How Can I Safely Fix a Wiggle Wobble Clutch Lever?

- I never noticed how cheap and wobbly my clutch lever felt until I rode a Harley Breakout. The Harley has silky smooth precise levers. No wiggle! No wobble! Then I got on my bike and YUCK! The OEM clutch lever wobbles up and down and just feels cheap. I thought to replace it with higher quality levers or a new perch but even then it doesn't mean the slop will go away. The forums are filled with reports of new and old bikes with sloppy floppy clutch levers. I want to fix it but it needs to be safe. It needs to be quality. It needs to be permanent. But how?

This was exactly the video I was looking for! Every other video is about doing a normal clutch play adjustment. I couldn't find the right shims though, so I ended up just very carefully squishing the bracket with a pair of vise grips and a rag protecting the metal. This seemed to work ok, too. You have to make sure there's a balance between binding the clutch and a very small amount of up and down movement.
I had a similar problem with my 1975 Norton Commando. I used a feeler gauge until I found the right thickness to take out the wobble, sacrificed a small portion of that gauge, drilled it out to accept the bolt and done. Thanks for the idea.

i was inspired to fix my wobbly clutch after watching this but i was too impatient to wait for washers so i took of the receiver and put it in the bench vice, gave it tiny pinch and the wobble is gone. nice video!

@@sstressfl that is a valid concern! I was worried about the same thing but i took it very very slow and checked the fit along the way.

Shudda used a feeler gauge to assess the shim thickness required. If the feeler gauge indicates .5mm go with a .4. Don't want to be TOO tight. Don't forget to put some grease on the pivot. Yes, McMaster-Carr is one helluva company! They have a vast level of supplies.
I think as well lubricants with grease good idea as suggested in previous comments. No point all the time keep buying the whole handle. Well done.

Another useful and understandable workshop video, thank you! For me, also the driver's seat has a 'backslash' and a noticeable but tiny movement for the passenger's seat. I'm glad to see solutions to the problems I am also facing.

@@laszloaffentaller351 mine moves when I'm not sitting on it. As soon as I sit down I don't feel it. I'm sure there must be a way to tighten it up.
definitely not a stupid mod! it's stupid we have to do this mod lol my clutch wobble is so bad, especially at lower gears... the rattle of the wobble is louder than the bike, at times.
My 2007 BMW has this. I just ordered new levers because someone cut them short in the past. if the replacement doesnt work this is my go to 👌🏻

some alfoil folded up on both sides of the screw, pop a hole through with screwdriver,,like new again
@@simby787 Folded up is the problem. You do not want something that soft. Stainless steel or brass washers are the way to go.

I was just doing the same today but my washer was a bit thick so I couldn’t, but now I’m gonna sand the washer and try again. At least now I know it works.
I dont really think about it too much anymore, but when I do its so nice that its not floppy. Simple good fix.
Great vid. I had a similar problem with mine. The friction eventually over time shredded my cable through that side to side/up and down movement. It seemed to be bent very slightly it's so solid I couldn't have got it in a vice I wrapped some tape round the piece the screw goes shredded in minutes. Even making a washer out of a credit card. Eventually I had to change the clutch lever and mount's completely. Even then sent the wrong cable. I will get some of those. Even if not perfect at least it's much better.
Nothing beats a true high quality mount and lever, but that’s what I was shooting for…. better :) Hope it fixes yours🙏
I installed Pazzo Racing levers on my gsx-s 750 2016 and my clutch levers is still wobling. I will definitely do this mods this summer !!
I think the real fix would require buying new higher quality lever perches. But this worked well for me for now and was much more affordable.
bought a 2008 R6 and clutch slipped after a couple days, kept slipping after shifting a few times. Was eccentric to realize was just the EXTREME lever play xD
My question is how does this happen? I bought a r6 and it has this same issue. Although my has some chepa aftermarket levers. Yours look stock
Mine are stock. After riding a Harley Breakout with precision feeling ball bearing levers I realized how crappy mine felt. They have always been that way. Loose tolerances allowed from the factory. A cheap brake lever and mount. They work but they are def cheap.
They should make that part of the lever adjustable, maybe even bearings in there. Mine is all over the place and has too much friction.
Definitely a lot of room for improvement. I imagine it’s all about price point.
Just fitted aftermarket levers to my Rebel and while the brake is fine the clutch side is really sloppy, I will be messing with some shims until it feels right to me.
Sloppy levers make the bike feel cheap. Its worth the effort :)
Hey! I have the same problem on my Honda Shadow. I couldn't tell, did you put a light layer of grease onto the shims? My thought is grease is needed so the clutch lever moves freely
I have the same problem with a 2nd hand scooter I just bought. Going to the mechanic because I don't know how to disassemble lol

Wait a minute... the wobbly lever is different than clutch engagement. Thats a completely different thing. If your bike is stalling when you have your clutch lever pulled all the way in, it means you need to tighten up your clutch cable.
I don't like bikes that much but the one you have it's really nice

Uhhhg! Inspect it closely. If its bent bad you should replace it. Aluminum does not like to bend then bend back. It makes it vulnerable to breaking. But, if it simply pivoted you can loosen the mount bolt/clamp and adjust it back to the correct angle. If it's floppy loose up and down, you probably stretched out the mount. Youl could try to squeeze it tight, but then again you're risking a possible crack in the aluminum. It'll have to be your judgement call based on what it looks like. Any concerns, you should replace.

