True, however Hammerhead was the major villain. Yuri did make a small cameo near the end and it was set up, also Kingpin wasn't someone Pete knew, and was a arch-enemy before the game.
Welp... guess I cant do a review of this game anymore. The god of spider-man youtube content has already given his thoughts and basically said what I wanted to say about the game. Great review again GodzillaMendoza. My god this review so good. I cant. Gonna be rewatching this alongside the retrospective series.
I actually liked the tinkerer fight because she can literally do everything that the enemies you have fought in the game previously can do. So the game basically asks you to take everything you have learned while playing and bring it all together for the final boss fight. That's pretty cool.
That's what I loved so much about her final boss fight. She can do all the things her army could do and then some, so the game is like "Hey so you remember this dude and that gal etc etc? Take all of them and fight it all at once."
In my opinion tinkerer is the best boss fight in the entire insomniac Spider-Man games franchise all two of them because there are actual multiple stages to the fight
@@ezzekieldirks8542 I really like fights like those where they don't just test your resourcefulness but also your knowledge of all the enemy types and even yourself. If you've fought the Underground you know how to fight her and that attention to detail makes it a great deal more engaging and rewarding to experienced players.
18:11 yeah as a fan of classic prowler I'm sad he'll never be in any Spider-Man movie or game 😔 he was almost in Spider-Man 4 before that got cancelled
14:07 funny enough this was a point of contention between spidey's co creators, supposedly. According to the story, back when the green goblin's identity was a mystery, stan lee want it to be someone pete knew (in this case his friend's dad) for a big dramatic punch, while steve ditko wanted it to be some random guy, believing that crime should be anonymous.
I feel like the "Insomniac connection" between spiderman and the villains of the game isn't as bad as you make it out to be. Narratively, you make sense of both sides and find a reason to connect and understand each character being affected. In the first game, for example, they made Otto and Peter partners in Otto's lab. We all know Otto Octavius becomes Doc Ock but it's the fact that we can understand and relate to Otto making the transition to Doc Ock more painful to not only Peter but the player as well and that is what I think Insomniac shined. In Miles' case, I feel like the player didn't have the chance to connect with Phin as much as we did with Otto making the dynamic almost dull and redundant. I have high hopes for Spider-Man 2 though because of how well they made the first game and how gripping the story was. The character dynamic will still be incredible and having Harry as Venom is an interesting idea that I have faith in Insomniac will do right.
Yeah it definitely feels like Prowler ended up picking up the slack for that one. It genuinely changes both characters for the better by the end and I think the Mixtape storyline with Miles Father is arguably the best part of that. I loved that story that came from hearing Miles Dad talk about it so even though it was super obvious it was built up before and after to make it meaningful.
It however doesn’t work for phin and miles because phin is so stupid and unlikeable every second phin was on screen she made my blood boil especially that scene where she leaves miles for dead if want me to sympathize with her probably not a good idea to have her be such an asshole at least I let it slide with otto because his mind was affected by the neural interface and we don’t know that otto knows Peter is Spider-Man yet but here phin knows and it’s just disgusting she’s an utterly irredeemable villain at that point her sacrifice at the end meant jack sh🐬t because of how she treated miles and before you give me that whole “oh but he lied to her” yeah and so did she by not telling him that she’s the tinkerer,Rick was dead and attacking his mother’s campaign rally I can’t stand phin she ruins the entire experience of the game for me
Weird how you didnt point out how they retcanon’d miles now being from brooklyn visions instead of midtown high like the last game. Either way this was another lovely video and an absolute love letter to everything we love about Spider-Man!
I kinda assumed that he just transferred schools in between the original Spider-Man and Miles Morales, like in the Spider-Verse movie, since canonically the games are at least a few months apart
It honestly took me a long time to adapt to Miles’ weaker super jump, I’d try to jump onto a building and do midair tricks, and just end up eating shit and smashing into the ground
13:14 yeah I noticed that too I was fine with it in the first Spider-Man game but I hope it doesn't become a trend like I don't want kraven the hunter to be Spider-Mans mentor
But this is how it is on the comics. Doc Ock, Lizard, Green Goblin, Venom, etc were all people Peter knew personally before they became villains. It’s just kinda Spider-Man’s thing.
then in the third game they should use villans that had no conection with peters life, like mysterio, kraven, spider slayer, or even some from the last game from vilture to shocker. but atleast in the sequel peter gonna have no conflicted feelings about beating normans ass.
