This is one of my favorite finals in magic history because a deck that's just okay that won, only for it being it was so well positioned in the Pro Tour meta.
I agree, I watched all the m15 videos days after learning to try to learn all the tricks and this final is the best display of control vs. aggro. this will always be my favorite magic related video
@@tcgmetaslayer4202 The control deck. It was far from the best deck in the meta, but it was perfectly positioned for this pro tour. People brought it to FNM afterwards, but it failed there miserably because people got their decks ready for it

Everyone hates control because you need to know what you're doing and understand synergy between cards in addition to the fact that control decks have an unsettling tendency to dominate tournaments. Everyone hates aggro because the first thing that springs to mind upon hearing aggro is a mono-red player who doesn't want to think too hard about how to put pieces of cardboard on a table and who mangle their precious and expensive unsleeved cards upon desks with their Dorito-stained hands. Everyone hates midrange because of the huge, and therefore expensive, mana pools and the fact that they constantly involve putting in one fatty that sticks to the board like glue and stops your opponent from doing anything that they find fun, making it a one-player game. Freedom Panic well this isnt the current standard. if u wanna get back into it a good way to learn the metas and how the newer stuff works is just go hang out at ur local card shop and maybe draft alittle of the new sets
laicuan1 I actually still prefer just playing casually with my friends with my current decks. I got some new cards that I like sifting through. I was just hoping to watch some profesional games to see how they play and what kind of strategies they come up with, so I was hoping there would be some more explanation on what was going on in the game itself, but no luck. My last block was 2013 and 2014. I recently got 2015 and the dragon set (which I was disappointed in). I guess it's not so much that I want to get involved in the new meta, I just want to be able to have a stream where things are more clear so that I can follow what's going on. I guess that's probably asking too much as this is more of a niche audience. Maybe I can find some smaller pro tournaments on stream that go in further detail in explanation. My favorite decks I built in the last several blocks include low cost unblockable hexproof buffed fast agro. An eldrazi deck that utilizes lots of mana acceleration, a fast agro infect deck, and a basic exalted deck. I also have a ton of other decks that are fun to play. Every now and then I like building new decks out of newer cards.
Freedom Panic The best sets that have come out in the past year or so has been Khans of Tarkir, Journey Into Nyx, Dragons of Tarkir, and Theros. Besides M15 anyway. It seems the best decks to use in Standard right now are Blue/White Control, Red/Blue Burn, and Black/Blue Control (Mill). I don't know much about straight Aggro decks, but if you need any help, I'd be happy to oblige. Good luck to you and have a nice day.
Ghostly Gaming Those archetypes are FALSE. A Mill deck? Really? Maybe your local meta, but by no means is there a competitive t1-t3 mill strategy (in standard.)
Freedom Panic agreed. Their format of showing the game is just for people that know all the cards, They should be showing the effects of the cards, how am I supposed to know whats going on, If I don´t know what the cards are!?
It's a bitch to watch but its fun to play. I know the game in and out I don't understand half this stuff. The card names aren't as iconic as yugiohs or Pokemon but it is far more addictive & expensive
As an adamant competitive magic player, this was an inspirational video when I first came across it. It makes me laugh how many people here are complaining about how unexciting it is. You clicked on a video for a trading card game tournament and you were expecting what exactly? Lmao
What is this? Both players seem to enjoy the game, no super absurdly extra ultra fast summoning taking place, people around can follow and understands what's going on... Goodbye Yu-Gi-Oh, Hello Magic!
**Control Master Race**: Die Aggro! You don't belong in this meta! **Aggro peasant chief**: It was not by my choice, that I am once again given cards. The meta ill needs a savior such as you! **Aggro peasant chief**: What is a deck? A miserable little pile of cards! But enough talk... turn 1, take 2!
I love that Floch wasn't playing the standard U/W control we've been seeing for forever, with Elspeth and Aetherling. No, he goes for one with 4 quickens and an elixier of immortality. And that Sheep-Angel sideboard action. I love it.
