  • 1,300 miles in an electric car in two and a bit days.
    In February 2015 I drove a Tesla Model S P85 from Oslo, Norway, to London, England. This is what happened.
    With many thanks to Nikki Gordon Bloomfield who filmed much of the trip.

    Robert, if you were going to Oslo, you should have met up with Bjorn Nyland. No single person has driven as much in a Model S as much as he and he's gone to just about every corner of Norway.

      Mateusz Wojtkiewicz yeah because there is no maintance. you seem to know a lot about cars. and if you have 150,000$ you can spend it on a 2010 bmw and use the rest of the money to travel anywhere free forever too you fucktard you can even get a fucking mercedes S class.

      ye ye Let me remind you that this "Stupid" Electric car in the long run, will be cheaper than those that you mentioned, and did you know that on 0-60 the P85D is faster than all of mercedes and bmw cars?

    • @user-hr2zy7ct8h
      @user-hr2zy7ct8h 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Roberto Lafarga obviously you know a lot about cars. this car is faster than every benz and bmw? I think it will barely keep up with a '95 bmw 320i on the nurburgring. not to mention something in its' pricerange :). don't make me laugh. it might be fast on a quartermile... for 2-3 hours. that's not what we germans call fast :). and all CO2 emissions from shipping parts of this car to the factors, the cars to the dealerships, the building of electricity networks for the charge stations, the building of the charge stations, the waste of fossil energys in all the batteries, etc. simply to pleasure a few stupid rich people.

    I wanted to reply to this person but clearly he's a bit frightened and has set up his account so you can't reply to him. Poor little chap.
    Anyway, nice bit of ignorant pro-oil polemic using African people as a joke to make a vicious and cruel point.
    Maybe this Zrak 23 fellow has heard of the Niger Delta, probably not, wouldn't fit into his ultra narrow world view. Don't Google it, you'll get too depressed, brutal history of oil companies making sure they can maintain their supply. Bugger the poor souls that live there. Our oil history is a massive seething pile of brutality, corruption and greed, incredible levels of coercion used on governments around the world. But much more fun to have a pop at slimey guilt ridden tree hugging wankers like me with our tofu salads and sandals and mandala's hanging in the kitchen... oh wait. I don't have any of those things. Anyway, he's a tosser... moving on.

    You could drive it all the way to Toulouse I noticed on Tesla's supercharger map. At the end of this year you will be able to go to Gibraltar or Turkey.
    The supercharger network is really cool I think and is probably the most valueable asset of Tesla's. It will be a huge selling point when they release the model 3.

    • @purrdey
      @purrdey 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      FDK The supercharger network IS really cool but by the time they launch the Model 3 it will quickly be very UNCOOL unless they have trebled or quadrupled the number of stations, since I for one do not want to turn up in my Model S and find that I'm in a queue behind several Model 3s.

Now the thought of doing a 2 day car journey is annoying but when you hit the road its amazing! We went through england,belgium,netherlands and germany and the views i seem were amazing! You get to view the scenery in a couple of countries when the sun is out and its 20 degrees outside with the sun beaming down. If you ever get the offer of doing it i suggest you do take it on.

    I did the same journey a month back, almost.
    It was from Wales to the Norwegian border and back, but diverting to Normandy to watch the Tour de France. It was 3000 miles, and fantastic. It was in our Bentley Continental Flying Spur, and the only other British car we saw north of Belgium was a Tesla Model S parked next to us in the hotel in Gothenburg.
    Our Bentley managed 24mpg, which is reasonably good for its bulk, and although I cannot afford a Tesla, I know that I'd love one. The Bentley amuses me for its decadent excess, like a dinosaur living out its last few years, chomping its was through the grasslands.
    In the meantime our electric Renault Fluence is wonderful for shorter journeys, up to 100-120 miles, more if we want. Its smooth, quiet, relaxed and quite, quite effortless. And, yes, as a Bentley driver I say that, electric cars are really, really good.
    However, just as with computers at home, and mobile phones twenty years ago, people are still not understanding why they should move across. Fortunately, the small trickle of electric cars is turning into a flood.

