  • Today, I took the Tiger Sport to have the quick shifter installed. Since I've never used one of these before, I thought my first impressions might be either helpful or amusing to you depending on your experience with them. Although I don't perform the install myself and wasn't able to get footage of the process, I talk a little about why I decided to get this and test it out a little bit on my way home from the dealership.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. Very informative. Good point about the benefit of the quick shifter with the short gearing of the TS660.

      It really is a low risk upgrade since you can always shift normally if you don't need to quick shift. I had some trouble with the initial shifter but Triumph replaced it under warranty. Hopefully it was just a rare faulty part.

    Great addition when you can bang it down through the gears with the slipper clutch and a touch of back brake to back it into a corner🤘

    Thank you for this very useful video. I’m strongly considering this Tiger. As I’ve only ever ridden old bikes or revival bikes there is a lot to consider and learn about.
    Also was considering that Honda with DCT but I can’t find a demo ride in the area. I won’t buy a bike I can’t test ride.

    Yes, this is my first quick shifter, also. I'm pretty awkward, but it's just taking some getting used to. It's not very useful in heavy traffic, the bike is quick, with the close ratio gear box. It's great if you have the space!

    My dealer told me after installing QS, so I rode as usual with the clutch of the first to sixth gear in a quiet mode for proper calibration.

    Can't wait to get my little tiger... I ordered a QS as an option along the bike, to be installed right away, even if you're not supposed to use it before the end of the break-in...

    Lot of good a shift assist does, when the wind buffeting is so violent at 70mph+ you can't even enjoy it.

    The quickshifter works at its best at higher revs and I never use it for going into 1st or 2nd and so far not used it to down shift.

    I dont want to argue, but the first thing which struck me was like, quickshifter for "going through the gears in a city quickly"??? I mean, quickshifter is help, but it is meant to be for track use and to shift in high rpm. Not like in the city in the first 30% of the rpm. :) just saying...
    and by the way..for shifting without clutch, you dont need to have a quickshifter

    I have a QS on my 2020 Speed Triple. It’s great fun, when accelerating. I’ve also had a 2nd gen DCT Honda AT and I found it clunky at slow speeds. I much prefer to feather the clutch.
    Also, as your bike revs higher, it’ll be even better 😉 As they tend to work better in the higher rev range.

    My 2020 Tiger 1200 came with quick shift. When I test rode it, I hadn't ever used one before and the salesman didn't give me any instruction (and I didn't ask). So I tried to use it but by coming off the gas before quick shifting. FAIL. After receiving instruction, all is good and I'll never go back. Especially useful in semi-urgent decelerations - especially since the IMU and TCS and ABS are all integrated. Front brake, rear brake, and slam down into 4th then third then second - no wheel hop or skid. It's "clunky" in 1st and 2nd, especially at low RPMs, so if I'm going slow I just clutch it. The way I ride, I enjoy acceleration. I don't always speed, and I don't track, but I do sometimes enjoy getting to the speed limit (roughly) very, very quickly. 0-70 in a few seconds quick shifting at 6K revs, then letting the engine brake to get back down to legal. I say now I don't like the idea of DCTs, but a quick shifter is halfway there. I found it to be the perfect combo of the two, allowing me to seamlessly go back and forth.

      Thanks for the comment! Getting up to speed quickly has been the biggest benefit for me personally. The bike has been even more fun to ride lately.

    l have a QS fitted to my 2014 Street Triple 675...it only works changing up and to be fair only really works when accelerating fast. At low rev's it's useless, which means in traffic it just 'clunks' so l don't us it. l agree you do need to be positive when gear shifting...Also I've found wearing different boots/shoes made a difference....When accelerating quickly, using higher revs makes all the difference...Of course my bike is not a 'ride by wire' so has no auto blip...

    Thank you for your video. I have a two questions. During highway riding do you feel any vibration above 70 miles per hour? Second, do you miss riding without DCT? I am not sure if I buy Honda NC 750 or tiger 660 or 900 Any suggestion?

      There are some vibes above 70 for sure but it's manageable. I do miss the DCT at times because it works great. I would recommend test rides on any bikes that you're considering if at all possible. It's the only way to be sure if the bike is going to work for you.

