      I totally agree Colin. I got fed up of looking in my subs to c if another vid had come out :).
      Just hope they don`t go too main-stream.

      Thanks Colin! That's nice to hear. Don't worry PatricK were pretty happy being a small team as we can stay nimble and focus on projects that were excited about. I'm not really sure what "going mainstream" means as the youtube audience is pretty pretty pretty big. I wonder how viewing figures on terrestrial TV compares with things like Netflix and TH-cam. I'm sure I could Google it and find out. I'm big boned AND lazy.

      Eamon Stack Thanks so much for the comment. We're always trying to improve the production on each show and all comments about stabilisation and grading are all taken on board and hopefully each new episode will be a small improvement on the previous. Thanks again for all the support and positivity.

      @ Sean Tufnell I'd take a Model 3 over a Ferrari quicker to 60 or not and Ferrari's are for a completely different market most people are not interested in.

    • @grendelum
      @grendelum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just think... 500k preorders on the Model 3, at $1000 per preorder, that's *$500M* to Tesla before the first one shipped... now that they are shipping, we'll soon be seeing a *lot* more Tesla on the roads... which is a good thing :)

  • @Electrat
    @Electrat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +187

    Surely in the UK a 'frunk' should be a 'froot'? ;-)

    • @adrianking8752
      @adrianking8752 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Think it would be Fronnet as us Brits refer to the hood as a bonnet, the boot would be at the rear.

    • @Electrat
      @Electrat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good point!

    • @bulman07
      @bulman07 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      But isn't 'frunk' a 'front trunk', rather than 'frood' for 'front hood', so it would be 'froot' for 'front boot', not 'fronnet' for 'front bonnet', since that's already at the front... That is a confusing comment.

    • @adrianking8752
      @adrianking8752 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frunk is perfect if you ask me Frood or Fronnet just sound wrong...

    • @Electrat
      @Electrat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yeh, I'm with you. It is a front boot so therefore 'froot'.

    I am a total Tesla fan I have a model 3 reservation. I get that the Model S 100D Is a brilliant car and is safe and environmentally amazing. At an eye watering £95,000 does take the shine off it a little as a sensible choice to get around. I am grateful for the people that can afford them to pay/pave the way for the day we don't have any petrol / diesel powered cars at all.
    I personally am buying a Model 3 and I must admit I will struggle to afford it but want to support Tesla and make sure they thrive and continue to change the automotive industry across the world. My wife needed a car while we wait the two years (realistically) for the model 3 to arrive in Australia, I want it to be the very last petrol car I buy. :}
    Thank you so much Fully charged for making your intelligent, funny, informative show!
    Cheers.

    There is a strong rumour that Tesla has made a step change in battery management and efficiency, which will first manifest with Model 3 75kwh pack. Only a couple of weeks away!! Forget the GTE please.

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hope so. I'm hoping for a model 3 with a range comparable to the Model S 100D.
      Simply because in Australia, range issues are a bit more problematic than they might be in other places, and the current specifications listed for model 3 range are uncomfortably low for the driving conditions we get around here...

    • @DennisBloodnokPhotographyVideo
      @DennisBloodnokPhotographyVideo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      A Model 3 with a 75kwh battery will be a great car. I am looking at a Hyundai Ioniq EV or Kia Soul EV or Nissan Leaf EV as my car next.

    Robert, do you think you'd ever do a video about the 2nd hand market in Electric cars? I know you talked a lot about renting them a while ago. Is buying still not your recommendation? I would love an electric car but can't afford any brand new vehicle, nevermind an electric one. I'm limited to the second hand market.

    • @nettlesoup
      @nettlesoup 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      soundslave That's actually a great idea. Just ask the seller if they'd be happy to let him take it for a test drive and give them some free advertising. Too few people bother to check the 2nd hand market because they equate battery longevity to that of their their smartphone.
      Could also point out some tips on how to check the battery has not been sat on the forecourt for too long at the wrong charge level. Discuss the pros and cons of private vs dealer sales.

