  • Hope this summary is helpful! I think the introduction to the Pentateuch as Narrative by John Sailhamer is genius and the commentary itself is full of fun biblical theological gems. I highly recommend finding a cheep used copy on Amazon. If you feel so inclined you can support me on Patreon below!

I was just about to begin "the Pentateuch as narrative". Thank you for the summary of the first part. It should make reading the book and processing it a bit more easy. By the way: I'm mindblown by the insights you shared and I look forward to reading the whole thing. Thank you.

I’ve learned just how sparkly of a man Sailhamer was

I took OT from one of his Ph.D students, Tracy McKenzie who also espouses the Canonical/Narrative approach, and it completely blew my mind!

Enjoying your videos! Just a small correction here. He was editor for NLT (not NIV) I believe. Not a big deal just FYI. Thank you for the book reviews!

Thanks for what you do. Unrelated but I was curious why Samuel is not considered the last Judge.

What page is the quote in "Meaning of the Pentateuch" you mentioned where Sailhamer says the point of the Pentateuch is the book of Galatians?

Really fascinating and well thought out summary, as usual. This may be discussed further in the next video, but I did have a question regarding Sailhammer's views on background information. Would the argument that background information being unneeded extend to historical context on the time the text was being written?
I was wondering because in your recent video on Robert Fyall's book on Job:
    th-cam.com/video/WQKbX7Grqbs/w-d-xo.html
You mention the Behemoth being understood by the people of the ancient world as a figure of unorder, and not an actual monster. This seems like the sort of thing that would require some historical background to understand.
Hope this question makes sense and I'm not misunderstanding you, or Sailhammer. As I said, really nice video, excited for Part II.

To be honest, this book sounds fascinating. With that being said, I am not entirely sure I understood everything correctly: Did Sailhamer think Moses wrote the Pentateuch, or was that just a figure of speech/irony?

have you ever read anything by Abraham Heschel, like "The Prophets" or "God in Search of Man"? It'd be cool to see your thoughts on his work if possible.

“Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom NEW treasures as well as old.” Matthew 13:52
I sure hope God continues to bless his Church with teachers instructed about the kingdom of heaven!
