***NEWS FLASH!*** Episode 1 of Dimensions in time was watched by 13.8 million viewers, and 13.6 for episode 2. By stark contrast Dr Woke "Destination Skiro" with RTD's the new politically correct able bodied Davros, made a pathetic 3.77 million views. Which means Dimensions in time is 3.5X better!! I personally don't think D.I.T was very good, but is way better than the woke 60th anniversary/Christmas special episodes with their dismal viewing figures.

Taken seriously, Dimensions in Time is the bad. But viewing it as silly charity special, it's fine. I mean, it gave us Six and the Brig together, and seeing Pertwee in live action one last time was amazing.
It's weird just how much older everybody looked. Some of them looked like they aged thirty years in only ten. Meanwhile Pertwee looked basically the same!
Fun fact, there's a novel where the Doctor says he had a nightmare where the "Rani trapped him in East Enders," so canonically, this special exists as a bad dream.

I’ve actually watched Dimensions In Time several times over…and yes, it IS every bit as bad as advertised. Oddly enough though, it’s that very fact that made it a curiosity for me in the first place and why I actually do rather enjoy it. It’s one of those “so extremely horribly bad that it makes its way all the way around to good” kind of things, sort of like watching a train wreck happen right in front of your eyes…horrifying, yet you can’t keep your eyes off it…😅
Last I checked, it was available for free on TH-cam and whilst I wouldn’t recommend it for the weak, for the extremely die-hard fan it can be seen as an interesting example of a moment where the show just really didn’t get it right on any account…a moment which can be looked back on, learned from and ultimately smiled upon since the desire for more Doctor Who wasn’t killed off completely by it…a fact which the 1996 TV movie, Big Finish and now both NuWho eras are a testament to.
True, Dimensions In Time IS awful…but I had fun watching it just to see how extremely bad it was. We can be thankful that this wasn’t the last we would ever see of Doctor Who and even admire what good things it DID bring about in its wake as well…to this day, the Doctor Who Children In Need sketch is a much-beloved event, with both of David Tennant’s Doctors being introduced using such skits. Dimensions In Time was the very first time Doctor Who was included in the fundraiser, so just sit on that one for a bit…something which is now a cherished tradition starting off with a such a horrific flop, obviously someone learned something from that. And I will also state that the special does, at the very least, deliver some fun moments. One of my all-time favorite Fifth Doctor lines comes from it…”and the companions came in, two by two…” 😅
All in all, yeah…it’s a very bad special…however, it’s still managed to find itself a special place within Doctor Who’s history, even if that happens to be a place of infamy. I personally recommend watching it with extreme care yet backing that with watch it anyway…it is a fun, if rather poorly done, part of series history and an interesting example of how the flame somehow managed to be kept alive during the “wilderness years” of Doctor Who…😅😁

I did enjoy Jon Pertwee's appearance on Noel Edmonds' show, even if the costume looks terrible on him. The Doctor's gag about seeing Noel in the year 2015 is probably the best moment of the special. 😋
But it did allow the Sixth Doctor to at last meet the Brigadier, allowing the Brig to encounter ALL of the classic Doctors. And I have to admit there are some fun moments, even if none of them follow any logic (or sense) whatsoever. If they had extended the special a little, like maybe two half hour episodes rather than twenty minutes total, and had time for a couple of rewrites, it might have worked. In the end, it really didn't. It was clear that they just went with whomever agreed to appear and THEN wrote the script to incorporate them. That failed. I'm convinced that's also how The Five Doctors was written, but at least Terrence Dicks knew how to write a Doctor Who episode.
Brigadier: "Splended fellow. All of them."
    Aide: "Them, sir?"

I wouldn't say it's as bad as the Star Wars Holiday Special, as this is only 13 minutes and actually keeps things moving, if just in a completely senseless way -- The Star Wars Holiday Special was almost 100 minutes of nothing happening. -- Having said that, however, I'd kill to hear commentaries or interviews of people who worked behind the scenes of both, as both are amazing train-wrecks, and the stories of how they got made, likely by aspiring Film/Video graduates who were disillusioned by the world of entertainment (at least slightly) simply by working in it.
If anything, I'd compare this to the awfulness of something like We Wish You A Turtle Christmas.

