The 1975: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- As lead singer of the youthful Manchester band The 1975, Matthew Healy has cranked out a batch of enjoyably wiry songs, most notably the singles "Chocolate" and "Sex" - each of which has attracted more than a million TH-cam plays. The group has been bubbling up, here and in the U.K., for the last year or two, as it's toured with Muse and released an album and four EPs full of brash-but-winsome, electronics-tinged pop-rock.
So The 1975 knows its way around bigness. But, when asked to strip his band's sound down to fit the intimate confines of the Tiny Desk, Healy didn't hesitate to transform both his songs and himself. Performing solo with a guitar - he even goes fully acoustic for his two hits - he's reborn as an earnest troubadour, while his songs now register as melancholy musings. They're remarkably sturdy in any form, as this bit of left-field sweetness amply demonstrates. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

"Advisory: This video contains explicit language."
"I'm gonna play a song called Sex."
lol
Lol
Aisha Cook i laughed at it actually..
LMAO
My exact reaction three years later XD
sex is not explicit language!
he seems like such a sensitive person, not weak in any way but sensitive. like every song he plays takes him back to a place and time and the emotion shows in his face and voice, it's very beautiful but also in a sad way..
What if hes just super lazy but we all think hes emotional? Lol
I totally agree with this
+Homero trevino I agree to this hahahaha
denise.m idk how but you put what i think about him when he sings in words
Hes weak in everyway
Petition for NPR to have The 1975 do a new tiny desk concert with the whole band in 2020 !
Edit: its been two years, and a pandemic came in the way - but what about now?
i agree w/ u!
Yesss!!! Too Shy would be awesome
Sultan Al-Jarbou omg yes!!
don't think it's possible with all this epidemic thing yk
themarian2 yeah I know but when it settles maybe 🤞
NPR pleeeeeeease we need The 1975 to do a new tiny desk, it's been 9 years and it would be amazing, please

i feel like matty is the type of person who falls in love with random people he sees in the streets like he admires everything about them its a lovely quality to have
I think he even said that in one of his interviews, that he falls in love a lot
does anybody know which interview?
lol that is definitely me
It's a gift & a curse. It's beautiful but can be so painful too. People like that (which I relate to) feel so deeply.
no, she's just not that talented
He's so polite and genuine when he says "thank you" my heart melts a bit
ME I WAS SCREAMING HES SO ADORABLE HES TO SMALL FOR THIS WORLD
ohhhh ella.
omg our displays match
💕💕💕
And thanks for listening omg
He has such sad eyes , but his voice is beautiful
He's got sad eyes in this particular video, but after meeting him his eyes are bright and lovely and full of emotion. What a beautiful human
hes happier now which is good :)
I like the sad eyes bad guys mouth full of white lies kiss me in the corridor but quick to tell me goodbye... I'm sorry I had to...
outerspaceloser my ghost where you go
Micaela benitez brendon Uriel of P!ATD does an acoustic version of girls/girls/boys and he looks really sad in it. Maybe it's just what acoustic versions do to them haha
THE WAY HE SAYS THANK YOU IS LIKE AN OLD BRITISH WOMAN WHO DROPPED HER PURSE BUT U PICKED IT UP FOR HER AND GAVE IT TO HER... "thank you"
Oh my god this is beautifuul
outerspaceloser i love u
yea the way he plays music is like an old british woman as well
@7:00
This isn't The 1975, its just Matty people. Hate it when they forget about the rest of the guys.
+Adam Kagee I was like WAIT!?!??! is it just one guy? lol
Orlando Rodríguez nooo please dont think that haha. their is 4 of them
um read the description
aye although the full band aren't present he's still doing the 1975's tunes. also from bringing in views stand point captioning the vid 'the 1975' is more click bait hence more folk see this awesome set.
Their music nowadays sounds like it was made on a keyboard and not by a BAND. I'm not surprised they don't all travel and play together. I feel like the rest of the guys are slowly being pushed out. Wouldn't be the first time.
I wish this could be an hour longer. I could watch him forever.
same
three braindead broads on an NPR video ?? no way!
Yeah, ik same😍
an hour longer wouldn't be forever XD
agreed 100%
why he always looking like he's about to cry when he performs the acoustic version of Sex
Livie Gee because it's a sad song ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I can only imagine what it feels like with your own song. You close your eyes and you see the molment/person that inspired it. It must be really intense.
Livie Gee cuz she said no, she said no
Livie Gee it genuinely upsets me so much I just wanna hug him
i love how sex can be performed in extremes no middle ground. the soft angelic acoustic and the hellish rip your heart out aggressive rock. iim in love
The version when they were called drive like I do is kinda a middle ground
the rasp in his voice is amazing, just amazing gosh
'fink about how to fink'
+Bianca Naumann 'she's got a boifriend anywai'
+MyKesuke boyfwend
+Bianca Naumann oh be nice to him, he looks nervous and sad
She got a boyfwend henneway!
+Bianca Naumann I can't unhear it :''D
He is my favorite. Period. If I ever become a famous singer, I'm acknowledging Matty in every single interview I have.
Same tho!!
But you won't become one.....
TS1989 please explain to me how your comment was necessary? Just because you told me I won't be.... I have to prove you wrong now. Thank you.
Leekee-Duh-Boo Yesss! What an amazing way to handle a troll! Rise above!
Leekee-Duh-Boo But you won't prove me wrong....that's my point. All you idiots thinking you will become famous....all you want is fame. Self absorbed dumbfucks get nowhere :)
just perfect, he seems to be so shy but confident i don't know..
Get him back on here for the new album
I'm so lost on how this was posted in 2013... but I'm just seeing it for the first time.
Colin Welsh you high?
Found the NPR Tiny Desk Concerts just yet at all. 😥
How lost you are with all the internet bs around to find the gold and how long it takes sometimes.
Same xD
2019
Oh, I'm here and it's nearly 2020. You're lucky not like us 😂
Back for my daily listen
not even going to lie, when he played Woman, I cried. holy.
One of the most heartfelt Tiny Desk "concerts".
Been almost a decade and I still come back to this at least once a week.
I want what this person is smoking.
"Advisory: explicit language"
he said fuck exactly once and it wasn't even fuck he said "fuhh"
he said sex
Sex is considered explicit language? I mean I see how the definition of sex is explicit, but the words its self idk.
suit yourself
sara gonzalez This is npr, obviously they're going to be a bit more sensitive about words like "sex."
I LOVE IT WHEN HE SAYS "CHOCOLATE"
Choclitttttt
smells like choclat.
No. ^
***** Did you actually just say that...
PLEASE we need a new tiny desk with the whole band I'M BEGGIN
But the way he says "chocolate" always makes my heart wanna melt
melt like chocolate
Maryssa Bruman HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHA OMG !!! SO FUNNY !! HHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Choclut
that "thank you" at 7:00 .. seriously, it feels like he's one of the most real and 'down to earth' artists out there. I love all of The 1975's music. It's touching. Impressing. His voice make you stop doing what you do, and just listen to him. I love it.. So much.
"I've only done this like twice sooo, I apologise if I mess it up.. But it'll be alright" hehehe
*clears throat in the middle of the first verse* lol
I found it so funny and sweet. haha
WTF HOW DID I JUST FIND OUT ABOUT THIS MASTERPIECE?
same here dude
cosmodic this has been one of my favourites for years 😊

