I predict the American version will have potty humour, pop cultural references, the latest pop songs, and add a dance party 'cause studios here don't know how to end their movies so they rip off Shrek.
i like that snow white’s changing in appearance is clearly about all beauty standards because it’s not just her weight that changes. she also becomes taller, her eyes become bigger and change shape, her nose and lips become bigger, etc.
it shows that her being viewed as more beautiful wasn’t JUST because she was more skinny, that her weight isn’t the only thing “holding her back” from being what society perceives as beautiful.
I Think that was just to make her look fatter
Yeah, her appearance is dictated by a lot more than her weight. Which makes the overreaction to that poster kind of annoying. It's really not that offensive. People getting mad about movies is becoming the deadest of horses.
Just watched the movie and:
1. Snow White is an ABSOLUTE _QUEEN_
2. I love Merlin, his arc is beautifully done
3. Arthur is a delight, love his frienship with Merlin
4. Definitely in my top 10- no, top _5_ favorite romance
5. I want to shake the hand of whoever wrote the dialogue cause God
6. The above applies to the voice actors as well
7. You missed your chance on having a 7th point because seven dwarfs

Kissing booth2 sucked so bad, the acting was also bad. Overall a terrible movie, only thing that would make it a little better was if she would have ended up with Marco.

This is a Korean movie. Apparently the original concept was “don’t change yourself for others.” I think the English translation didn’t capture the nuances of the other language.
Knowing the little I do of Korean culture, that seems like an especially important message
Damn it, I love that message so much ❤️
Well, also because Western media prefers questions in advertising material.
"What if... Dinosaurs still roamed the earth." Or something like that
That makes sense
Yeah, the company said they’d take a good look into their translation department
@@trevingrayek1671 Yeah localization team screws everyone over
For this being a Korean movie, it's absolutely beautiful. It's cause Korean standards are very high, they fat shame like hell has no tomorrow, so to see them embracing and doing this sort of self-love appreciation, and acceptance is very beautiful to me.
I am slightly overweight and I might not do things that other people enjoy, I know how people feel about me but I'm completely comfortable with who I am. I'm learning how to accept myself and better myself and loving yourself is one of the hardest things to do sometimes. This is an amazing movie because of its story, animation, and message. The promotions did this movie a great injustice.
Edit: I hope whoever sees this is having a great day and if not, don't worry, It'll get better. Oh yeah I also fixed spelling
Yeah. Over the years, I've honestly become more jaded about Asian countries' cultures, namely how they seem to discourage individuality. This message of accepting yourself is very healthy, and I hope it helps some of the younger generations come to realize they can't keep living like everyone else because it's unhealthy.
Also, rock on for being okay with how you are ^_^
(Not saying Western culture is better, of course. We could do with a tiny bit less individuality, at least to the point where we aren't encouraging selfishness and pointless competition.)
Beautiful comment ❤
I think Korean beauty standards are at the very top of the list for beauty standards. I mean lets be real, they evolved to the point that their sweat doesn't even smell. We are like neanderthals compared to their beauty and intellect.
"By making her attend my birthday party," is SUCH a good line and nobody is talking about it. Made me cackle.
Well, considering how insufferable the prince is, I’d say that’s a pretty horrible punishment!
Since Gyro from the 2017 ducktales reboot is (and will ALWAYS BE) one of my absolute favorite characters, the prince would probably unironically be a comfort character for me.
All of my comfort characters fall into three categories: nervous guy, psychopath/complete asshole, and voiced by Ben Schwartz.
Good movie: bad promotion