i remember hearing a few more facts about Dimensions in Time
JNT wanted the intro to be The Tardis appearing over the Eastenders intro but the BBC vetoed it and insisted on the Doctor Who intro being used
A Dalek was in it but it was removed due to rights disputes with Terry Nation
The cast hated working on it
Jon Pertwee called the script trash in front of David Roden without even realising who he was
All the other Doctors gave their technobabble lines to Sylvester McCoy because they couldn't be bothered to learn them, and McCoy was drunk while filming the final scene
Tom Baker had a question mark scar for some reason
Sylvester McCoy went on a rant on the Eastenders set saying "I don't understand why those BBC Enterprises people can't get us all together for nor money, but when JNT makes a few calls, we're all here with our boots blacked - doing it for nothing! There must be something wrong!"

On a couple of positive notes, (1) it did help support Children in Need that year, and (2) it brought Doctor Who back to the attention of the general public (any attention is better than no attention... sort of). But it was utter tosh.

@@HarboWholmes In 2005 I did an investigation into the progress of 3-D tech and was assured that the Chinese were almost ready to release a glasses-free version, as well as flat screen TVs you could roll up or paste on your wall like a poster. At that rate, by now we should've been watching the 2023 Children In Need special as a Whologram!

Also glad the BEEB were continuing the tradition of throwing out priceless Doctor Who props and memorabilia even a good two decades after they stopped erasing/trashing every existing copy of the black and white era episodes, that, likewise, needed to literally be picked up from junkyards and saved by fans.
    Some things never change.

This is so cringe. OMG, it's like JNT taking something I love and doing everything he could to make sure it would never come back to TV. I have never been able to sit through this whole story, even watching a review of it now is hard for me not to click away from. I live and breathe Doctor WHO, I've seen all the worst it could be before... Nightmare of Eden or The Web Planet, comes to mind... but yeah, nothing compares to just how bad this was. Why couldn't THIS be in the lost episodes? Ughh...

I only watched it a couple of months ago...
I had heard lots of people moaning about it, and I thought that it couldn't be as bad as that, could it?
    And the answer was... YES!!!
    It was awful!
It could have been a very good and interesting idea, doing a proper "crossover" with Eastenders. It was, however, a wasted opportunity!

Ah yes, the Star Wars Holiday Special of Doctor Who. Say what you want about Chris Chibnall or even Love and Monsters, but at least those had good production values. Dimensions In Time boasts practically nothing of any quality. At the very least, it was produced for Children In Need, but still, it’s trash.

This script was written by a lunatic, a barely literate lunatic, over the course of 30 minutes. That's the only explanation for the steaming pile of crap we were given as a "celebration" of 30 years. It was by FAR the worst thing ever put out under the Doctor Who name. The Timeless Children was a masterpiece of story telling, a compelling thrill ride by comparison. That's how terrible it was. I remember watching it on TV, I was gutted.

  • @jpofgwynedd3878
    @jpofgwynedd3878 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    ...nope.
It might be the worst of the classic era, but of all time?
    Nah.
A lot of the last five years has been pretty grim, alas - no, I'm not one of THEM - I simply, as a lifelong fan a little older than the show itself, found that so much of the last few seasons just plain boring.
    Too much running around.
    Too many music cues.
    Ideas which didn't go anywhere.
Dull characters and plotting... so much so that it felt like even they involved in the show just seemed to be going through the motions.
There was no passion or fire in it.
Jodie's last few episodes were more interesting, and a good setup, however...
Yet the Xmas Specials have been getting lamer for years.

It is a charity episode. They are all supposed to be cringe. Certainly in the 90s. They are nice call backs but never a propper episode. The BBC spent the previous few years sabotaging Who and it shows here. But the actors were good sports.
Also Peter Davidson rubbing his head frantically and shaking his elbows trying to convey mental power use is the funniest part to me.

You’re taking it way too seriously. And it was clearly never intended to be taken seriously. It was a big deal for us fans back then coz we’d been petitioning for the show to come back for four years. But that’s not to say anyone ever actually thought it was excellent or anything. It wasn’t. It isn’t. It doesn’t make sense. It never made sense. But it was fun. And it was new Doctor Who. Not sure modern fans could really understand how it felt for us back then.

The point is this was done for Children In Need. It was only 10 minutes long and they had to fit all the then surviving Doctors and as many companions as they could into that 10 minutes. There was no way in was going to be anything special. IMO it's unfair to criticise it.
