I disagree. The 60th cops a lot of flack from some fans, but I think it was relatively well done. I think if Russell had tried to do a Moffat style special, everyone would have been constantly comparing it to see if it measured up. I kind of like the slightly understated nostalgia bait of the 60th (minus the overt nostalgia for Series 4). Plus bringing back the Toymaker was great. I know ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ receives a lot of criticism for being to much like a regular ‘monster of the week’ story, but I get what Russell was going for. What better way to celebrate the show’s history than creating a high quality, very well written ‘monster of the week’ story, that pays homage to the experimental nature of the show’s history. I also really liked the bit where the Doctor nearly leaves Donna behind. It had me on the edge of my seat and almost in tears. With the Star Beast I had no real fears that Donna was going to die because I knew Tate was in the other episodes, but in ‘WBY’, with the Not-Thing double of Donna, I had a genuine fear that the Doctor was about to take her duplicate back to Earth and that would be the reason Tate was in the next episode. I was relieved that she wasn’t killed so unceremoniously, but I was genuinely petrified! It was a great way to prove that Russell was not going to continue the Chibnall era’s lack of stakes problem. The 60th definitely had its issues (like the kind of anti-climactic way the meta-crisis was solved) but overall, I liked it.
@@maddenedgeek7726 WBY as an episode by itself I really did like, didn't like Star Beast really and The Giggle was okay enough, better than Star Beast. I rather like the spinning camera work
My bumchum Richard said that he doesn't like it!!!!!
:-O
The camera had to keep moving because this special was one of several special 3D programmes the BBC produced at the time, using a 3D system developed by American inventor Terry D. Beard that made use of the Pulfrich effect. The technology required spectacles with one darkened lens and one transparent one; these were sold in shops to the public, with the proceeds going to Children in Need.
I wondered why it kept spinning, I hated it
Were the production team the same team that did Sylvester McCoy's run, the concept of the story is fine, it's being let down with the direction
If the Rani comes back in series 8 as a new incarnation anyone have a theory of how she would survive the last great time war?
Knowing the Rani, she probably wouldn't survive.
rockinrodney5000 bye bye ra ra
Imprisoned somewhere, ran for the hills who knows.
@@neptune04 I have a theory that the Time Lords rescued her from the trap she was tricked into a d recruited to work for them in the time war as her knowledge of science would be beneficial for them
I'm not sure the Rani would have participated in the Time War, so she could be out there somewhere.
Still better and more coherent than the cardboard monstrosity that is Chibnall's Jodie Whittaker.
Well I mean this is hot crap but at least everybody looks like they're having *fun* rather than sermonising to us every five minutes about the 'ism of the week' Jodie's characters do.
@@JeremiahEcks777 winner winner chicken dinner !
You clearly haven't watched it
@@JeremiahEcks777 your sound like a sensitive little anti-sjw

Very British lol #Whovian4Life
You can't beat doctor who but my giddy aunt this is very cardboard acting
It's only for charity
Still cringing but it was in 3D and for Children In Need.
Is there anyone who regards this as 'canon'? It would mean Dr Who and Eastenders literally share the same fictional universe. What a horrible idea.
This is AWFUL
Sri what was different? Didn't spot anything. It's was that same shite nonsensical story we originally saw. As for best special, does it really need to be said? Curse of fatal death, if course!
I've seen this umpteen times it's still drivel no proper story structure a whole Mish mash .
Absolutely terrible!!!
The only saving grace of this special is the behind the scenes footage. The rest is bloody awful. I remember watching it as a 21 year old and feeling utterly embarrassed for the program.
