Tony, you may not remember me but I’m Henry, you used to teach me guitar lessons (Little Chinese boy). Now I’m studying in a university. I randomly came across your video and thought you looked familiar. Well done to your success on TH-cam
Yep that’s a nice trick. As you know you can do the same thing with the E A and D string as the root to create those types of chords. It actually opens the neck of the guitar so you can see the different positions chords can be played and how they interlock.
You, sir, are a very good teacher! I've played for decades and yet failed to learn some simple concepts such as the one you so simply demonstrated... Identifying the notes on the E string for each chord in the song. Then showing a chord format that can move along that note sequence as an alternative to only using the "cowboy chords" on the first 3 frets. Thanks for sharing that...something that even I (lol) can learn and really enhance my playing.
A good way of teaching 10ths (suspension). Should really expand this into the relativity of the chord structures found within the key (which are minor and major and then the primary chord discussion). Inspiring lesson.
First time watching one of your videos here. Fender 12 string elec.~ac. here. Your technique of facing the camera directly in front of you simplifies the learning for me. I can easily follow both of your hands simultaneously. Thus, you're inadvertently conveying the timing as well. Most guitar learning videos are pretty complex. The camera is all over the place. Thank you so much! I'll be checking out more of these great tricks l===▪︎==:==▪︎==:===}l ✌️
Great! That tutirial was just enough to keep me from giving up. I will always enjoy noodling around with a guitar. But this was a real boost for me. Thanks!
Never give up!!! Music itself needs all the help it can get with all this modern trash programming peeps minds. Science says the sound vibration keeps going so…. For all is noodlers we can add something from the soul, just keep playing. Doesn’t matter if it’s an audience of one (ourselves )or many simply let go and enjoy. Strum away my musical brothers and sisters 😎
Really enjoying your lessons. Been practicing your A,E,D blues lesson and enjoying it - but this one has shown me how inflexible my left hand fingers are, will need lots of practice to master it.
Nice tip, thanks! It also sounds good if you hammer the top note on the 4th string and slide up G, Am, Bm and C with the open D string as a drone each time. I know a D technically doesn't go with the C chord but it seems to work.
Thank you gent. .. The sis my first seeing your videos and this us a great blessing ... it helps to think, understand and sound better... I subscribed. keep tunes pat
Nice ! I like doing the e scale on the low E string with E and G string. If you also include the D string you get a jazzy feel. And if one doees the E and G+B youre in deep Clapton land before you know it ahaha. Anyway guitar is such a good friend to have :)
What a useful hint that is. I've been a bit stuck as I tend only to use barre chords up the neck and they're not always easy within the rythm of the tune. Thank you. PS Don't let the name fool you, I've had it all my life but I didn't know Freddie.
Yo, learn the triad inversions on the center 3 strings. The 1-4-5 changes are right under you fingers without a bunch of repositioning (fill notes are also right there without changing hand position) and with the sparser voicing it’s a lot easier to find a rhythm that accents what the open chord dude is playing. I do lean more heavily on palm muting so the higher voicing come through as rhythm accents or chord stabs instead of ringing through….if not, the harmonic wash is a little strident, but that also helps find rhythmic centers easier for me. I haven’t played any songs in open chords for about 2 months now, (only if my buddy is playing his mandolin or we need a roto vibe sound there….) my fluidity in the mid-neck area has given me a lot of diversity, and the 3 finger voicings have helped tons with the tendon and arthritic issues a 64 year old guitar player has.
Not entirely unlike the "Better Man" chord of D/F#......... could be an easy three finger cord that doesn't involve the thumb and you can move the shape up and down the neck. For any guitar player who happens to know how to play the song the world I know by collective soul...... You already know this secret is possible..... House of found an amazing cover on TH-cam by Corey Heuvel of Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes and I quickly reverse engineered everything he was playing in about 20 minutes or so to find out he was using this similar trick with easy two-finger chords on E and G string only on the 7th fret to play a B minor bar chords in a much easier way that sounds more beautiful as well. Any intermediate guitar players watching or reading this I highly suggest looking up that cover version I mentioned and if you know how to play a little bit you will quickly be able to decode everything he's playing chord wise as well. This video is very accurate, this trick is a magic trick for guitarists. There are many easier ways to play lots of those hard bar chords, we have options!! Go forth and conquer that guitar!!!
Well, that was interesting. As an alternative to the 4th string, you could include the open 1st and 2nd, giving you G6, Am add2, Cmaj9, D6/9. Sound good?
Superb 😃 Thank’s for sharing, my friend 😊 The Lord’s love + grace be with you His Hope + peace, in Life, and beyond the grave Hope you are all well and resting in Jesus saving love + grace 😊 Warmest Love + blessing’s friends 😊
He is playing tenths. It’s the third note in the scale of that chord raised up an octave . When you raise the second an octave you get a 9th. Third becomes a tenth, fourth becomes an eleventh and so on.
Love the Eric Clapton signature Martin 👌 😍 👂 Noticed what you do better than Eric is you make use of your middle finger. Eric being in the top five guitarist in the world uses his middle finger 🖕 😳 to always flip the bird 🐦 😅😅😅😅😅😮😮😮😂😂😂❤
Are these nylon strings? Probably not, but sounds a bit like it, no? And so now your trick is that the fretboard has more or less linear intervals? Or I'm not getting it, must be some really tricky Hendrix stuff here ;-)

