Could have saved your self lots of cash going Chinese cdi and coil. I spent 17 bucks on mine for my trx250 fourtrax. Green gounds white/blue pulse generator or trigger. Red/black 12v in, yellow black to the hot for the coil. There is no rectifier so you would only need a 4pin dc. Tor future projects try it. I've seen the chinese single cdi run a yamaha big bear 650 with no issue. There not gonna last as long as the stock for sure. But when you can pick a new cdi up for 8 bucks it's worth it.
my sons and I had toKDX 200s and an RM 125 from the 1980s. We put them in the garage in 2010. I was in a car accident and we never rode them again. In 2018 I decided to sell the bikes. I had completely drained the carburetors and gas tanks as usual when I put them in the garage. When I went to sell them, I mixed 1 gallon of premixed gas/oil as usual. I put gas in the gas tanks, air in the tires. Each bike started within 15 seconds. if you put a bike in storage, or a lawnmower, snowblower, leaf blower, Weedwhacker, always drain the gas tank and run the carburetor out of gas. If you do that, it will start when you need it when you put fresh gas in it.. also: draining the fuel tanks on off-road vehicles with plastic gas tanks, prevents the gas tanks from discoloring, and making the stick on decals fall off. The fuel tank will remain the same color as the rest of the plastic if you don’t leave the bike sit long-term with fuel in the tank. On the other hand.. if you have a motorcycle, lawnmower, anything with a metal fuel tank, it’s best to completely fill those all the way up so that you don’t have exposed metal in the fuel tank that will rust when it is exposed to condensation..In that case, make sure you have the petcock turned to the off position. And if it is a leaking petcock, get a piece of gas line at least 3 feet long. Paul the gas line to the carburetors off of the fuel tank petcock. Install the 3 foot long piece of fuel line to the petcock, and put the other end up high somewhere above the gas cap so that if the petcock leaks into the fuel line, it won’t fill the carburetor float bowls, it will just stay in that fuel line.. I have had dozens and dozens of motorcycles. Many of the motorcycles I have had, I bought as non-running orphans. The most difficult part of the resurrection was cleaning the carburetor’s that had fuel left in them and getting the rust out of a fuel tank that was made of metal and was empty. The way I get rust out of the fuel tank is, I put about 5 pounds of screws, washers, bolts, nuts, just make sure they are magnetic so you can get them out with a magnet wand. Put them in the fuel tank after you remove the petcock, and put a quart of kerosene in the tank with the screws & other things , then start rocking that fuel tank in all positions to scrape all that rust and scale inside the tank loose, and it will be mixed with the kerosene and it will flush out. It may take you a few days, but you should be able to get it clean ...
I've been dragging home "vintage" iron for two decades or more. The absolute best thing I've ever found for carb cleaner is straight Pine-Sol in the ultrasonic. It's really good stuff. Great content!
That awesome to know. So. Straight 100% pine sol right put of the bottle, no water, used for the bsth in the ultrasonic. Do you rinse in water after? Or does it not need it?
@@sevenmilewhite1407 100% pile sol. Works alone, but works better in the ultrasonic. I don't rinse usually. Just blow out with air and reassemble. Been doing it this way since the 80's
I've got the best carb cleaner of all time. Two cups of white vinegar, two tablespoons of Dawn dish soap, one can of Coke. Mix them in a gallon of warm water and soak the carb and parts for an hour. Blast them with air and you're done!
🌟I got to give you props,:for bringing back them old beast from the dead (respect) I got tired of finding rare parts is a task all in it self 🙌🏍 Salute 🎄Happy Holidays & safe travels !!!🥂
Awesome, you should stow her in the back of the garage and restore her with genuine parts, the price is only heading one direction on these old classics and that's straight UP 😄
The older bikes are just way cooler than any new bike.they don't call this bike the red rocket for nothing!.keep finding these older bikes.they all deserve a new life! Honda will never build another 2 stroke!!!
If you squirt a bit of gas in the plug hole, then put the plug in, then kick it over, you can make sure it fires up before you start messing with the carb or the throttle cable etc... It's a process. Makes life easier... 😀👍
That overflow tube can be drilled out. Use a drill bit and a handle for a thread tap and do it by hand, slowly. Then a brass tube from a hobby shop can be cut and installed. Might have to use very fine emery paper to reduce the outside diameter of the tube where it presses into the float bowl. Had to do a similar thing myself.
Love the channel. Watching your repairs is very calming, seemingly despite calamity all around, life is still good in middle America. Don't forget your PPE, gloves, safety glasses, and a face mask
The reason these are so rare is back in the day you could not change the connecting rod or rod bearings you had to buy the entire crank assembly, it’s probably different today but back then you just junked the engine
Never heard such bs lol who would scrap an engine because of a bad big end bearing on the crank..., we indeed rebuilt engines back in the 70s including splitting cranks to replace big end bearings on multiple machines including hondas..not sure where you got that from..? Did you have trouble finding a rod for your cr back in the day?
I hated mine for the left side kick! I could sit on the seat and start it sometimes, but mostly kicked off the bike. I would leave it running alot on the trail just so I didn't have to start it again! I was 16 and about 5'6'' though. Got a 390 Husky the next year and it made starting this look like a breeze!
Tip. On air cooled 2 stroke motocross bikes, we always ran them with no idle. If you've even experienced a 2 stroke running away, high rpm during a race, you'll understand why lol. They can develop hot spots that will make the engine run wild even when the spark plug cap has been yanked off in desperation. I'm sure some of your viewers can share some stories with you about it. Can be terrifying.
It's alive....and she's a smoky girl. How wonderful is the internet where you can search for exactly what you are looking for and more times than not find it! The CDI, thanks to the net, is in your hand in a matter of days. Awesome sauce!
Congratulations on getting that started Hooray! I like the old air cooled bikes they are from when I was a teenager in the 70s I know its a 1980 though. I like it. I think it may need a new piston it sounds like a piston slap or rod knock maybe that is why it smokes too much. I couldn't hear it after it ran a while though? Just buy some new modern shocks they will work better. You make me want to buy and fix up another bike. My last one was Honda 100 and before that a 125 water cooled Yamaha. so expensive LOL. It didn't run well I know now it needed to be leaned out from watching your videos. Wish I had them back should have kept them. Sold them for school was not worth it.
You should get you and impact screw driver with all the work you do on bikes, would be a big help especially for case screws and things like that! Also, that one funky reed might be blowing back through the carb, new reeds would probably do a lot. Keep up the good videos! Glad you finally got her to fire
On these old bikes after you know you have gas to the carb take a rag sprayed with starting fluid and put it on the air filter and it will prime everything in a sense. It is easier and works better than putting gas in the cylinder
The change from drums and air cooling to brake fluid and radiators does seem to have added a lot of corrosion problems. And when will they think of an auto fuel cutoff device to keep carburators from clogging. Even an automatic float bowl drain. Don't know if it works or not but I would always tap the carb float bowl with a screwdriver handle on reassembly. Just to make sure they didn't stick. Worked once so I kept on doing it. First ride was on a Honda XL 175 or so..

your so lucky if i’d have hot that throttle with a hammer it would have snapped! think you still have a way to go with this, sounds like rust around the crank possibly definitely a metallic noise coming from bottom end, but you gotta love that air cooled ping that is amplified when there are no dampers in between the fins
