This highlights defensive effort, since you actually got to see one-on-one defensive matchups way more. The offensive player still decided to shoot the contested shot. Nowadays, players give the ball up, team runs multiple actions in the same possession, and the floor is so spread now that a defender has to be able to guard all three levels of the floor AND guard their man while playing the coach's defensive gameplan. Even if you dropped Scottie Pippen and Rasheed Wallace in today's NBA, they wouldn't always get to showcase their defense because the player they're guarding would give the ball up, and probably run a play to empty one side of the floor, get somebody down hill, look for pin-downs, backdoor cuts, and open shooters, rather than just play one-on-one from the elbow.