@@marcusmcneal7453 uh not really Doc Connors became the lizard before he met Spidey and he didn't even met Peter until later, Same with Ock, Eddie blamed Spider-Man for what he "did to him" but he learned the identity because of the symbiote , The only one with a connection was Norman
It seems to me like you were expecting a full-blown sequel here rather than a high-quality side story, that's part of why this is a much shorter game and story. The writers clearly knew what they were doing with the similarities between Miles and Phin and Otto and Peter, they were meant to parallel each other not be rip-offs, best seen when the two duos literally bump into each other during that flashback scene, they knew what they were doing there. You really seemed to expect Miles story to be too much of its own thing but by virtue of him being Peters protege on his first solo adventure that couldn't have been the case. This isn't about Miles becoming Spiderman it's about him recognizing his identity and potential to be his OWN Spiderman, so there will be similarities but they are very much his own, best seen when he takes the suit Peter made for him and makes the now iconic Miles suit. It parallels the scene from Peters game where Otto helps him make his white spider suit but serves a different purpose, there Peter was accepting a friends help in making himself a better suit but because he refuses to let too many people in on his secret that was pretty much all Otto could really do for him. Miles, on the other hand, comes to recognize that he doesn't have to do things as Peter does, he mentions at one point that Peter said it's a "rule" that you never tell anyone you're secret identity but this just doesn't work for Miles. He comes to find value in having his own support system to help him out, first with Ganke, then with Uncle Aaron, and even his mother are all let in on the secret and they all support and help him to varying degrees. This is something Peter has always been too afraid to do but it goes to further show how similar yet different he and Miles are. Predictable isn't always a bad thing, I too saw where things were likely going for Phin and I dreaded it every step of the way. I was hoping she could live through to the end but that obviously just wasn't meant to be, didn't matter at all that I saw her death coming. As for Simon, I mean I guess they could have had him get away but I don't mind him being caught either. It goes to further make Phins story even more tragic because this proves that Miles was right, if they had just gone public with everything Simon was doing he would have been arrested and Roxxon would have been finished, but she was so blinded by rage and grief that that option was unacceptable, she needed to make Simon hurt in any way she could, just as Otto couldn't let his beef with Norman go. I also LOVED everything done with Uncle Aaron, he's far more sympathetic here than he's ever been and I love that he isn't just stuck as a villain through to the end since he does get a moment of redemption at the end and could possibly begin to mend his relationship with Miles and his family later, but does still get arrested himself and is still paying for what he's done too. His side missions were some of the first ones I finished, just the right amount of challenge without being frustrating and the reward for finishing them was awesome and well worth it. I found this game's story to be, yes, shorter than the first but every bit as engaging. Part of this is me further relating to Miles as a young black man myself, that scene where he's about to be shot by the Roxxon guys on the bridge really hit me in a place. It's not exactly the Miles game I would have made but I'm more than happy with what I got.
The biggest problem for me personally, is that the new face just makes Peter look WAY too young for his age, this is supposed to be a Peter who's almost been Spider-Man for a decade, yet he looks like he just got his powers a few weeks ago and it makes things even WORSE when you consider the fact, that his girlfriend and the woman that he APPARENTLY slept with look SIGNIFICANTLY older than him which creates this uncomfortable and disturbing pedo vibe that I just can't shake off. Seriously, whatever Insomniac's reason was for changing his face, they should've just stayed with the one that we had which fit in properly with Peter's age. The only character that I wouldn't of minded to get a face change is MJ, because I don't know if it's just me, but every time I look at her all I can see is Ellie from The Last Of Us, no joke, I'm being serious on that.
Look its the same thing that happened with the puddle at least in prinple there is still the crazy cultists who want to kill new peters actor and the dumb people who are like “no of course it because of the jaw mussles being the same its not brand synergy I mean personally I am fine with either one emotionally attached to the first one the second one is fine you still look like a Parker I mean I just have to replay the game on remastered edition and then I’ll probably just be the same amount emotionally attached or not I mean I did 100% the game five times with old peters face HMMMM……
@@fromapov1610 original Peter looked way too unhealthy. His hair looked dead and his wrinkles and bags I could understand but it's way too jarring for me to realistically believe hes a Peter parker.
