Yep, and I was there at The Warehouse in New Orleans when the MD&E tour made their 2nd World Tour stop in 1970,.... thank the lord for You Tube today,... cuz much of today's noise is rarely like the great music of 53 years ago.
One of the most frenetic, frenzied, powerful, soulful, energetic amazing performers ever!! There will never be anyone who could come close to Joe Cocker's epic legendary performances! You are very missed Joe, thankfully there are recordings of your jaw dropping performances!!
Bobby Keys is an absolute STAR! What I really love about this performance is when Leon comes back in with that unbelievable left hand in perfect time and we watch as a surprised Joe Cocker goes from an "Oh man, what's he doing?" to the second that the spirit of the music takes over his soul; it's palpable and irresistible, and here we are 50 years in the future and we can actually FEEL it too. Unreal.
Great description of the moment. I saw the tour at a Phoenix in-the-round theater. Also saw Joe a couple more times and Leon several times over the years. Those were the days, my friend, authentic as hell.
@@ksullivan728 Those were the golden days when every party you'd go to, not only did the doors get passed around but so did the guitars-it seemed like everybody could play back then. Nowadays the younger kids all are watching their cell phones when we were all studying our fretboards and listening to the greats play guitars, basses, drums and keyboards as well as great singers, songwriters, and frontmen of both sexes play with the spirit that these kids-all in their early 20's displayed in this video. It was the renaissance period of rock n roll. Those of us old enough to have lived through it were blessed to have been there. There is a fabulous documentary on Bobby keys called Everynight is a Saturday Night (,I think that is close, you can google it,) deep dive into his history. Fun fact...he shares a birthday with Keith richards
I recently bought the cd of Mad Dogs & Englishmen, what an amazing album, Joe sings with 2 things which are sorely lacking in the soul less crap that is called music today, he sings with HEART AND SOUL! Good on you Joe!
My senior year of college ... This was (and still is) one of the GREATEST R'n R' albums of all time! Great music and great memories! LEON RUSSELL! WOO HOO!
My first concert at 14 , my mom took me to see Joe Cocker… she loved him so much she would lay her head on the stage and cry tears of joy. We ended seeing him many more times over the years and I will always have that in my heart ❤️. God bless my mom and Joe Cocker ❤.
My mom took me to see the Mad Dogs and Englishmen movie, I was 10 y.o. at the time. Made a big impression. She also took me to see Gimme Shelter - double bill with Blow Up. And we went to see Jefferson Airplane because Janis died and couldn't make the concert. She also bought me my first Jimi Hendrix cassette.
I don't even have words. Such an incredible loss. I met him and his wife at an after party with the Cars in 77. A genuinely kind and gracious man and a lovely woman. My condolences to those who he left behind. My heart is weeping
I’m so grateful I got to see Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a week before my 15th birthday at the Swing Auditorium, had to be there to there to believe it, that stage had about 60 people up there & dogs & balloons & the sound was perfect 👍
+aussie gold People today would just focus on his unusual body-language and take videos with their phones and make fun of him. It's too much about appearance these days. Joe Cocker had more talent and soul in his facial hair alone, than most of todays 'artists' combined.
Oh God that was transcendent! Loved seeing footage of the late, great Bobby Keys next to Mr. Cocker. What a powerful, performance. Joe Cocker, you are so beautiful to me. RIP. Somewhere in the ether, there's one hell of a jam session going on...
I was 8 yrs old when I heard this and it shaped music for me for the rest of my life (so far). I can only listen to music performed with passion. And it's a glorious thing.
Saw the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour in Hartford, CT (Bushnell Auditorium) late sixties. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Leon was amazing. My ears were ringing for days.
I fell the extrenge facination of here again Joe cocker I have like 3 weeks in a row straight hearin Joe I started hearing Him since I was 12 years old I going to complete 62 this year the letter , delta lady ,feeling alrifht, with Leon Rusel and mad doge that was really good music.and the lirics were clean no ofensive words.
