  • It all came down to this: Mike Sigrist (Blue-Red Ensoul Artifact) versus Joel Larsson (Red Aggro) for the title. Sigrist already claimed Player of the Year, but Larsson was angling for a spot in the World Championship as well. Who will come away with the trophy? Watch to find out.

    I remember watching this live screaming at the t.v "Keep the 6!!! Keep the 6!!!" My heart sank when he mulled to 3. This deck had been special to me because I had played a version of it for while. I was so hyped to see it in the finals.
    ...he shoulda kept the 6.

    I hate this sort of elitist attitude people have with Magic, where the only decks that aren't 'garbage' are basically control. So what if mono red is simpler in some ways to control? It doesn't make it 'stupid' or 'garbage'. It's a strategy game, sure, but people forget that part of strategy is using the most effective one. And like it or not, mono red is effective. It's fast and furious and if the other player unprepared to deal with it, it wins games. Stop looking your nose down at people who don't play super complicated decks. You aren't better than mono red players, you aren't smarter, you just play different decks and have different play styles. Get over it.

    • @janolekvisli5383

      It is going to be the same way no matter what deck you play even playing control gets you the same reactions.

      I know that, and I would be lying if I said I've never gotten frustrated at control or burn decks but it just seems that red gets the worst of it. But I get what you're saying though

    When I first started playing Magic 2 years ago I had no idea what I was doing, what to play, anything really. I just knew I loved the game and would watch videos all the time.
    When I came across Joel Larsson in the finals of Pro Tour Gatecrash against Tom Martell and saw the deck he was playing, UWR quickly became my favorite color combination, and Joel Larsson my favorite player. This guy really ignited my love for the game.
    When I watched him raise that trophy I was proud, as if I was one of those team members in the background!
    Congratulations, Joel. You've certainly earned it!

      Lets face it these people know nothing about creating media. The fact that they have not figured out how to display cards properly when filming drafts is just annoying. Why do they not just display the cards after? They do for some of the other drafters. Watching their live filming while drafting is just bad.

    • @papernes
      @papernes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Watching the Pro Tour is more suited to experienced players. If you need someone to hold your hand and explain each thing to you, don't watch. They can't explain every little thing that happens, sometimes just because how fast things can go, or the time it takes to bring up cards on the display, because they do this live. Players who have been playing a lot, and know the cards in the format and the decks being played, don't need to have everything explained and can figure out what's going on by watching. Plus, there's a transcript of the entire match somewhere you can look up.

    • @jonathanwhynot4598
      @jonathanwhynot4598 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What a dick response. Imagine any other event where commentators took your view. No one who didn't play football wouldn't be able to watch, etc. Yes, these videos are more targeted to advanced players but that doesn't mean they can't make it more accessible to appeal to new players. MTG elitists are so unbearable.

    • @rylon30
      @rylon30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with the other guy. When I first started watching Pro Tours it was tough for me to follow what was going on and I though the players were going too fast. Then after a few weeks of playing and getting comfortable with the game I started finding myself more capable of keeping up. It's true, if you're a pro then it's just easier for you to play your turn quickly since you've already got your turns figured out.

    • @aarodful
      @aarodful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Football is far easier to wach because the game doesnt change like magic. The rules are much simplier and there are not hundreds of pieces. Magic is always changing and it would just take forever to stop and explain every rule, card or action. Plus you would have to tell the pros who are used to playing the game at a certain speed and force them to play really slow. They would all be super annoyed.
      Even football commentators though though dont explain what a first down or a touchdown is, or why the team is kicking a field goal. People just know the rules, and if you want to watch magic, it is impossible without knowing the cards, and commentators cant explain and go through hundereds of cards to let people who dont play watch.

    Everyone complaining about red being brainless. Tell me, how was the standard meta before this, where most commonly the best decks involved slamming down siege rhinos, was so much more skill intensive? Go on, I'll wait.

    • @jacebelerin9219
      @jacebelerin9219 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which meta with siege rhino you are talking about? So many different style of decks than runs siege fuckface. If you are talking about abzan aggro decks, it still requires more skill to play them than red decks. and abzan control also requires more skill to play than a red deck. Running 3 colored decks is not so simple in a tight situation. Playing the right lands every turn is also a factor. While in the case of a red deck, you only care about land numbers and slamming 1 to 2 drops every turn and force your opponent to have an answer. I hate red decks but I understand the use for it cause it's very effective at doing its job. That's why I have a crapload of sideboard to stop red decks when I was still playing magic. The hate for red decks should be understandable among experienced magic players. Cause along the line you have been dropped many times by a red deck cause you didn't draw the right lands or just didn't stablelize fast enough.

    • @HyperShadow89
      @HyperShadow89 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's part of the problem though, isn't it? It was such a stupidly good creature that you could play multiple ways to get to the same ending. Abzan aggro, play several stupidly efficient creatures with no drawbacks and run over your opponent. Abzan control, play more removal and thoughtseize away your opponents most dangerous cards, and then play stupidly efficient creatures and run your opponent over. Playing the right lands? Between caryatid providing mana and being difficult to remove, courser gaining life whenever you played a land and letting you pay lands from the top of your deck, and the auto lightning helix from rhino, that was barely an issue. So I fail to see how it's a 'smarter' deck. What's not smart about playing a deck that has redundancy and that punishes opponents when they stumble on lands or try to durdle for several turns? Without fast aggressive decks, games would take forever. And who wants that?

