You are a good guy Joe. You don’t get too pissed when you get lied too. But in reality you are doing the resale community a service by getting these bikes off the market and a chance to run again. I hope these sellers find your TH-cam channel.
awesome channel eh? seems like a good guy, been watchung his channel for years now, among others
As soon as I saw those stupid Walmart decals/stickers on this unit, I knew it wasn't gonna run....lol
The skulls and monkey made me think of a 12 year old owner
''Born to lose'' 😂😂😂
Ride or die 🤣
Compression……check! 🤣 I thought it was locked up for a second!
its a pain to start one you gotta push decom valve lever on handle bar start to kick it slowly up past top dead centre then push decom lever again and kick it to try to start it . , then repeat when it don''t start . got one in the shed for my son but it such a powerfull nice bike to ride good on gravel not so much bik hills climbs as its heavy ,
It's halfway locked up
I always am waiting for a new video. I love watching the process. That it takes to get the bikes running. You do a damn good through job explaining everything
All the holes that someone drilled in the front fender make me think this bike was getting hot and they wanted to increase air flow to the radiator. Always great to watch your forensics on a machine.
I knew I wasn’t the only one who noticed those holes
Custom holes
A real mechanic at work here
2vintage your doing a great job man. Im restoring my 426. She was rotting away in the shed. Your hard work has brought inspiration into my life again. thx brother.
Happy sunday Joe! We need a Vinnie Special episode someday
It's not in bad shape for its year 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Ever thought about getting a spark checker probably would help the frustration level. I have one that is at least 50 years old and don't use it very often when I do it's worth having.
Wow, good looking cycle. Good diagnosis. Keep up the hard work
The valves are hitting the piston. You can clearly see it on 3
Valves and the piston.
42:48 Pause it here and explain what you're seeing that I'm not. I'm not trolling, just new to working on fourstrokes and genuinely want to know. ty
Go to 42:52 for a better visual@@travismccloskey9733 you can see the marks on the piston.
@@travismccloskey9733 i see impact impressions on the piston and the same polished sections on the valves. Seen it many times.
I think ur right theyre just making contact
@kamn1 yea and that's why he thought it had more compression than it did
Those 2 outside intake valves are hitting the piston making it feel like it has more compression than it does.
I was thinking the same thing as soon as he kicked it the very first time. The way it acted like it was locking up i think valves are hitting the piston!
If that were true, they would be bent and not seating. Also, he would see marks on the valves and piston where contact is made. He inspected all that and it looked fine. Also, he checked the timing and it was nuts on. So why would that happen?
There are marks on the piston where the valves have hit.
@@drott150my last name is drott also. Blew me away finding you. Are you from WI?
@@jmj267 No, I owned a 1960s Drott IH loader with a 4-1 bucket on it. If you are a Drott in WI, I suspect you are related to the Drott family that created the patented Drott loader systems used on IH and other loaders while they still had their very valuable patent. I used to collect old Drott advertisements and brochures with John Drott pictured with the machines, usually with a super cool shark's mouth painted on the bucket. Does any of this ring a bell?
The valves are hitting the piston. Can see it on the valves and piston.
Right! I was thinking the same thing!
Two outer intake valves look to have been hitting the piston, so my guess is bent valves. Good work though, very methodical approach. 👍🏻
Thats was the first image that hit me as he took the head off, the marks are very clear, the outer intake valves, kissed the piston...
@@zambuko believe those are the valve reliefs that are fly cut into piston. The timing was bang on so no issue with valve timing being out
I love your assistant, he's very enthusiastic.
If I found out the previous owner lied like this one did I'd be pissed off. Man, Joe, you sure do have patience with people. Every video is like a tutorial. Love this channel.
It happens all the damn time unfortunately. Most of the time sellers make assumptions of what is wrong with them and doesn't actually know. Other times they blatantly lie to your face because they want to get as much money as they can out of there busted POS. Only way I'll buy something that is not running is if it's very cheap or if I know what is wrong with it by experience.
if anyone should buy those bike its joe , hes saving regular folk getting shafted
It happens when you guy a used bike. I recently bought a Polaris sportsman 800 and come to find out it needs a new crank
Yep, Joe's good natured and forgiving. I'd be pissed too, but it's good to see others able to take things in stride.
