This song provides a good enough reason to live. I'm 70 now and dying of advanced prostate cancer (with spinal mets) pretty soon. When I first heard this song in 1970, I was two years out of Nixon's Army, trying to study at Berkeley in the midst of teargas clouds. If I decide to take the legal / lethal prescription, Space Captain will be playing on my way out. Too bad we still haven't learned to live together; as the Thai say, "Next life, never mind!" Peace out.
i hope your transition from this life to the next is peaceful and full of love. thank you for your service in a war you should not have been in. space captain is even more relevant for todays society than ever. i was born in 71 and my mum says i used to rock back and forth and ooohhh and ahh in all the right places in my walker. this song and the whole album are part of my soul. my first words were joe cocker ! "we all forgot we could fly" i hope you have remembered how to. x
I'm so sorry Barry. Music is the thing that keeps life in perspective and let's us reminisce the past when the world was free and easy and a better place to live in.

Leon's Proud Blue-Green Top Hat was a gift from Gram Parsons and it was found in a Hollywood Thrift Shop, inside the brim was written "Al Jolson" the hat had been used in the original Talkie The Jazz Singer !
For me... this album and the Allmans Fillmore are the two best live albums ever!!! No overdubs.. No Auto Tune... Nothing but great musicians and singers..
Mad Dogs was a hippie commune on a musical tour, an experiment in utopian community. The leader was Joe Cocker, the space captain, and the mission was to learn to live together. That is the mission of all human beings. When we complete that mission we will fly up to the sky again. You are great Joe!

You’re more correct than you know, altho returning to the sky ain’t heaven. We’re all just aliens. Or, rather, the “gods” are aliens. We’re the experiment, and we’ve been at the 11th hour for a hot minute now. Most think we’re not gonna make it…luckily, a select few still believe. I’m starting to have serious doubts.
My planet was made a great planet with people like Joe Cocker Leon Russell and a way out there band called Mad Dogs and English man. Thanks for making my journey a great journey guys. RIP
Simply put - one of the best singers and entertainers of the the 60's & 70's. We were all "Space Captains" back then and still am at age 62. One of the best live albums of all time - Mad Dogs and Englishmen - double vinyl album. No one put as much emotion and energy into singing as Joe. He may be gone but not forgotten - his legacy lives on through the music of our time. No fancy digital effects - just raw R&B - so saddened to hear of his passing.
Don't ya know Heaven's got some great music going on with Joe and Leon there now.. I bet it's like " Ok all you Angels... I want all of you to put the hymnals away. With these two here we don't need no song books!"
I saw this very crew in Tulsa, OK. and I wept. I wasn't the only one. The magic, soul, love, and TALENT on stage was just so wonderful. I have no words that fit how moved I was. The whole building moved !!!!!! SO happy you hear it, love it, and, GET it. You appear to be a young person. This makes me a happy woman.
This album, “Mad Dogs and Englishmen” (1970), and the Allman Brothers’ “At Fillmore East” (1971), probably among (or maybe) the greatest live recordings ever!!! Still great after 50 years!!!
In my humble opinion, the absolute best live performances ever was 22 minutes of Queen at Live Aid, but that was a different decade. Can't argue with your other choices tho.

I saw Mad Dogs and Englishmen perform in Los Angeles back in the early 1970’s and Leon’s musical arrangements were tattooed upon my mind. I moved to Dallas a few years ago and listen to Texas gospel music on the radio every morning. Leon’s Texas musical roots are tied in there.
This has always been my favorite from the tour. I don't know why it didn't get more AirPlay back then. Probably because all the songs were so good. I mean this was the "B" side to the Letter on the single. Mad Dogs still the best tour ...I'm going to get the DVD just to relive this. I have the vinyl but it's pretty wore out. Rip Joe thanks for the music
Here in Brazil there were two shows at same time. Roger Waters at São Paulo and Joe Cocker at Belo Horizonte. I chose Roger Waters due to Pink Floyd be one of my favorite bands. Rest in musical peace leon and Joe, playing together in heaven.⭐️🌟🌠🌌⚡️🪐🌙🎩🎵

This is the Joe Cocker I remember. MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN is one of the greatest live albums ever. Spearheaded by the great Leon Russell.
Lynn Turman You're spot on Lynn. Good songs, excellent musicians, back up singers perfect, Joe Cocker the last piece of the puzzle.
Lynn Turman Definitely! I have it on vinyl and CD.
I just ordered the DVD of the film off Amazon. I remember my parents hauling me to a drive-in theater to see it.

Legendary. Great music, great people, musicians, J.Cocker and L.Russel.
Happy song. Happy-er times. Happy to do the "woos" and "ahs"...
This one was my favourite from the era and still us...absolute magic with Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge et al...
Thank you Matt Moore for the song, and thank you Joe for singing
it like no other!