Of course I remember you Henry! That’s mad you are all grown up and in Uni! Hope you are well my friend 🤘

We will remember you Henry.
Great stuff Tony! My name is Doug, I live out in Denver, Colorado.
I just liked the video and subscribed, thank you so much!
This is the most wholesome thing I've seen for a long time, lovely ✨💕
Great. We, Bass players use often these beautiful blackbird-chords.
Yep that’s a nice trick. As you know you can do the same thing with the E A and D string as the root to create those types of chords. It actually opens the neck of the guitar so you can see the different positions chords can be played and how they interlock.
Yeah, it really helps to have simple ways like this to make more sense of all them frets up there :). I'm a simple man who likes a simple plan.
Stumbled upon this randomly while I was browsing DIY videos! Now I have something else I can play on the guitar! Thanks for the lesson!
That's awesome! I’m really glad you found something new to add to your guitar repertoire. Thanks for the kind words, man! Cheers!!
Middle finger for bass notes gives guitarists new and alternative chord voicing ❤

What a calm and fun groove for all levels to change it up a little. Its perfect little rainy day melody.
Oh yep, totally got that cozy rainy day vibe! Appreciate you sharing your thoughts! 😃

When you get to the 4th, instead of following the RYTHEM you were doing walk up 4 notes to the last. Reminds me of I’m never gonna love again.
Great! That tutirial was just enough to keep me from giving up. I will always enjoy noodling around with a guitar. But this was a real boost for me. Thanks!
I'm so glad to hear that, man! Keep up the great work! 🙌🏻

Subscibed. I must say that this video, is perhaps the guitar lesson that has giving me the most in a long time.
Thanks Tony. This old man has just learned something again. Who said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.🤪
Appreciate the step by step approach and demo. Going to try it. Subscribed
Thank you for the sub! I'm so happy to hear that! Keep up the great work man!
This works and sounds so awesome. Love your style of instruction.
Aw, that means a lot! Thank you!
Really enjoying your lessons. Been practicing your A,E,D blues lesson and enjoying it - but this one has shown me how inflexible my left hand fingers are, will need lots of practice to master it.
Thank you muchly Tony and Merry Christmas!!!! 🎅
Same to you! Happy holidays, my friend! Thanks for all your support!
So we can try this on a bass guitar too... lovely :)
It's nice to hit that D7 (10 on the D string) to get a nice leading chord back to G.
Nice tip, thanks! It also sounds good if you hammer the top note on the 4th string and slide up G, Am, Bm and C with the open D string as a drone each time. I know a D technically doesn't go with the C chord but it seems to work.
Sounds great! Thanks for sharing, love that creative approach!
Beautiful! Thankyou for sharing!
You are so welcome! Cheers!
That chord progression really brings "Doin't it right" by the Daft Punk in mind (except that Em chord is missing :p)
Bach to Blackbird. ❤
Thanks So Much for Sharing, can't wait to try it!
Hope you enjoy!!