First album I ever owned as a kid was Mad Dogs and Englishmen...got it for Christmas and thought I was 'on top of the world'. One of a kind master of his art.
Cocker pretty much was the breakthrough star at Woodstock most everyone else was firmly established. A year later this tour. The Horn section became the Rolling Stones horn section, Half the band were the Dominos from Derek and the Dominos, Carl Radle, Bass the drummer Gordon anyways Bonnie and Delaney, Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell... what energy! I was there woohoo New Paltz College 1970 Summer free show out on the fields when Cocker and the Mad Dogs & Englishmen played.
I didn't know this was filmed. I had this album back when it was new and listened to this song approximately 326,000 times. Now it sometimes plays in my head on its own. Great to be able to see it! thanks for posting this. Great times and great memories.
I saw joe as up close as you could imagine. I club in cocoa beach florida held about 6 to 8 hundred people. the stage was level with the floor and Joe was totally on that night. we had an incredible time
Thank you Joe Cocker for so many years of great music all they way back to my childhood. Your music always took me back to my yesterdays and will continue to do so. May you forever Rest In Peace! They don't make music like the musicians during this ear of time.
Most don't realize the effect he had on our music growing up. He is a National Treasure. Got to see him in small venue in Davenport , IA a couple years before passed. One of the best shows I ever saw.
Playing Joe and listening to all his songs. Played a lot of these in my days as a drummer in the late 60's.What a great musician so sad to lose him. Just been listening to Mad Dogs in last couple of days not expecting his passing. RIP Joe
Reading his biography now. It w as just released e d a few months ago....written at the urging of Elton John. FINALLY! A real, thorough bio of this amazing contribution to the music world!
Why does this bring a tear to my eye? Could it be because I could have...and should have...been to this concert in NYC, and didn't go? Tempus Fugit.....:(
Im sure their diet kept going!!!!!!! The best rock and roll film of its time? pretty close. Great sound. great camera shots. beautiful ladys a many. Songs that keep on giving.
Leon produced a few songs on Cocker's album and gave him Delta Lady to record. Joe was tired after touring and stayed with Leon, in CA. Joe didn't want to tour, he was forced to and Leon, fortunately, was there to help. I got to see this band and it was awesome. Words can't describe how great it was.
tenparab Yes! You can see him looking at Leon over there...Leon was the "leader"...you can here him start up on the piano, and Joe had to start back up.
It's funny; he has that look for just a second before the music starts flowing through him again and he gets that possessed look in his eye. Luckily he didn't live in medieval times or he would've been burned at the stake for being a heretic during those "dancing mania" days...
Joseph Halpern I think he was pissed that he had to start up again but if he didn't he would have looked foolish , whatever, that song certainly rocked !!
I saw a lot of the rock greats over the years but I enjoyed Joe and Leon and this particular band as much as anybody. They really played some great Rock n' Roll !!
53 years ago, where the hell has time gone????And this music still nails it.
Good ride with this music ism 60
Yeah…we don’t have time….time has us
If you figure it out, for God's sake tell me.

I'm 74 and so grateful I grew up in this era of music. I'm still crazy from the 60's and 70's.
I'm 73, have my guitar in hand as I write this and I'm very pissed that I live in an illegal state and can't get weed
I'm 27 and I like Joe cocker and old music like this so it doesn't matter how old you are it because of how good the music is

Soundtrack to my childhood. My dad had this album and played it constantly. I'm 59 now, and still love it as much I did when I was 5.

Joe Cocker, you are the finest of Englishmen.

Thanks Joe and thanks Leon Russell and the Band
I love that look on Joe's face, when he thinks the song is over and the band starts playing again.
Yes, It's a remarkable look. What a visual performance on his face alone.
The reprise is part of the act
It’s because Joe is tripping balls and screws up the lyric and the writer Leon wants him to get it right, dammit
priceless
