    SHEIN STEALS PEOPLE'S ARTWORK! There is a girl from Pakistan who created a painting, shared it on social media and then Shein copied her artwork like EXACT COPY and sold it on their website. She called them out but sadly, nothing is done against them....yet.

    I work at Goodwill and we get a ton of Shein clothes and I hate it. My main problem alongside the problem with fast fashion is they've had their clothes tested several times...and pretty much every time there were products with twice the legal amount of Lead in clothing allowed in The United States.

    I balance out my use of fast fashion retailers by wearing stuff for years. Don't care if it's out of style, I'm not going to stop wearing it! And if there is stuff I get rid of I take it to charity shops (luckily I live in a place with loads of those) and if it's worn out they can recycle it. I have found some nice things second hand, both in charity shops and on ebay, so I mix those things into my wardrobe.

      This. My mom gets angry when I spent $70 on a pair of leg warmers but it’s sustainable and it means I’m going to wear them for 5+ years before I think of donating them. I also tend to buy a lot of fast fashion stuff all at once so I can use those clothes for the next 2 years and only buy new clothes when I think something is a must in my closet or I need something new to style my current selection of clothes. My mom likes to buy clothes for me and although I appreciate it, I usually don’t wear them and a lot of money is wasted because of it. I don’t need anything more when I can mix and match my pieces into multiple outfits with different themes, you’re just feeding into fast fashion when you do that :/

    In addition to the shein controversy, they are currently one of the only big "retailers" that cater to plus size fashion and clothing for relatively reasonable prices. Plus size women in particular get the scraps when it comes to the fashion industry or are made to dress borderline matronly even while young bc retailers only make clothes that are unflattering and covering up. Even outside of just following trends, Shein is virtually the only place plus size people can realistically find clothes to dress how they want. (Though even that is drawing to a close with how many straight sized and midsized people are buying up plus size shein clothing for the "oversized" looked, so much so that 0x,1x,2x sizing on the site has started to cater to relatively midsized people and fit them better, but that's a whole other issue)

It would be impossible to boycott every retailer associated with some form of child or underpaid labor. I'm very aware of the evils of fast fashion, and especially when it comes to SheIn. I'm not defending them, I'm simply offering a point of view of why a lot of people still buy from them even if they don't like them as a company, myself included. I would like to point out that not all of us buy cheap clothes and throw them away in three weeks because of fashion. Some of us buy from places like Shein and wear the clothes until we physically cant anymore. Then what I do ot take the fabric and use it for something else. So, if people took a little personal responsibility sometimes and didnt throw clothes away after three weeks just because the fashion changes and instead wear them until they actually wear out enough to even throw away in the first place, or maybe instead of throwing them away they donate them. Then it would probably be a little more sustainable.
    And this is not a dog at you Rae I know where you're coming from, I more mean the that the people talking about them like they are a big problem and have all the responsibility, when their shoppers have partial responsibility for not being so wasteful of their clothes. I mean, idk how rough everyone is with their clothes but most of the time if I buy even cheap clothes they last at least a year or two. 🤷‍♀️

    I live in a small town in a 3rd world country and a lot of the online fast fashion debate seems so superficial to me because it's mostly privileged people trying to give alternatives that are only possible in their reality. There aren't any thrift stores where I live and I'd rather buy three fast fashion t-shirts that are going to last for years bc they will cost me as much as the shipping for one t-shirt from a local ethically made brand.
    It's important to understand that most of the clothes we all wear are made that way. Yes, even if it's high quality.
    Boycotting a handful of online stores is not gonna change anything, the focus should be on how the internet has made consumerism look even more desirable and how influencer culture creates "trends" that don't even reach real life people before going away. The influencers who rely on making clothing/makeup hauls for a living either make the money back or don't even pay for the products to begin with. The strawberry dress (even though the original is not from a fast fashion brand) and ball gown hauls are two examples of unnecessary consumerism that really intrigue me.
    Also, most of the people who can only afford fast fashion are not just throwing away their clothes once they stop being trendy and aren't getting their everyday clothes from places like Shein or Zara. There's no problem in buying clothes just because you think they look cool, as long as you're actually going to wear them in the future.

    2:07. I'm pausing the video here to say one thing about the statement made at about this point in the video. You see, a lot of influencers who are promoting "green living" like to push the idea that you vote with your dollar - you only buy from businesses that are "green". You only fund companies that are doing the "best" for the environment. This is really hard to do if you don't have a lot of money - at least in my local area a product is labelled as "environmentally friendly" and suddenly the price doubles. Its important to acknowledge that not everyone can afford to look somewhere else, and may be forced to turn to places like Shein just to afford the basics when it comes to clothing.
    Also, I don't know about anyone else, but thrift shops (or what I have always known as second-hand stores) are super expensive in my area. The same leggings I can get for $6 a piece in the supermarket are $12, or sometimes higher in these stores that are supposed to have better prices.

    • @AlottaBoulchit
      @AlottaBoulchit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Its like when everyone was going on and on about organic food and then all the companies started releasing organic food for twice the price. People start off genuinely concerned only to end up the new trendy cash cow.
      It's my opinion that if someone truly wants to be "eco friendly" then they should learn to sew and begin to make and mend their own clothing instead of buying any fashion. That's the best way to not participate in fast fashion and keep extra clothing out of landfills.