“You are horrifying. But that’s a good thing. When you’re ugly and someone loves you, you know they love you for who you are. Beautiful people never know who to trust.” -Drax the Destroyer

in retrospect fat people have it good in life while ''beautiful'' people have a hard time knowing who to trust
Who is Drax?
Drax wasn't stupid... He's just... Unique
As a Korean, I’d like to point out that there are some HIGH beauty standards in Korea. The fat-shaming poster may have been relatively okay back then. Obviously, the high beauty standards have fallen enough for people to understand why that poster was kinda messed up.
I’m just saying, don’t get TOO mad at messages or beliefs of different cultures without some heavy context and cultural knowledge.
calling culture prejudice doesn't change anything
Well It was Tess holiday that shared it so take it with a grain of salt. This is the morbidly obese woman that said she's anorexic. She's always looking for a way to be a victim I cannot stand her at all she's so freaking annoying comparing black people to fat people like that's no where near the same thing.
Just Bc it’s a “cultural belief” doesn’t suddenly just make it okay. Yea things are different there but those “cultural beliefs” are what lead so many people to starving themselves, and believing a healthy average body is “still too big”. People die from things like that, and a lot more than you would think. We don’t “lack cultural knowledge” we just don’t lack basic morals and common sense.
Edit: I’m not insulting the culture and Koreans just to make that clear, I was just pointing out that blaming something that’s simply morally wrong on culture doesn’t make it okay
@@tubmop66 serious question do you stand by that with other things that's considered morally wrong in other cultures? Like if a culture eats people for some reason or cuts the clitoris off of baby girls so they will never feel pleasure.
@@tubmop66 btw is not trying to start an argument I'm just genuinely curious if it's only this you feel strongly about or other things too
I think the reason why the curse wasn’t lifted for merlin was because he didnt accept himself but when he kissed her, in her true form, not only did he acknowledge her true beauty but also found inner beauty while accepting that being overweight, fat, short or whatever doesnt make you ugly in the slightest. He found beauty in being a dwarf so it wasn’t the kiss it was loving himself.
Seems like a movie that critiques south Korea's strict beauty standards.
Funny that it was made in South Korea
I’m sure that the main two characters were made to look like kpop idols on purpose
Raging Cyborg bc a lot of koreans know the unbelievable beauty standards and hate it too.
I was randomly scrolling through comments, and I just want to say -- your PFP is beautiful; is that an Indian Roller Bird?
Korean beauty standard is horrid.
Anorexia & skin bleaching are still considered beautiful in SKorea
Just like that one quote say
*_"Never judge a book by its cover"_*
Or in this case
*_"Never judge a movie by its marketing strategies"_*
Yeah but this is like, if there was a new book that came out and the cover showed something racist, sexist, anti-LGBTQ+, etc. I wouldn't read it because it would be offensive. It's not just like the book looks boring or long, which is what the quote refers to, you know?
thats what marketing is FOR though. it's supposed to give you an initial premise, an idea of what you're going to be watching
Agony Aunt then they should learn how to not suck >:(
You kinda have to judge the marketing, that’s why you have it
well i mean... There was a book called "story of my sad h..." So... Yeah. Don't judge the book by the title/cover/advertising strategies
I loved this movie, and loved how Snow white was represented. She liked herself the way she was, she didnt care about her weight. In fact, she used it as an advantage, because she was weaker while using the shoes! Plus she is so damn cute! I WANT GIVE HER A HUG
Seriously, like when I first saw the two designs for her side by side I honestly thought her original design was way prettier compared to when she wore the shoes
For the record, it was “dwarfs” until Tolkien (a linguist) decided he preferred “dwarves.” Most later fantasy authors followed suit, but by that time, Disney had already called its movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Now both are acceptable, although “dwarfs” has more of a fairy tale feel while “dwarves” has more of a fantasy feel, IMO.
Tolkien's is more correct.
Leafs -> Leaves
Dwarfs -> Dwarves
Leafs
the reason her magic body looks like a Kpop star is that the korean beauty standard is very uniform, she's meant to look like the most traditionally beautiful korean girl
It’s sad how Korean standards of beauty are very Eurocentric. Pale skin, round eyes, not above 6 feet (for women).
@@halfdemonprince It's not Eurocentric really? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying beauty standards are a good thing, but a lot of Asian groups are shorter, and many Korean people do have paler skin. Again, not defending the stance of "look this way or you're not pretty" But some of the things you mentioned aren't beauty standards, they're just common traits of the ethnicity.
It is sad what they do to these groups if they step out of line.
Hell there was a HUGE scandal when a kpop girl and guy dated and the girl was fired.
@Apollo Sebaztian You were admittedly quite intense, but I do get where you're coming from. I'm half Asian (Japanese specifically.) And it can be sort of frustrating to hear that I'm not a "real" Asian person because of my eyes or skin tone from people who have no idea that a lot of us do have paler skin and wider eyes.
I mean, it makes sense that the protag girl of a Korean movie looks... well... Korean. No?

