    This is a Korean movie. Apparently the original concept was “don’t change yourself for others.” I think the English translation didn’t capture the nuances of the other language.

      Also, rock on for being okay with how you are ^_^

      Yeah, it’s interesting how stories will usually have
      Conventionally hot girl but with a quirky personality.
      She learns to love herself and ends up with the guy or whatever, but she is hot so it kind of lessens the impact. Bottom line, she’s hot.
      Conventionally hot girl who teaches the not hot guy that inner beauty is what matters. Again, it’s ironic because she has outer beauty. Kills the purpose.
      Conventionally hot girl who wants to be loved and respected for who she is. An important lesson, but she’s hot.
      These are all good things to learn, and conventionally attractive women DO need to be respected for who they are and deserve true love and not just superficial attraction.
      HOWEVER, the bottom line is that the woman is always physically attractive. It’s like people are afraid to empower women who don’t fit those beauty standards.
      It’s refreshing to see a female character who already loves herself and teaches the male character to love himself too.

    I like that she likes her normal body, and that hiding it comes not from self-hatred, but from self-preservation. She uses the traditional beauty to her advantage, but it's not like that's actually who she cares to be. That seems to be what makes this film different from others with similar "inner beauty" messages.
    Instead of the whole "you're beautiful because you're insecure" idea that a lot of media tends to have, she's beautiful, and she knows she's beautiful. That difference also then highlights the attitudes others have about traditional beauty as the problem more than just her own sense of self worth.

Playboys (or playgirls) are a great example of this where they hop from person to person not knowing the personality of who they are with but only going for those that can offer them something. As a Korean preparing to be an animator, this movie was one I never believed would've been made in Korea. While it is a kid's movie, it never went to the boss baby type 'we only want toddlers to see' movie most animations in our country have. I stopped watching Korean animations because I don't wanna see another kid's transformer type show or the same Kirby(without any sense of lore or cinematic adventure) type all defeating superhero show. It was boring. Then this came out, I had small hopes and my standards were low. I was aware of our country's beauty standards so like any other person, I watched it thinking it would be a princess diary type.
    I left with my cousin screaming over how the dwarves were super hot. Also about how Snow white is like really pretty in both forms, I would love to have her as an older sister friend
    Edit) some people seem to think I hate Kirby and I don't. What I meant by
    Kirby(but without any lore or sense of cinematic adventure), I meant
    Kirby has lore and amazing cinematic adventure. It was to describe how alot of Korean animations directed towards children often have these 'Kirby' type protagonists, chatacters that are so overpowered compared to the challenges they face. But unlike Kirby, these animations tend to lose any sense of interesting lore or adventure that pleases the eye.

    I love how she doesn’t actually think any body type is prettier, she simply compares the benefits and hardships connected to each body type and declares that her original body is the one she’s most comfortable with. She doesn’t condemn being skinny OR fat and thats something we’ve waited so long for. All bodies are beautiful, but all bodies come with different benefits and hardships.

    • @sethtfp2373
      @sethtfp2373 3 ปีที่แล้ว +190

      damn, she really swapped up a completely healthy body in which she could eat anything she wants without health risks and could never become decrepit and old, for an increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Thinking about it now, it kinda relays a weird sense of entitlement for *some reason*
      Then again, I guess this is assuming that she doesn't have an increased weight naturally, not as in "she's fat because she ate a lot because of her dad ate a lot and therefore genetics", more like people who are that size and actually can't help it, that appearance being just how they look even when they are in good health. In which case my sarcastic paragraph from earlier is irrelevant

    • @decentgrocerybag4003
      @decentgrocerybag4003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +548

      @@sethtfp2373 I understand your point and it’s a totally valid theory. However, I think the likeliness of being unhealthy and fat is the same as being unhealthy and skinny. The shoes were only supposed to give her beauty, not necessarily health or strength, and her previous eating habits probably remained to some extent. I have a similar body to hers but I’ve been underweight my entire life. Diabetes and heart disease may not seem worth it, but neither does lacking the energy and muscles needed just to stand up. It’s very important to have a perfectly healthy body, but it’s harder to reach than one might think.
      As for entitlement, I assume you mean that it kind of praises fat and ignores skinny? That happens a lot when people discuss body positivity. I cannot speak for everyone, but as a skinny person who has been met with such comments of prejudice, this is an incredibly big step for the better than most other art and media that bring up body positivity. Like I said at the start of my post, she doesn’t really condemn being skinny. She makes it really clear that fat and skinny both have advantages and disadvantages and picks a side based on her OWN preference and familiarity. It’s not perfect and we do need to be more inclusive in the fight for body positivity, but comparing this to something like Meghan Trainers “All about that base” it’s enough for now.

      @@decentgrocerybag4003 I completely agree with your point, and I hope I didn't come off as though I was saying that "largeness" is necessarily negative. what I was more trying to point to was how easily this message can be misinterpreted. I agree that the end goal of the movie is to support inclusivity and acceptance and that we could all do with a little more. However, I worry about Red Shoes reassuring people at unhealthy weights that it's ok to remain in that state when in reality it very much isn't. Malnutrition is one of the more serious problems facing society today, and I wish that the movie also discussed self-improvement, though I realise this expectation is unrealistic and would likely get them in bad hr situations.

      They all have traits of Neotny (?), which are all very common in Disney 3D films because it makes characters look cuter. But, I do agree, they look particularly Asian.
      If you're a fan of K-drama as well, it's easy to pick out the expressions of the characters. Compared to more Western animated films (who am I kidding, I'm talking about Disney), their expressions are a little more muted as opposed to how they are expressed in Korean media (I don't watch any other media, so I can't genuinely say if it's like that for other Asian countries).

      It doesn't hurt to make more chubby characters that love their body esp nowadays. And I think the movie itself helps not only with being seen normal when you weight different but also with just looking different - body and face-wise (the fairy having a "witch's face" etc.).
      I don't think saying to an overweight person they are healthy when they're not is okay, same with too skinny people. But what I do think they shouldn't be treated different because of their looks. Some people are just passing through a phase, some people have health problems and can't help it, some people are just healthier on the chubbier side. And we all have stuff we can't change in our body. The thing we can and should change, however, is how people treat other people.

    I genuinely feel bad that this movie didn’t do so well, and the news talking about the poster definitely didn’t help it and made it worst. I definitely hope it gets more views because the animation looks fantastic.

      With the budget being just 12 million dollars it could have very easily made a huge profit had it gotten an American release.
      Initially it would be low because small studios can't market like Disney, but word of mouth/twitter could have given it a big boost afterward.

    I feel so bad for the creators of this cause the movie is just so beautiful but because of some dumb advertising it completely flopped.
