      Yeah I’m more of a dog person but I do have cat that has waged a campaign over several years to move in with us 😊(was neighbours) not very affectionate bless her but she seems to really want to be with us so she gets all the pets she’ll tolerate!
      I do think it’s possible to keep cats reaponsibly and not just by keeping them as 100% house cats but sadly there’s very limited ways that feral cats on larger scale can be managed non fatally 😢

The US needs to start removing feral cats and get strict we have less and less native birds and more European starlings and sparrows... its sad. Barn cats need to be not a thing ... we should encourage snakes mink owls hawks and other natural predators to live near these places. Cats deserve homes food love and vet care... they shouldn't be starving and sick in the wild.

    I'm afraid that the message is very slow to get through in New Zealand. We have one of the highest rates of cat ownership per capita and I get tired of hearing that 'they are only doing what's natural. And that it's unkind and unnatural to confine them. I personally love cats and can never resist saying hi to one that I meet on the road, while thinking how terrible it is that this animal is wandering around killing our wildlife - and as you say, more than 'just' our birds. I would never own a cat here, much as I would really like to have one.

    Let's get two things straight here. First,not every pet cat hunts. I have owned dozens of cats over the past 50 years and on average each one catches a few black rats and maybe one or two birds each year. My garden is full is destructive possum pests,lizards,frogs,birds,even bandicoots sometimes. All ignored by my cats. Second,the real problem is habitat destruction caused mostly by livestock farming. So all those who are obsessed with what cats,foxes etc are doing should also give up eating beef and lamb or wearing wool. If that's too hard then you are just hypocrites.

    • @Batangbaito
      @Batangbaito 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Lets get two things straight here. The pet cats aren't just the problem, feral cats exist too and hunting other animals is how they get most of their meals. The problem is that there are tens of thousands of stray cats (plus the pet cats who are free to roam outside) and even if they hunt an average of a few rodents and maybe one to two birds each year, if you add them all up, it's still a large amount of animals killed and can seriously mess up an ecosystem in a relatively short amount of time, especially in Island ecosystems where native species are more vulnerable to extinction. Second, both are real problems. The fact that cats have caused and are responsible for the extinction of numerous species of animals are enough reason for them to be considered a problem. Livestock farming and cats are both contributors to the extinction of native wildlife, and even if stopped all livestock farming for the next 100 years, cats will still be hunting animals to extinction. Its like two people beating you up, just because the one punching you in the stomach hurts more doesn't mean that the other one kicking you in the face isn't doing any damage.
      Edit: MILLIONS! There are millions of feral cats in Australia alone!

    • @user-sq1np3jj4h
      @user-sq1np3jj4h 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Batangbaito I agree with what you say about enclosed ecosystems such as islands,but as for the rest,why do people think that Australia was some of predator-free paradise before cats arrived? Small animals and birds are natural prey,they breed fast and die fast and before cats they were eaten by Aborigines,snakes,birds of prey,lizards,dingoes,quolls and numerous others. Basically if cats and foxes are wiping out so many species,how come the cats and foxes aren't all starving to death? The average country driver would also run over and kill more native animals in a year than the average pet cat does.

    • @Batangbaito
      @Batangbaito 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@user-sq1np3jj4h Why aren't cats and foxes starving to death? Easy! They live in close proximity to humans. Cats and foxes will readily consume discarded food in trashcans, and in some cases, people will leave their leftover food outside for stray cats to eat, this however won't stop either of the two from hunting native wildlife, as I assume you would know as someone who has owned a dozen cats over the past 50 years, a cat with a full stomach would still happily chase, claw, and bite a cat wand, y'know, a toy meant to simulate small prey. The difference between Cats and Australia's natural predators is that cats and foxes need to hunt and consume more prey. Snakes and monitors lizards only need to eat 1-2 times a week, with some snakes going even less, cats and foxes need to eat multiple prey a day, not to mention that foxes and cats also hunt and eat birds of prey and quolls. And again, pet cats aren't the biggest problem, the feral ones are. A pet cat who has lived its entire life inside a house would kill 0 native animals, but a feral cat who can roam the wilderness and produce more feral cats will kill A LOT more.

