I never said that all people on PC will not pirate games or that there should be no anti piracy measures (I assume thats what you mean by your locked car door comparison). I said IF everyone on PC was a pirate then games would not sell well. But because they do sell well then that means piracy is not as much of a concern as fanboys think it is. That was the point of my rhetorical question.

For xbox, just pay Microsoft 20$ for a lifetime key to let your Xbox gain access to dev mode and viola! its "jailbroken" (the reason why people jailbreak their console is to gain access to this mode, getting full control of their devices). It's been like this since Xbox One X.

This infamously happened with the sega dreamcast dude. I burned .cdi files on a cd-r/dvd-r( Cant remember what they were called) and straight up played them on my sega dreamcast.

reminder that most piracy on PC in regions where the currency isnt utter garbage (i am so sorry brazil) are abandonware titles or old ass console titles for emulaton. games which we cannot buy, could never buy or havent been able to buy in a long time, and that the only option for obtaining is piracy. when PC gamers have the option, we buy. when we dont then yes, we pirate, but only out of a lack of any other option.
Worth noting that that study right at the end only brings up "piracy" and not what games where pirated or why. I dont doubt the numbers are still the same but it lacks a LOT of context, especially in a world where games are being lost at an increasing rate and piracy becomes the only way they are playable and preserved
I remember Thor (Pirate Software) talking about this very issue with piracy. He was even talking about how he lowered the price of one of his games in Brazil to match the market and now 25% of the income from that game comes from Brazil.

The 1.8 billion gamers on pc is misleading as well since probably 1.6 of them play solitaire that came with their pc, or buy games so infrequently they are not really a market. That being said I mostly agree with his overall argument, PC gaming is big enough going exclusive console without it is usually going to be a bad idea. There are games that will just fit better for a specific Eco-system so will end up selling better on PC, PS, xbox etc than other systems but overall PC is too big of a market to ignore as most games aren't going to only jive with Ps gamers.

Correct and for better reasons as well. PC gamers get better prices, deals, more quality based versions of the same games, also alot more freedom to modify the games with our systems. Even though, i am primarily a PC gamer and i do game on console as well, i respect both platforms for what they are, I know the great advantages of PC gaming since it's basically the Platform that creates other platforms.
The funniest part is i buy and i also pirate and still i can proudly say that i mostly buy games on PC due to better markets. You can have a mid tier PC and still have more advantage as a Gaming system over most consoles or consoles in general. I love and respect Consoles for what they are but PC will always be King and there is no fair comparison in all honesty.

I think the "low" sales numbers for FF7 Rebirth are more to do with the fact you have to buy 3 games to get the full experience. If people are doing what I am doing it is to wait until all 3 are out in one package and get that.
And I quote low because 2 million is low in this day and age of ridiculous sales forcasts.

Rebirth isn't even doing that badly sales wise but the issue comes down to how much Square spends on these titles which is why they're disappointing. FF7 Crisis Core remastered did very well in sales mostly because it released on every single platform including Swich and Xbox
I'm sure Sony had paid them more than enough to make up for the poor sales. Otherwise, FFXVI also missed the sales mark as per a shareholder report. They keep on releasing timed exclusives due to Sony's money.

@@syeddanishanwer I may be misremembering it but I am fairly sure their CEO said about a year back that their strategy of taking Sony cash for an exclusive has been a failure for them. But I suspect they were still locked in for FF7 rebirth and maybe their next game as well.
Also, that 35% article is highly biased. It doesn't ask "do you pirate", it asks "Have you ever pirated". And of them, most of them are "I did once". Like me, I've pirated in the past... 17 years ago. Was a high school student, not much money, and really wanted to play Sims 2 with all expansions. Last game I ever pirated was... Resident Evil 4.. the original. PC release. Not even the remastered release, the actual original PC release. I stopped around the time I got a job.
So yes, I can be counted amongst the "35% of PC pirates", but my Steam Library is over 300 paid games, and I purchase all my games now. Haven't even touched piracy in well over 17 years at least.
True, most PC gamers experience that pirate phase in middle school to college, when they are broken teenagers or young adults with very little disposable income and can't afford to pay 50-70 USD per game, plus DLCs and whatever extra expenses (microtransactions) might be necessary for games to be playable.
Once they begin to have disposable income most PC players pay for their games unless again, you can't buy them in any store because they aren't offered anymore.
Like the first Avatar game where you can play as an RDA soldier, Ubisoft doesn't sell the game anymore so I only can get it from pirates at this point.

