From an amateur woodworker and longtime fan of Nerdforge:
Trust me. ALL of the mediums/materials you have worked with until now are WAY harder than working with wood. Woodworking is easy and fun. You will fall in love. Don't let the tools intimidate you. Just be careful and practice. Get some chisels and gouges and practice on scrap wood. Your artistry will kick in and you will make some amazing things you never thought you could.
Ok, I will go watch the rest of the video now.
Also, you can make sanding drums in different grits using regular sandpaper. There are videos on how to do it. Rotary tools are great.

Very very impressive wands. I really like the second wand. Just a small suggestion, try and make them thinner. From my experience thin wands attract more attention, because it’s a bit difficult to make a thin wand. But other than that, your wands are absolutely FANTASTIC. The crystals are a really nice touch to them. Keep up the fantastic work.

  • @MrBaldypete1

Hi Martina, the wand looks fantastic, especially for a first time carve. Much better than anything I could do with wood, that's for sure. Wood is not my material. It doesn't like me! For the wood bark texture and colouring, maybe try adding some dark green, yellow ochre, umbers etc to give it a more "living" wood feel. When you look at tree bark in a forest, there's a fair few colours that make it "alive". A wand is a magical instrument, surely it should have some life. :) Well done again and I look forward to more videos from you guys!

I love the "barking" of the last wand, but it really needs some slow pulsing LEDs under the crystal to look really cool. Besides it may be time to think about a turning lathe to broaden your wood and metalforming skills!

  • @kargandarr
    @kargandarr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a suggestion, as far as dremels go, and that is that you might want to take a look at a dremel stylo. It uses a wall adapter for power, only goes to 22,000 RPMs but is smaller and easter to handle. It does use all of the fremel accessories that you have there.
I was watching another woodworking video earlier and saw another way to get the grooves to be darker. That person used a dark stain on the whole project and then sanded the wood a bit to lighten the higher areas.

Hey, you should really consider wearing protection glasses when using those resin pumps. My brother once used exactly such a pump and it was clogged a little. The resin came out in an explosion and he got something in the eye. It burned like hell and the doctor said he can be glad that he was wearing contact lenses which protected most of his eye, especially the iris. Especially the hardener part can be extremely aggressive to the eye

And here I am...just going out in my grandmother's backyard which is technically part of the local forest...to get my small scale DIY materials... I can get Oak, Maple, Birch, several varieties of Pine and Spruce...Walnut, and others...if I get a winter kill branch, all the better as those are usually nice and dry, but also dense...and because they're winter kills, they tend to stay in the tree until some sort of weather event a few years later exceeds the remaining integrity of the connection point...which means these are well cured branches more often than not...so long as they're not left too long after said event...

If you ever want to switch away from power tools, a decent set of rasps will be your best friend. You don't have to jump straight to chisels; I've been working pretty effectively on wand projects for years now using a set of wood rasps and files in various sizes. Also: the tools will teach you if you let them. You don't necessarily need to be trained in it to get good.

It inspired me to go in my garage that was about 38 degrees Fahrenheit this morning and build a 1/6 scale table for a diorama I am creating for a musical puppet video. It came out pretty good. Just need to age it for a spy episode ( yes all the puppets are really me. that's why I am putting it all in a video Can't express how hard it is to complete but I'm retired so it's fun and I have all the time in the world.)
You are very magical. Love the gold leaf and the darkness you added in the carvings looks great. Thanks for sharing You are so much fun...

  • @AzraelThanatos

Personally, for a "carved" wood wand, it tends to be a far better option to go to the hardware store and look for the larger diameter dowels from the carpentry section than working from a plank. It's a lot easier to get it into the final shape and there are several varieties of wood for it.
Also, you really ought to give your cast crystal a thin coat of a gloss varnish in the end, you get a better shine from it and it helps prevent scratches if you want to mess around with it.

I imagine her next video being like: " skjera bagera, it's me Martina. Today we're going to make a flying machine like da Vinci that will actually take me higher than my own house....." (With all the calmness in the world builds a flying machine and flies with it higher than her own house). Comes down again and says: " Hmm, to me this looks a bit flat and boring, let's see if we can do something there." (Easily transforms the da Vinci flying machine in an proper airplane and says: OMG I'm so happy I did that, it's so much better now!") 😁
Respect to what you do Martina, you have an amazing set of skills, and you handle that with such a coolness and kindness, whilst creating stunningly creative art.

Bass wood is also a good starting point for carving. Harder than balsa (which is like carving foam with a grain), but hard enough to hold its shape through years of your average bumping-around on a shelf.

Great work, Martina! I like the first one the best (although the second one is really great, too 😁).
Will you be making more of these? You had a lot of interesting design sketches that would look really good with different accents, crystal colors, etc. I would like to see a playlist of wand-making videos. 🙂

Your handmade Wands looks so Beautiful, I especially love your concept art of the wands maybe each one of them will represent your Tombs, Sry Tome of Water your gonna have to wait your turn, once all the books are done will there be writings (magical spell writings) in your books pages that way to give them like they were all written by sorcery?
keep up the great work Nerdforge. :)

At least you can draw very well. I can't even do that, so I'd first need to ask someone tips on how to draw. :)
Beautiful first (and second) try. Personally, I like the first one you made more. When you try again, I suggest having a more clear image in your head about the thicker part and don't be afraid to remove more material. I think this is why you thought it looked a little flat.

I see the finished design of the second one as something a Court Sorcerer would use, whereas the first one is more aligned towards a Field Mage, or, a spellcaster who is working primarily in the field rather than at the court of some nobleman. The inclusion of a blue crystal in the grip of the second wand is reminiscent of a sapphire, which is a decent enough binding crystal to channel magic through, but crystals are better used at the tip.