IT would be nive to have a vilian who is conflicted. Like she's on a tear when her shoes are stolen, but then she mellows out when she finds out that it's her stepdaughter that she _actually cares about._ It could end in big emotional way with either a selfish sacrifice to take the shoes back (wehere she is visibly pained by what she feels she has to do) or a selfless sacrifice to give the shoes away (a "family matters more" redemption arc).
I'm not gonna lie, snow white in her original form looks like she would give the biggest hugs and call you sweetheart :')

And that's just it. The movie might have a great message, but the original marketing was absolutely fat shaming, and for a lot of folks it's hard to wash that taste out of our mouths when it's so commonplace.
@@Rampala no it wasnt
It wasn’t fat shaming people just thought it was because they are stupid
As an overweight girl I unfortunately also had negative views of this movie, I had seen some marketing and watched a video talking about the plot that I assumed was based on the actual movie and not just what the creator had perceived from the previews that they had seen which unfortunately turned out to be the case. After watching this video on it I would actually love to watch it and I think it's actually on Netflix where I am, I had not watched it before because again, the preview they show on Netflix paints a different picture of the movie.
It’s such a good MOVIE ugh. I love that it was actually featuring a delightful and good message and surrounded the idea that beauty is not indicated by size. Like, especially within general the views of Asian countries socially regarding thin-ness to the point that other countries L’s are 2XL in most Asian countries, it was honestly kind of revolutionary.
It's infuriating when stupid marketing department ruins a movie when they promote it.

They say there is no such thing as bad publicity, I beg to differ now

Essentially modern day society inflamed by social media (and demonstrated by the clipse the actual media)
Nobody takes a molehill and turns it into a mountain like the hyperbole riddled, hypersensitive world we live in now.
This movie is a perfect example of "Don't judge a book of it's cover." Judge it for yourself.
That's true in two ways 😂
You can't blame people for not wanting to see this movie though. It's not the same as judging a person for their looks. Why would anyone want to show their kids something like that if they can't guarantee its got a positive message?
but thats why books have covers. TO JUDGE THEM.
One problem money
But if the cover isn't at least decent, you won't give the inside of the book a first glance.
Especially not if there are an abundance of books/movies
I love this movie because, even though I’m the average weight for my age and traditionally “skinny” I still sometimes feel like I’m getting too big or that I need to get rid of some weight, this movie and others like it help me realise it’s okay and I can love myself no matter what
Amen to that.
I watched it with my parents and learned how harsh their standards are. It personally helped me accept my passion for art and movie-making (as opposed to my parent’s wants). My dad literally said in the log kiss scene “it won’t work cuz she’s not actually pretty.” 😭 I HOPE they got the message at the end. Honestly tho, I don’t think they liked it or cared much from what I could tell. It made me realise that, though I love my parents, I’ve been living on unrealistic expectations my whole life and that I need to make my own choices, regardless of how my parents or other people see me. 🫶✨
Um… So Yeah. this movie is not leaving me EVER. 😂🤣 Supporting it all the way. TwT ✨
I’m Korean, it might’ve been bad translating bc if u directly translate the words into Korean it would’ve been like “what if people didn’t see Snow White so beautiful anymore”
is it ironic that a movie about not judging a book by its cover was judged by its cover?