Seems like he's just dumb as a brick. Everything he buys the dude says previous owner did this and that and it's never true.
Love your videos! with the amount of metal you found in the oil filter, please pull off the clutch side you know that debris is in the lower case. The threads on the crankshaft looks smoked. You might want to verify that you can fix that before investing any more money on the build.
I have been watching your videos for a little over a year and I have noticed that sellers lie about the condition of motorcycles much more than here in Finland. I have been buying and selling several bikes a year for 20 years and only one major scam has happened to me. Keep up these great videos dude!
It's the American way it's how we treat each other Americans are so entitled they don't have to disclose anything that may potentially affect the sale.
The social contract has been broken. Strong men produced good times good times produced week men week men produced bad times. I've noticed the same thing on this channel the blatant dishonesty. But bad times can produce strong men. Have faith in the American spirit my Finish friend.
I told one guy I was buying a car from that if I found out there was something wrong with it that he didn't tell me up front I was going to drive it through his house. He fessed up real quick
It's not everyone though. It's poor people that are out to make a buck. Dont go after "deals" and theres nothing to be concerned with.
USA is definitely scammy as f. People want to line their pockets as much as possible and will tell you whatever they need to to make the most money. I dont trust anyone here. Prove it or it's false is how I go about things.
the intake valves are touching the piston. you can see the rub marks. check the cam sprocket hasnt moved on the camshaft. when the engine is timed, look at the lobes on the opposite side to the chain and theres holes which you can use to check they line up with the head evenly.
I'm glad you did a full wiring inspection and tested continuity. I was troubleshooting a 60KW generator that wouldn't stay running and found a wire that looked fine on the outside but was completely severed inside. That wire was one of 20 in a massive harness and I have no idea how it happened. Wiring can seem really complex but if you isolate and test for continuity, resistance, or shorting to ground it's actually quite easy to diagnose issues. Nice work!
That's a monster generator! Is it diesel? Military? 😮
That makes sense if it’s running one minute then shuts off. That’s like my Rv the frig was working. Then the generator turn off. So I switched the frig to gas and the generator stays running. So there is a short on the frig that I need to fix
@@MiBurnout Yes, MEP 806A, I was an electrical repair specialist in the Marine Corps.
Was thinking the same thing. My own experience buying an early 70s Cadillac around 1995, would not start seemingly whenever a cloud was in the sky. One night dad opened the hood and sprayed Windex, cracked dried spark plug wires lite up like a Christmas tree
Internally pulled wires can cause massively evasive gremlins. Sometimes they conduct, sometimes they're open. They appear perfectly intact and ok on the outside. Buells had a serious problem with this in the wiring loom close to their headstock. Many a wasted hour trying to track down strange problems that defied consistent detection.
Wonderful video Joe - I just posted on Facebook me racing my 98 yzf400 in 98 lol - everyone thought I was crazy to race one loln- not so funny when I whipped their you know what 🏁 really good bikes but expensive to fix- must admit for 99 I went to a KX500 and did even better- I am waiting for my 24 Beta 300 RX - suppose to be here this week 😀 Thanks for your great work Joe ❤
Been watching your videos for a few months now and you have re-lit the fire under my ass to maybe start rebuilding these old dirt bikes again! I wish I had found your videos years ago when I was doing this sort of thing as they would have helped tremendously when I ran into an issue I couldn't figure out! What's truly amazing in your videos is how you keep so calm and not throw around various expletives when things don't go right! 🙂 Keep up the good work! Find a 83 YZ125 to rebuild! Would love to see that!
I'd be worried about the bluing on the crank around the rod journal, it looks like the bottom rid bearing got really hot so that bearing may be shot and causing the engine to turn over hard, not the compression
i would def be replacing the crank bearings
That's what I thought also. Good comment. Hopefully he listens
If they ran it low on oil those needle bearings would have starved first and super heated, which probably would explain the metal in the oil filter
Didn't you notice the pile of metal in the oil filter cavity😂
the end of crank is stripped bad it looks to me, if it was my bike it would get a new crankshaft
Doesn’t make sense that it was hard to turn over with 80 psi. That crank looks like it got hot to me. I think I would take a closer look at the bottom end before proceeding any further. That metal had to come from somewhere.