When we first meet Otto, he's just Peter's boss for this interesting new job. We get to watch them develop and lose their friendship from start to finish. That doesn't fit into the villains with a history formula at all. Besides, Insomniac is so good at writing those types of characters. It's not just the villains, either. MJ and Peter have been through so much together, it gives them a special bond that doesn't feel forced at all
I love the lore of 'the bone collector'. Maybe a version of spiderman or just a crazy guy that went through something similar to get the powers. Or a monster I'm overthinking this
Thank you so much for that rant on villains being former friends of the main character. I am so sick of this, ESPECIALLY in Spider-Man, and I just want some good old fashioned "bad guy" villains again.
Vulture, Electro, Scorpion, Rhino, Mysterio, Carnage to a certain extent, Black Cat to start with, Dic Ock in the comics, Hydro Man, Morbius, Kingpin, Tombstone, Shocker. I could go on. None of these have much of a personal connection to Peter past being a villain if Spidey
It’s kinda funny how most players like and use the base suit Miles makes in the story line but in the main Spider Man game, everyone is indifferent about the advance suit Octavius makes for Peter and just use the other variants of the suit.
It's probably because many people didn't like how the costume was orange in the first game, while miles has a really good looking costume with the contrast of black and red.
Finally, someone put into words exactly what I thought, and of course, it was you. No surprise there. One thing that's been bothering me is that a few people act like Miles is the only Spider Man who helps the little guy or helps the community as a whole with acts of good that might seem small, but as a whole have a huge impact, like Peter saving Gloria and pointing her at the right direction. Look at her now. And you pointed out exactly what I thought. Both Peter and Miles help the little guy and the community and are not above the smallest acts of kindness, Miles just allows himself to receive it back from the people he helps, being part of that community as both Miles and Spider Man, while Peter mostly keeps them at arm's length because of all his experiences until this point and because he just doesn't have this talent to connect with people that Miles has. He helps people but does the absolute best he can to not get help back because he's compassionate to a fault, and really doesn't like the idea of someone wasting their time to help him even if he does the exact same. And Miles might've been like that if Peter and Aunt May hadn't took him in, hadn't shown him kindness and helped him even though they didn't have much to do with Miles anyway. Miles allows himself to be loved back while Peter doesn't really like the idea of that, but hopefully will open up to that with Miles by his side now.
I agree with you about the story. It’s definitely told out of order. That’s a mistake a lot of modern day single player games make. The Last of Us 2 comes to mind. I feel like with this game (and TLOU2), I could re-edit the cutscenes to be in chronological order, and it would make the game 10x better. This game is still good tho. 8/10
Why does all of Xavier's Videos make me so emotional with nostalgia! Like I'm not crying or anything but his reviews/retrospective & the "gone wrong" series makes me remember the good old days of marvel comics & their media (Cartoon's, Video Games, etc.). During the times when people understood the characters they were portraying instead of changing them for the worse. (Miles is one of the exceptions.) Anyways great video and the jokes great. Some were subtle but on point.
Merry Christmas, Xavier! About Spider man's villains, while I agree with you in some points, I don't mind that the Spidey's villains are usually people who have a connection with him. This actually match with the main theme of Spider man stories, which is about action and consequences. Most of spider man stories are about Peter (or Miles) decisions and how his activites as Spider man affect his life as well the lifes of the people around them. The villains represent one of the results of their actions as heroes and make the conflitct more personal, putting Spider man in situation where he has to choose between his friend or do the right thing.
16:00 The worst part about Krieger is that his plan makes 0 sense because most power plants aren’t even located in the city they power (thanks Game Theory) so all Roxxon had to do was put the newform generator in a secluded desert and they get all the benefits and none of the evil shit, making him both an asshole AND a terrible businessman.
At 2:00 “that’s not gonna be funny at all for people watching my videos for the first time”, I’ve never watched your videos before this so when you said that it was factual but the fact that you brought attention to it made up for it completely and made it way funnier
about the villains the reason why I love mcu mysterio more than mcu vulture , he has no former connection to peter, other than his goals to manipulate him
I can see why you didn’t talk about this in the video, but I also think the diversity in the game was really special and was something that meant a lot to me. I obviously assumed they’d include characters of different ethnicities based off of the fact that that’s half of miles character (which is still great, just something I predicted), but I think that including a deaf character was awesome, especially because they didn’t paint her in a negative light, or make her disability seem annoying, she just seemed like a normal character who happened to be deaf. I also thought her relationship with miles was really sweet, and it was cool that they also made him seem very accepting of her. Also, a bit of a smaller inclusion, but they did include some lgbtq+ characters in the game. It was probably just for queer-baiting, but it still felt really cool. Also, not only was it cool that they included these minorities, but it also felt a lot more realistic. It made the world feel natural, because there obviously are people of these minorities all around, especially in new york, so it just made the world feel like an actual place and not just a fictional world. (I should clarify that I don’t think a story or world is bad because it doesn’t include a minority, I just think that including the minority makes it feel a lot more realistic)
Such a good point at 4:30 the boss fights have been severely lacking, the element of dynamic change of scenery would oh so sweet . Vulture and electro were both contained to that, an open air box. But based on on the overall combat animation improvement and the rhino chase I feel like they’re on their way. Spider-Man 2 could just be disgusting but we’ll see if they can anticipate that want. Someone should clip a link to insomniac.
