      @@tyler9703 OP did not specify "journalist" and Casey Putsch is a very well informed and well experienced individual when it comes to cars due to his racing background and his current work. So not being a "journalist" shouldn't be relevant.
      Also, his points about the (complete lack of) ergonomics of the C8 steering wheel are legitimate without having driven the car (hence why he hasn't talked about the car itself). He has seen and handled the steering wheel already and he explains very clearly why it's fucked. It's an extremely preventable and fixable problem but a serious downfall.
      But then, most supercar owners (corvettes included) are just old rich people who are just gonna flex and cruise around town, not push them around a track. He admitted such, so maybe making the best track experience car (even WITHOUT any compromise on other aspects) is not the most important.

    I said it before, I’ll say it again: the new C8 Chevorlet Corvette is what the new *Acura NSX should have been,* an affordable light mid-engine supercar fighter with everyday daily luxury car amenities and comfort. They aren’t very comparable as they are now, no, but they _should_ have been.
    The C8 Corvette is slated to be a modern Toyota Supra and Nissan GT-R killer that could also hang with the Porsche Caymans/911’s and Ferrari’s on the track. Something of a spiritual successor to the road paved by the first 1990 Acura NSX and 2010 Lotus Evora. Always chasing the base Porsche 911’s tail. The Acura NSX didn’t need to become another $150,000 Hybrid Supercar like the BMW i8 because to be honest, nobody really wanted to buy one. The BMW i8 and Acura NSX became the choice for niche hybrid nerds that wanted expensive flashy cars that were unique and literally nobody else bought.
    The Audi R8, Porsche 911 Turbo, McLaren 570S/540C, Aston Martin Vantage, BMW i8, and Mercedes AMG GTR all compete with the Acura NSX in the supercar market at that price. A Honda produced V10, a V8, or a twin turbocharged V6 (or supercharged V6) built on a much lighter chassis without the hybrid electric batteries would have been sufficient. The Acura NSX looks good, and is technologically advanced like the BMW i8, but they can’t justify the $150,000 price tag. Starting price at $60,000-90,000 is good, just to undercut Porsche.

      You cant really compare this to the NSX in my opinion. Both cars and companies are on two different levels. You pay $150k for virtually next to nothing maintance. But the c8 and Cheves rep in general with servicing. And when you say no one wanted to buy one, you should check the sales sheets again. Funny enough though, both companies are partnered together for future EV development. - a non honda fan

    When you have to mention many other cars to denigrate the C8, the C8 has certainly done the job right (for the most part). Understeer can be neutralized with camber adjustment and is mentioned in the owner's manual (for track use); understeer helps save the drivers that don't know how to drive (as well as they should).

    Mid-engine, low price, plenty of power. Yes, this car was designed to understeer on purpose.
    There will be so many people overdriving their ability in this car. If it was setup for track use, half of them would be in the hedge from power-on oversteer, or lift-off/snap oversteer.

      understeer on roads can be dangerous, but I get your point for sure.. It might make people hold off on cornering if they feel like they are going to go into the guardrail... Or is it too late by then and you are in the guardrail? as soon as it starts sliding you hit the brakes, which in turn takes away from the cornering ability and you lose all traction... I guess you could learn to drift around all corners lol

  • @MrCarCrazy
    @MrCarCrazy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +390

    Willing to bet that understeer is 100% intentional to keep the typical corvette buyer out of the morgue. I would prefer it err on the side of oversteer, but the attorneys seem to prefer understeer.
    Mid engine / RWD cars have a tendency to give you snap oversteer, which is a blast, if you have fast hands....and will kill you if you don’t. (I know I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know).

      @zigaveren3902 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @Litemix
      @Litemix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Chevy even said the understeer was intentionally built in because most buyers will never have driven a mid-engine car prior to owning one, and they wanted the performance to be safely approachable for those new to the drivetrain set up. It was also to not alienate their core base of buyers who likely wouldn't be familiar with the twitchy/ snap oversteer nature of a mid-engine car. Future performance models will rectify the problem without question.

