I've been using a Sta-Wet palette for years. You can make your own as well with a tupperware container and a sponge! You can find DIY all over. But the Sta-Wet is worth it for me because of the size, shape, etc. And you use less water than that, normally, haha. Wring out your sponge a bit more and you will have preserved paint blobs, instead of a runny mess.
I’m so sorry for the turmoil America finds itself in right now. If it helps, the rest of the world is also stressed by your election - 🥴😢 Whoever you voted for, whatever the outcome, I truly hope it will be accepted as the will of the voters. Peace...✌🏻xxx
As an art teacher, I have used and recommended the sta-wet palette for a long time, it does work great but does have some hiccups. It is best to use distilled water with the sponge or spritz peroxide underneath on the pad, mold and odor can very easily happen when sealed up, and it can keep your paints wet for a few weeks but water seeps up from the sponge and can affect the integrity of your acrylics as they are water based paints. I have since switched to a new wave glass palette that they make to fit exactly inside the sta wet, mist paints on glass w water and cover w a sheet of glassine paper. After 1 week paint is still totally workable and no issues of mold- a bit more eco friendly on not having to purchase the sheets of paper and can use a window scraper to clean glass palette. Just a Tip since I work with these a lot with students in classes.
I kept getting distracted by Rae's fabulous nails. They look particularly nice this week. Edit: For people who can't afford a Sta-Wet pallet, the miniature painting community has been making them for pennies for years. Take a discarded plastic container. Put down a thin sponge. Lay a square of parchment paper (from the kitchen department) over it. As showcased they work great and will save you a fortune on paint. (Massive love to Jazza for putting those boxes together and helping artists get started or delve into something new in useful, affordable kits.)
You can actually DIY the sta-wet palette! Just get (a bucket and a mop lol) an airtight container, some a cloth (the kind made of cellulose) and a sheet of baking/parchment paper. You basically just do the same thing as with the palette except u don’t wet the paper, wet the rag put it in the bottom and then just put the paper on top! This palette will also work like the one she showed (the paints can get a bit watered down) but other than that I think it’s pretty good!
I’d say it’s still better to invest in a proper one as they are higher quality and will last longer, but I can’t talk for everyone. Also, to stop over thinning, after you’ve soaked the sponge an paper, run a flat object, like a thin piece of wood or something, over the paper to get rid of water droplets on the surface of the paper, which can over thinning your paints. Also, only soak the sponge slightly over its capacity, so a tiny amount of water is visable on the sponge
@@pianomanwithapianoplan504 What makes it higher quality though? Does the sponge last forever? Dont you still have to replace the paper after you paint on it or does the paint rinse right off?
@@Noodles4Anime the paper is specifically designed for miniature paints, so it will let just the right amount of water through it. The sponge will last a lot longer, unless you can find a large container, you might not have as much room in it as you want. The whole thing will just be less durable than one you buy, the plastic will be more prone to breaking. A homemade one is still good, but if you want to get serious about mini painting it might be a good idea to but a better one.
Yeah, the idea has been around for quite some time for sure. Definitely not new (at least here in the UK) my art teacher used one but without the sponge layer, that has to be at least 6 years ago and I saw them in the shops before that. Seems like the watering down the paint could be a big flaw though if that's not the look you were going for... although you could mix a bunch of different colours, leave it overnight and come back to dry it off and claim it as abstract art 😆.
My mom used to put a wet kitchen towel on a plastic container lid when she painted with acrylic paints. After she was done for the day, she would cover the wet towel with the plastic container and it seemed to keep the paint moist and usable the next day.
I had to get the sta-wet palette for my art school and honestly the coolest shit ever, it makes painting so much easier. You can also reuse the paper, it comes with just a few, don't throw em out, all you have to do is gently wash them off and you can reuse them a few times.
I use a homemade stay wet pallet that has served me well for years. It's just a clear plastic food container (the ones takeout food is sometimes packed in) in which I place wet paper towels at the bottom and then place a single sheet of parchment paper on top of the wet paper towels. Then simply use the surface of the parchment paper as the palette space and close the lid when not using the paints.

Substitute for the brush cleaner is soaking brushes in Murphy's oil soap. Just make sure you have the water below the handle so you dont get expanding from the ferrule which could break the brush head from the handle. I dont recommend sitting it for over night unless you have really bad caked on paint. It will also condition your brushes which will help a bit with straggly brush hairs. Once done rinse super well with water and I highly recommend washing your brush with brush soap so you dont potentially compromise your paints :) when I worked at my university art department as a student worker, this is how we saved the expensive brushes that people would ruin lol Hope this helps!
The funny thing is, I used that graphite putty in my drawing class the other day and I absolutely despised it. It's a texture thing, it was cold like she said, and it was crumbly. Once the oil absorbed into my fingers it was crumbly and dry. Definitely not for everyone.

