    For as far back as we can trace our existence, humans have been fascinated with death and resurrection. But is resurrection really possible? And what is the actual difference between a living creature and a dead body anyway? Randall Hayes delves into the scientific theories that seek to answer these age-old questions.

      Benett Malcolm - is it, though? It's a pointless uphill battle we fool ourselves into believing is worth something. When trying to prevent death at every single point of time, we don't learn to make use of the time we have because we keep wasting it on trying to stay alive 24/7, only for our efforts to be in vain. Is it really worth it to not die at any cost? Everything that has a beginning will always have an end.

    • @BonnieBoestar
      @BonnieBoestar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If you have a definite way to never die, then you do whatever it takes to get that. Once you're immortal, you are now free of consequences. You killed somebody to get immortality? Haha, what are cops going to do, shoot you? Oh, they imprisoned you? You're still going to be there when the prison crumbles to dust, and you'll walk right out.

    I like how this show covers religion, myths, opinions, studies and even science when talking about things like life and souls. It give an even time to each and in no way discredits anyone. Rather let's others learn through basic sciences but still explains our bodies functions. Very well done.

      I mean, it went over religions, myths, and theories, but in no way did it suggest that they are equally probable or just opinions. It pretty clearly showed how religious and pre-modern constructions of death and the undead were false and were dismissed with more research and scientific discovery.

      The moment when your body stops "working" against the increasing entropy and the process of dying can't be stopped. +PlasmaMongoose I hate saying this, and believe me, it's not meant to sound horrible, it's just nature. I lost my sister about 7 years ago, I held her hand as she passed away, in a coma on her hospital bed. F*cking leukemia, and f*cking doctor that was a carrier for swine flu after her chemo.
      NOTE: the hospital gives some REALLY amazing drugs before they pull that plug, akin to what you get when you go down for surgery, and that's a complete blank.
      But the answer: Approximately 10-12 minutes after her last breath. So long as there was breath, there was circulating oxygen. But, blood stores oxygen, and even immobile, that oxygen will be leeched by organs. That process is relatively quick, depending on body temperature, but in general, the brain itself survives about 4-6 minutes after oxygen deprivation before likely sustaining irreparable brain damage. I've read an old study that says the brain can still feel signals after 12ish minutes.
      But again, remember those drugs. The body's natural instincts take over for a minute, trying to breathe, to fight, but her brain would have been on shutdown, so none of that would have registered. If you've never had surgery, the best way to explain it is: You lay there, and they tell you "Breathe deep, and count backward from 10." Me: "Te...." and then you wake up in your recovery bed minus a gallbladder wondering WTF just happened.

      +Onizuma13 Yes but we can never prevent death completely. We might be able to regenerate all our organs one day, or even replace a dead heart and reanimate someone. But we can never piece back together someone blown up by a bomb, for example. So death will always be a part of our lives, it might just become easier to avoid over time.

      +bilibili68 The real question is not when is someone dead, but when is someone someone. And obviously you can't prevent death if someone gets blown to pieces because they'd be dead already. Still though, you could clone that person after their death and a person with the same genome would be alive again. They wouldn't be the same person though right? They won't even have the same personality because there is no way to transfer memories. This got me wondering: When is someone someone? You wouldn't say it's determined by their bodies because someone who's lost a leg is still him/herself. Is it determined by their personality? I'd say so, however this means someone is in fact someone because of (part) of their body, as personality is formed by the genome and memories, the genome stored in every cell and the memories in the brain. If someone is someone because of their personality though, does that mean someone who loses all their memories is actually dead and replaced by a new "person", clean slate. And would that mean that everytime my personality changes I die and I'm reborn as a new person? kind of rambling on here, I'll stop...

    • @bilibili68
      @bilibili68 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Luuk V Those are all very interesting questions of course. I think someone is someone because of their personality, I agree. So cloning the genome is not enough. But your personality is not just your memories, it's your brain as a whole. So if you are a quick-tempered, but very generous person, you'd probably remain that way even if you lost all your memories. But then of course the real question becomes, so if I can upload all my memories and consciousness to a computer can I live forever? Would that person still be me? What if the computer could run a simulation to make me feel like I still had a body, and I didn't even know I was a computer? What if we are already living like that? Yeah this could go on for a while..

