    I know that a lot of people aren't happy that there were so many Eldrazi decks in the top 8, but I'm pretty glad to see that Modern can get shaken up, and that recent sets have the power to do so.
    Also, there were three different kinds of Eldrazi decks, so it wasn't like there wasn't any type of diversity.

      +Joshua Nedler consider this, Eye is legendary, true, so you only get a discount of 2 mana... but you get a 2 mana discount on EVERYTHING, and eye doesn't have to tap. Temple taps for 2. It can be tapped by opponents' effects, and it doesn't fetch things. Turn 1 with eye: get 2 2/2 endless ones out for free. Turn 2: Play a 4 drop eldrazi and a 2 drop eldrazi. Turn 1 with temple: play a 1-2 drop. Turn 2 with temple(s): play a 4 drop eldrazi. While the deck is still very good with temples, banning eye will allow other decks to actually have a chance at combating it. If you ban temple as well, eldrazi dies. Which is OK, but a last resort. If you only ban temple, eldrazi remains a broken deck and runs tron lands instead. Also, most tron decks only run 1 eye, and it's really not essential to the deck's play. It adds consistency of finishing the game... but so do ancient stirrings and karn.

    The thing about Eldrazi is that you can't beat it nearly as easily post-board as you can other decks (like Twin and Affinity, which have SOOO many options for hate). I would love to hear your thoughts on this. *There are four general ways I am aware of that decks use to beat other decks, and it seems like Eldrazi beats them all:*
    *1. Remove/counter their Eldrazi*
    Won't work because threat decks are better than answer decks. They will always have more Eldrazis than you have removal. Plus they get some value from simply casting them. They can cast twice as many Eldrazi's per turn as you can cast counterspells/removal, because of their ramp lands. Also, Cavern of Souls is a thing.
    *2. Establish bigger board presence/threat*
    Again wont work for obvious reasons. They come out too fast and they are just too big. By the time you cast a ~2/3 Goyf, they've got a 4/4 guy and made you exile your best card from your hand.
    *3. Silver bullet sideboard*
    Cards like Blood Moon and Ensnaring Bridge. Every Eldrazi deck has 4 Thought-Knot Seer to deal with exactly this. Most versions run Chalice of the Void so you can't cast cantrips to find your silver bullets. Bx versions will playset IoK and run 0-4 Thoughtseize. You could sideboard in Leyline of Sanctity, but relying on it to show up in your opening 7 is bad. If you aggressively mulligan to find a Leyline, you have already done their job for them. Plus depending on the colors, they might have artifact/enchantment hate in the sideboard.
    *4. Outrace them with a combo*
    See #3. The sheer speed of their creatures, plus their hand control and early Chalice, makes Eldrazi a huge combo-killer.
    From what I know about matches and sideboards, there seems to simply be no reliable way to beat Eldrazi, except for playing Eldrazi yourself. It is in times like these when a ban is in order. I'm not saying lay down the banhammer because the format's not diverse (although that could be an issue). I'm advocating the banhammer because I've sat down and looked at how Eldrazi is able to combat pretty much every strategy in the meta at once.

  • @MrDevecka
    @MrDevecka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree with you guys. even if I, as Slovakian, am very glad to see Ivan in the finals, Eldrazi is really much ovepowered. But on remark to all the critics: do you remember, how Abzan dominated in Standard? But by standard our luck is the set rotating out. So i dont think Abzan will dominate the next year. Wizzards have really but duty to create some ballance to Eldrazi decks that this format would not get boring and would not lose its diversity.

    Most of the comments are really poor researched. Guys, look who played the Eldrazi decks..... Team FacetoFace and channel fireball they placed 10 in the top 25. So the best Magic Players out there just played a new archetype + Ivan Floch and other close to Hall of Fame. The Pantheon try to beat them by killing them before they can astablish all their pieces. Everybody else just sat there and hat no answers to the eldrazi decks. But there are answers, really simple answers. Just watch the next GP´s They won´t bring the deck, or half of them play something against eldrazi.
    Its a Metashakeup. But if you see the numbers, 8% of the field played eldrazi and and like 20 members of the top teams + some other really good players.... That not a real shakeup. Thats just a phase... and maybe the eldrazi deck gets established but the rest of the field has some more answers.

    A small request for future tournament videos: please avoid putting spoilers of previous games into the video title. If the video has player names in it, then just by glancing at the title (be it when searching for the VoDs or by accidentally scrolling too far down on a playlist) the result of previous matches is spoiled.
    I'd prefer if the titles were only "Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch Finals (Modern)" - the description can still contain the player names, same during the video of course, but this way just seeing the title doesn't tell who won the previous rounds. The same would be preferred for the semifinals and the quarterfinals (numbers marking whether it's the first turn or the second turn of it - since there are 2 semis and 4 quarters).

      My point being that having one pro tour have the top eight it had right now, means little to wizards as far as banning is concerned. I gave twin as an example of an extremely predominant archetype that could just instantly win and it took years for wizards to ban. So, I consider reactions to this pro tour overreactions. Considering I have heard the same reactions over less powerful decks.