Hi rae! I just started my own art channel and it's basically thanks to you. I've watched you for a while and you have helped me get much better at drawing!
I had an art teacher, and her recommendation for shaping brushes was to just use saliva. It really does work. Just wet the brush in your mouth and shape it with your lips or fingers. You can make a really fine point that way.
I do that but I don't put the brush in my mouth since am scared of like the chemicals doing smth bad to me- I lick my index finger and my thumb then shape the brush once my fingers are wet enough- *ofc making sure my fingers are clean and have no paint on em lol*
Hey Ray, thank you for displaying these weird art supplies and putting them to the test. out of everything you had shown, the brush shaper liquid was the one that had me sitting at the edge of my chair. I would like to know how the brushes performed with painting as this was not really featured in the video and you only showed them off dry (which was still impressive, but they also looked a bit slick and I was nervous about if they only looked repaired because they were glued together by the dry liquid kinda like newly store brought brushes) If they still retain shape after having been used with water, i would love to go acquire this product for myself and my brushes.
I have been making my own wet palette for years-& I use a frisbee, lay on a wet paper towel, & place a piece of parchment paper on top. Which is where I put my paint. To keep it wet over night, I wrap it all in a plastic bag!
I used to use the sta- wet palette all the time, they were amazing!!! You can actually just use a wet paper towel and some regular palette paper if you run out of the special paper or the sponge gets old☺️ love your videos, Rae
I feel like the graphite putty would be very useful for filling in large areas in pencil drawings. A lot of people start with just regular old pencils and I feel like this could really help in developing larger pieces.

We use different types of clear paint in the miniature painting hobby! likewise, wet palettes are absolutely essential to miniature and model painting hobbyists, the nature of the work we do is such that we often need to keep very small amounts of mixed paint wet for days at a time, so the properties of the palette are really important. There's a lot of texture and effect paints specific to models and miniatures, it might be worth dropping into a scale model or wargame store to see what they have sometime if you haven't before
Hey Rae, longtime viewer! Do you think you could do a tutorial/how-to on mixed media art with watercolors and copic markers? There are enough videos on it that I know it exists but they move too fast for me to figure out how they are doing it. I've been wanting to get back into watercolor and also wanted to get into copics so when I found out you could mix them I got super excited! ^^
Whoa, that brush shaper liquid... my personal conclusion: it’s literally a pot of magic potion. Yup. Straight up: mystical, supernatural, occult, secret, otherworldly friggin’ magic. You’re welcome that I figured it out!

My inspiration I am really so happy to see u get back in order and I can actually relate To u by not only art but also illness. 🙂🙂
Yay a heart from her. Amazing girl. Stupendous.
I had an art teacher, and her recommendation for shaping brushes was to just use saliva.
It really does work. Just wet the brush in your mouth and shape it with your lips or fingers. You can make a really fine point that way.
Not a great idea of you use toxic or carcinogenic paints tho. But saliva used to be a popular method
I do that but I don't put the brush in my mouth since am scared of like the chemicals doing smth bad to me- I lick my index finger and my thumb then shape the brush once my fingers are wet enough- *ofc making sure my fingers are clean and have no paint on em lol*
Eww
@@Sunnydaze081 Ew what? It is not even gross
same, I've always did that lol.. but I dont put them in my mouth, I use another way that won't put my life on danger xd
Who thinks Rae and Moriah Elizabeth should collaborate?

I know right! I was looking at that orange/black gradient more than the weird supplies
I only noticed it in the middle of the video and was wondering if the gradient was from graphite putty lol

The sta-wet palette is not new but it’s great and lasts so long, I’ve had mine for about 3 years now and it’s just 💕

@Nuha HUSSAIN way worse we have a chance to become zombies😰
I kept thinking she was writing “role” on the paper
And save us from the tiresome hatchwork we are taught in art schoos...
Why wasting the Sketchbook pages like that!?!?....

Hi rae!!❤ can I leave a video suggestion?can you pls review the hetherone double - sided dual brush pen set pls?
I love how you channel is really fun and cool and most importantly family friendly!
We use different types of clear paint in the miniature painting hobby! likewise, wet palettes are absolutely essential to miniature and model painting hobbyists, the nature of the work we do is such that we often need to keep very small amounts of mixed paint wet for days at a time, so the properties of the palette are really important. There's a lot of texture and effect paints specific to models and miniatures, it might be worth dropping into a scale model or wargame store to see what they have sometime if you haven't before
Omg gosh! I am so early. I was just studying for my online exam and your notification popped up. I love your videos
