How do you PREVENT a stroke? 1. Reduce Stress 2. Reduce fatty foods that dump blood thickening fats into your bloodstream 3. Reduce Sodium (salt) intake. Sodium raises blood pressure. 4. Increase oxygen flow throughout your body by making sure you're breathing properly and no blood flow is cut off or reduced by anything. Good luck!
You can’t “PREVENT” a stroke (it has no cure), you can only lower the risk of getting a stroke. And you forgot one of the most vital aspects that can significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is EXERCISE. A lack of exercise (remaining sedentary all day), alongside smoking and obesity, is one of the biggest risk factors when it comes to cardiovascular diseases When it comes to fats, unsaturated fats (lowers blood cholesterol levels) are actually good for you. Try to avoid saturated fats (which increases blood cholesterol levels -> increases buildup of plaque). Too much unhealthy fats can also lead to atherosclerosis, and interesting fact: about 90% of heart attacks are caused by atherosclerosis (disorder caused by buildup of plaque inside of artery walls). Sodium is also crucial for your body’s function. A lack of sodium causes sodium deficiency, so the best answer is to regulate the amount of sodium you consume. Not too much, not too little. Although breathing properly is important, it does not necessarily reduce the risks of a stroke. However, going outside for a walk does increase the concentration of blood in the body compared to breathing the air at home (another reason to exercise outside). When it comes to reducing the risks of cardiovascular disorders, exercise, a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle are the most important factors. Our bodies are not built to sit in a chair all day, so get up and walk around and do some exercises. It not only reduces the risk of cardiovascular disorders, it also strengthens your heart muscles (heart wears out slower).
@@tomato-v8x You shouldn’t “avoid” saturated fats - our bodies need these in order to function properly. You should however, limit them though, just like any other nutrient.

This really freaks me out. It’s currently three AM. Every single person in my family is asleep and no one would even know if I had a stroke right now. It would be hours at best before I got treatment or help. Id literally be a walking dead person (brain damage) for the rest of my life. Also, modern medical science is incredible, how they do the things they do to treat this amazes me.
I’m a stroke survivor at 44 years of age. I lost my ability to raise my arm and leg when I was on the toilet in the early morning. They got me super quick in an ambulance to the hospital and I had a thrombectomy procedure to remove the clot from my brain. That save my life and I have full physical and cognitive ability after the episode, I’m traveling really well! Prior I was super healthy going to to gym 4 times a week and looking after myself, it came out of nowhere. I feel so blessed that a got to a hospital quickly and in the hands of specialists. Look after everyone presenting like this, it doesn’t just happen to the elderly. ✌️
This year, I'm practicing for my Proficiency certificate and I am trying to improve my vocabulary. Your channel is really helping out! Thank you very much for the quality content and keep up the good work!
My grandmother had a stroke on October 17th of this year. I went into her room to turn off her television and found her on the floor. I called 911 immediately. She passed away 10 days later from complications of the stroke. The look on her face the night I found her is one that I will never forget. I just hope and pray that she didn't suffer too much. It's both amazing and unfortunate how quickly life can change. I miss her a lot!
My dad had a mini stroke a few weeks ago and then a major stroke yesterday. His left side of the body is numb, swollen, and his face is drooped. They took the clot out and cleaned the artery, they did an MRI today. I hope it doesn’t do permanent damage, it saddens and scares me to see him life this. He is 70 years old.. ugh I love you dad
My dad too suffered a stroke last month he is fine now after having a bypass surgery. But the weird experience still disturbs me a lot mentally .And I don't think I will ever forget it.
My grandma had a stroke when I was younger. I didn’t understand it all then but looking back now, I thank God she’s still here. One of the things I do remember was she lost the ability to speak for a few days. I can’t imagine what life would’ve been like had that been permanent 💔 it’s crazy to see a visual of what was happening.
Thanks for sharin it, TED. My Dad passed away last month after several years suffered from stroke. May peace rest upon him. Hope for times to come, this will bring more awareness to all. Thank you 😊

