My inner geek is jumping for joy. Great build!
That's very cool Paul, I missed this one when you put it up.
Makes me wanna go make Excalibre. Conan's sword is pretty cool too
Carl Jacobson Thanks Carl!
Daryl Garner-Savory There are a few swords just in the LOTR universe (if I was to make more for my Tolkien mad wife) that are similar to Conan/Excalibre in construction. Unlike Orchrist, an elven sword, they have a more realistic build approach. I think I'd use a completely different set of tools to make it though - maybe a tablesaw + taper jig to get the straight lines, and a router to carve out the fuller.
Now that's a lot of dedication!! Great sword!
Awesome project, loving the geeky crossovers. Jarrah contrast was a great choice.
this is awesome
This sword gona be my next projeck after making The hunting knife. You helped me a lot alredy
Very..... VERY cool! Really impressed with this!
If I could marry a sword it would be Orcrist. I am definently going to try this! amazing build man! I normally just build bokken, but I have been thinking about doing a more challenging project
I just love this its so beautiful, please make sting or glamdring
Parabéns pelo vídeo! Excelente construção!!
تحياتي لك من تطوان المغرب
Paul Jenkins (TheWoodKnight) This looks really good! I'm actually getting into this, and I'm thinking of selling mine. Maybe I'll post some videos of mine when I get the chance. Just as a pointer, Oak is a great hardwood, but tends to splinter when sparring (I realize this is more of a display piece, which is cool too). The best wood to use is Impact grade Hickory.
thats AWESOME!!! you should paint it.
Well done!
I had the same idea before I saw that vid.
that is so cool
Gonna use this for my survival skills
Could u make some Dwarven swords? They might be a little harder to make, but hope u could do it perfect. Also thanks for this tutorial it's awesome! :)
Really cool but i have one question, how thick was the wood that you used please?
this is so good
This is something I've wanted to do for a long time, and yours turned out great. I have a few questions, though.
1. What kind of printer did you use to make such a large template? Did you use a normal printer with normal printer paper and tape segments together to create a full template?
2. What Program did you make the template in? did you find it or make it?
3. Not really sword-related, but what was the font you used in the intro?
1. Just a normal A4 printer, printed over multiple sheets then taped/glued together. They only need to just overlap.
2. I grabbed the template from inside a sketchup model I found 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model.html?id=2d3520a3b2f1a519657980aba25ea557
3. Woodwarrior www.dafont.com/woodwarrior.font
Would you be able to make one of those for me? (For a reasonable price of course) I just lack the skills and tools to do it myself, and I really want to get my hands of one because they're amazing!
Thanks for the kind words but unfortunately at this time I'm not making these to sell. Shipping alone would be tricky, but I'm out of the relevant oak material and everywhere I can get to for the next month has closed down.
The good news is, however, there are a few on Etsy! www.etsy.com/au/search?q=orcrist
Great video. Very succinct, so it's a nice change from some of the unnecessary reiteration seen on other channels.
I am curious about the band saw that you use in the video. It looks similar to the Full Boar ones from Bunnings but I couldn't see a label. I want to buy a bandsaw but i'm not sure how much to spend in order to get something actually worth having.
At the time, I had an Einhell bandsaw. I don't recommend it, it gave me nothing but trouble. I have since upgraded to a Laguna 1412 and it works flawlessly.
what is the size of the sword?
I am making one right now
Love this video, wanting to make one of these swords for my son. The link you have for the template does not bring up a template for this sword, nor does the search menu in that site bring it up. Any chance you have the template saved elsewhere. Spent half the day trying to find a template to no avail, very disappointing. Thanks for making this sword and video, and thanks in advance for any aid in a template hunt. Thanks!
+Heather n Zak n Torleif Smith It.. does? Click through to my blog, then you can click through to the sketchup file I used. I just printed it from sketchup (or a screenshot of sketchup)
God I wish I had fancy tools like that. I have to use hand saws, chisels and files to make my wooden swords :(
What wood did you use . And do you have templates
is it possible if i could buy a wooden orcrist sword?
That cool
You think you can do a template for a straight kris
Do you have a video making Japanese swords ?
Forging with wood?
Make more props from movies!!
Shh, don't tell anybody, but I'm hoping to turn and carve Gandalfs staff before christmas.
Wow your amazing! i actually made the Orcrist myself following your tutorial. So thank you very much
Cool
OLY FUCK MAN THAT'S AWESOME !!!
can I get a copy of the schematics, I clicked the link for where you got yours but I don't know how to get just the individual sword or if a secondary software is needed.
