It's been years since I've worked on a bike, but the way this dude breaks them down piece by piece and explains every step, I just love to watch it. So interesting.
Joe I know you’re going to have a kick starter problem because I seen a washer missing when you pulled the case off you will see the surface of the case you pulled off is shiny it needs a thin washer to go up against the kick starter, When you go to kick that bike over it pushes up against the case and without that little washer the gears will skip. I know this because I spent a few hours trying to fix that issue so look on the parts diagram get that little washer I promise you will be happy i told you this!!
I purchased a 1990 CR250r for $700 that had been sitting in a barn for years, previous owner had it for 18 years. Still have the bike, plan on doing a full restoration
Nice find Joe. Those old Cr's were almost dangerously fast. Hopefully you can whip it back into shape and take it for a rip and maybe race it against your newer one.
That waterpump isnt bad at all those old hondas usually get all messed up from the coolant from sitting because the case is made from magnesium not aluminum
You've come a long way Joe. You're taking the time to diagnose problems instead of just making starting it up your main priority. You never know what's lurking in these mystery motors. Good job. By the way, if that water pump shaft has any slight grooves in it, I'd order that up as well as the seals because an old shaft will just destroy the new pump seals. Have fun.

These old bikes are fun to fix up but can be hard to find parts for. I'm rebuilding a 1986 CR80 right now and getting stuff for it was a bit of a challenge
the reason why its not going into gear is most likely because he tried shifting it with the clutch cover off. if you look in the bottom left corner of the clutch side case you can see the shift shaft come through, you need to pop it back into the right place somehow.
you can add water and put in freezer it will pop dents out i tried it on a steel dirt bike gas tank and worked for me but be careful i had a older cr250 like that one but it had kick stator on left side of bike was weird to kick over great old bikes nice find
That coolent pipe is a common failure because the cases are magnesium. People use the wrong coolant and they rot away. RRC Restorations had a good series on this which just finnished.
I recently saw a race on a track a little well back a 490 yz agenst a old school cr 500 I coulnt.believe my eyes the cr woul let the yz sneak up.on on him.as soon aS he got a little close the cr woud take off on the yz on the back wheel every one was shocked we all thought the yz was twice as fast as the old stock CR guess not this time
Those 85 through 87 Honda CRs were notorious for the water pump case cover corroding because they are made out of magnesium and minerals in the water just destroy them. There's a guy in the UK that makes aluminum ones.
Long time follower here and very happy seeing the dirtbike content back. But I was hit with so many ads it made it tough to watch. Hope you get paid for that!!
Having the same issue on my 1995 Cr250r the kick starter gears are slipping so bad it does not starter easy anymore, Joe the slipping is occurring back behind the mechanism where the ratchet gears are. That is what is slipping, the tips of the teeth get rounded off and causes it to slip

Update that to the 2 piesce clutch cover . Those 85/86/87 CR’s were notorious for Radiator / water pump corrosion. As soon as you added coolant it would almost instantly develop a charge like a battery 🔋 because the metals in the system didn’t like each other . I just want another Matching Suzuki TM for my 1974 250 Racer. Anyone in the Ohio, MI, Indiana, Wis area got one? As Much as I love 2-Stroke. It's just not the same when you got a Radiator in, MonoCrap (Shock), and a plastic tank. I love the Ironman Class Wayyyy too much!

That washer was broken! Weird, never seen one broken like that. Please don't reuse it. I think there was a serious problem and the last guy tried to repair it without splitting the cases. I think you may have to do so to find out what is wrong with the transmission. Might just be pieces of old clutch basket caught between the gears. I'm liking this project more every moment.
Entered my comment before seeing the shifter disengagement. Someone's been in there and had not re assembled things correctly. The spring, the shifter, the washer, and the missing spring and check ball that holds the kick starter in the closed position. Those two missing parts tells me that the bike may have been disassembled for more than a few days and some parts were lost.

You need the new cover and water pump shaft + seal. Any pits and or corrosion in water pump seal area will cause the seal not to seal correctly and coolent will leak into trans oil. Take a close look at that used cover for pitting and corrosion if there is don't buy it . Buy the brand new one. That case is made from magnesium known to corrode and not seal. Flush radiators out. Install new bottom end crank seals. One is on the flywheel side and one is behind that main gear on clutch side . I would not trust old seals. That spark is weak you need to clean the pickup behind the flywheel. And all connections. That carburetor on the bike is a keihin 36mm or 38mm flat side power jet. The one in the parts box is the stock carburetor. The carburetor on the bike is the better carburetor. That spark plug didn't look lean ,it looks newer like someone cleaned it and put it back in. because they couldn't get the bike to run, weak spark. I think someone rebuilt it and couldn't get the bike to run then it sat for years. You should just do a complete restore of the bike ,repaint , rebuild the forks + shocks and new linkage and swingarm bearings . Make it mint the right way
Hey buy a zoom spout bottle on Amazon. They come with sewing machine oil in them.there is a little hose that you pull out of the bottle thats like 6 inches long .great for putting gas in carb
I certiatly do..it has to be old crusty and 2 stroke its even more exhilarating when it comes back to life the 2 stroke kick the blue leaving the tail.pipe watching how fast the tack jumps and the front end lifts fast oh yea baby love my 2 stokes.u dont get none of that with a four stroke no buzz no smell boaringggg
Internal kick start gears are common, my '87 currently sits with such a gear, if you kinda know what your doing, you can re shape the gear back up again with a Dremel tool.
Take a close look at that clutch pressure plate. It looks like it has made contact with the engine cover, but there's no damage to the screws. New screws? If so, what happened? I see there's a new gasket that appears not to have been in use in a running engine for more than an hour or so. The spring was probably re installed incorrectly by the last guy to work on it. It makes me want to know what he was repairing. Curious. I still think you have a great bike for what you paid for it. Especially as you are a competent mechanic and are capable of doing your own work.

Good score!.be a great restoration bike!.
Awesome I have the 84 cr250
Nice!
Once again Joe you got beat how would a kickstart levee internally strip out?🤣🤣outside maybe not inside
Internal kick start gears are common, my '87 currently sits with such a gear, if you kinda know what your doing, you can re shape the gear back up again with a Dremel tool.
There will be a date stamped into the wheel rims mate 🤣👍
I had a 83 I think it was the kickstart was on the left side and chain was on the right. I never saw a bike like that before
love your will it run vids learn alot of tips
Can you start making more 2 stroke videos.
I actually think about purchasing a 2 stroke
Love the content💪
Take a close look at that clutch pressure plate. It looks like it has made contact with the engine cover, but there's no damage to the screws. New screws? If so, what happened? I see there's a new gasket that appears not to have been in use in a running engine for more than an hour or so. The spring was probably re installed incorrectly by the last guy to work on it. It makes me want to know what he was repairing. Curious. I still think you have a great bike for what you paid for it. Especially as you are a competent mechanic and are capable of doing your own work.
Oh dude I want to see that freaking Yamaha 200 2stroke!!! When are you going to make any videos on that one brother? I would love to see that bike be built!
Now we're talkin..nice score!!! Watch TNT on youtube..hes perfectly restored some old hondas to mint condition!!! 😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