Hes like that in the comics one of the few good things in the comics best version is into the spider verse hes a chilling villian but has qaulaties that he was redeemable
@@MarkelScott100 The prowler in the game is just Prowler but retired and absolutely regretted his life choices and only wants to protect miles in his mind after he found out he's Spider-man
I think it would have been good to go even further with the flashback being the start, and having Phin alongside Miles at Brooklyn Visions, he knows that Rick died, and he just took her distance as grieving for her brother. Instead she began to work with the Undeground, became the Tinkerer, and rose in power in the background. The reveal would come much later, after having more moments between Phin and Miles, making the reveal and sotry more impactful. Maybe the first Act would be. bit more focused on Fisk and his actions against Harlem, or even just some minor villains that take up the time to give us something to do in between the emotional points that further develop the relationships. Maybe even investigating Roxxon because Miles (and Peter) are suspicious of their actions in regards to holding Rhino, and discovering that they're enhancing his armour, which leads into an attack from the Underground as they look for Nuform shipments. I'm just spitballing some ideas here. I have no idea how well this would flow with the rest of the story.
This is one of my favorite videos you've ever done. Loved all the points you made I feel like you took the words right out of my mouth lol. Excellent job!!!
I personally like the spider-verse version of Miles the most but this version is way better than the one we saw in the last game, like you said he was pretty boring but in this one they made him better and different. I loved this game honestly way more than the other one and also just haven’t gotten bored and I’ve been playing it a lot, with the last one I got bored after a while
13:53 I feel like what's gonna happen is that Harry/Venom is gonna stomp Peter because of the connection but Miles would save him and give it his all because he wouldn't care who he is. That's if we can even switch between the two spider-men at all, just an idea.
I disagree about the boss fights, I felt that this game did them way better than Spider-Man PS4 2018. All the boss fights in Spider-Man 2018 made you do the same tactics each time with very little variation, the Mr Negative boss battle in the train was awful, and the Doc Ock fight kept using the same canned in animations. In Spider-Man Miles Morales each boss battle had multiple phases and felt way more grand in scale, especially in terms of destruction in my opinion. Like when you fight Roxxon suited Rhino and Miles and Phin can do team attacks against Rhino, or when Miles fights Phin and the whole building is collapsing and each layer falls away while going through the next phase in the fight, that's amazing to me.
Miles and Peter are like Wally and Barry from Flash Comics. Barry was respected by his community and holped them, but Wally was a friend to everyone in the city
Your channel is fucking awesome. TH-cam algorithm finally did its job. I really hope they learn from this for the sequel, if it's more of the same it's gonna get derivative really fast. Especially if they don't add Brooklyn and Queens to explore. Shit even Jersey.
Honestly, I can't wait for the day that Miles gets his own name that isn't just "Spiderman" or "Miles's Spiderman". Something fitting for him, maybe take on the "Prowler" name? Or something that helps him really step out of Peters shadow in this universe.
I also love how the FNSM app was how you got the side missions. It just feels more natural than people just standing around who happen to see Spider-man, call out to him, and have their problem solved
I agree so much about the Boss Fights. I also hope they bump up the quality, i played on the hardest difficulty in the game and could count the amount of times i died. And i'm not that much of an "Experienced Gamer" or whatever lol. I hope combat gets a little more difficult and Web Swinging gets to feel more rewarding with obstecals or fall damage added in for a sense of danger and a sense of "i must get that right" ya'know?
Been listening to the retrospective Playlist while playing Spider-man 2 (PS5) and I still absolutely love your retrospectives. Keep up the good work, Xavier.

Welp... guess I cant do a review of this game anymore. The god of spider-man youtube content has already given his thoughts and basically said what I wanted to say about the game. Great review again GodzillaMendoza. My god this review so good. I cant. Gonna be rewatching this alongside the retrospective series.
