Abstinence and intimacy - Why Buddhist monks must follow strict rules

  • Abstinence is a religious keyword and for a Buddhist monk, it is playing a major role in their life. The monks of the temple in Bangkok serve the community. Their own needs and their state of mind and body have to take second place. In order to be reborn in a higher form, they have to follow strict rules. Greed is not permitted, the have to abstain from violence, and to respect other people. The monks are only allowed of physical closeness when there is no element of desire involved. They have to be very careful: If they make a mistake, they must leave the monastic community.

    Buddha taught celibacy for many reasons and it wasn't just because if one has children and a spouse, they can't be free. Even in Buddha's day, people knew to finish away from the female body if no kids were desired. The real reason he spoke against sexual conduct of any kind was that one couldn't be free if they were still tied to the chain of Lust. Buddha said that Lust was the chief over all the evils and that it was the most destructive. Buddha said that sexual energy was the strongest of all energies and so it was best to just avoid it due to the power of it. It is a strong distraction to the mind and the body and it is a bottomless pit. The physical representation of it is like a snake that eats the tail out of hunger.
    Even if a man were to sleep with one million women, he would still have the same lack of control over lust that would be equal to a man that has slept with only one woman in his lifetime. Buddha taught that Lust is what constantly drives reincarnation forward due to death and then rebirth. To get around temptation, he taught of viewing others as brothers, fathers, sisters, and mothers. He also said to view the opposite sex as if they had no skin if the urge was very strong. Hope this helps.

    They don't 'beg' for alms, they 'accept' alms.

    • @unk5138
      @unk5138 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The reason they use the word beg is to break their ego. Let's say one monk has money and can purchase food on his own. This leads to attachment over money owned, and thus they go to beg for food for the purpose of breaking their ego. Thus it's not offensive when one uses the word beg when it comes to monks. It's even how the Buddha used to call it.

      @@unk5138 Monks do not buy food! They do not beg. They walk along the road and stop if someone is waiting to offer food. Trust me, I know, there are five temples within spitting distance of my house.

      @@archiebald4717 brother, I know they don't carry money, I was just giving an example. Like how we are really attached to the money which we earn, thus to be detached the monks renounce themselves from the rest of the world. And for begging it's not in the literal sense that begging from people out of misery or desperation, it is just a term used to describe how they gather food for themselves, even Buddha uses the term begging and many monks too use it. Begging is not a bad term when it comes to monks as it's an ego breaking activity.

      I'd also stray away from using the word 'beg' since, as I see, offering food to monks is socially acceptable act done willingly. So it isn't begging, they don't even have to ask for food, they just collect it. But at no point can you see monks actually 'begging' or asking, as I assume from my limited knowledge of this culture.@@archiebald4717

    10:32 a sigma man. Im on a nofap journey. 45 days . being free from sexual thots is so liberating..you take off the extra weights off from your mind...still like the monk said, the desires comes very fast....vigilant you have to be....im on abstinence for success. it is my purpose..my spiritual mentor also advised this so strictly...an opposite gender can destroy your life in mere seconds....

      Indeed great will power from the monk.
      We should keep in mind that lust is one form of desire. There are many more, equally difficult desires and sensual pleasures.
      Being grateful for what you already have, seeing reality as it is - having right view, having no ill wills are keys to freedom from suffering.
      Good luck to your journey 🙏 keep going.

      It doesn't matter to the Universe. It probably doesn't matter to the dead, even if they do exist in some form, and that is a big, skeptical if. It only matters if you care about it, but you won't exist forever to care about that. Of course, it is an unavoidable fate. At one point in time, humans will no longer exist. That worry that humans will not exist will end when humans become extinct. So, in the long run, it does not matter whether people engage in procreation or not.

      @@AmazingStoryDewd no, I am fine. The thing is, nothing has an intrinsic value. If you think clearly, the fact is everything we value is only valuable as long as we value them. We are giving meaning to stuff by ourselves. I am not saying it is a bad thing though. Values give morals, direction and sanity. Life is easier that way. Wanting and having children is fine. But, extinction of humans is inevitable, whatever we do, whether we accept it or not. I, you, or anyone else having children will not change that.

    Abstain from violence? Those novices are whipped on a daily basis! Also some smoke, and I doubt that South Asian monasteries are void of sex. There is a huge difference between the ideal and the reality. It's a constant struggle, and I don't see why?