    Nice. The avarage power consumption per km is quite a bit higher than what I expected. Just to compare, I have a 22400mAh batterybank. At 3.7V of lithium-ion cells nominal voltage it has 82,88Wh of capacity. The car has around thousand times that. The power bank cost £12,99 so equivalent amount would be £13k. One battery bank has 8 cells, and to my knowledge, Tesla also uses the same 18650 cells. Basically a car would have 8200 cells (8200*2800*3,7=84,952kWh).. And 325A, that is a huge amount of current...

  • @DerDudelino

    Yeah, this is just amazing. I think the free charging basically is the killer argument for Tesla at this point.

    I will say it cheaper but not faster as you have to stop every time to recharge and it take longer to refuel . if it was a s class diesel probably does 35 mpg driving sensibly so 2 full tank one to start one refuel in the middle .

    The problem with Free WiFi in Germany is that the owner of the Internet access point can be held liable for any malicious things a user might do. That's why they are so rarely to be seen.

    • @JeanPierreWhite
      @JeanPierreWhite 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Markus Birth Europe and Germany in particular have a disease called techno-panic. Sure they "could" be held liable for all sorts of stuff, but will they? The remotest possibility of liability through the use of new technology results in a huge over-reaction. The same liability exists in the litigious USA, but free WiFi is offered in many places.
      The car analogy to this is the remote chance that the car I drive flicks up a stone and damages a pedestrian or the windshield of the car behind. I'd be liable for the damages. Does that mean I should not drive on public roads for fear of harming someone else and being held liable? No it's a risk we accept with technology we are accustomed to. Invent something new like the internet or an EV and we must stop using or sharing the technology because of 'liability'. Its a poor excuse and example of unbridled fear of the unknown or poorly understood.

      Michael Edmond You've hit on the two main problems. Viz; a lack of 'ordinary' (ie, not big, fast, luxury) cars and the total lack of infrastructure. These two factors must put droves of people off. It bothers me, and I get a car every 3 years though Motability.

    • @purrdey
      @purrdey 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Edmond Why do you need (Super)chargers locally? Superchargers are for long trips, so if I drive to Ullapool, I need a SC at Warrington, Carlisle, Glasgow, Fort William, Dingwall/Inverness. If they installed one a mile away from my home I couldn't really benefit from it - you need Superchargers on the WAY to to where you're going, NOT where you are.

    • @MichaelEdmond
      @MichaelEdmond 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      purrdey I mean any chargers. There is only a couple in my whole town, there are no superchargers and maybe three chargers in the whole town. And they are not even situated in the town centre!

    • @purrdey
      @purrdey 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Edmond You're missing my point. Assuming that you are charging at home, why do you need chargers (of any kind) where you ARE (as opposed to en route to where you're going long distance)? If they put one on every lamppost for a 20m radius they would surely be of liitle use?

    • @MichaelEdmond
      @MichaelEdmond 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      purrdey because.... i cannot home charge, and neither can many residents in the town i live (lack of drives or dedicated/allocated parking) AND I am a taxi driver, so if i wanted to use an EV for work (which i would like) then i am really restricted. Until they can provide some sort of infrastructure for the many people that cannot home charge then there will be a large market that 'just cannot' switch.
      If I had a drive it would not be an issue, and i cannot even park in front of my house as there is a junction opposite, so a dedicated spot with a charger will be half way down my street at least.... (even though i could not get a dedicated spot anyway)

    Hallo,
    Nice video, but there are some things I have to disagree.
    Using Tesla S P85, in same color for some of our business trips I found some differences as to the presented video (the car is 2 years old with more than 40.000km)
    I went from Prague to Göthenburg and back. While keeping maximum speed up to 120km/h with no airconditioning or heating I was happy to reach the supercharger in Copenhagen. On Highway the real distance you can run is about 300-320km anything above and you are in risk going really low on the battery. If you take in consideration charging it is not faster than a normal car, but yes it is cheaper.
    And we like our Tesla car :)