+Steven Melton Art and Paintings If you haven't already, we highly recommend picking up Magic Duels on Steam, Xbox One or iPhone. It's the best way to learn how to play Magic... and it's free! :)
+Magic: The Gathering The MTG on the computer sucks. It is better to just go to a MTG store or a game store and ask for a promo pack. It is good enought to play.
Everybody is freaking out because Floch uses control... it doesn't matter, he made it to the FINALS thats more than any other pro on tour could say. Well done Ivan
I wasn't sure if this would be really lame and boring or not, but as someone who liked playing MtG as a kid I figured I'd check this out. This is actually kind of interesting to watch because each person's deck has a unique play style. Plus, a televised MtG tournament is something that's just... different... so it's interesting even just on that basis too.
Wow I though Jackson Cunningham really deserved the win. He was able to get around the blue/white control despite all his mulligans and mana screw! Then floch mulls with Jackson having a really good 7 into his only archangel and 2 sheep....... WTF
I know ivan's gettin alot of hate for the deck he played, but to be co,pletely honest i love tat deck choice. its for people who love to troll the oponent and make sure to not give them any chance of winning. I would make a couple changes in the deck list though.
It only runs two Planar Cleansing's correct? And honestly, I'd almost say D-Sphere is a better option than Planar Cleansing. Less cost prohibitive, and better overall utility (at least until Supreme Verdict rotates).
Adam Turner Stop being ridicilous. This is a childrens card game and your angry comment won't change that. Those people probably run around with a YUGIOH Duelldisk in their town and jerk off to hentai stuff.
+Torrox Morrox Boy if you think this card game is for children then lord help you lol. Props to any "children" that can learn this game and can build decks and actively keep track of what they do during a game. Not even Yugioh is for children. Tighten up. :)
Copies of Floch's deck were everywhere in FNMs at my local game store during it's height. It was so frustrating to play against, where they basically counter everything and then swing in with an AEtherling when you have nothing left to play. Some people switched up a few cards, like adding Timely Reinforcements or Frost Breath to the deck, but the idea was the same. The only fun part was watching mirror matches of this deck try to win against each other.
I am laughing because whenever I see a video of card gamers I imagine "cock magic" episode from South Park with the ultra over-the-top commentator judging the rooster card games.
33:40 Jackson plays the second copy of the planes walker to use the ability twice but i thought when you summon a second one that they would both die or is that an old rule.
Arthur Gonçalves it's not an old rule i just recently bought a deck including 2 planeswalkers and it said in the info thingy if you control two or more planeswalkers with the same type they both die
Current rules: 306. Planeswalkers 306.1. A player who has priority may cast a planeswalker card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Casting a planeswalker as a spell uses the stack. (See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”) 306.2. When a planeswalker spell resolves, its controller puts it onto the battlefield under his or her control. 306.3. Planeswalker subtypes are always a single word and are listed after a long dash: “Planeswalker - Jace.” Each word after the dash is a separate subtype. Planeswalker subtypes are also called planeswalker types. Planeswalkers may have multiple subtypes. See rule 205.3j for the complete list of planeswalker types. 306.4. If a player controls two or more planeswalkers that share a planeswalker type, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is called the “planeswalker uniqueness rule.” See rule 704.
Esper Control was good for a short period of time a couple years ago but for the most part this was Control's Swan Song. It hasn't been good for the better part of 7 years now. In that respect this is kind of a momentous occasion in Magic's long history.
So, what were those last 2 cards that they played that finished the game ? I am guessing they were instants but the video doesn't show what they were even though they were crucial to the game. Thank you
I would guess a combination of both. But it's not like they crack packs until they get a playset of Elspeths. We all have to buy some individual cards.
isarex88 No. Players buy their own cards. You see Ivan's shirt? Blackborder is a huge store that sells singles. They are most likely the ones sponsoring him. Starcity Games and ChannelFireball are other famous sponsors.