Crank pin got pretty darn hot by the looks of the blueing on the counter weights. I wouldn't be surprised if it has rod knock after it warms up.
This. Also, check the threads for the flywheel nut. They look stripped.
Yep, I saw that too bro, thought it got way too hot at the crankpin 🔥
Pretty sure those marks are there from the factory. My YZ has these same marks.
If it overheated that bad, there would be massive amounts of vertical play in the crank pin and it would make an audible knock as it was turned over. Instead, there is zero play and it moves freely. The discoloration is factory heat treating.
Those blue marks are from when the crank was assembled. Perfectly normal
Sure looks like the valves have touched the piston. Might want to make sure the valves are not bent
First kick my anxiety went up because that's how my 426f kicked when the bottom end went out. It literally welded the bearing and rod to the crank pin. 3k later it sits in the shop because thise parts aren't cheap. Great video man, nothing wrong with a thorough inspection
As someone who owns the 1999 yz400 and has built it from the ground up, replacing everything it has ever needed, I can say that you should be able to stand on the kicker and not have it move at all. That’s why there is a manual decompression lever on these machines. Check to make sure the lever isn’t too tight or getting pinched causing that valve to stay open and loose compression. I had it happen to me where I replaced the clutch cable and my routing was bad so it was making the decompression lever open when the bars were turned to the left, causing the bike to shut off.
I got the same bike for 1200 with everything working perfectly, I bought it thinking it had super tight valves but over time I learned it was just a fucking brick to kick lol, had to search over TH-cam on how to use the lever. Amazing bombproof bike.
Yea but did you see the valve marks on the piston?
I owned one of these. Same year. Absolutely loved it. Even rode motocross with it. Had the YZ plastic and tank for it. Put about 5,000 miles on it. Update: not 50 HP, 36 HP on the dyno.
Glad to see a young man with ambition. All the best to you and your family.
It's all
It's also nice to watch someone who is faith based with traditional values!
I don’t know how you don’t have 2 million subs. Love your vids keep it up.
maybe, many viewers are like me and haven't subscribed. I have to many sub's. Though I make sue I hit the like button every time.
Why did the motor kick over so hard while compression was low? Crank bearings seized? Check this now with piston out. With all those metal chips near filter you should pull the motor and go through lower end.
Check out the blue heat marks on that crank!😮
I own a 2000 WR400, great bikes when looked after. Regular oil changes, cam chain checks etc. Decompression lever is a god send. There is a right nack to starting these. Mine kicks first or second now I've got the hang off it 👌. Great video, enjoyed watching all the way from the UK 👍
I have this same bike.. love that you are taking it apart! Can't wait for more videos of it!
I had this bike. Loved it!
You have to learn how to use this manual decomposition. 1. Push the kickstart until you reach compression. 2. Pull decomposition lever. 3. Push the kickstart about 1 1/2 -2 inches to get past the compression stroke. 4. Let go of the decomposition lever. 5. Let the kickstart come right up to top. 6. Kick!! You have to go threw this every kick. My YZ 426 was the exact same. Once you figure out the starting procedure on these bike it gets pretty easy. It took me a month of riding to get used to it.
Decomposition is something rotting, the word you're looking for is Decompression 😮
Spellcheck. Lol. I didn’t even realize
@@ianmangham4570 Decomposition is my ex😅😊😂
@@chrishubbs8633No that would be "realise"? 😉👍
@@alanrichardson1672both spellings are correct
Once you learn the decompression lever method, they start 1 kick assuming its jetted properly and valves are in spec etc..
It is a pleasure watching your videos i have learned so much. Please keep posting!
my favourite yt channel these days, whats better than vintage bikes and repairing them? thats right, nothing fan from the u k
Dude said im just gonna hold it😂 when i was a kid my dad bought a pull start 3 wheeler, maybe 50cc, and he told me to hold the spark plug while he pulled it, it shocked the shit out of me, so naturally i got every kid that came over to ride to hold the spark plug while i started it, thanks for the video
intake valves looks hit by piston you can see the marks on the piston and valves maybe liitle bent valves thats why low compression
Hey Joe... hopefully you read these comments...you have a really good group of subscribers...I've been asking to do a fleet update and let us know what your keeping and selling possibly...I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be interested...keep up the great vids brother 👍👍
I like watching your videos on quods and bikes you do a very good commentary and explain the problems I do not know it seems you have permanent snow where you live, keep showing the videos an avid watcher.