You have evoked emotions I haven't felt since the 90s.
you mean since 1975? XD

Brooklyn Hoffmann me
Not a big 1975 fan but I loved how much emotion he put into these performances

His voice gives me good shivers , and the emotion in him kills me
!freya.grunge! same, he's breaking my heart.

For what song?
lol
Please tell me you now know the tabs for Chocolate!!!
It's something like this: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/t/the_1975/chocolate_acoustic_tab.htm
Acoustic songs were invented to make you cry.
he's such an angel oh my god
Woman is easily my favorite part of this video.
i like his voice because it's so full of emotion, even if some song lyrics don't convey any emotion in them. in sex, you can hear the heartbreak. i think that's what makes people different, the vulnerability and emotion sets people apart.
OMG YESS YOU PUT IT INTO WORDS PERFECTLY
15 year old me was sitting in her room and crying at the beauty and melancholy of this. 20 year old me is doing the same
For all the people that think Matty has a bad voice look up "Matty Healy Hallelujah" In the video he's about 17 and isn't using the same style of singing he is using for The 1975. I would recommend it!!
the little break in his voice when he says "about sex" just gets me every time, it's not like a rebellion it's just a casualty. sex never felt less taboo.
"Nothing happened, I just fell in love with her a bit."
But isn't that of the most important things that could happen? Falling in love, with anyway it ends? Oh, Matt. Keep doing this. The world needs it, and you. :)
The way he said "don't stop smoking it"
Please bring the 1975 back on tiny desk I’m begging
I need to finish this...just before I go to sleep. I just have to.
please we need an 2024 version
petition for npr to make a new tiny desk for the 1975 🖤
i love how he often sounds so melancholy when he sings and the emotion he puts into everything
Matt's eyebrows remind me super cute puppy i love the way he archs his eyebrows when he sings😍
Haha omg yes so cute
Like a tattooed golden retriever
Working in this office would probably be the best job ever.
fink about how to fink
i was about to comment the same thing lol
Liam McFarland i was just thinking that 😂😂
Scrolled down and read this literally as he sang it.
Ahh he's such cool guy.
Matty's ears kill me, they're so cute, oh my god
Like a bamboo ? :)
+Novalee Law no wtf
+Novalee Law wat xD
I think this is by far my favorite performance from Matty. How he sings, so much emotion. The way his voice trembles. I don't know. He seems like a fragile lad but there's so much more. If that made sense.
we do need another 1975 tiny desk music concert
the way he says thanks is far too nice and cute
You can tell he was singing all year every day when he did this. His voice is going out. but GAWD LORDY HE SOUNDS AMAZING NO MATTER WHAT. I LOVE HOW PASSIONATE HE IS WHEN HE SINGS.
He’s so young here woa
It's 2023 and Im just watching this. My god this man...
i want to hug him, he's so cute
I think you have to appreciate how vulnerable Matty makes himself.. few artists do that, but when you catch one, it sure is fascinating.
Pleaseeeee!!! We need a full band 2023 Tiny Desk Concert!!!
First line of "Sex".
" And this is Harry Styles. "
I'm sorry but that's what I hear in this live version /.\
+PazzerHD ahhahahaahahah!!!!!! i lost it mate tq
Omg I can't unhear this xD
Lemon Ste same now the song wont be the same xD
+PazzerHD "and this is how it starts"
+PazzerHD OMGGGGGGG xD Now i wont ever be able to hear anything else xD
"i've only done this twice" omg omg omg omg
and then the little wink when he says, "it'll be alright"
He puts so much emotion into his singing
we need another tiny desk concert with the whole band!!
been almost 8 years since i first hear this song here, and i always come back once in awhile just to reminiscing those good old vibes from these songs,, hearing it is like also seeing the lads transform from this cute little boys to (now) this big brilliant artist,, no matter how famous they are now, my heart goes way back to the day when they first made that black and white album,,,
He looks heartbroken oh my gosh he is amazing
When he squeaks "thank you, cheers" I love him
Most people's accent becomes less pronounced when they sing, some lose it altogether when they sing so you can't even tell they have an accent at all, and this has always been fascinating to me. NOW I'm fascinated by how pronounced his accent IS while he sings, lol!
He is so attractive. I love how intelligent he is. His charisma is sweeping me off my feet.
Crazy that this is 7 years old goodness
I love The 1975 because I can listen to the album versions of song and move along and appreciate it, but at the same time I can listen to an acoustic version and appreciate the emotion just the same. I've yet to meet someone who doesn't like the 1975. They're truly unique and exquisite.
this is one of the most interesting young new musicians i have heard/seen in a long time-- chatted w him after his concert in Saratoga Springs last yr--- he is totally adorable-- sweet smart gracious-- and talented.
he was a music major in college
Maybe so--- but as an artist wo went to art school myself-- I learned to truly "see" and understand shape color and texture when illustrating -- from a very difficult illustration teacher, wo him I would have never known that skill paired with my god given talent. I think his formal training along with raw talent has shaped who he is as a musician. And its all good.
Dom Espo thank you for commenting---