      Same, I don't really believe in a Heavene or Hell, but I do wonder if there is really nothing after death. Like, does that mean that all consciousnesses fade away, that that all ceases to exist? But on the other hand it would make sense I guess, that just like how we came into existence, our existence will also cease... I think that that would be sad, because I would really like to see what will happen to earth after my death.

      In the future, you'll be able to gather 'impo'' points for every act you do that is important and valuable to the human race; the more a person is unique and rare in the area of his or hers field, the more chance you have to get a high impo score.(Getting a Nobel prize is about 1million points).
      Of course this only counts for the regular masses, rich people will of course be resurrected all the time since they are the so called important people of the world, even though a lot of them will only be in those positions of power because they have made powerful dynasty's for themselves and most of them keep each other in power by nepotism.
      In the end the world will be run by an elite group of people who will be handing out slivers of power to only whom they deem worthy, I can't wait :D!

    ABOUT THE SOUL WEIGHT TEST: the scientific experiment held was very poorly done because there was NO control group and there were many variables that could contribute to the loss of weight. Think about this, what would you release from your body at the time of death that would be that light in weight? Your last breath, your muscles might relax, your bladder might release liquid but most likely, it was the person's last breath that caused the change in weight

    • @mixiekins
      @mixiekins 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      to clarify, taking in air doesn't alter your weight, it alters buoyancy and volume, but not weight. perspiration on the surface of your skin and losing water through vaporization in your respiratory system does cause the shedding of weight through the loss of water (same reason you should breathe through your nose in the desert), but ceasing to breathe doesn't expedite that process. The more valid point here is the evacuation of bowels and dessication via the large surface area of the skin being exposed to a dry environment.

    No one really dies in the sense that they vanish into nothingness. Too much emphasis is put on the body and very little to no emphasis is put on the soul or conscience. Yes, the body wears out and ages after so many years, but the soul and conscience do not age. The body dies but the soul carries on. Think about what happens to you when you dream. Your body is in a dead state and your mind/soul/conscience is living events as if you're physically moving around and seeing things even though your eyes are shut. Dreams are a glimpse of life after death. Your body is nothing but a shell for your short trip on earth. It's not the be-all and end-all of human existence. There is more to the human life than existing on earth. The journey of the soul is eternal and passes through a lot of stations along the way. Life on earth is just one of those stations.

      TED-Ed also, sometimes, makes extraordinary videos, just like Kurzgesagt. Would you still be here if not the quantity?
      It takes a very long time for Kurzgesagt team to make their videos. It's a tough process - script, animation, quality, annotation, music composition e.t.c.

    this video seemingly gives the false illusion that having cellular energy, cytological and physiological processes will continue in homeostasis... it's important to remember that most cell death is due to improper cell function, or external cues acting on the cell.

    • @darrendo6117
      @darrendo6117 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Age is accompanied by somatic mutations and error. Accumulation of these errors are typically what cause cell turnover. Death due to insufficient molecular energy is less than likely to be the common cause of death by old age.

      Exactly the cell eventually gets a mutation that causes it to not be able to work thus not being able to move it's ATP around. Making the molecules drift apart and breakdown.

    I've always thought it sad that there will be a day that no one is left who remembers us. No one remembers any of the famous people we think we know. We don't remember them, we've only heard or read stories about them. That's not remembering them. I remember my great grandfather but I'm the only person alive who does remember him. So when I'm going. He's gone. Sad.

    Fascinating. The only question I have is about consciousness. How in the world can little cells come together and make people able to talk and think and what not? Cells can think? It’s actually really creepy to think about though.. A little cell multiplied to make humans billions of years later. Freaky. I’m still not convinced we don’t have a soul quite yet.

    I think we have to difference "resurrect" and "revive". The second is about someone who has passed away and then came to life (but can re - die), the first one is about someone who has died but came to life, BUT can't re - die.