I would love to check out your channel and see your more in depth thoughts on the game!
God I love hobie brown, his arc and what it shows about Peter’s heart and goal in being a hero.
I've been wanting to read more issues with Hobie in them, can you please recommend some for me?
In my opinion tinkerer is the best boss fight in the entire insomniac Spider-Man games franchise all two of them because there are actual multiple stages to the fight
Tinkerer and Prowler are my two favorites with a close second to them being Taskmaster.
I hope they will do venom like that similiar to the ultimate spider-man game if you know you know😎
@@ezzekieldirks8542 I really like fights like those where they don't just test your resourcefulness but also your knowledge of all the enemy types and even yourself. If you've fought the Underground you know how to fight her and that attention to detail makes it a great deal more engaging and rewarding to experienced players.
Which makes it hurts all the more of that she’s such a weak character

18:11 yeah as a fan of classic prowler I'm sad he'll never be in any Spider-Man movie or game 😔 he was almost in Spider-Man 4 before that got cancelled
Nope. Spidey 4 was gonna be Vulture
It was going to be mysterio
It was gonna be joe
Spiderman 4 was gonna be the lizard
It was going to be me
14:07 funny enough this was a point of contention between spidey's co creators, supposedly.
@Bobby Papoutsis I agree with you on the part about the science center, but the game does reference how the Roxxon Center was built recently
It's super weird to me, I mean they couldn't have just made it so that Phin went to Brooklyn Visions? I don't really mind but still.
The game really makes you feel like an inexperienced Spider-Man lol
6:34 they really did just outright ignore that comic, huh.
I kinda hope they at least talk about it in spider-man ps5
Is understandable, not everyone reads comics, they only put this version of Spider-Man to increase sales.
13:14 yeah I noticed that too I was fine with it in the first Spider-Man game but I hope it doesn't become a trend like I don't want kraven the hunter to be Spider-Mans mentor
I hope they do something similar to what Game Theory is predicting to happen in the next game.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game had Kraven as Spider-Man’s mentor and it was just as shit as you would think

7:15- 10:51 THAT!!! All of THAT!!!

When we first meet Otto, he's just Peter's boss for this interesting new job. We get to watch them develop and lose their friendship from start to finish. That doesn't fit into the villains with a history formula at all. Besides, Insomniac is so good at writing those types of characters. It's not just the villains, either. MJ and Peter have been through so much together, it gives them a special bond that doesn't feel forced at all
They did it so good that we felt his pain

The DLC had Hammerhead. He was just an evil dickhead. And lame.
That's totally on them, lol. Course you can have bad versions of villains who aren't your father figure too
Vulture, Electro, Scorpion, Rhino, Mysterio, Carnage to a certain extent, Black Cat to start with, Dic Ock in the comics, Hydro Man, Morbius, Kingpin, Tombstone, Shocker. I could go on. None of these have much of a personal connection to Peter past being a villain if Spidey
Chameleon, Sandman. The reason they are never used is because the most famous villains are the ones who have personal connections, like Green Goblin
@@auberginemanproductions1608 It depends on what version of those characters you’re talking about
It’s kinda funny how most players like and use the base suit Miles makes in the story line but in the main Spider Man game, everyone is indifferent about the advance suit Octavius makes for Peter and just use the other variants of the suit.
It's probably because many people didn't like how the costume was orange in the first game, while miles has a really good looking costume with the contrast of black and red.
"Is this the end of brown spiderman" caught me off guard. LOL
You did NOT just predict harry being venom 2 YEARS in advance omg

Like I'm not crying or anything but his reviews/retrospective & the "gone wrong" series makes me remember the good old days of marvel comics & their media (Cartoon's, Video Games, etc.).
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is one of my favorite video games. I give it a 9.95/10
16:00 The worst part about Krieger is that his plan makes 0 sense because most power plants aren’t even located in the city they power (thanks Game Theory) so all Roxxon had to do was put the newform generator in a secluded desert and they get all the benefits and none of the evil shit, making him both an asshole AND a terrible businessman.

the reason why I love mcu mysterio more than mcu vulture , he has no former connection to peter, other than his goals to manipulate him
Lol that's a reason I like vulture more
I can see why you didn’t talk about this in the video, but I also think the diversity in the game was really special and was something that meant a lot to me.

Yup. Harry Osborne is Venom. He nailed it!!
When I beat doc oc I was like "That was easy"