I somehow feel sorry for him. Must be pretty hard to sit there, knowing a lot of eyes are following you and every step you make, judge every misplay you do..
+Ichor1d Yeah true, though I imagine the reality is that people will appreciate that he's not a "pro" and more a up-and-coming player more. But the pressure is no joke.
Control is a valid way to play magic. you may not like it, but its the way it is. Is like playing shooter games and complain about campers... if they can do it, its because the rules allow it, and if the rules let you do it, then you have to deal with it.
The problem with control is that just one tempo gain may mean the end of the game for the opponent. Plus that some colors really fare poorly against be control to begin with. I mean: I pay two blue mana, let me just make your 15 mana spell you ramped like hell for not happen. The mere fact that everything that is not a land won't even have any effect is just the icing on the cake. If you destroy creatures or other permanents they at least trigger other effects, counter is just a Swiss army knife for way too little a cost. Name me one card with more utility, I will wait. And you pretty much take all the momentum away from your opponent.
I have such nostalgia now cause of this. Remember first learning of MTG when I moved back to NJ in 97 when I was in the 4th grade. Started out with 4th edition and even some old cards from alpha/beta and such. A shame I don't have them since they were in good condition and probably worth a penny or two. Great game though stopped around 2003 I think. No idea how much it changed but I am sure it did by a lot. Cheers to all
This is a fine example of why I will giggle with glee when RTR rotates. Watch as half of control, the good half, just disappears from Standard. Those will be truly the Halcyon days.
Tyler O'Guinn Sphinx rev does hurt tho. It wont disappear but I dont think it would be as powerful unless the new standard unleashes a similar card or any control card thats bonkers.
But isn't that the thing, though? Whenever standard rotates out we tend to see the format become aggressive, but as the next two block sets come out we also tend to see more control.
And into the Commander they go hahaha...which I guess is kinda good but kind of sad....bye bye, Lazav and Mirko Vosk....and Consuming Abberation...I love you!
Yum Telgren Same. I may play the games but I never bother to learn all the slang and the "pro" terms that people make up as time goes by. I remember it took me months to understand that AYBABTU was a reference to "All your base are belong to us". . and if you don't know what that is, you must be very young indeed.
***** I get the reference, but that was actually the first time I saw "AYBABTU". I tend to unwillingly pick up some slang from other people at my university, but I don't take the game as seriously at them, more casual than the casuals in a way.
Urzas saga/ legacy is still some of the most amazing magic cards/ stories I've ever read. If you're New to magic, do yourself a favor and read up on it... Does anyone know if rose water has development notes on the set?
Playing against U/W is like playing against your friend in a video game where 5 minutes into playing he unplugs your controller beats your character standing still for 20 mins then walks away smiling and feeling like the better player.
Rosewater's love for blue has ruined MTG so much. The fact you can have one guy basically play with himself (Floch) in a finals match and win easily shows how much this game has been broken with crap 'meta' cards.
Didn't say anything about creatures...I was talking about blue. Blue has been more prominent in finals and tourneys than any other color. When you can just play your own hand and ignore an opponent (which isn't even supposed to be blue's specialty), it doesn't make for a fun game either.
+Anteares Columbus I understand what you mean, but blue is supposed to represent the mind and magic associated with it. What do you think they could do differently outside of what they already do?
You realize that blue is pretty much the weakest colour at the moment in modern and the meta is pure aggro. Jeskai Control is not enough to keep them in place. Also, this game is wonderful.
The double standard of this is that if you don't try it you won't understand it and complain about it but you have played another card game and gave it a chance hence you understand it
Protection on a creature gives the creature four things (DEBT) D: Can't be "D"ealt damage by creatures of that color E: Cant be "E"quipped or enchanted by equipment or enchantments of that color B: Can't be "B"locked by creatures of that color T: Can't be "T"argeted by spells of that color Since Languish doesn't target and instead says "All," as Brian Johnson says, your por-black creature still dies. If Languish said "Target creature gets -4/-4," your pro-black creature couldn't even be targeted by it.