    Hi, been viewing many of your vids. Your previous bike was a DCT 750 Honda ???? Im about to pull the trigger on either one of these bikes. Im an oolder, rider (62), big guy ( 6"1 260) , In your honest opinion, which one would you choose. Im totally torn between both. Price is not an issue, since they are very comparable in that regard. Would definitely put the quick shifter on the 660 if thats the one i choose. I value your opinion. Greeting from NY.

      They are both great bikes, but I personally think that the Honda NC750X is the better overall package. I had some issues with excessive heat and also had multiple quick shifter problems on the Triumph 660. I had more fun on the Triumph, but it loses points due to the negatives I experienced. Hope that helps.

    I had the QS installed on my Trident 660 and it much prefers the high revs when shifting.

      it suc..., i prefer using the clutch when i shift into second gear, but for all other gears the QS is a big thing

      Honestly, the QS likes high revs. I don't shift until 5000RPM

    I’ve got the Sam bike and the same age as yours! I’m thinking of the shift assist as I unfortunately have progressive arthritis in my left thumb and any reduced use of the clutch should help. So, do you need to still use the clutch?

      You need to pull the clutch in any time you're coming to a stop, just the same as if you didn't have the quick shifter.

      I still use the clutch lever when I'm riding slower (under 2K rpm or so) but it really helps the rest of the time.

    does this also auto blip on down? or this is only for up shift direction?

      Yes, it does both up and down shifts and it does auto-blip on the down shifts.

    Hi KSSTUDIOS, I goto triumph shop install the quick shifer for my tiger660 yesterday, but it didn't seem to work, the dashborad shows transmission fault. When I ride, I hold the throttle, I can't up or down the gear. I was the first car in our area, and no other quickshifer to test. Neither the dealer nor I know what to do :(

      It sounds like the initial calibration process might not have worked correctly or the device might be faulty. The shop might need to open a case with Triumph parts support to investigate the issue. I am also experiencing some intermittent failures with mine and will release a follow-up video when I have more information on the fix.

      The transmission fault consistently shows up if you turn the bike off using the switch. If you turn off the bike with the key, it will not show a transmission fault.

    Hy there, I'm also transitioning from Harleys to the Triumph tiger 660, however, I'm 5'8'' medium built guy, and I'm worried about dropping the bike , because of my height. Any tips for me?

      The Tiger 660 is a very lightweight bike compared to all of the Harley's I've owned in the past. The seat height is higher, but the weight of this bike is pretty well balanced and feels so much easier for me to move around. I would recommend having a seat on one if you have a Triumph dealer nearby. You might be able to get a good idea if it'll work for you. Hope that helps.

      The seat is really narrow towards the tank which helps. I am the same height and have no problem, not completely flat footed but enough to be happy.

    I'll be honest, as an old school rider, what IS the point of a quick, shifter for anything other than a track sportsbike? Is it really so much effort and energy to use the clutch?

      For me personally, it's not really about the energy expended to shift the bike. I just find that with the short gearing it's much easier to be able to shift without using the clutch lever for the in-town riding where there's a lot of stop-and-go. I can give my clutch hand a little rest and the rev matching on the downshifts is much smoother than I've ever been able to accomplish manually. I'm sure it's not for everybody though.

      Quickshifter makes city riding in heavy traffic not only so much more relaxing, but actually safer too.
      imagine you are slowly coming into a stop, you downswift using a QS and the bike is then always in gear with the engine in the right power band because the QS will quickly blip the throttle at the same time and ready to go so you can accelerate out of trouble in an instant, if you are still trying to find the friction point when trouble hits you've actually lost valuable time to get yourself out of danger or you may not even be in gear to be able to get out leaving you no choice but to dump your bike.

      @@nanaholic01 Quick shifters seem to function better at higher revs. Just tooling around town at low revs is not its "sweet spot". Thus I was always assessing the rpms whether the quick shift would be in its element. That's a distraction. The pressure to enact the shift was much higher than with a "normal" shift. For me it's conventional shifting or better yet DCT. I've tried to be open minded but for me quick shifters are unnecessary and don't really improve anything (except the race track).

