To put it in perspective, 20 straight years of not missing the playoffs is the longest streak by a single team across all major American sports. No other team in any sport has been as successful over a 20 year span as the Spurs have, not the Lakers, not the Celtics, not the Yankees, not the Patriots, no one. Let that sink in.

As a spurs fan, I was blessed growing up seeing the most consistent franchise in the league compete year in and year out. These last few years have been tough, but all that has been worth it to see this young man Victor Wembanyama in a Spurs uniform. He is a worthy successor to Timmy and David, cementing the Spurs as contenders for the next decade. His potential on the court is only outpaced by his maturity, competitiveness and love for the game of basketball. Even non Spurs fans should be happy that we all get to watch this guy play.

@@TheN-Guyyou guys have a lot of picks too, and some high upside ones. I can’t believe TOR traded a T6 protected 1st for Poeltl on an expiring, (after he turned down like 4/65 or something too) especially bc they knew they’d have to pay him at least near 20M/y. It’s not like they were a contender, or even a good playoff team…or even a good team lol. They were fighting for a play in spot! They sent a 2nd too.
It’s even crazier bc TOR drafted Poeltl pretty high in the draft, and traded him w DeMar for Kawhi a couple years in to his career. Full circle. Such an awful trade though, for the pick to be not only that lightly protected, but also protected for 3y. So even if TOR does hit in the lotto this draft, while they’ll likely be better next year, SAS will still have two more cracks at it. Imagine if they end up trading like pick 8 for Poeltl? Wild.
But ya SAS has rly adapted w the times. They weren’t a team that really traded a lot, didn’t seem like they’d be one to fully tear it down and rebuild. But they did, and yea they got super lucky getting Wemby…but they were really good collecting assets before and after that. Getting the assets for DeMar, hitting on non premium picks like Keldon, (Derrick White but that was before, Keldon kinda was too but w/e…they’ve always been great at finding gems in the draft) Vassell at 11 was one of the only good picks in that range beside the (in hindsight, though I was shocked he fell that far) obvious.
The Dejounte trade was great, sold at peak value. Those picks could be valuable, they seem very shaky. Obviously in hindsight Derrick White is worth more, but at the time it seemed like a nice haul. Just making sure they get high upside stuff sprinkled in too, like the ‘28 BOS swap and ‘30 DAL swap. Most likely they won’t matter much, but you never know.
Then they’ve kept their books clean. Keldon’s contract is good and descending, he’s not progressing as you’d like right now, but he still has potential and I think he will at least end up as a good rotation player. Even if he just ends up as a good 5th guy or even a 6th man, he’ll still be underpaid or fairly paid w the cap going up. And the Vassell contract is v solid. 5y, no player option, it’s structured perfectly for the TV deal kicking in in 25-26 and there likely being 10% raises for that year and the next couple at least…as well as when Wemby’s extension will be. As long as he stays healthy it’ll age very well.
I’m curious what they’ll do this summer, especially with a good lotto pick coming and possibly another w TOR’s…as well as plenty of $. I’m a DET fan and it’s unfortunate to have incompetent ownership, one of the worst things possible bc they don’t get fired lol. Gotta give props to the front office there, Pop, RC, and obv the owner for letting the bball people do the bball stuff. I’ll still never forgive Horry for that shot in the Finals, and who knows what happens if DET drafts Bosh, Melo, or Wade…but it is what it is. Enjoy having a historically competent franchise, bc ever since Tom Gores bought DET it’s been awful. Hopefully the SAS owner keeps it as long as possible and has a good successor. GL.

When you see how singular the Fisher .04 shot, and the ‘06 Manu foul on Dirk felt, it’s easier to see how us Spurs fans point to the ZaZa foul as such a meaningful moment in terms of who ultimately would’ve won the series.

The problem with that thinking is that it is based off part of one game. There are multiple examples throughout NBA history of teams being in the ascendancy early and still losing the series. The 01 finals is the prime example. AI dragging his 76ers to a win over the much more favoured Lakers didnt lead to them winning the title,, or even making it a competitive series. They lost 4 straight. Kawhi definitely wouldve made it a competitive series,, but ive seen people, Spurs fans and not, say his availability wouldve meant the Spurs definitely win that series. Thats just ridiculous

When I did a formulaic dynasty ranking on Reddit ("NBA/ABA "dynasty" Rankings, Part 4 (Dynasties)"), the Spurs were #1 by a mile.
It was mostly due to length; the Spurs were so good for _so_ long that it makes up for the fact that they won a single fewer championship than the Bulls, or even the larger gap between them and the Russell Celtics (which is made much narrower when I adjust for the number of teams in Russell's NBA). Curiously, the Spurs' dynasty got extended to '93 based on the methodology I used, because their one bottom-out year (1997) wasn't enough to end their run (similar to how 2020 for the Warriors wasn't enough to single-handedly end their run).

The 2014 Spurs team is arguably one of the greatest finals teams in history. They didn't have the best players at each position but they knew how to play as a TEAM from the starting 5 down to the 12th man. They knew their role & did their jobs well. I would put money on them in any 7 games series vs ANY team in NBA finals history. 96 Bulls, KD & the big 3 Dubs, ANY of them. Sure one on one the Spurs would be at a deficit in talent but collectively they could beat ANY of them as long as they had that hunger for vengeance. Funny how teams boil down to their best player in these kind of theoreticals but i honestly do not believe any other finals teams in history played team ball better and could not outplay that Spurs TEAM in a best of 7 straight up.

It’s simple. Make the all star game the ultimate pick up game. Do the draft live right before the game. Either make it a tournament of 6 teams, first one to 21 advances. Or two teams first team to 81 wins in honor of Kobe. Mic up the players so we can hear the trash talk. Also replace the dunk contest with 1 on 1.

I've been a Spurs fan since they moved to SA, where I lived at that time. The biggest reason why the Spurs organization works is because of Rodman and his ego. IMO Rodman was an embarrassment with the Spurs. I believe the Spurs realized that they needed team players who were NOT distractions and willing to learn their system. Over the years I've seen many players get traded away and probably for these reasons.