    • @jacebelerin9219
      @jacebelerin9219 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which is still more things to do than a straightforward red deck. That's the point here. Just because people call red deck is stupid or hate it doesn't mean it should stop.

    • @HyperShadow89
      @HyperShadow89 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you have more to do, but it's just stalling until you drop your big creatures and start swinging. I'd rather be aggressive from the start and force my opponent to answer me or lose.

    • @ComradeQuestion42069
      @ComradeQuestion42069 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @mentosmuncher
      @mentosmuncher 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      so in competitive play,in few cases it's legal that, if you miss your trigger then it's not your opponents job to remind you because sure it benefits your opponent but the missed trigger is about damaging the life total and not the board state. If something is supposed to affect the board state then that is a more of a gray area. and there are reasons that a judge needs to be called or you do have to remind your opponent. Like for instance if there is an enchantment or emblem that says you lose 2 life for every card drawn you can't just refuse to draw cards on your draw step.

      plaz7374 I think it's kind of unfair to say that it's just those kinds of decks. In my experience the meta-game, in general, regardless of what kind of card game you play, never requires a lot of skill.
      Hell, a couple of months ago everyone was playing Abzan. Now that may not have been as fast paced as the kinds of decks we saw this time around, but it was still fairly easy to play, in my opinion.

    • @KilljoysDrummer17

      ***** I can see where you're coming from. I myself never really like the meta, and I usually try to avoid it any way I can, no matter what type of deck is at the top, at the moment.
      But I'm a player who really likes fast-paced decks (I'm way too impatient to play control XD) so this was the first time where I actually enjoyed going with the crowd.
      But when Battle for Zendikar releases, who knows what kind of meta will hit us next.

    in game 3 why does Mike not block the swiftspear with ornathopter the first time, since all the spells he could play are just burn that would kill the thopter anyway and do more damage by just killing it before attacking. Except for lightning strike i guess joel would do 1 more point of damage by dealing it to mikes face after a block instead of killing and then attacking. But thats the only card and in that worst case scenario you take 1 more damage, while if he doesnt have it, u take 1 damage for no reason by not blocking. seems the obvious statistical play is to block that first time.

      CommanderAuk Yes and no I played as a kid and got back into it a couple years and I understand while playing an intense game you have a lot of energy and anxiety and the shuffling and little ticks people do is to help relieve that energy. I also know people think (and for some people it actually does a bit) it helps you more easily remember/notice every card in your hand. For me it may or may not help me remember/notice every card in my hand slightly however it also distracts me from the game and I have seen a negative impact from it.
      I wish the unhinged card stop that was a normal card.

  • @aegisofhonor

    Mike is going to regret not keeping that 6 hand for a long long time, it's rare if ever anyone gets a chance at one game away from winning a Pro Tour, he had a serious shot at it if he kept the 6 hand, but he mulled, bad 5, bad 4...3....loss....

    • @ExtraVictory
      @ExtraVictory ปีที่แล้ว

      The instinct to be results oriented is strong but that's how you become a worse player. Obviously in hindsight Mike would keep the 6 knowing what his 5, 4, and 3 were going to be. But if you let him do the match over he would probably still mulligan that 6. Because you still have to evaluate if your 6 card hand which does nothing is better than the average 5 card hand, which could easily have ornithopter ensoul and just win. Either way Joel was the best player in this match, he already had a previous top 8 and finals appearance. But Sigrist is a great player and wouldn't have kept the 6 on pure superstition if you gave him the chance to redo it. That doesn't mean he doesn't regret that his choices led him to lose the pro tour

      Sword of the Morning you don't mulligan from 6 directly to 3, you have to figure out if it's better or worse than an average 5 card hand. The fact that your 5 and 4 hands end up sucking as well is unfortunate, but has nothing to do with the decision of mulliganing the 6.

    Mono red can be beaten. Lots of black decks are REALLY strong with stuff like BB to board clear. If everyone runs mono red aggro at your local FNM, then bring a deck to counter it, and stop complaining. I'm a Jeskai Tempo player, and I haven't changed since KoT. I don't even care about the meta, i love Mantis Rider too much to give it up haha

      I'm the same in our local tournaments when j was still playing. I played USA control cause no one else was running it. With all the burn I got I thought I got an edge over mono red but still no. I still got bad hands and wrong land colors sometimes. So I side board 4 circle the flame and 3 nyx sheep for mono reds around that time. ....turn 2 circle of asshole was always my favorite part. The look in their face when that happens is always priceless. you can burn me for days bro, I can deal with that easily lol

    Why do people hate mono red? I'm sorry you chose to play three colors and you have to "choose which lands to play carefully." I mean any type of Andaman deck has the turn 4 think for the win unless you play a counter. I mean abzan control is the closest thing to control in the current meta. A aggro deck was going to win.

    I am surprised by Sigrists maindeck choice. I would've used Renowned Weaponsmiths and Scuttled Doom Engines. He could still keep his ornithopters, hangarback walkers, counters, shrapnel blasts. The Weaponsmiths would've forced Larrson to use a fire spell on. Plus Larrson's creatures have power 2 or less on Sigrists turn which gave him open 6 damage then Shrapnel Blast for 11 more. 17 damage in one turn. Still boggled. I have 2 decks to bring Friday to destroy these hopeful Fire Mages that spent their allowance on these red cards.

    • @wallywonks99
      @wallywonks99 9 ปีที่แล้ว