    • @user-sq1np3jj4h
      @user-sq1np3jj4h 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Batangbaito Well yes mostly true,but if we are talking about feral cats then they usually have zero contact with humans so I still ask why they are not starving to death? We should not forget that both cats and foxes consume huge numbers of rats,mice and rabbits which in many areas would be their main diet. In fact most cat and fox hunters do their shooting on farms due to gun licence requirements where the main prey would absolutely be non-natives. We should also remember that urban areas are completely changed from pre-1788 conditions. My own garden is full of possums,birds including brush turkeys,even bandicoots at times (all ignored by the cats) and none of them would be here except for the abundant new foods,shelter,water etc which did not exist when the land was natural scrub.

    • @Batangbaito
      @Batangbaito 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@user-sq1np3jj4h Its simple, countries like Australia and New Zealand are more biodiverse, due to their climate and geography many species have evolved and diversified throughout the islands. Even with no human contact, cats and foxes are just too good at being hunters that small animals there who had no prior contact to these predators have no defense against them. Feral cats and foxes don't starve to death cause essentially every native animal they come by is an easy meal, possums can't outrun cats, cats can easily stalk birds and raid their nests and chicks, foxes can kill quolls and wombats, etc... Cats and foxes don't know these creatures are endangered and frankly, they don't care, to them they are all just food, easy pickings. A cat can wipe out an entire species of marsupial and it would just hunt, kill, and eat another species. We should also not forget that mice, rabbits, and rats are harder for cats and foxes to hunt and kill. Mice can sneak inside our houses, sheds and barns away from any feral cat or fox, rats can live in sewers and drains, rabbits have sharp claws and teeth and can easily outrun cats and foxes. These predators go for the natives because they are easier to hunt and kill, and we can't expect cats and foxes to just hunt rats, mice, and rabbits, we can't argue with these animals and say that they are devistating the ecosystem, and that they should only be hunting these 3 prey animals. I live in an urban area too with feral cats, I had cats squeeze through our house gates and kill our chickens, I have witnessed cats kill skinks living beside our local creek, I had to chase cats away from bird feeders cause they were stalking the birds there. Admit it or not, cats and foxes do more harm than good to ecosystems that they are not a part of. The fact is that cats and foxes have killed dozens of animals to extinction and none of them would have been extinct if we didn't introduce them to that area in the first place.

    thank you for talking about this. I also know that even tho cats can be a problem it is still not their fault and I'm glad that you're always reminding people that introduced species are not evil. People also need to remember that eventually an introduced species will integrate into the food web of a new environment and the native species will adapt to introduced species while said introduce species will eventually evolve into a new separate species. Sure it normally takes millions of years but, that's not always the case. Something it takes just a couple of generations. Which is why I think the best way to deal with the problem is to keep native species around long enough for them to adapt to the introduced species so that way they can both coexist with each other without any or at least minimal negative side effects. In Australia some scientists are already doing this by teaching Bilbies, wallabies, and bandicoots to avoid cats better in controlled areas and it seems to be working. They reason why they're doing this is because they know that they will never get rid of cats completely so the only other alternative is teach the natives to adapt to the foreign species and think that's a way better strategy than to kill off introduced species completely.

      Same here. I also have a large cat run that my cats access by doggie door anytime they want. During the summer, they do stay outside all day. Their choice. When I'm housecleaning, I put the plastic piece in the dog door that prevents the cats from coming in till I'm done. My cat run is 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 7 feet tall. Also has a door that lets people enter as well. It has grass and catnip growing in there. It has a roof and movable shade panels as well. We planned it out well before we built it. (Jan Griffiths).

    In Ecuador, where I live there is a small population of cute green iguanas. Each year they have MANY babies, and thankfully there are only like 4 cats in the entire block. The cats are controlled, and I like to scare them away from the baby iguanas, however cats aren't the problem. BIRDS. BIRDS ARE THE PROBLEM. You talk about cats but not birds. If anything, birds are bigger of a threat to lizards than cats are. The birds here are black with a brown belly and a very shart, long beak. They will mostly hunt baby cats, but they ABSOLUTELY ANNIHALATE baby iguanas.The will kill baby iguanas for SPORT. They will eat like half of it and then not even finish the iguana. IT'S SUCH A WASTE, THERE ARE LIKE 6 BABY IGUANA CORPSES IN MY YARD AS I SPEAK, infact, these birds kill so many iguanas, (snakes kill them too) that last year NO IGUANAS MADE IT TO ADULTHOOD. NOTHING, 0, I CHECKED. This year I have to physically intervene by interrupting the bird hunts and putting any iguanas that I find inside of a well-lit, plant infested shed where the babies can spend their childhood. Please make a vid about birds, because this is just too insane.