I hope you figure it out love seeing these older yamahas getting fixed up
That dog loves his dad 👨 🐕 👍
LOL, !! your dog.."drug dog" haha...
we love your videos..don't stop brother.

Those crank threads are spanked it was double nutted for a reason someone stripped the crank threads. Typically it is a crank replacement then because you won't get the proper torque settings causing the possibility that you could shear the flywheel key or worse damage the cases because of failure on the threads...
You do a great job you definitely know what you are doing keep the videos coming and thanks!!!
Nice, love the vids 👍 and it sucks how there was metal flakes
After nearly 30 years and thousands of rebuilds on all sorts of engines, including these, I can honestly say I don't remember ever knackering up crank threads like that. I'm flawed in a million ways but some folks just need to put the tools down man. Of all the threads on anything, those are the ones you don't mess up! I just wonder if you might possibly find some bent valves from someone kicking it over with the timing off. They look okay, but they might be bent some, hope not. Enjoyed the video man.
Vinny knew from the start there was something not right 🤣
44:40 crank overheated...😮
normal from when crank was assembled at factory
Looked like some localized high heat at the crankshaft at the pin.
Love the videos! Keep them coming!! I’ve learned so much from your videos. I even recognized the “cam chain tensioner” before you said what it was…lol😂. Do you resell your stuff? If so, where can someone find your rebuilds?
Great bike to do a super Moto conversion on. The early WR 400s came with small rear axle bearings. That made it hard to find a rear street wheel. Putting a later year swing arm, rear brake carrier, and axle allows you to have greater access to super Moto Street Wheel conversion kits. They used to be a company that made higher powered stators to supply the higher electrical demand a street conversion needs. You definitely have to add a battery behind the headlight to help with the turn signals and the horn. The tail lights already wired for a brake light, and you just have to put a pressure switch into the rear brake banjo bolt on the master cylinder. Whatever you do, don’t give it too much gas when trying to start, just pull the choke. There used to be a mod to the throttle position sensor where you would pull one wire out of the connector but I’m not sure which one.
Great Chanel great build😊
I wish people would learn that if you don’t know anything about wiring…..then don’t mess with the wiring. There’s nothing worse than trying to fix something that other people have already took random guesses at how to fix by cutting and splicing wires. Wiring isn’t that complicated, everything can be tested.
Nice, very easy bikes to work on. Very reliable. My 01 426 shreds
Nice good job love watching you work on these bikes. 😮
definately be taking a harder look at the crank bearing with all that blueing round the crank pin, cant be normal.. won't the crank need to come out to re tap the thread on end of crank?
I think Vinny just likes the spring time and his new hair cut.. Love the channel..
It's probably something easy!
Hey just watched this video, love your content! I have a 99 Yz400 and I put a new piston in mine when I went through it over ten years ago. There is a sequence I had to learn to kick start these bikes otherwise you can kick till your blue in the face. Gotta kick it through with the lever just enough to get it to move and then bring it back up to full compression where the kick start is to the top fully then as you go to kick it just 1/4 on the lever to get it to move then release and kick over. Curious to see how this bike turns out. Good luck bike is lots of fun and pretty good for the power!
Great video’s, did you check to make sure the end of the crank wasn’t bent? I have seen that happen before. I was thinking about how hard it was to kick over and the busted stator, double nut low compression that it would be worth checking. Keep up the great videos.
Vinnie is fired up!
The valves hit the piston gangster
Engine overheating...
@@njb7209 nope
always worth the effort to identify the failure on the stator and see if you can repair/resolder wires?
Your channel is fantastic, it’s a fountain of knowledge, 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think Vinnie is a Yamaha guy
Can't wait to see if you ever find one of the new Triumph 250 x MX bikes to fix.pretty gnarly little speedster.