Freedom Panic agreed. Their format of showing the game is just for people that know all the cards, They should be showing the effects of the cards, how am I supposed to know whats going on, If I don´t know what the cards are!?
What am I watching? What are these people talking about? Why is this recommended for me?
Poke Power Because you like pokemon, it's trying to mature you.
MisterT94 Gee tnx mate :D
It's a bitch to watch but its fun to play. I know the game in and out I don't understand half this stuff. The card names aren't as iconic as yugiohs or Pokemon but it is far more addictive & expensive
blackbokuto So expensive D:
True. I'm just saying yugioh and Pokemon keep it simple while magic is like an advanced version of Pokemon cards
Christopher Ortega no super fast summoning here comes turn 3 emrakul in modern! Woo... kill me
Welcome! We hope you’ve enjoyed your stay thus far!
**Control Master Race**: Die Aggro! You don't belong in this meta!
**Aggro peasant chief**: It was not by my choice, that I am once again given cards. I was called here by players who wish to play faster!
**Control Master Race**: Faster?! You feast on slow decks and make them your buys!
**Aggro peasant chief**: Perhaps the same could be said of all archetypes...
**Control Master Race**: Your words are as empty as your handsize! The meta ill needs a savior such as you!
**Aggro peasant chief**: What is a deck? A miserable little pile of cards! But enough talk... turn 1, take 2!
best comment here!
best comment ever xD
the entire comment section of this video is just an endless diamond mine it's astounding
I love that Floch wasn't playing the standard U/W control we've been seeing for forever, with Elspeth and Aetherling. No, he goes for one with 4 quickens and an elixier of immortality.
And that Sheep-Angel sideboard action. I love it.
That Oakland Raiders hat pretty sums up my opinion on Jackson Cunningham.
So im still learning about this game , im 30 , anddddd it still makes no sense to me lol.
+Steven Melton Art and Paintings BECAUSE THIS CARD GAME SUCKS!! PLAY UNO!
+Steven Melton Art and Paintings go get magic duels on steam its free i have it
hmm ill look into that
Everybody is freaking out because Floch uses control... it doesn't matter, he made it to the FINALS thats more than any other pro on tour could say. Well done Ivan
Ahh good. I was having trouble sleeping. This should put me right out.
I've seen Jackson Cunningham's pensive hunch in my recommended videos for more than a year now.
Cunningham looks so likeable and sincere xD
Go go go!
I was watching NBA highlights and i end up here... wtf is this?
lol same
Agreed.
TehHitSingle agreed to what..?
Fernando Valles nerdgasm from this video?
Ig I couldnt tell wat was happening
I'm new to this game but this video helped me learn a lot about how to start the game, and how a turn goes
wtf..csn we get a zoom in on the cards on the table...i mean ive played for years and i have no idea wtf is goin on here
“We will see freshness with khans of tarkir” with no idea of siege rhino
"Who is that???"
"A basic Planeswalker"
"oh, very good!"
Damn....BURN!!!!
1:37:52 "thats right, just ramming it down his throat" Fuckin died aha
was just wondering, what color is that watch band. and wow, they zoomed in for me. thanks camera crew, what would i have done without you!
Wow I though Jackson Cunningham really deserved the win. He was able to get around the blue/white control despite all his mulligans and mana screw! Then floch mulls with Jackson having a really good 7 into his only archangel and 2 sheep....... WTF
My pulse is racing, time to go back to watching competitive knitting...
So 2 life gaining sheep, standing next to an Archangel obliterated a group of Lions Wurms & an Ooze.
Sounds like a new sci-fi series.
If you listen closely you can hear their father sobbing in shame
Brings back memories, this was the first match I've seen i think.
This uw controll is the most uw controll that ever uw controlled.