    • @soundslave
      @soundslave 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What was the owner smoking when they gave you that price? Did it have a massive mileage?
      I'd struggle to get a 2 year old petrol hatchback for that price. Nevermind an EV.

    • @simonwhite2890
      @simonwhite2890 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bought from a Nissan dealer in Sunderland, ex PCP or similar car I think. Nissan had told them to sell them on and offered 1K off for taking out 0% finance, kept wondering where the catch was bur all was cool. They even put it on a low loader and delivered it to a port in Scotland for me!

    • @soundslave
      @soundslave 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd never take that offer, way too good to be true. I looked up used Leafs and they're like 10k mostly, and older than 2 years by a long way.

    Tesla needed to make a car with ridiculous performance. Gets them publicity and debunks the myth that EV's are too slow. Also most respond more to emotion than logic so they needed some flashy stuff to get folks interested in the brand.

      Well they need good PR on all fronts, otherwise people simply will not acknowledge them as "real" cars.
      This is why no one else has been successful previously, even Tesla themselves didn't get anywhere with their quite modestly performing/priced roadster.

    • @FlaviaPitariu
      @FlaviaPitariu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MsSomeonenew the roadster was a lotus elise with electric motors, not really exciting. Most people don't like buying cars like that.
      Tesla will always struggle because people think they are not true cars because of the no engine

    • @gasdive
      @gasdive 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      MsSomeonenew That's an odd usage of "didn't get anywhere with" that I wasn't previously aware of. I didn't know that meant "pre sold every car, made enough profit to pay for designing a clean sheet luxury performance car, and the factory to build it"

    brilliant - and beautifully filmed/edited. Please don't stop reviewing hybrids. Yes, they are are huge compromise, but millions of us live in houses without off-road parking and have no other choice at the moment. Don't ignore us! As soon as there are charging points on residential streets (every lamp post?) we'll go fully electric, but until then, we need to know what the greenest compromise is. Thanks - from one of your Patreon supporters.

      Thx for the link. I think it stated they will shut 37 sites by March 2018. The combined sites account for around 9 percent of India’s coal production (from the 80% of india's coal it supplies now) which is still good news and some other interesting facts.
      I will look forward to the next Fully Charged news update on the take of how or if subsidies to solar companies account for the reduction.

    The 2012 Model S 85's I believe charge at 117kW? That's 1.44C of real capacity.
    The 100D now, seems throttled to (a lot flat curve) of 115kW. That's 1.12C.
    With the same C rate, the 100C could charge at just under 150kW. Considering the 75 charges at 99kW (same cells as 100 pack), it could at least do 135kW.
    If Tesla allowed the 100 pack to be charged as fast as the 75 pack, you'd save some good time on charging.

      Vux911 just for reference, if the car has a 100kWh battery, and charges from a120kW charger, it could theoretically charge in less than 1 hour from 0. Reality is it charges fast for the first 80% then the remaining 20% tops off slower to protect the batteries.

    Great episode - looking forward to the trickle-charge solar update. Can I please request some info or an episode that approaches the practicality and/or engineering challenge of achieving a credible towing function on EVs in production now. Rumpurs are representing unclear messaging which Fully Charged could apply some polite frankness the status. By towing I mean a tow-bar bike rack and small trailers. Its another area of uncertainty which is dissuading commitment to purchase! Great stuff - Great show - Many Thanks

      See that would be a somewhat bad idea. These cameras are focused only for sensing all the things around the car. It should stay focused on that. It'll also mean we'll have to add more storage separately and it's all a software based mess. It's much more efficient (I believe) to use a separate dash cam. While the idea is great, it should be the lower than the current issues that needs to be dealt with in priority.