    • @fibromiteready2fight809

      @@AlottaBoulchit but then you have to factor in time to learn a new skill, time to sew the garments, cost of materials. And unless the fabric is thrifted, there’s issues with slave labor and cotton, and the micro plastics that shed when using synthetic fiber fabrics. There isn’t such a thing as “truly eco friendly “ with the current systems in place. (Not saying clothes making is bad btw. Just offering a different perspective).

    • @feelinglostinthepeople
      @feelinglostinthepeople 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@fibromiteready2fight809 I'm literally trying to learn to sew my own clothes rn and cost of materials is more than you'd think 🙃 I don't even have everything I need, and I'm fortunate enough to have a hand-me-down sewing machine, but I already spent more than $100. If I want to tie dye or further modify what I make, that's more cost. Luckily I work at a thrift store as well with a 50% discount so I'm saving the most I can really. But without all that, I can imagine it to be quite hard for people who are on a budget and don't have the means to afford it all. I think the solution to that would be to make sure people have enough money to be able to purchase sustainably and ethically by providing for other needs such as food and housing and making them low cost or providing subsidies. But that's the socialist in me speaking lol

    8:45 that looks like the extremely thin paper you can get massive rolls of for pretty cheap. Even standard printing paper is thicker than that (where I live, cheap printing paper is 80gsm)

    I've been looking at that bucket/palette thing for a while so Im happy I found your channel 🙂
    Also I have not had any problems with Shein and I very happy with the items (clothes, earrings, diamondpaintings, make up, some hobbysupplies and wallstickers)

    I like that you also added the bit about some people can't afford to shop just anywhere. I think that's forgotten a lot. I discovered Shein on my own like 5 years ago, have a few pair or pants, skirts, and shoes from them. Heard about all the drama not long after so I don't personally shop there anymore because I CAN afford to spend my money somewhere else. But what I do want to acknowledge, as far as clothing goes (never bought like house products or makeup haha), all of those pieces still look as new as the day I got them, and they are well made. Seriously. It's stupid how good the items I have are for the prices. Even the shoes are in tip top condition. I will wear all of it till it's falling apart, I can't understand how people go through brand new clothes then dump them so fast. Either way, it's a shitty company to support, but if you have money restrictions the quality of Shein is much better than places like Wish, AlliExpress, etc. in my opinion.

      I had mixed experience. I bought several items before the terrible practices reached me and some of them have lasted for years and some were falling apart later that week. It was apparent right out of the bag that 2 of the 6 shirts I bought were practically tissue paper. 1 of those ripped just putting it on. It wasn't too small and I wasnt forcing it but when I put my arms down it tore across the shoulder. The other started developing holes after just 2 washs on delicate despite the tag saying I could machine wash it. A third seemed fine until the entire right side seam unraveled in the wash 6 months in. I'd seen no signs of breakage and again it said I could machine wash but it still fell apart and my sewing machine was eating the fabric because it was so thin so I couldn't fix it. I still have the remaining 3 to this day almost 3 years later. 2 are genuinely just good quality the third is cheap but not tissue paper and I just don't wear it much as it's started to get see through

    Love that you address the environmental impact and the challenge of sustainable fashion and privilege. I’d also add that there are questionable labor practices. When things are so cheap, who isn’t getting paid.

    One thing I appreciate is that you mentioned that some people just can't afford and get hold of sustainable clothing many people on the Internet just accuse people of perpetuating band brands or say buy sustainable when it's not affordable for people on tight budgets and are barely getting paid as is

    I just saw an episode of Marketplace in which they tested some cheap clothing brands for dangerous chemicals. There was a lot of really toxic stuff in Shein's clothing. For example, some of the children's clothing that is faux leather like had 3 to 20 times the safe and legal amount of lead. In children's clothing (and purses) no less!!!! Makes me wonder about what's in those art supplies!!

    I'm so happy you also talked about the Paycheck part of people not being able to afford a lot of expensive clothes, because that's quite literally my Problem with clothes, since I can't afford a lot due to therapy being expensive :')
    But also when it comes to clothes plus size people have it so hard to find pretty clothes that aren't shoulder cutouts and loose so it's finally helpful to have a place that sells gorgeous clothing items for an affordable price and in big sizes

    one person buying fast fashion isn’t destroying the planet. the fast fashion companies who don’t stop making clothes are. and it’s not just fast fashion, it’s most clothing brands. it’s nearly impossible to buy anything ethically. they want us to sit here and point fingers at each other and get complexes about where we purchase clothing so they can keep doing what they’re doing while we all scream at each other.

    Those erasers are for thermal disappearing ink, that’s how erase-able pens are made and that’s just the rubber that’s at the ands of the pens that makes the heat between it and the paper that makes the ink disappear

    Just a little thought on your disclaimer…
    Isn’t fast fashion more a consumer issue then company? I buy what I like and I’m comfy in. I’ve never cared about fashion or what’s in style… if someone feels the need to keep buying the newest styles every couple weeks, that says more about the person… SHEIN are just playing it smart business wise and keeping up with those styles for people to buy… I dunno just my 2 cents I guess…
    Also, their plus sized (curvy as they call it) is soo great. Much rather that then the stores here to be honest… more range, more style and really comfy… most of the shops here are either really expensive or make you feel like you’re wearing a bedsheet/pillow case.