My aunt is now on 2nd stroke my uncle almost cheated on her and she started stalking the girl everyday, she even didnt sleep and always sleeping like 7am in the morning i feel so bad for my aunt even her son shouting at her for need to buy foods everyday :((
My mom was hospitalized after she got 1st stroke. She was able to move normally in a day. She received necessary treatment until she was discharged hospital in 13 days. Then less than 24 hours, she hit by stroke again... She is now suffering from hemiparesis. And doctor said that she will less likely to gain back the normal move. Speed is important when you see 1st sign of a stroke, at same time, recurrence rate is highest at first 2weeks from initial stroke.
Truly! As a stroke victor, an Advanced Toastmaster and medical/neural fan, I'm exhausted by the typical Ted talk of theatrics and smoke and mirrors like a bad Toastmaster speech contest. Offer knowledge/value, not drama.
I had a stroke when I was just 15 years old. I was in the hospital, then in in-patient rehab. I then was in out-patient rehab until I graduated in January, 2015. I'm 24 now and I'm feeling stronger every day.
My aunt who was 23, recently died from a stroke during weight lifting, she was immediately raced to the hospital, but they said that she was not responding properly, they had tubes connected to her to keep her breathing and her brain was not functioning right. Whats crazy is that when the doctors told us that she had to be shut down by the machine which means left to die, tears ran down her face, but still they wanted her to gone, because she was so young at the time, her organs could be donated and save someone else’s life, so they did so. Till this day I feel like there was more to that tear that went running down her face. Rip auntie I miss you :(
That's why these videos HAVE to get out everywhere. Healthcare is a joke, i was 27 so they assumed it was something else and screwed around between different doctors and hospitals until it was too late, now I've lived as long, disabled, and think of it daily. Take your health knowledge seriously, I was fit, active, healthy, no drugs, and no meds and...
I had a stroke at 16 (ischemic) after I had brain surgery to remove part of a tumor on my optic nerves. I wasn’t able to get the medicine fast enough; so now I’m permanently disabled on my left side. (Weakness & delay)
Cj H good luck man, I just had a brain tumor removed and I’ve had three violent seizures all of which stopped my left side from having any control shortly afterwards, we can get through this together buddy. Survivors :)
The idea of having a stroke out of nowhere is one of the scariest things, I was on edge during the whole video just thinking about it.
it is, but i would rather live my life normally than constantly be scared of it.

I wish I knew this video earlier, my favorite aunt could still be here with me. Very informative, I hope there will be lives that will be saved through this video.
Same here my mom died last year a few days after getting that.
I was already experienced that scenario from my little sister when she is in 2nd grade junior high school.. it was terrible memories.. imagine 14/15 years old child got stroke!! It can be anyone.. no matter how young or old you are.. So stay healthy!
Bagus Prasetyo best wishes for you and your sister.
I had one myself at age 32. If I had a dollar for every time someone said "...but you're so young!"
Now that's scary O_O
Plus, even scarier if you're Vicky Prasetyo
But, even more and more scarier if you're going to sing _Twenty-Nine My Age Ya_
lol
18 at the time no one wanted to take me to the hospital thought I was just anxious again.
Stroke in young is rare and unusual. Should get it checked
Thanks for the great lecture!
I’m first to like ur comment I swear
History Vs. Robiespierre.
The Science Biome these are my favourite animated videos on TH-cam 🤩
A wonderful lesson and even more wonderful animation :D
1:45-1:51 wow
My grandma recently passed due to an Ischemic stroke I think… So thats how it happened… My hearts goes out to everyone who lost a loved one due to a stroke
My grandmother recently had a stroke. I really appreciate this video because it helped me understand what happened. Thank you!
My great grandmother is recovering from a stroke so this is very relevant
LagiNaLangAko23 she’s doing much better now, unfortunately I don’t know of any instruments she could play, as her arthritis is also quite painful
This is an exact defination of ischemic stroke very elaborate and precise .
However it lacks detail on the clotting cascade so it's not that extensive
My grand mom hd a stroke on 20 feb 2019, its been almst a year now. We took hr to hospital within an hour they referred to another hospital, operation was done, 1/3 of her skull was cut out... now she is half paralysed... but she can sit and talk a bit... she also had a huge bedsore due to negligence of hospital authority, it took 6 months to cure that sore.. the whole year was toughest time of my life , staying in hospital for 16 hrs daily, n watching her in pain.. i hope that no one go through this phase.
I'm sorry for that. I currently care for my grandmother for that exact reason. I dont trust anyone else will care for her the way she needs.
@@symonesymoneyay690 m also doint the same... mt dad has a younger brother but they just dont care.. can u believe during those daya and till now they throw atleast 4 to 5 parties per month at their home and dont even spend an hr daily to take care of my grandmom... its only me n my mom taking care of her , moring 7 to night 9
Ameen
@@symonesymoneyay690 hey how is ur grandmom now?
@@abdulkaiyum522 she's still hanging on. Been hospitalized a couple of times since last time but she's really good. How's yours
Such great investigators, animators, producers, [...] deserve everything in this world. Thanks!
Dude you scared me....
Don't have a stroke about it
This year, I'm practicing for my Proficiency certificate and I am trying to improve my vocabulary. Your channel is really helping out! Thank you very much for the quality content and keep up the good work!
ThankS, this has helped me understand the stroke I’ve already had! 👍🏼🙂
This video has explain all those “grey anatomy moments” ‼️👍🏻
My friend’s father had a mild stroke last Christmas so this is useful!
Love the classic animation.
Reminds me of schoolhouse rock.
I’m scared that I’ll suddenly have a stroke right now.