    Good video, as always. I was a bit surprised by your positive comments about the back seat. I find the back seat of my Model S to be quite cramped and the seat is uncomfortable. Mine was built in August 2015 with the so-called "original" seats, so possibly the more recent seats are more comfortable. But the space allocation has not changed. I have carried three adults in my back seat, and it is possible, but it is quite tight and somewhat difficult to fasten all the seat belts (surprisingly, given the generous width of the car). Full disclosure: Most of my occasional rear seat passengers do not complain about the seat comfort unless there are three of them, so it is possible I am fussier than most (and I am a tad over 6 feet tall).
    I'd be interested in your comments on the SAS (smart air suspension) if your own Model S does not have it.
    Very good videography, good clear audio, and very nice graphics!

    Tesla recommendations are to plug in the car in the US or Canada into a 120 volt out and set the max charge limit to 50 %. This way the car battery is always an the optimal temperature never too warm or too cold. Winter or summer doesn't matter. A friend of mine left his wife's MS in their garage and when they got home it was dead as a door nail due to the first big Northeastern storm took down a lot of trees and power lines. He called me to see if I knew where he could get a generator. I loaned him my 5 KW gas generator as it allowed him to get the heating system up and running, it's a steam heating system and as part of his winterization routine he completely drains the boiler, then refills it when he and his wife return from Florida. His house is in the boonies as we call it and no power means no water from the well. His wife was real happy when the lights came on after I fired up the generator. 45 minutes later we had the heating system warming up. The temperature was 7 degrees above zero F. inside the house when we fired the boiler up. Two hours later the house was almost normal. His wife when we came out of the basement was hugging the radiator in the kitchen asking where's the heat.
    I asked if she felt any heat yet and stated all she heard was hissing air from the radiator and I replied you'll have heat in a couple of minutes then. She didn't move from the radiator for over an hour as the day before it was 96 degrees where they were on Florida.
    I set her MS to charge at 12 amps at 120 volts which will take a while but W I'll slowly heat up the battery, it took just over 3 hours before it actually started charging the battery. They now have an automatic start stop generator on the house and have given me a key to the house and written permission to be in the house if the cops show up. If as an example your out of the country for a year to work for another company you can always check the status of the car by your cellphone to make sure it still getting a charge and no one has unplugged it from the outlet. Where you plug it into the car it's locked and can't be unplugged unless your there or authorize it to be removed.

    Oh dear. How can you say there's plenty of legroom and comfortable backseat when you're basically sitting on the floor, knees folded. That's a horrible position to be in even for half an hour.

      Samuli Ripatti I can't sit in the back of an S unless it has the sunroof, and even then my head is pressing on the glass.
      I'm 6' with long torso, probably like 6' 2".

    • @SteveZimmermannAtHome
      @SteveZimmermannAtHome 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Samuli, that's always been the knock on the Model S rear seat: the depth of the battery pack and the sloping rear roofline for aerodynamics means the seat bottom has to be close to the floor to accommodate adult torso lengths, so tall people sit in the back with their knees too high and their heads too close to the roof. The Model S is a marvel of packaging efficiency and you can carry an amazing amount of stuff in one, but rear seat comfort isn't the best.

    Regarding regen, if it slows too much don't you worry about not showing any brake lights? I've got a leaf (because I'm poor but I love it) and if there's some uneducated oaf in a four litre panzer right up my chuff I think about touching the pedal to let them know I'm slowing down. Still, it is funny when they blast past and then dive into the petrol station for yet another 80 quids worth.
    Seriously though if the regen is stronger then that sounds like a risk.

    Hi, great review as allways, how much did it cost to charge on the non tesla supercharger ?

  • @MercedesAMGsRULE
    @MercedesAMGsRULE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I honestly think I've spent less time charging than when I used to fill up with petrol. It takes less than 10 seconds to plug in and unplug my electric car on my drive, Vrs 5 min for calling at the petrol, I can fill my EV at least 15 times instead of filling with petrol! It's brilliant. Also since I've had my Tesla MX 75D with standard wheels I've averaged 352Wh/mile since new (done 3000 miles now!) ...And I recently did a 202 mile round trip and the computer said I still had 33miles left.