Mine Wiggles back and forth and not up and down. The clutch still engages but there's like almost an inch of play from fully extended or not engaged. It doesn't return all the way back to flush. Is that a worn clutch cable?

A cable will stretch initially, but then stop when it settles in. As long as the cable is not frayed, it's fine. I think you need to adjust your clutch. You need some play at the top to make sure it's fully engaged but it sounds like yours is wayyyyy too much. I bought a bike yesterday, it had a wobbly clutch lever, took it back to the dealership and they said “it’s supposed to do that so it doesn’t snap”
That makes no sense lol it should have a tiny bit of play but not way crazy loose. Like I said in the video, I rode a Harley and the levers were so precise! Made my bike feel like garbage. I took most of the play out and they feel amazing now 👍

I’m here! I just searched for brass shims on the McMaster sitevand I found a page of shims. On the left you can select brass. I’ll have to update the link soon. I’m traveling right now but will update it when I can. Thank you for the heads up.
@@sstressfl Aahh finally found them! Turns out the site is much easier to navigate on a computer than phone. My specific bike looks like it needed a little bigger od and like .02 or .03 in total shimming so I went with the .01 beass 3/8" shims. Fingers crossed!
i just got my first bike a couple days ago, it’s a 2011 honda cbr250r. my clutch is wobbling up and down like the one in the video. this may be a dumb question but i’m new to the motorcycle lifestyle and i don’t want to mess anything up. i noticed there’s a lot of area between the connector of the clutch and the bolt, does this mean i’m completely missing a shim and need one? any help would be nice, thank you
Congrats on your first bike! Help me understand a little better… do you mean the clutch lever is loose like in the video and you can visually see a gap like your missing a factory shim?
@@sstressfl yes, that’s what i mean. i’m not the best with explaining :,) there is a gap and the entire clutch will move up and down on the bolt. does this mean i should order a shim? it didn’t come with one so i’m assuming when the guy before me replaced the clutches, he didn’t replace the shim
@@KayleeB-xd1yh Typically when you replace a clutch you don't need to do anything with the lever, but because its a 2011, its possible the lever is simply worn and needs fresh shims to tighten it up. Sounds like this solution could work for you. But maybe it would be so much better to buy new levers! Just make sure you look for good quality, good reviews. Also joining a Facebook Group of people with your same bike will help! You can get good advice from others who have gone before you :)
8 months later, do the washer seem to be holding up still? Is play increasing at all? I purchased a brand new bike and the clutch lever is all over the place, both vertically and horizontally. I think some play is safe, but I just wanted to know how it's been so far. Thanks for the video!
It feels like it loosened up the tiniest bit initially but it hasn't moved since "break in". Feels great and it's no longer annoying :)

Hey Tiago! It has been flawless. No bindings. Just smooth operation. I suspect it'll be just fine for years to come. Eventually I might buy new mounts and levers, but at least this took away the urgency and I saved my money :)

Sorry about that. I intended brass. But they are stainless. I was in the brass section, changed the size and it matched me with stainless steel. They are flawless, smooth, strong and have been working well since I made the video.
My 06' Classic Kawasaki Vulcan has a wiggle clutch. Would you happen to know what causes this?
If you mean the handle wiggles up and down it just means there is too much tolerance between the lever and the perch mount. Some play is needed or it would bind. Most of the time it’s just a cheap lever manufactured with a lot of slop. The Harley I rode had a ball bearing pivot point and it was luxurious precision 😎
My 2021 doesn't have hazards but it looks as though I see that red hazard switch on yours.. I'm jealous. I was told that only the European models come with the hazards

Quick question my clutch lever is like loose so when I put it in 1rst gear The bike moves a bit but when I tighten it I loose so much power in the engine I have a rmz450

This issue is just a wobbly handle. What you’re describing is a clutch adjustment. Every bike has an adjustment method and it’s usually very easy.
@@sstressflI have my r6 on a lift but as I pop it into first the rear tire moves without me releasing the clutch at all . As well as the second gear looking the same .
@@matrixskater3674 When the rear tire is in the air its normal to have a little spin. So if you dont feel it tugging when youre on the ground you dont have to worry about it. Also, you should have about half lever release before you feel the clutch engage.

The other day I tried to ride my Harley Dyna without earplugs and without my full face helmet. I found out that my clutch lever rattles and I can hear it over the sound of the bike. The solution? Just don't ride without earplugs LOL.

Why do the levers get wiggly?
It usually comes that way from the factory.... i didnt notice until I rode a Halrey Davidson Breakout ($20,000 bike) and its levers were precision dreamy silky smooth with no wobble of any kind. Then I got on my bike and it felt like wobbly cheap garbage :)

@@sstressfl it's a 1988 but it was a police bike before then someone tried to make a horrible rat bike I stripped it of its "add ons" then added a new head light and turn signals I might get you handle switches too. But yah a work in progress