Which spell? Dispel! :D
I know ivan's gettin alot of hate for the deck he played, but to be co,pletely honest i love tat deck choice. its for people who love to troll the oponent and make sure to not give them any chance of winning. I would make a couple changes in the deck list though.
"It's for people who love to troll the opponent." And this, folks, is why control players have a bad name.
Definitely have to add at least 2 detention spheres.
David Smith I didnt think of that, now that i am that be cool to.
i dont thin so put detention spheres because the deck use plannar cleasing
It only runs two Planar Cleansing's correct? And honestly, I'd almost say D-Sphere is a better option than Planar Cleansing. Less cost prohibitive, and better overall utility (at least until Supreme Verdict rotates).
Some hardcore shit. So fucking manly.
Trevor Brown I laugh everytime
Adam Turner Stop being ridicilous. This is a childrens card game and your angry comment won't change that. Those people probably run around with a YUGIOH Duelldisk in their town and jerk off to hentai stuff.
Torrox Morrox Whatever fucktard.
Trevor Brown Wow. Way to insult autistic people. What a douche.
I wish that these videos would show a picture of the card whenever a card is played so that if u dont know it you can pause and see.
I find it funny that i dont know is going on but i watch this because i love trading card games
Same.. I’ve never played a single game of MTG, yet I’m an hour and a half into the video lol
Divination into land/divination: “I’ve demonstrated a loop”
as a yugioh player i have no idea whats going on
Lol i know the feeling bro! Attempting to get into magic and actually finding it quite enjoyable :) i still have love for both of the games though
man I loved that format. Its strange that its only 2 years ago that we could play elspeth, verdict and crazy cards like that.
One of my fav decks to this day. Love azorius control. I still watch this from time to time.
I am laughing because whenever I see a video of card gamers I imagine "cock magic" episode from South Park with the ultra over-the-top commentator judging the rooster card games.
+Despond That episode is why I'm here right now lmao
Wow, I'm actually sorry for Jackson. That's a tough matchup.
33:40 Jackson plays the second copy of the planes walker to use the ability twice but i thought when you summon a second one that they would both die or is that an old rule.
Old rule indeed.
Arthur Gonçalves it's not an old rule i just recently bought a deck including 2 planeswalkers and it said in the info thingy if you control two or more planeswalkers with the same type they both die
Current rules:
306. Planeswalkers
306.1. A player who has priority may cast a planeswalker card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Casting a planeswalker as a spell uses the stack. (See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”)
Thank you
Do these pro players build their decks just on the luck of booster packs, or do they buy individual cards, or a combination of both?
I would guess a combination of both. But it's not like they crack packs until they get a playset of Elspeths. We all have to buy some individual cards.
guys like this pretty much just buy singles and maybe buy a pack for shits and giggles, But id say 99% singles
Basically they just buy the cards, but I would assume that they crack packs for their collections
i have heard that these players get there deck from Mtg official but im not sure :P
isarex88 No. Players buy their own cards. You see Ivan's shirt? Blackborder is a huge store that sells singles. They are most likely the ones sponsoring him. Starcity Games and ChannelFireball are other famous sponsors.
Why does the guy in the backwards cap look so...anxious? Like hes gonna pass out at any moment?
+MeadioKringus Very good point.
But the pressure is no joke.
you should see Yuuki Ichikawa play. Dude looks like he's about to go postal all the time.
the commentators must have played for years to know every single detail about the match and the decks i couldnt do that but this looks interesting
Cheers to all
When Playing ProTour can u use any cards u want or do u have to use the cards released the year of that tour
Plant Gollum depends on format
This is a fine example of why I will giggle with glee when RTR rotates. Watch as half of control, the good half, just disappears from Standard. Those will be truly the Halcyon days.
Control still has Dissolve, Dissipate, Swan Song, Elspeth, and will most likely have a 4-mana sweeper in Khans of Tarkir.
