    Forging Gandalf's Sword Glamdring from the Lord of The Rings and the Hobbit. Aleksey and his team create one of the most iconic Swords from this century by forging the blade from stainless steel and showing us a ton of awesome power hammer and hand forging techniques. They also demonstrate how you can do this work with a hand grinder if you don't yet have a fancy grinder.

    Correction: Gandalf was only the second owner of this blade. Even into the Third Age, the Orcs of the Misty Mountains knew the legend of this blade, naming it Beater, and they fled before it. It's mate was Orcrist, mayhaps borne by Ecthelion and used in his feared charge from the walls of Gondolin. But Glamdring was of higher honor, for it was the sword of King Turgon himself: lord of Gondolin, last of the hidden kingdoms.
    The inscription reads, in the runes of Gondolin: Turgon aran Gondolin tortha gar a matha i vegil Glamdring, gûd daedheloth, dam an Glamhoth. "Turgon king of Gondolin, holds, has and wields the sword Glamdring, foe of dread, hammer of the Orc-horde". Like Sting and Orcrist, Glamdring was forged with forgotten skill and could detect the presence of evil that it's wielder might never be ambushed.

    • @Hhjhfu247
      @Hhjhfu247 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What do you think could Forge Glamdring, Sting and Orcrist? I think it could be Maeglin since in Silmarillion there was a fragment when he found in mountains some special iron and then weapon of Gondolindrians(?) was much sharper and powerful

      Not THE most badass. Although Fëanor is on that list, fighting against I believe 7 balrogs before he died, Fingolfin is #1. He duelled against Morgoth himself and actually wounded him, before being killed

    • @alex.ann_der
      @alex.ann_der 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@morgothbauglir8687 Of course, Fingolfin is the fuckin owner of the Elves, the most noble king of the Noldor. Second, for me, it's a tie between Finrod Felagund and Fingon, both fought to the end, and Finrod literally killed himself to fulfill his oath to Barahir's house. But Turgon was a badass one, he showed up when nobody called him, helping a lot to decrease the losts, most of them survived because of Turgon's aid. And literally he brought the help from the Valar, allowing his daughter to marry a Man, rejecting Maeglin's wish, wich eventually led to Eärendil's journey to Valinor.

    "They chose to use a stainless alloy" ...oh.
    Still a cool build, looks like great workmanship, but personally I'm not a fan of stainless even if Gandalf's sword was "eternally bright." Still gonna follow Bellerophon, cause their stuff looks fantastic. EDIT: wait, some of their videos are just Russian-dubbed ThatWorks videos?

    • @lyravain6304

      I think it's a big case of "Cousin Illya, the westerners don't get our craftsmanship!".

      Most stainless steel are a mild steel.
      So that means it won't hold an edge and it will bend fairly easily.
      So this sword pretty as it is is essentially a glorified wall hanger

    • @tybertimus
      @tybertimus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lyravain6304 Stainless just doesn't have the potential to perform as well as carbon steels, assuming both are heat treated properly. I know the videos have gone the other way too...it just feels weird. But if it helps people who speak another language watch the thing, I can't complain.

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lyravain6304 Generally you either alloy a steel for the right amount of toughness, flexibility or hardness, or you go for corrosion resistance. You can do both somewhat but it's never going to be quite as good as a more appropriate carbon steel for sword use. Stainless is much easier to care for and it's great for kitchen items, even acidic foods won't corrode it easily, but a dedicated tool steel is almost always better for the kind of stresses a sword comes under.
      They did probably choose a better quality stainless alloy than the basic kind found on cheap Chinese knives and wallhangers, so it's likely not that bad of a decision.

    • @lyravain6304
      @lyravain6304 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks to everyone for your replies. I kind of thought of stainless steel to be the 'epitome' of steel, so I am happy to learn something new!
      In the showcase, the sword showed very minor wear throughout, I think the metal plate left a minor scratch on it, but nothing too extreme. I doubt it's a sword that would see realistic use anyway (we're not waging wars medieval-style any more after all), so I suppose the sacrifice in quality in favor of looks is acceptable, this time.

    • @calvin6718
      @calvin6718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If its just for show then you don't need to temper it because the blade won't be going though as much stress. It would also require less maintenance.

    • @GuitarsRockForever
      @GuitarsRockForever 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I thought you can do limited heat treat, but stainless steel is too hard and not springy enough, so it would more likely to break.

    • @lokuzt
      @lokuzt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yep, stainless is good for knives, but the very same proprieties that make it resistant to rust are the ones that make it non-flexible (and heavier, because of sword geometry). The crystalline structure of stainless alloys are so hard that it becomes brittle during quenching - another reason why the fuller has to be ground instead of drawn by forging, and why stainless is only good for ornamental wallhangers.

    • @MotherBiscuitLover
      @MotherBiscuitLover 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen some new cookware out made of stainless where the nickel content has been replaced with titanium in the alloy mix. I am curious to see if that new stainless alloy would make stainless swords viable. In theory the titanium should make it less brittle.

    • @CrimsonEclipse5
      @CrimsonEclipse5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@MotherBiscuitLover Titanium is brittle as fuck though IIRC. It's why we don't see swords made of just titanium (that and it can be pretty dangerous at high temperatures from what I've seen).
      @OP They could be referring to something like the Chromium-Vanadium alloy steel used in many Albion swords. It's not fully stainless but it's tough as hell and at least moderately corrosion resistant depending on how finely polished it is. As I understand it the lower chromium content compared to conventional stainless allows the grain boundaries to be stronger and thus tempering the blade will have an effect as the process of tempering is used to manipulate the grain structure of the material to produce desirable behaviour under stress.