Well, i knew this already from my books.. but the animation made a hundred times better
Anyone else do the F.A.S.T test themselves?
Kinda creeped out halfaw through the video i tried it on myself 🤣
I FAST test everytime if:
-My head hurts near the ear or on at the back
-Laugh too much
Me
I got some signs of a stroke so i tried this out
Thanks for this lesson Ted-ed
Half of my brain feels weird now
gingr_bean i agree
My grandma had a stroke when I was younger. I didn’t understand it all then but looking back now, I thank God she’s still here. One of the things I do remember was she lost the ability to speak for a few days. I can’t imagine what life would’ve been like had that been permanent 💔 it’s crazy to see a visual of what was happening.
Your grandma is really blessed.
3:29 I physically cringed and felt my muscles tense up just picturing this
Thanks for sharin it, TED.
My Dad passed away last month after several years suffered from stroke. May peace rest upon him.
Hope for times to come, this will bring more awareness to all.
Thank you 😊
I feel do bad for you and your father🙏🙏🙏
i have a condition that hightens my risk of having a stroke, and when i learned this i panicked because i know nothing about strokes. god bless the internet
When the doctors were operating on the patient i immediately remembered the good doctor 😍😍
I hope u mean the Korean Version of 'The Good Doctor'
because the American version just Killed the Vibe
i didn't watch it unfortunately but the american version was quite fine for me not THE BEST medical series ..
This should be in every company and school
Back in 2012 my father got stroke and lost the control of his right part of his body and ability to speak. He never recovered it and eventually died this this year.
When this stroke was happened weren't aware about this. I wish this video was before happening all of this.
BTW, I really thank you for this kind of video. I think everyone should have have basic knowledge about this sort of things.
Isn’t it lovely lovely lovely
i was looking for this comment but i couldn't find it so,

Today my best friend's father died......Really i never seen him crying this much before...pls pray he'll recover his mental state and gain a new meaning of life💝
that catheter procedure is INCREDIBLE!
Who held up their arms, smiling, while saying 'BALL!'?
3:35 ... What is that ???
I can't imagine that !!
i wish i knew about this earlier, so that i know when my grandfather got one😭
This is a very well-done video. It's short and to the point. It uses both the voice and visual images to impart critical knowledge. Someone did a good job about an important topic.
Excellent informational video. Thank you. (Since he is already in the hospital, perhaps a surgeon can move his nose out of his ear...)??
Imagine having a stroke while watching this video
1:20 If only you could treat head injuries from an arrow like that!
My great grandfather had a stroke and survived but he is not doing well so please pray for him
Will do my grandmother had two of them and lived just not the same. Through rehabilitation they will recover alot although for years my grandma thought it was still the 80s and I was my eldest brother
as a neurologist i found this very interesting and informative
I wish these could be in our courses.
Thanks a lot. Knowledge is power 😊
My aunt is now on 2nd stroke my uncle almost cheated on her and she started stalking the girl everyday, she even didnt sleep and always sleeping like 7am in the morning i feel so bad for my aunt even her son shouting at her for need to buy foods everyday :((
I was watching seriously and suddenly this came 2:53😂
Awesome animation though
My mom was hospitalized after she got 1st stroke. She was able to move normally in a day. She received necessary treatment until she was discharged hospital in 13 days. Then less than 24 hours, she hit by stroke again... She is now suffering from hemiparesis. And doctor said that she will less likely to gain back the normal move. Speed is important when you see 1st sign of a stroke, at same time, recurrence rate is highest at first 2weeks from initial stroke.
I've learnt more from this channel in a few videos than my years at school.
My son had a stroke at 36. Please be in prayer for him

Hey ted ed team I am one of your biggest fans. I like all your videos.Pls reply if seen. Pls keep on uploading such nice stuff....
Truly! As a stroke victor, an Advanced Toastmaster and medical/neural fan, I'm exhausted by the typical Ted talk of theatrics and smoke and mirrors like a bad Toastmaster speech contest. Offer knowledge/value, not drama.
Amazing 👌🏽

I had a stroke when I was just 15 years old. I was in the hospital, then in in-patient rehab. I then was in out-patient rehab until I graduated in January, 2015. I'm 24 now and I'm feeling stronger every day.
Sorry to hear that.

Rip auntie I miss you :(
That's terrible I'm so so sorry
That's why these videos HAVE to get out everywhere. Healthcare is a joke, i was 27 so they assumed it was something else and screwed around between different doctors and hospitals until it was too late, now I've lived as long, disabled, and think of it daily. Take your health knowledge seriously, I was fit, active, healthy, no drugs, and no meds and...
My grandma had a stroke recently and me and mom are having hard time putting her on hospice because we saw my grandma crying while I spoke to her
Why do the characters have huge zits?
Fascinating........
this explanation was so simply educational..thanks for sharing this
Wonderfully explained in a simple fashion and highly enjoyable. It should be shown to everyone!
3:15 *MEGA CLOT*
My great grandmother had one at the age of 98. She was recovering, but then she suddenly passed 😔 that was two years ago
Sorry to hear that.. your great grandmother had a blessing of long life.. my father is 71 and now had a stroke due to meningitis tb
Because of old age.
Besides he lived far beyond life expectancy, both of my grandpas died at 80 and 58.
Noah Antoine Definitely man. Don’t give up. Give it time. You’ll adapt. :)
I'm 19 just had a n ischemic stroke left my left side paralyzed but now I'm walking and doing my best to recover
I had an ischemic stroke exactly a month ago. I am very fortunate. No residual damage. Still recovering, but life has this amazing glow to it now.
My friend had a stroke at school (we are in eigth grade) and the screaming afterwards was enough to scar me for life. I'm so glad she is ok now!