In my experience, it is Sphinx that wins control games. So many times I have been against Control, brought them to
And into the Commander they go hahaha...which I guess is kinda good but kind of sad....bye bye, Lazav and Mirko Vosk....and Consuming Abberation...I love you!
good to see in a game that you dont have to be in shape, that they are anyway. Take note, bowling.
2019 anyone?
2024
Have been watching the MTG on youtube, the on-line version. ANy thoughts, and would that be a better starting point for a true beginner
+sven Kjarlsven Magic Duels for console or PC. It's completely free.
Best mtg match + commentary ever imo.
1:35:30 I'd have laughed if he fogged him and attacked back for lethal.
"I've demonstrated a loop" had me rolling!
46:18
No idea what the fuck has happened.
Nice to see there's even a larger following now that i'm older.. never imagined this game would have 1+ million youtube watchers.
last game was the strangest game of UW aggro i have ever seen
what is it with me and card games first yugioh now magic I am obsessed
yeah pokemon is fun too especially the games
Aayam Kc The Pokémon trading card game is trash. The video games are alright tho
I love that he won it with.... A "Floch" of sheep.
Almost as good as "Dezani water" from PT Theros.
Watching my first magic match and i am lost as a child in forest..... O.o
I'm a casual player and I get lost easily when watching these pro games. Way above my level :P
Welcome to the multiverse we have been waiting for you 😠😂😁
Yum Telgren Same.
I tend to unwillingly pick up some slang from other people at my university, but I don't take the game as seriously at them, more casual than the casuals in a way.
first time ever playing = feeling like getting shot in the head
Who agrees?
I dont understand why there aren't two cameras, one behind and above each player, so we can actually see the board; or is it just me?
Urzas saga/ legacy is still some of the most amazing magic cards/ stories I've ever read. If you're New to magic, do yourself a favor and read up on it... Does anyone know if rose water has development notes on the set?
LOL all the people hating on control decks. Sorry, but that's just how the metagame is right now.
GADNUK breaker of worlds plays a fugitive wizard. !!!!
Daniel Webb "hold on, hold on, hold on"
Playing against U/W is like playing against your friend in a video game where 5 minutes into playing he unplugs your controller beats your character standing still for 20 mins then walks away smiling and feeling like the better player.
looking at this during the current standard, these decks are sooooo underpowered. Real powercreep
what are the rules abuot building decks and cards from different series>?
Tbh I think mcnuggets would beat them. Hes up and coming but hes got talent.
Rosewater's love for blue has ruined MTG so much. The fact you can have one guy basically play with himself (Floch) in a finals match and win easily shows how much this game has been broken with crap 'meta' cards.
Not lately, it was just this particular meta that was cancerous.
Creatures should never be the strongest cards in a deck. It dumbs down the game way to much.
Also, this game is wonderful.
what the fudge is this i dont understand shizzle ? why cant it be obvious like in hearthstone
The double standard of this is that if you don't try it you won't understand it and complain about it but you have played another card game and gave it a chance hence you understand it
sean maeder will this video help my mid range shaman survive mill druid ?
I hope you know Victor that the phrases "mid range" and "mill" originated from this game.
QUESTION: If i put a languish and and I have a creature with protection from black already there, will my creature die? PLEASE ANSWER!
yes BC languish does not target
depends if it's a 5/5 or higher, but if not, then yes it will die
Thx!
Protection on a creature gives the creature four things (DEBT)
D: Can't be "D"ealt damage by creatures of that color
E: Cant be "E"quipped or enchanted by equipment or enchantments of that color
B: Can't be "B"locked by creatures of that color
T: Can't be "T"argeted by spells of that color
Since Languish doesn't target and instead says "All," as Brian Johnson says, your por-black creature still dies. If Languish said "Target creature gets -4/-4," your pro-black creature couldn't even be targeted by it.
Beginner here,
what are those guys in the background doing?
Those who are watching and writing stuff on their tablets
They are making sure they are following rhe rules