    So, I happened to surprise my wife with a 2022 C8 LT2 with the Z51 package. We both had corvettes when we first met in our twenties. So, it was a sentimental purchase.
    I've been a car enthusiast since I was a teen. Had muscle cars, then bought my first vette 1962 at 21. It was semi customized, and it was and still is beautiful. It was a great feel to own, just not a great drive. but a head turner!
    So, she took delivery of the C8 in March of 2022. She now has 11k miles on it (two long road trips attributed to half that mileage). She has no hesitation pushing the envelope with it. We do track it locally and even get it on a drag strip with some of the muscle cars. I am not a typical collector as we own them to use and really enjoy them.
    We've had several other corvettes, and the C8 is impressive as its unlike any of the previous generations. The mid engine dual 8 speed clutch and much more chevy implemented changed the game for the corvette.
    Now it's a far cry from the two Ferrari's. A 2020 F8 Tributo & 2019 Ferrari 488 GTB! You're also talking about a hugh sticker price difference.
    We have 7 adult children and our 5th grandchild due soon, but there is still room for another car. I always wanted a Z06, so I have one on order, but a 2023 delivery is questionable. The vettes are just in my blood, but lean towards the Italian super cars.

If you mean “younger people” like teens but, when the boomers was about the same age as what you said “younger people” its the same or maybe worse. You know, most car enthusiast lingers to nostalgia, that back then cars are much better and they would defend that nostalgia to the hilt. I got a solution to the oversteer problem. It’s either slow down (or not press on the gas pedal), or the manufacturer should remake the vehicle with the rear wheels turning the exact degree the front wheels are (although I disagree on doing so since it’s meant for racing often rather than any other purpose) due to the short length and less weight. Blind spots? Small cameras can be added so the panel can show where you want to look at (with the manufacturer deciding to so).

      Except here’s the thing.....Chevy Camaro ZL1, Ford GT500, Ford GT, Chevy Corvette ZR1, Dodge Charger Hellcat widebody, Dodge Viper, Dodge Viper ACR, do I need to continue? Americans are fully capable of producing competent and competitive track cars, corner killers and Ferrari busters. Don’t let that assumption cloud your vision, or you may be chasing some Made in USA taillights pretty soon.

    To quote Jeremy Clarkson (again): It’s much better to have a manual when you are driving on a track for fun. Because then you are in charge and you have more control. But at all other times, a car with a manual gearbox is like a television with no remote control. A damn nuisance.

    I am 65, been going to the tracks buttonwillow and willow springs for the last 2 plus years, no prior experience, a friend told me about it, taking zo6, gt350 and gt350r for 35 plus track days
    The experience with manual is the bomb on the shelbys, auto on the z06 doesnt compare
    I believe if the average corvette buyer knew about taking their car to the track, and going as all out as you can tolerate, it would definitely change their buying habits
    Thanks

  • @racecar6312
    @racecar6312 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can make any car understeer if you drive it into a corner without power. It seems like these guys are really trying to find something to complain about. After road racing Corvettes for many years, I can tell you that you cannot evaluate over/under steer on the street. You need to go on the track for some high speed sustained cornering. I did enjoy hearing their feedback about the car, but the understeer comments are not accurate from a few 90 degree street corners.
    Take it to the track, trail brake to the limit into every corner, hit the apex with your foot on the gas, apply max power coming out. Repeat for a dozen laps, then tell me if it understeers, and we will have a starting point for tuning.

    love your reviews but i think you need more time in the vette and the ability to modify it as gm suggests for an advanced driver. speed phenom actually bought a car (seemingly an unbiased ford guy) and tracks, road trips, etc and has way better feedback than what you guys are offering. I get it, you have to be entertaining and are fishing for subs but a day or two with someone elses car isn't sufficient. Speed phenom has such a great format and tracks the heck out of his cars and street drives every day, he needs more subs.

    What is crazy.. Is the 991.2 GT3 lapped the Nurburgring in 7:12.. conducted by Porsche. The C7 corvette zo6 lapped it in 7:13.. with a manual. FOR FRACTION OF THE COST OF A PORSCHE. I would say the corvette is an American supercar and something special for the average person who doesn’t have $250-300k to spend on a car. Now it looks like a proper supercar. Kudos chevy. Kudos. Only drawback is the redline at 6k.
