did this and reacted exactly the same as Brian - somewhere between childlike delight and terror. Surprised how little you actually need to heat the flint. Science is fun.
You can wedge the metal cover under the valve and light that lighter with another one and it will burn until the heat melts the plastic, and the remaining butane explodes out of the melting plastic. Works better on the adjustable valve ones, as the metal is weak and you can remove it with a fingernail if you just bend it out. THAT would be a fast, easy, delayed diversion. Great video.
Harsh Sahgal something about a drone i dont remember, it probably cut his hand or something, go to his instagram he has an explanation for it there, im too lazy to check sorry
It was a tragic accident that involved a drone, a car, and then at the last minute Harambe showed up. All true and the story is just as hilarious as it sounds.
Jacob Belanio Productions make it then pull apart an incandescent light bulb glass from the base and filament, fill the glass with the napalm, then glue the glass back to the base again. screw it into a desk lamp with an extension cord, then plug it in and stare in awe at the destruction!
You guys are awesome, but I think you could be even more awesome if you tried a trick from the Mythbusters book, and after showing the cool thing you can do at home, go bigger and do the thing only an internet celebrity can justify... get 50 flints and see how intense you can get the flash; something like the last one you could have gone out and done a 5-50 gal drum explosion instead of a coffee can, using a compressor/scuba tank instead of blowing into it... You *are* in Texas after all, right?

The Modern Rogue , I have a awesome thing for you to do, you light a candle, let the melt wax a little bit, take a match and dip it in the wax, then light it just behind the match head, let the flame touch the wax then flick it like a wand and little strings will shoot out
hey brushwood and friends, to remove to flint without hurting yourself , place the valve end down , "aka the shiny part lmao" against a table and use a flathead screwdriver, release both tabs, one on each side, and lift slowly this will absorb the impact from the spring and gently release the flint to the surface your working on, I've been collecting lighters for the sole purpose of saving the flints for years, not one year but many since i was a child , i have on hand a giant 500ml coke bottle full of them. pm I'm for details , Brian Brushwood ... When I was a kid I would take old ferrocerium rods or “survival fire starters” that create the same kinds of sparks after they broke, grasp the ferrocerium with two sticks, and smash the ferrocerium with a sledge hammer and almost catch everything around me on fire when I did so, or I’d throw it and watch it explode. So that's how you supercharge lighters with the safety lever! Back when I was young the lighters just had a wheel to adjust - pop off the silver backing and the wheel would keep turning. We would also grind the flints into powder and throw it into flames.
Brian and Jason giving bad ideas to me, jk.. I love this guys! Keep up the amazing videos. Could you try something like "chemistry experiments from hell" like mixing chemicals that create big booms or melt things, stuff like that

I was hoping I'd find someone down in the comments who would mention the ferrocerium. Kinda bugged me that they got that wrong.
Wow that's really interesting, I never knew that.
Now I want to buy a 10 pack of 80x8mm firelighters and heat them up with a blowtorch and see how big the sparks are.