+Brennan Vilcheck thats the file I used, I have no other.
+Paul Jenkins was it just 1 download then select the individual sword from the collection in the file while it's open?
+Brennan Vilcheck I think that's what I did, yes. It's been some time..
Thank you for the information.
Paul iam computer illiterate can u send me a copy of pattern for sword to scale thx
Are you going to sell this
Could you do Glamdring also?
LegoFan14 No plans for Glamdring just yet (might build a display cabinet first), but I've been planning to do Gandalfs Staff of Power for awhile
hey make me one
where can i get the templet?
can you send the link please?
hello I like your sword , but I can not print full size.
is it possible to envoiller me your plan so I print it full size.
Thank you
It is not.
???
You asked if it was possible to 'envoiller' (email? french 'to send'?) you the plans. It is not possible. There is a link in the article to the file I used. I do not have anything else to give you.
ok good ba okay
Its a awesome video but just fyi its called goblin cleaver
Actually its both. As well as 'biter'. Orcrist is the elvish name for the sword - elves being the smiths who created the sword. Goblin cleaver is roughly a translation into common tongue, as orcs and goblins are the same thing. Biter is the orc/goblin name for it. Gandalf (who has even more names!)s sword, glamdring, has the same set of names - foehammer for common tongue and beater for orcish. I think it orcrist is quenyan (sp?) dialect of elvish.
whats the pull saw in the background at 5:35. from Carbatec?
Its a kataba (japanese single sided, non-backed saw). Carbatec do have some, but I got mine from ToolsFromJapan www.toolsfromjapan.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=316_317_385&products_id=1430 for about half the price
Viking Code Oh nice. thanks for the link. ¥2,795 is a large number. But ends up being like 30$!
my hearing is terrible, what kind of wood did you use 😄
Tasmanian oak for the blade, jarrah for the guard.
+Paul Jenkins thanks! and holy crap you're fast at replying!
how long is your drawing?
where do you get templates?
valla süper oldu
Can i buy it and respond quickly!!!
Nope, sorry.
that's some skill but how is that "forging"?
+medo sam Its a joke man, a joke.
oh, man you should write that, cause people dont know. although it would be a HELL of fun if it was actual forged. the sword looks amazingly beautiful
Would using ceder be okay?
Cedar is a bit on the soft side (particularly if you're talking Northern White Cedar) - it'll be really easy to plane/cut/etc. If you plan to 'use' the sword in mock sword fights, it'll get dinged up, but if you're using it as a decoration it'll be perfectly fine.
Thanks very much! thats perfect!
can i have the bluprint
im making a 6 ft version of the orcrist
Kann i buy it? :D
sell it for like 100$ to Some one because all the work you did to make it
Einhell Bandsaw?
Yup. It was on clearance from a Dahlsens being converted to a Bunnings. Equiv of ~10-12" bandsaw. For the price I paid (~$200) there isn't much better and at the time was what I could afford. Very seriously considering a Woodgears wooden built bandsaw but thats on the backburner for now.
The Einhell unit has several issues (other than capacity)
- difficult to get enough tension because the tensioning knob is plastic.
- fence is rubbish and doesn't lock properly
- multipart aluminium fence is weak and not flat
- blade support arm thing doesn't use rack and pinion, just drops down.
Viking Code As in BUILD a wooden bandsaw? thats pretty epic.
I spotted them in a bunnings near me. Almost got it, but the fence put me off. 200 Skins though, i'd have picked it up too. Trying to get the courage up to go and drop some dollars on something from carba-tec...
Has the 10-12" held you back do you think? and what size would you prefer to have?
Glen H 14". 14" bandsaws give ~200mm cutting capacity which is useful for bowl blanks or resawing boards/panels. The Einhell unit says 170mm but I seem to remember thats actually really 160mm or slightly less including the guides. I *have* hit that limit before on some alder from a tree that fell down on our property. A larger table because of larger wheels would also be useful. I've hit the power off multiple times on the einhell with the workpiece because the table is too small.
And yeah, Matthais has plans for his bandsaws for sale, woodgears.ca/bandsaw/homemade.html
If I was to make one, I'd seriously consider going to 16". I think I'd want at least a 1.5hp motor to power that.
How long is it?
About 6-700mm long from memory
ok thank you!!!
Yo let me get
what wood did he say he used? He speaks too softly and unclear
can you mail it to me
+Jeffery James-Mathison no. Maybe in the future I'll offer swords up on Etsy.