They also are omitting the fact of the matter that most people that pirate games live in countries that are in extreme poverty, where the games aren't even priced to their countries economy and also don't wish to spend money on a console that'll be shelfed within a few years.
If the games are being Pirated, it's for one of these reasons:
- Game has bad reputation so people like to try before spending money.
- developers make playing the game a pain in the ass with annoying Online/ third party launcher requirements.
- Game is WAY too overpriced for what it delivers.
- people who'd REALLY like to play but live in low income places.
At least we have games to pirate :)

The funny thing is that this trend toward releasing games on PC isn't going to stop, so eventually these console fanboy, early access chasing, game journo wannabes will realize that the audience they're trying to grow now includes the PC players as well, and they are tanking any legitimacy they might have had with that audience in the future (not that they had any to begin with).
Both Cyberpunk and Baldurs Gate were drm free on the first day. Both made money. Make GOOD game = people will pay for it. Mage trash = some will pirate it, others will not bother.

Most pcs are potatoes, thats why the most popular games are very old, because people cannot run any new games.
Not every PC gamer has a high end PC (I PC game on a lower end laptop), but having options on PC (including cloud streaming along with steam) is a complete net positive for everyone.
I currently game primarily on a laptop thats more powerful than a ps4 but less powerful than a ps5, and I've got a steam deck while I save up to build my linux pc. Options and customization are king
I started gaming mostly on my Framework laptop and my Steam Deck more than my actual desktop, more convenient for me

Granted I mainly play on my ps5, but I'm planning on getting a mid range PC later this year and in general if someone complains about options then they really gotta get their head out of the gutter. Not everyone wants to spend $500 on hardware that has limited options. I love my Ps5, but I understand why not everyone wants one.

Even then a middle tier PC or gaming laptop can move plenty of modern games in low quality graphics and you can cap the frame rate to 30-45 fps if you really need, something that for gamers with very low disposable income or countries with lower wages might be necessary yet allows them to enjoy games like everybody else.
Square Enix deserves every bit of this misfortune that comes their way imagine telling customers that they got to go out of their way in order for you to buy a product.
It'll be different if Sony brought Square Enix and they became a first party publisher that's one thing the game should have been available everywhere
Remember, the PS5 is backwards compatible with the PS4 and the only difference in the PS4 and 5 version of FFVII is the lighting, yet both are $70. Square Enix deserves to get Stadia'd.
There isn't a single PlayStation that can't play FFVII in some capacity.
PSP FFVII can also be played on PS Vita. PS FFVII can be played on all PS2/3 systems. PS4 FVII van be played on PS5 and PS5 also has it's own version.
The PlayStation official website even calls it the "Final Fantasy VII Saga" implying there will be many more retrograde re;birth;remaster releases (& Knuckles) in the future too.

Sony makes more money on software, so they'll go where the money is like Xbox do, fanboys are just in denial. Heck one of the biggest reasons gaming is so mainstream these days is because Sony saw the money to be made and branded their second outing as a cheaper DVD player to the general masses where more money would ensue and broke records, it's been on the horizon since the beginning.
Even SEGA started this in the Saturn era with day and date ports of games like SEGA Rally, Daytona USA and Sonic R/3D Blast.

@@_Just_John yo mate, there wont be any dlc. they already doing the 3rd game, which will release probably in 27. also i cant say how the pc port is turning out but its the same engine as remake so it will probably run pretty good except the dynamic resolution stutter but you can deactivate that if you enter "-dx11" on your steam game launch options. its a directx12 problem, besides that there havent been any problems in ff7s release, so your comment just seems really salty for no reason

I find it amusing how some console players refer to PC gamers as "poor", when the cost of my GPU alone could buy multiple generations of PS5 consoles, including the Pro version. The truth is, PC gaming offers a wider variety of games, including many from Eastern developers. So, I'll happily stick to my PC and enjoy all the unique gaming experiences it has to offer.
Conversely, my PC as a whole cost less than a PS5(New GPU, preowned everything else) and is just as capable. Also plays my old PC CD games from the 90's so I too will happily stick with my PC.