Wonderful! That means a lot! Keep it up, my friend!
Beauty and elegance born in simplicity. Excellent lessons with great sounding results,
Many thanks! Glad you had fun! 🙌🏻
1:55 not gonna lie was thinking he was going to bust out Blackbird.
I was dying for him to do it after he said there are a lot of things you can do with this 😂
Cool! Thank you for explaining something I figured out on my own through trial and error, but never realized what I was doing. :)
Glad I could help, keep up the great work, man! 🎸
👏👏👏👏 Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Great lesson!
Thank. you very much!! 🙂
I learned these type of chord
shapes from Dave Matthews Band
This is one of the best ways to learn it
I love you accent as much as the chords! New sub here!
Yay! Thank you! Appreciate that man!
Similar process to playing "World I Know" by Collective Soul instead using Bm, D\F#, G, A. Thx for lessons!!
Always loved that song, but I always forget the chord voicings when I try to play it from memory.
Love ❤ the new chords/techniques you use here
Glad to hear that man! Keep having fun! Cheers!
I like it. Great lesson. Thanks.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the lesson! Cheers!
That's very cool, thank you for showing us!
You're very welcome! Happy to share!
Slash here. You showed me how to play years ago. I'm not doing too shabby. 😅
i'm playing 42 years and saw a lot of guitars, but i never seen 3 dots on the 12th fret.
Stealing 2:33 for my next backing track, haha... Thanks!
I've always wanted to learn this trick, because I've seen it forever.
Sounds like "Eye in the Sky" from Alan Parsons Project

Thanks Tony! I'm so glad you took that swim, great story.
Me too! Appreciate it man! 😀
That darn piano ad in the middle the guy is screaming at us- LOL

Sounds like Blackbird.
W0W! Thanx for sharing these chord voicings. They really sound great!
I just hit the Sub Button. Looking forward to learning from you!
Awesome, thanks for the sub man! I’m looking forward to seeing your progress!
Thats really cool, kind of like a moveable triad, thanks for the tip
You're welcome, man!
Thank you so much…
You are welcome!
Incredible. Lol, maybe the first time ive seen an "easy" chord trick that was actually super simple, but still very cool.
Appreciate it! Glad it lived up to the 'easy' name and still brought the cool factor. Cheers!🎸😄
Nice. Playing 10th’s like the great stride pianists of Harlem!!!
Hi Tony you used to give me guitar lessons decades ago and they worked, remember me Jimmy Page? 😊

If only it were true lol

I've been learning Many of Horror by Buffy Clyro and this is making sense

the famous ninth that resolves on the third.
I'd have less problem with the theory... if it were linked to sound :)
Thanks!
You're very welcome!
nice one brother...thank you 😎🫠
Thank you too! Cheers!
It's almost blackbird.

Awesome!!
I can see how that can work

You're very welcome!
Supercool Tony…thanks
You're welcome! Thank you!!
So u mean the 1st 4 chords of Blackbird by McCartney?
brill, thanks x
You’re very welcome! 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!
Well, that was interesting. As an alternative to the 4th string, you could include the open 1st and 2nd, giving you G6, Am add2, Cmaj9, D6/9. Sound good?
Magic!!
Nice…reminiscent of All Right by Christopher Cross.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night 😮. Oops sorry wrong song .but first sounded like it😮 cool lesson though 😎
Great!!😃
Thank you! Cheers!
only two strings. class
Adjust that a bit and you've got blackbird.
I heard that straight away
You can even get a cockatiel out of it.
My adhd brain wish this video was 1 minute.

What guitar/model do you play ?
Looks to be a Martin 000-28… EC…
@@aemk6129 I think you are right. Thank you !
When play chords like this what technique is this called? There must be a term for it
He is playing tenths. It’s the third note in the scale of that chord raised up an octave . When you raise the second an octave you get a 9th. Third becomes a tenth, fourth becomes an eleventh and so on.
Wow
.is this the chord shape Clapton seems to use???
I call these the Dave Matthews Chords

Whats the brand of your quitar bro
Looks very much like a Martin OMJM.
@@palaemon5359 Does doesn't it? I thought it was a 000-28EC then realised it was an OM. Beautiful guitars (mine's a 000-28).