I'd check the crank bearings, seeing you had a bunch of metal in the oil filter housing.
looked like something maybe cam chain was rubbing stator plate
Lovely bike Joe!💪👍👍👍👌
Thanks for another great video, I look forward to them every morning. I’ve owned a street legal wr400 for years , it’s a wicked bike, if you have to get into the carb there’s a unique square slider that like to crack, there’s a guy in Washington that makes a upgraded version, way cheaper than Yamaha. Cheers from Canada
Can u link me to him? I have carb issues I think but it looks like a beast to work with so I’ve just rode it how it is, only idles have like 10 mins of running lol
Ive got a 2000 yz426f my son and i are redoing .. it was cool to see you wrenching on a similar bike .. We did a 2001 kx 125 and 99 rm 250 already and looking for more lol .
Great video as always
Love all your videos Joe. God bless you and your loved ones 🙏brother
I love these old Yamahas. 1999 YZ400F was my first, had it 10 years, loads of fun! Too bad this WR has been messed up.
always a pleasure to see your videos. it's a shame you don't fixed it yet in this episode. reminds me Son Goku episodes 😂
Lots of people lied lately on these recent videos...sucks for you but keeps the videos entertaining!!
Dig into the stator where the wires connect to the coils, I've seen them broken there before. Also when in doubt, I test from there rather than the wire ends.
Great News! He's going to give away all the bikes he repairs to subscribers! What a guy!
What will you do about the metal shavings potentially in the bottom end?, great video btw
I want to see you start it. I traded mine away in mint condition because it was such a pain to start . The most finicky motor I ever had. They are a fine motorcycle as long as the motor is never turned off.
Vinnie tested, Vinnie approved.
Good work! Sorry you did not get the truth on the background of the bike. If there's anyone that could make good use of a good bike lift, it's you!
I had a 2000 WR400F and i found the best way to start it is not use any throttle, use the decompression lever to get it just barely past TDC. Once its past tdc release decomp lever and kick like hell.
You can make these bike auto decompression with the use of a wr or yz 450 exhaust cam. there is a very specific timing you have to use with them and the cogs on the cam are slightly different but they work and have been proven to work just fine. you can also leave the manual decompression mechanism in place, I deleted mine as I needed room for my fan which I added. These have an AC only lighting system so if you want to run a charging system with an aftermarket rectifier you need to perform the ground float procedure with the stator. I have a little grom battery in my airbox to run my trail tech voyager and lighting system as well as my fan. If you happen to find a 426 cylinder, you can put a 450 piston on these rods not the 426 piston as the wrist pin diameter is smaller on the 426 but these are the same as the 450s.
Just had to comment whilst watching at14.3 minutes in. When reading low Ohm measurements its always good to first stick the probes together to see what the resistance of the probe leads are. That measurement of 0.4 Ohms you measured could be nothing but lead resistance therefore that coil your testing maybe a dead short. But I love your videos. Thanks
Great Video I enjoy your Videos
Thanks
Hi bud awesome content by the way, have you sold any of the bikes quads etc that you have bought in the last year? Stay safe and mostly stay strong!!!
I learned to ride on my brothers KX125, then I bought a 99 WR400, my first bike, rode it for a few years, knew nothing about servicing bikes since I was about 13 or 14 and never tinkered before, the carb jets went crazy one night and opened up to full throttle, I got it home and when I shut it off it never started again and sat for 2 years, at the time I didn’t know it was something as simple as a carb rebuild, sold it for $750 and the guy texted me 2 weeks later saying he got it started. That was a few years ago and I’ll never forgive myself for my negligence and not taking a few hours to just simply try to understand “hey, why is this doing this”😂
You need to tear the motor down, to many bad signs! "Do it right, Do it once's"
Go little cousin Joe go man. You're going to get it once again.
Really enjoying the channel and reliving old dirt bike memories! And wondering why you don't take a closer look at coolant and oil levels, pop the seat, remove the plug, etc. as you look at the bike with the seller. Certainly would provide more opportunity to negotiate in many cases and a better idea of what you have ahead of you in terms of time/effort.
Ol' Joe loves his dirt bikes. 50hp? Wow, not in forever. Hurry up, 2Vinny is anxious to hit the trails
the stripped threads I think might be a problem. That was the end of my Hodaka rat. I didnt know what to do my coulsin gave to me he stripped it out.

Looking forward to this one👍
buying used stuff is a gamble i think --it will be a nice bike with motor is fixed up----great video like always ===