  • @GarretWallace827

    to everyone who is crying for an eye of ugin ban, let the format settle first. we just lost the most annoying, powerful deck in modern (twin) and out of nowhere a bunch of new cards created a deck that decimated everybody. Let the format settle a bit, see what decks come about that are now actually competitive. if nothing reasonable comes about, and eldrazi just becomes the only playable deck in modern, i understand banning out powerhouse cards from the deck. however, i do also encourage leaving enough of the deck to still be playable and competitive. ban reality smasher or eldrazi mimic. it would leave enough of the deck to still be powerful but take away enough to make it vulnerable. dont go crying for a ban before people have had time to adjust.

    • @GarretWallace827
      @GarretWallace827 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it wouldn't be the same deck if those cards were banned. it would revert back to what is essentially eldrazitron. the list i started running is BW, utilizing path to exile for processors and good removal, lingering souls for early game blocking and sometimes late game flying-swings, inquisition, thoughtsieze, relic, map, strangler, thought-knot, blight herder, o-sower, etc. still a great deck, but doesn't break the format quite as hard. like i said, i still dont want to see this deck banned out, i'd much rather like to see other decks rise above and beyond to compete. nonetheless, wizards will do what wizards will do and i guess i'll just have to adapt to whatever happens.

    what no sideboard cards against this deck?! oh no what are we gonna do! step 1: play crumble to dust. step 2: name eye of ugin. step 3: laugh. and don't tell me that you can't live long enough to play that card this deck does not win every game on turn 2. infect is capable of turn 2 kills and has been for years no one is crying ban glistener elf. this deck is very similar to infect in that it struggles with consistency it beats itself sometimes. we saw this on both sides. I didn't know that magic players had turned into crybaby little girls while I was away from the game. personally I thought it was sweet to see that new cards can still make an impact in eternal formats. we haven't seen this from a new set for quite a while but I promise you all tron, delver, abzan, jund, and affinity are not just dead now I promise

    • @gamer7916
      @gamer7916 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Josh Marsh when you cast crumble to dust, they already have a thought knot seer and a reality smasher on board.

    • @IrateSasquatch
      @IrateSasquatch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gamer7916 so your argument is that they always have a god hand and that you have absolutely no way to kill a 4/4 and or a 5/5 in your deck? sounds like you shouldn't be playing modern in the first place. ghost quarter, dismember, roast, flame slash, go for the throat, etc. will all help buy the time you need. especially when they mulligan as much as they do

    • @gamer7916
      @gamer7916 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Marsh I wouldn't consider a eldrazi temple/eye of ugin plus 1-2 other lands and a few threats a god hand considering their decklist. I think you're underestimating how fast this deck is. Thought knot seer rips any answers you have out of your hand. Reality smasher has haste and requires you to discard to even target it. And even if you do respond to it, their whole deck is made of threats like those cards. This deck beats blue moon, a deck filled with disruption and blood moon. Also, this deck can still win without eye of ugin, especially if you're spending your 4th turn tapping out

    • @IrateSasquatch
      @IrateSasquatch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gamer7916 i'm not underestimating anything. i'm fully aware of what the deck is and how it functions thank you. I simply choose to come up with ideas instead of screaming "BAN" at the top of my lungs like some butt hurt little twin player. if you want to play magic play magic and stop wimpering when a good deck puts up good numbers. this deck is similar in a lot of ways to affinity and while no one card is perfectly gonna shut them down a collective STRATEGY can. I was just being sarcastic about the god hand thing but I don't like comments like "oh that won't work cuz by the time you do that they have already done this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" magic doesn't work that way. by that logic every game would be over by turn two and none of us would ever get to play a real game. by that logic we better ask wizards to ban urza lands while we are at it because wtf turn 3 karn!!!#@#!@@#

    • @gamer7916
      @gamer7916 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh Marsh WoTC has banned decks for putting up good numbers in a single tournament. Hulk Flash was such a deck, after it was reverted to its original errata, it was banned just after a single GP after 3 of the top 8 decks were hulk flash. Twin has little to do with the power level of eldrazi. In fact, from testing, eldrazi had a favorable matchup against twin. The "won't work cuz by the time you do that they have already done this" is a valid argument and does apply to magic. Wonder why control decks had such a bad matchup against red deck wins? because red deck wins win early game, long before the control deck can stabilize, which happens mid to late game.

      So, lets try 8 rack. Control, cast that, nope. cavern of souls gets trumped by ghost quarters and cast an Eldrazi, how about no. Control seems to be a good match up. specially if you counter something and they cannot cast anything else.
      Twin was one of the few with an obvious chance though. The threat of an instant win and the Eldrazi had little in the way of dealing with it.
      Blue white control might make it though. Land destruction works. But what the format needs is a healthy dose of consistent combo decks. Since the eldrazi have little in the way of interaction with non interactive decks.

      +Justin Harris That's your opinion, and I have mine (no hard feelings). Though I'd say that if he had the chance to tap correctly and he just messed up it's a minor mistake. I would call it a "robbery" if JC couldn't tap correctly and just used generic mana as colorless. However, having seen the situation it appears to me as nothing but an innocent misplay.
      No need to argue for this though, the judges an players already decided what happened and what the resolution of the situation had to be.

    Absolutely disgraceful as an event. This kind of complete failure is exactly wizards needs to do modern testing. Banning Eye and Temple won't even address the garbage meta game that's underneath, this has gone from a format led by 3 interactive decks (Twin, Jund, Pod), to a format that only has non-interactive aggro or combo strategies viable. Ban Mishra's Workshop and Ancient Tomb, because that's what Eye and Temple are, at the very least, unban some cards that lead to real games of magic, and maybe the format can survive this absolute shitshow.