@@Dark_Mutant Consoles will always have a place, whether it be the community(Anywhere but PlayStation), independent scene(Dreamcast and PS Vita are great for these), or just to join where your friends are; there's a number of reasons. These all apply to PC too of course, but ultimately, it's all down to preference.
I still buy new Dreamcast releases to this day because there's some real goodies on there despite it being a 1998 console.
These days I'm a PC gamer, but I started on console and will always understand the value they have to many. Also the importance in some places.
Nintendo saved the US from the 80's game crash with Mario, who inspired Sonic, who helped sell the SEGA CD which inspired the Nintendo deal with Sony, which made the PlayStation a thing and gave us Sony Entertainment Interactive, which gave us bangers like Ratchet and Clank and the like, which gave us Xbox who saw the dollar signs and gave us Xbox game studios, and all these things gave us so much more variety and made gaming less of a niche overall. (for better or worse).

Since the beginning of 2022 I have purchased over 300 games. Not one of them was pirated. Maybe 2 or 3 were obtained for free legally.
Pc players buy more games and are more likely to have a backlog of games they have yet to get to.
And I'm not an anomaly. Pc players are more likely to be hardcore gamers who support the industry alot more than casual console players who tend to stick to just a handful of games they always play.
This is why games need to STOP being on one system, I haven’t played it yet but the first game was amazing and such, but Xbox and pc has MILLION of other players, Sony wants to see a increase, release on other systems or just be like “hey ps players get this game for at least 3 months before anyone else”

FF7 Rebirth only has a 3 month exclusivity on PS5 this time around (it'll still prolly take minimum 6 months though for a deluxePS5 and PC version), and Square recently stated they're sick of doing the single-console exclusivity thing.
Also consoles also get hacked(pirate!) to play for free , tho that goes later on in console life .

FF7Rebirth isn't coming to PC on May 29th. For one that couldn't happen as it's in Sony's 6 month excusvity deal. Secondly where in the world did you even get that information about FF7R. We know FF16 is coming to PC and that doens't even have any footage of the PC version improvments or a release date

I find it funny that people still use piracy as if it's a definitive reason as to why devs shouldn't support the platform, even though services like GOG thrive without DRM, console players still buy pre-owned games, and piracy can (in certain occasions) be a factor in purchasing more content down the line. I know several friends who used to pirate games to benchmark their hardware or try something new, and now own multiple copies of said games on multiple different platforms.
However, it would have sold more if they released on steam day one...Certainly a lot more then the nonsensical epic exlusivity the last time around. Edit: I also posit that Even pirated games may in fact lead to a legitamate sale if the game is good. Remember when full game demos were a thing and came with Cereal boxes?
I had to pirate palworld with my friend to get on the same version as him as he had the gamepass version and I had the steam version it has like no protection and works on official servers. I payed them money and still pirated to get around a problem that ps and xbox couldnt if it was a cross console problem

I think this has more to do with life and games costing more. I bought remake day 1. But video games don’t often fit into the budget these days. Especially at 70 dollars. I will play rebirth eventually when it goes on a good sale or when I’m no longer poor. At one point I played console for exclusives but today I play consoles for convenience so I’d rather Sony release games day 1 on pc and make more money. Maybe we could have gotten a days gone sequel if they had.
The last guy who had the screenshot I get he probably was like “oh 90% have atleast pirated” well yeah no shit I’m not spending hundreds of dollars to get a console that isn’t made anymore and a game that isn’t made anymore when I can just get the rom and emulate it.

My guy, I don’t even know HOW to pirate a modern game. I literally only know how to pirate old roms for ps2 and ps3 emulation which I would GLADLY buy if only Sony would SELL THEM.
there are multiple reason of why there are ppl pirating games, from not having money and etc to pirating a game that is very known to be a bad and broken port, but mostly they pirate to see if the game is good or not and if it was good then they buy it but ps fanboys talk like they dont try to find a way to jailbreak the console they have to download games for free, funny enough games sold more on pc even though you have ppl pirating

Keep in mind that launchers aren't the only way to buy games on pc third-party key websites exist. We dont know the exact number of pc users who buy keys from these sites, but if we take that into account, the number of pc users who buy games could be higher than 1.8 billion.
Resident Evil Village got pirated and played better than the one being sold on PC.

