Incredible sounding motor, sounds like a NASCAR with a German accent. I was at Le Mans in the late 80’s and 90, the a sight and sound that won’t ever leave me is of the Merc coming down into Indianapolis and then blasting out of Arnage in the small hours of a Sunday morning
The more I watch this, the more I think the C11 actually surpasses the 917 in my all time top 2. I was lucky enough to be track/stage side most weekends in the 80's and got to see Group C, Group B, Group A, F2/F3000 and F1 perhaps at their pinnacle of speed without tech killing them. The C11 was incredible.
Was lucky enough to see these race at Sandown in Australia. I still remember it like yesterday hearing this thing come down the straight for the first time. Its a sound thats cant be understood till its heard live. Just pure hairy balls horse power. The silk cut Jags got their doors blown off that day. Just an amazing car and absolutely beautiful to look at.
small correction : actually 400kph flat, the WM Peugeot prototype in 1988 was clocked at 405kph. racing drivers had to be completely mental to do that ... at NIGHT !!!
Justus Raw me thinks the Pug did 408 and Kenny {Facebook mate of mine} did 405...but your damm right doing 230 mph + at night , I give them all the credit they are due on those roads back then, and even now....I will check with Kenny mate
Quadrant14 Justus Raw is correct, the WMP88 did 405kph(251.5533MPH) in the 1988 24hr of LeMans, the driver was Roger Dorchy and he set the LeMans speed record that still stands today because of the added 1990 Mulsanne Straight Chicane's 1 and 2. The C-9 Mercedes of 1989 did 400kph (248.5484 mph) driven by pole winner Jean-Louis Schlesser.
The difference between the WM Peugeot and the Sauber Merc was, the Merc did 400km/h every lap no problem do so.and the guys at WM duct tape all the gaps and inlets for less drag. But with no air going into the cooling inlets the WM gave up the ghost very soon after the Mulsanne speed run.
I miss the Group C days, the sheer diversification of cars/sounds etc… it was an incredible time for motorsport which will unfortunately never be replicated☹️
Anyway, engineers did a good job, putting "quite" short gears, if you are brave enough to call a 130 km/h first gear "short"... The ratio of every gear is close to each other.
It was designed specifically to race on tracks like this. Look at the list of tracks used in the 1990 World Sportscar Championship: Suzuka, Silverstone, Monza, Nurburgring, Mexico City. Fact is that, according to Martin Brundle, who raced against it in a Jaguar, the C-11 just had more downforce while maintaining the same top speed.
C11 virus is grove in me every time I look and listen this peace of racing art. Love Mazda, Porsche, AM, Panoz, ... but this car is every time deeper under my skin. Great video!
C-9, C-11, 787, xjr-9, and a little longer back in time the 917, these cars really sound like they are cars that are really on the edge and the Public wants to hear that when they go to a race. 2018 911RSR is not bad in that regard for now
When Mercedes make race engine, they extract all emotions and harmonics, they leave only hamers of hell. That is why those engines sound so brutal, sawage and demonic. I never ever hear any of their racing car to produce just a little of merciful harmonic. Don't know is that one of reason why I love them so. Such beautiful plain and functional, to me this is one of best racing car ever built.
SCshooter85 Nope, its DOHC. But its a torquy crossplane V8 with a similar exhaust arrangement to the american cars so it sounds like an american pushrod =)
Dimitris Varsos they are right hand drive so when they pit they can get in and put of the car faster since the next driver has to climb from the right side
That racetrack sadly lacks the long LeMans straight this fab car was built for, allowing speeds in excess of 400 kph. Must be frustrating not to be able to run over 280 with this greatest of racing car.
cobrafan427 they used the mercedes arena section in WEC and they didn't here, so wec would probably beat this car on this configuration of the nurburgring
Yes, it was a Group C machine. 950 hp in QUALIFYING trim to set a lap. 720 hp for the races. It was "mildly" turbocharged in comparison to the Porsche flat 6. Mercedes struck a great "middle ground" with just enough turbocharging and just enough engine size to meet requirements, make power and "save" gas.
Even it's "Sauber C9" name sounds so beastly, I instantly fell in love the first time I saw this car, was almost 10 years ago, and I still fear this saint beast of group c... damn I wish I could hear it in live...

Sounds better than that ! Sounds like Armageddon !!
Buba Ganoush hahaha
The sound is of a cross-plane V8
MUCH better than nascar lol
Legendary comment
This Group C, the F1-V10 time, Rally Group B, DTM of 80s&90s were the best Racingcars and Typ of all Time.
F1 V12 in the 90s and V6 turbo in the 80s too 😊
Can-am and F1 V12 too!
@@janosh4664 i'd say no to turbo f1 from the 80's but the 90s 3.5L spec engines were not that bad.
Don't forget as well: 4 Rotor
@@RosalieValentineCHENG 4 rotor was a shit engine always losing everything.
Todays F1 looks and SOUNDS like a bad joke compare to this!... This car is a fuckin racing beast! Awesome!!!
Group C racing cars (and GT1, GT2, and IMSA also come to mind) are like the military jets of the automotive..... Spectacular everything about them!

Perfection... Simply the perfect engine sound...
That violent Sauber Mercedes engine... In a blindfolded sound quiz, I would recognize it easily.
Every sound is so pure and raw audio excitement

The golden era of car racing
never liked mercedes's muscle-ish engines but this is just plain brutality
Monster Group C car along with the Merc C-9. Kenny Acheson was clocked at 405 kph on the Mulsanne at Le Mans, listen to that engine

I miss the old Mulsanne
These cars have to be more interesting than even F1 today. Brutal sound, beautiful design. Intoxicating.
I just love straight cut gears
Simply my favourite Group C of all time and to my ears the best sounding

Poor baby is hating that tiddly little track. Wants to be at LE MANS!!!! What a missile.
Anton Spilhaus Nordschleife is better, it has a nice long straight too

Back when cars had a manual gearbox
Mechanical manual

Pure sound of joy
Mercedes Benz always had the best sounding V8s and that's not debatable.

And secondly, most of the circuits turn clockwise and balance is better when you sit inside the corner.
Ohhh, and among clockwise circuits is De La Sarthe! Now I see!!! Thanks a lot!
The acceleration on this car is exceptional. Wouldn't mind drinking it on South African roads.
Watch out for potholes ;-)

Yes, it was a Group C machine. 950 hp in QUALIFYING trim to set a lap. 720 hp for the races. It was "mildly" turbocharged in comparison to the Porsche flat 6.
