I like Revenge of Shinobi much better. The 2nd game had smoother, less nausiating scrolling, better graphics, much better sound, more interesting levels, etc. This version was a step backward in my opinion, although some of the boss monsters were cool.
Revenge and this game are both damned fine pieces of software. Yuzo Koshiro didn't do this soundtrack, but the person that did doit, did an admirable job. The music seems to go with the levels smoothly.
The 16 bit consoles both had the ability to do parallex scrolling rffortlessly, so it should come as no surprise that you see it often in 16 bit games.
I don’t know if people know this, but this game has a story that could make for a great anime OVA. Here, I’ll explain: 1:16 This is the first level of the game. We start at the hidden village of the protagonist where he fights minions and goons. 4:23 The journey takes him into a hidden cave where he fights a giant mutated warrior. This begs the question: why is he mutated? 5:55 This riddle forces him to leave his hidden ninja village and outside its territory using one of his modes of transportation, his loyal steed. He fights other enemy ninjas along his way. 7:27 This takes him to his first encounter of one of the enemy’s many secret bases of operations, a hidden military facility that hides a lot of secret weapon experiments. 10:09 The boss of this hidden military facility is a weaponized brain. 11:05 This takes him deeper, where he discovers an entire underground facility where they use biological weapons to create genetically mutated monsters and weapons of mass destruction. 15:07 The boss of this facility, I believe, is a monster that was a result of remnants of biological weapon waste and failed mutated monster experiments. I actually felt sorry when I defeated this monster. He just wanted to protect his territory and be left alone. 15:56 This takes the hero to another facility overseas where he uses a really cool mode of transportation, a surfboard (this is one of the coolest levels I played in this game). This is one of the many enemy bases that creates high-tech weapons. 23:11 The protagonist himself sets the forest on fire to destroy this evil secret military base. He even delves inside to plant bombs everywhere. Where the first facility deals with creating mutated soldiers with inhuman experiments, this base deals with creating highly advanced mecha suits and weapons of mass destruction. 31:46 Of course, the place falls apart and this is the part where the hero escapes the falling debris while also fighting a tengu (obviously another genetically modified/mutated soldier). 35:45 This takes him to his enemy’s boss’s final and secret mansion where it’s rigged with traps. And I bet the kabuki soldier was the boss’s right-hand man. The boss himself has fled his base and into his secret battleship in the sky the size of a small city that is equipped with all the weapons he created to terrorize the world and rule it with tyranny. 39:08 Of course, our hero will follow the final boss to the ends of the earth to stop his evil master plan to take over the world. So he destroys the battleship from the outside and the inside. 47:23 We finally meet our final boss of the game. He is not even human. He is some form of a highly advanced super soldier resulting from his own highly advanced alien/mutated experiments to become the ultimate life form. 49:02 Our hero defeats the enemy, saves the world, and looks upon the horizon to the fallen battleship. He rides off into the sunset, back to his home and disappears. Unless evil should rise its ugly head again, he will remain hidden within the shadows, watching.
One of the best speed running 16-bit games and my personal favorite game from the era. The ability to double jump and spread the knives at a 90 degree, angle, the running katana slash with the invincibility frames, the air kick. It's amazing discovering where you can use certain mechanics to kickass better, like being to slash Godzillas face from standing on his hand, and the samurai from stage 1. I wish you didn't cheese the Shadow Master though...because that's an brilliant 16-bit boss fight.
The horse stage is my favorite ♥️ This is an excellent game. Graphics & music 👍 Controls are so easy and precise, it’ll be your fault if an enemy hits you.
I remember when my brother and I first got this game and we heard the music begin on stage 1. It was a wow moment for us. Sadly he is not here with us anymore. I miss him...
God, I forgot how precise you need to be in that final level. Plus, no human enemies. It's just you and the boss, and a labyrinth that ensures you've become shinobi enough to face him. I had so much trouble with this game when I was like 7, but I still love it to this day.
Anytime someone asks me "why Sega over Nintendo?" I just send them a link to this game and they're response is "Holy 💩!" This is Sega at its finest right here, Shinobi 3 has the best music, graphics, presentation, and gameplay ever

The shinobi series holds a spot in my heart no matter what it was the first shinobi that got me to training in real ninjutsu then two made aware of the series world building then 3 came out and just crushed it on the whole setting in round 3 "body weapon" you clearly see that it's no longer the year 19XX but far or shortly into the future and zeed have been up to some very bad stuff, long live the ninja master!!!!
My love for this game began when I watched a friend 1 life this game, couldn't believe he was able to pull it off. Then again he had the game for a little while, enough time to master it. Years later I have my own boxed copy, have not played it in awhile, and never managed to beat it.

On the "traps" level boss you can actually attack him while he's tranformed to the feathers too by striking in the middle wich will make him change form immediately. Also, you don't have to run: just stand in the corner, then when he comes near enough start jumpkickinging him 5-6 times in a row.