      @@sunrisejak2709 Maybe you have an old one but I have a quick shifter on my 2020 MC51 CBR250RR and again it will automatically blip the throttle for you as you downshift so you don't have to rev manage. if you are on low rev (>3000rpm) as you coming into a slow stop and then downshift it automatically blips the throttle and kicks the rev back to over 6k just as it is engaging the gear which is where the power band begins on this particular bike. It is very convenient but on the other hand it also sounds like you are deliberately revving the engine as you do a slow approach so sometimes cars next to you think you are trying to egg them into a race at the lights which is the only bad side. This might be limited to bikes like the CBR250RR which has electronic throttles so the combined electronics is able to do these smart engine management moves.
      While I'm fairly new to bikes I've been driving only stick on 4 wheels for nearly 30 years so the same principle applies when it comes to friction points and clutch management and the QS is absolutely better and quicker than anything you can do on full manual - just like sequential shifting is going to be quicker than your foot in a car, and again much safer because in any manual vehicles you never want to be caught out of gear with bikes having the extra factor where you lose speed you lose the balance as the bike will start to want to tip over and fall due to gravity. Also with a QS if you want to go back to clutch you don't have to flip any switches or turn off the engine or anything like that - if you want to use the clutch just grab it and it is back to full manual, unlike DCT which removes the clutch control completely from you. I would never get another bike which don't come with QS as an option and I wish cars have something like a QS because the clutch is what makes driving harder but fun at the same time but there are moments where you want to be lazy and you don't want to have that option removed like in sequential gearboxes and DCT.

      @@nanaholic01 HI, thanks. I kinda get it. 🙂But in normal everyday riding what is the benefit of "quick"? Why is it better to save a few tiny fractions of a second when lightly pulling the clutch just enough to allow the shift (not to the handle grip) and the pressure needed on the top of my toe is very light and it slides into the next gear like "butter". But if I rely on the clutchless shift the pressure needed on the top of my toe is noticeably hard and the "clunk" in shifting seems like it's not really wanting to go into the gear. The traditional way is much much smoother. Downshift with quick shifter requires so much pressure my foot nearly comes off the footrest. Up and down the bike feels like it kind of resists the actual mechanical shift. My bike is a BMW F900XR. (nice bike in most every other way). I've asked the dealer to have a look and they said I just need to get used to it. 🙄 Maybe because I had DCT that I got spoiled with true clutchless shifting smooth as silk. But while I appreciate that a quick shifter allows my left hand to not be active in the shift but again what is gained by "quick"? I still don't see the benefit unless you want to shave a few tenths on lap times. DCT is of course different as the next gear is already engaged so no need for the mechanical movement of the gear itself. With quick shifters the gear still needs to mechanically move thus not much is gained. I hope it's just the rather poor performance of my particular quick shifter as the benefit still escapes me. Maybe I should ask my dealer to inspect and see if some adjustment needs to be made. Otherwise I'll just shift as "normal" because it's just smoother and less notchy. Actually in the F900 forum others have complained too on the quality of the shirt. Perhaps it's better on other brands or models. I'm trying to keep an open mind! But this is my 18th motorcycle so not a nubie. 😁

    So you still have to use your foot, just not the clutch, correct?

      Yes, the shifter must still be pushed with your foot but the hand lever would not need to be used for a quick shift. You can always shift normally if you like, no need to quick shift unless you want to.

    I went x2 honda and X2 triumph. Now going back to honda. Had too many issues with newer triumphs

    I think that DCT transmission is better than quickshifter. You can still shift whenever you want

    That was painful to watch you getting used to it 😬. You must have it sussed by now. You got it, throttle closed on downshift and be accelerating on the up shift. Don’t downshift too early for smoother downshifts.

    Perhaps quick shifters are beneficial on the race track but I don't see the necessity on the street. The quick shifter on my BMW is useless. I actually see it more of a gimmick. I tend to shift it normally as it's just smoother. I also had a DCT (XADV). Now that's a game changer smooth imperceptible shifts that make for a very pleasurable riding experience. Quick shifters? I think a waste of money.