If games didn't sell on PC why in the world would both Xbox and Sony continue to sell their games on the PC platform. That doens't make any finanical sense to sink money into a ship and then expand that ship if it never makes money. The reality is that PC makes a ton of money and most PC gamers don't even know how to pirate a PC game and play pretty casually. It's a non argument debunked by Gabe Newell years ago.
Piracy is mostly a service issue. Of course there is a veyr small minority who are going to pirate no matter what but those people likely wouldn't have purchased the game anyways so it's not a lost sale. Sony at least understands that you don't make the experience worse for the PC customers who are willing to pay so many are even less likely to pirate

The best way to stop people from Pirating a game is to make it more easy to buy the game outright then it is to pirate... Putting DRM and bullshit in the game that only ruins the game if you buy it is not how you do that. I have been gaming for a long time I have paid full price for a game then went and Pirated so I can remove a shity DRM that was cracked a week before the game was even out.... PC gamers are the ones that keep the Market afloat with out us you dont get a shity sony play box
i only pirate games, that i can't buy anymore, or that i plan to buy in the future, but currently i have no money for that.
mainly i view pirated games as "infinite demo" versions of the game. if i like the pirated version, i will buy the real one.
but most of the time, i buy a game, realize it has DRM, like most ubisoft titles, so i pirate the game to play it without the DRM, knowing that i have at least one version of that game on my PC that can't be taken down anytime by a giant corporation... and most of the time, games without a DRM are runs better than the original product... but thats another discussion...

I play PlayStation. I’m not salty about other platforms getting PS games. I am salty about the fact that physical media isn’t (as in getting a disk with the game on it) a demand from PC players. At anytime steam can just cut you off from the games you’ve paid for. I know lots of PC players don’t think that’s the case but it is. Right now consoles are the only thing standing in the way of Ubisoft’s “all games are subscriptions now” future. Xbox can ban you from live and you loose All your digital games PlayStation too. ( or they can just remove them from your library for… reasons…) steam cut a whole country off from the games they paid for because of an embargo.
I buy all my “must have” games physically so that I keep them until I’m ready to sell them. We should all come together to demand ownership of our games!
It's also worth considering that, even if that study was entirely correct in 2016, the PC gaming market has shifted massively since then. The [Backstreet Boys Reunion Tour] forced a lot of people to stay home, and as a result, a ton of people had to find entertainment that they could participate in without leaving the house. Hence the rise of multiple new streaming services, movies releasing directly to said streaming services instead of just in theaters, and (drum roll please) a HUGE bump in the number of people participating in PC gaming.
The thing is, it's likely that because these are people who just started playing on PC as Something To Do while they were stuck inside all day, many of the land on the more casual side of things. Which is fine, obviously, play games how you want, my favorite game is not necessarily going to be your favorite game etc. but it's important to recognize that a more casual gamer is going to be much less likely to have a desire to pirate games, in my opinion at least. Less interested in participating in an action that those in the mainstream are much more likely to see as morally / ethically dubious, less likely to be familiar with how methods of piracy work even if they wanted to, and like Gabe said, likely to find that Steam provides a great service and you might as well just get the dang game.
Either way, even if that percentage was still accurate, like you said that is still not enough for a publisher to NOT want to sell on the PC since it still provides a bigger audience than every current-gen console combined unless I'm missing something in my math, but I'd argue it's likely that there are proportionally significantly fewer pirates around nowadays.

FFVII: Retrograde, Remake and Rebirth.

As a young man in the 90's I learned to build my own computers, and still kept 1-2 consoles around for the different game libraries, and when I was in a mood to play "console games". Now, consoles are basically PCs in a closed (and expensive) ecosystem. Nintendo has their IP, but those resources will have to be carefully managed to avoid the issue of IP stagnation (and a much smaller market to sell to).