Sometimes the right teacher can make an artist blossom.
Awww when he said "thank you" "cheers" after chocolate
This is so pure & beautiful. What an amazing piece of art. Just close your eyes and let Matthew serenade you into the clouds.
He sounds so greatful when they clap. ^-^
If you don't like his voice then leave this video. Stop hating in the comment section. This like all his other live performances is fucking amazing.
nah ill do w.e i want in a public comment section but thanks broad
Yeah, Chantelle O. STFU
tiny desk part 2 1975 pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
It took me so long to realise that chocolate is about mattys drug addiction, but once you realise its ao obvious.
its actually about a girl's drug addiction. I think either a sister or friend. I don't remember
I had no idea matty had a drug addiction
+The Racist Gamer ugh! Is about struggles with cocaine
ahh that would be UGH! chocolate is about weed.
@@harryz721 2 years later and their song "It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)" is about his heroin addiction.
6 years later and this still takes my breath away
Why is it raining in my house? Oh wait, it's just my tears.
please do another 1975 tiny desk concert! with there new songs! they have improved in so many ways! please begging you NPR!!!
I so wish I was musical, how brilliant to be able to pick up a guitar and sing like that,
Go Matty....
anyone can play guitar if u want it enough I thought I'd never be able play lol as for singing.. that's the difficult bit.
nope, just figured I can't listen to this while doing my homework, I just start fangirling and freaking out toooo much.
trying the same. my computer is currently ontop of my book. can´t do shit
is it just me or have all of these 'tiny desk concerts' been poppin up in the recommended since quarantine?
gotta say, i'm not disappointed. this is a gem.
wow i'm still here and i wish there was a newer version, with all their new beautiful songs !
you ever feel something sadder than sadness n just sit n can't stop thinking about that thing all day
this is how i feel
down to earth
I don't think I've ever wanted an Epiphone over a Gibson until today. What a beautiful guitar.
Epiphone is basically a cheaper Gibson. I believe they make Epiphones. Both are veryyy gooood.
SAME. i went in and played that guitar today and i really like it. for $550 its exceptional.
The moment he picked up his electronic guitar my heart beats crazily fast
ill never stop coming back to this
how perfect is matty?
all of it.
yes.
Perfect.
he has this cute unique face. Such honest eyes. Those eyebrows (: Eeyore eyebrows
HOW DO I STOP LISTENING TO THIS JESUS FUCKING CHRIST I WANNA CRY THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
Just saw The 1975 on their latest tour and felt the need to revisit this. It's been such an evolution as a fan enjoying their music and their very distinct point of view. I really hope they (Matty) return for another NPR Tiny desk soon. Just love hearing their songs broken down and distilled into this pure and simple story-telling.
Nothing better than a stripped-down, acoustic talented singer-songwriter. Great sound.