    • @fullychargedshow
      @fullychargedshow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In other videos on this channel I go into a bit more detail about how you find chargers, they are marked on the sat nav and if you are doing a long trip, the car suggests places you can charge on the trip. There are 100's of supercharger station in UK, USA and Europe and they charge the car in 20-30 minutes. There are 10's of thousands of slower (overnight) chargers in hotels,car parks, and private homes too. The charging network is expanding very rapidly. As for how long the battery lasts, no one truly knows for sure, the cars are still to new. My NISSAN Leaf has done 57,000 miles, battery fine. My Tesla only 11,000. I would expect 150,000 miles without problems, then a slow decrease in overalls range. There are examples of electric cars that have done 200,000 miles on original battery, but when battery has reached end of useful life in car, it will be repurposed as domestic/industrial electricity storage system which could last another 25 years.

    The Tesla supercharger network is the secret sauce that electric cars needed. Other manufacturers could also make the cars and develop them over time to match the model S, but no one else tried to create the infrastructure needed to support them.

    • @zolikoff
      @zolikoff 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What infrastructure? It's just a proprietary charger. Other electric cars accept a more universal charging method. I swear at this point it's like comparing Apple (Tesla) with the variety of android phones (other EVs) and it's just cult of personality praising Tesla while they actually charge you more money to sell nicely packaged thin air.

    • @srinitaaigaura
      @srinitaaigaura 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the problem is that there isn't any universal charger like a USB C that can also fast charge for other EVs.

    • @zolikoff
      @zolikoff 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The regular charging method right now is universal standard, and it charges 40% as fast as a Tesla supercharger. And while yes, there isn't a universal *fast* charger for EVs available right now, don't think it's not in the works.

    I'm not pro-oil or anti electric cars or anything, I love Tesla motors in fact but at the end there you said a Tesla is both cheaper and faster. I agree its cheaper, but how is it faster if you can fuel up a petrol/diesel car in minutes and don't mind driving for long spells at a time?

    • @padraigflynn9676
      @padraigflynn9676 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ger, I do not think that a Tesla is much cheaper than a petrol/diesel car in the long run. With the tesla you have to replace the batteries every 8 years which is 12,000. Then you have to pay tesla a fee for the charging which I think is about 1,500. Also the cost of the car is very expensive.

    • @daveriley6310
      @daveriley6310 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mr. Flynn, I am curious how you conclude that the life span of the battery pack is 8 years. I concede that a driver who regularly uses superchargers (bad for battery longevity) and/or regularly charges to 100% (also bad) may get just 8 years or less; but, a properly looked after battery can be expected to far exceed that time frame. My calculations result in an expected battery life of 15 - 20 years at an annual mileage of 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year. I will likely drive my Model 3 only 3,000 to 5,000 miles per year, so the battery will likely outlive me.

    • @padraigflynn9676
      @padraigflynn9676 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read on one of the motoring web sites that the battery on tesla model s only lasts for 8 years. Obviously we do not know how long they last because the cars are so new. I can not see a battery lasting for 15 years in the circumstances that you discuss.

    • @daveriley6310
      @daveriley6310 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Padraig, Check with me in 2033 and we will see how my Model 3 battery is doing. Erick Belmer's Volt has 300,000 miles, including between 2,500 and 3,000 charge/discharge cycles (100,000 miles) and including 200,000 miles on the engine. He reports that there is little or no degradation to the battery. If I drove the Model 3 about 4,000 miles a year, as discussed, that is only 20 cycles of the battery. Fifteen years = 300 cycles. The battery will barely be broken in. My life expectancy is less than my forecast for the Model 3 battery life expectancy. Check with me again in 2047. The Model 3 should have 90k - 150k miles on it by then.