I felt this movie fell into the same realm as “Leap!” Or “Ballerina”. Like I remember seeing the trailers a few years back and thinking “oh yeah, looks pretty good, when does this come out?” And then straight up, NOT HEARING ANYTHING FOR YEARS! Then it just pops up suddenly.
Awe I really enjoyed leap c:
I remember looking forward to Leap! so much. I even remember being so excited when the movie was in my local movie theater. Thankfully, my family and I never got around to watching it in theaters. And I say thankfully because when I watched it on Netflix I was disappointed. It would've been so much more disappointing if I had spent money on tickets.
OMG YEAH like I knew about sing afew years before it’s came out... that wait killed me
I went to see leap/ballerina as soon as it came out, but I get that pain but with that movie that follows prince charming on an adventure with a female knight
Ballerina was an alright movie, it just had too many "show don't tell moment".
I watched this without knowing much about it at all, and I had never heard of it. I watched it two more times since, it's a great movie! And as someone who spent much of my life being quite overweight, I really appreciate the real message in the movie. My (real) friends have said I'm beautiful now, and was beautiful then. Plus, a side message (separate from appearances) that I saw in it, having worked hard to lose over 200 pounds, is that magic won't fix your problems or change who you are inside.
Being someone who is a bit bigger than most, I appreciate how she likes how she looks, it normally doesn't happen in movies with a bigger character and I love how it's about inner beauty of both males and females.

i’m glad they didn’t go the “girl thinks she’s fat and ugly and learns to love herself to get the hot dude” route and instead had the hot dude have to be the one who learns to change
It's a nice surprise
Yeah, it’s interesting how stories will usually have
Conventionally hot girl but with a quirky personality.
She learns to love herself and ends up with the guy or whatever, but she is hot so it kind of lessens the impact. Bottom line, she’s hot.
Conventionally hot girl who teaches the not hot guy that inner beauty is what matters. Again, it’s ironic because she has outer beauty. Kills the purpose.
Conventionally hot girl who wants to be loved and respected for who she is. An important lesson, but she’s hot.
These are all good things to learn, and conventionally attractive women DO need to be respected for who they are and deserve true love and not just superficial attraction.
HOWEVER, the bottom line is that the woman is always physically attractive. It’s like people are afraid to empower women who don’t fit those beauty standards.
It’s refreshing to see a female character who already loves herself and teaches the male character to love himself too.
Yeah, I was predicting that.
I mean if VA complained about the poster as well, I began to be skeptical about its fat shaming being the fault of the marketing.
Not sure but part of me think about a premise of mocking body shaming (besides the Yokai anime where an “ugly” girl made a deal with an evil Yokai to be beautiful).

Lmao who said that quote in the first place
I was surprised nothing from the original teaser in 2017 was in the actual movie. I remembered thinking I can relate, and if I could I would totally honestly, masquerade around town, if I owned a article of clothing that could magically alter my form into something more desirable without having to work out I would.
But I liked the way it was teased honestly, because after a long day of “faking it till I make it” being “the boss” and seemingly well put together, I go home, shuck off your pants suit and tie, I hang up my classiness, manners and refinement, and you let it all hang out. To me that was attractive and relatable. That was accurate. So I was waiting for that moment where, Snow White would take off her shoes and at least one of the dwarves would catch her in her natural form.
i love this, because its kinda how i’m feeling after coming out of a really bad flare up wherein i was pretty bedridden for a week and lost loads of sensory stuff, and as a result i lost so much weight, but want to be back to being myself since being bony is uncomfy to me now and i really dont like being able to feel all of my bones whenever i sit down or stand, and people were treating me more kindly because they could see my skeletal structure and i looked a lot weaker!
I don't know how many times I have to say that marketing matters. The worst thing is when a good film fails because the marketing portrays a movie wrong.

Probably because Cats had such a horrible display/movie that people actually want to see it
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this video - I had never even heard of this film! I simply had to watch it after seeing this video, and it really is far better than what those initial ads and promos would have you believe. Far, faaaaar better. I mean, yeah, it’s definitely aimed at younger children, the script and overall flow of the film felt a little juvenile, but altogether it was a pretty enjoyable and wholesome watch! ☺️ would definitely encourage my little sisters to watch this. Such a shame this film never got the (positive) attention it deserved back then. Someone definitely messed up.
"hahaha I get it, I don't have legs" I love how you could just put that over joe from family guy and you wouldn't be able to tell it's not from the show
"I don't care about your height or what color you are." HIT ME HARRRRD
Fuckin' cringe, that line is pandering so much to the overtly sensitive. People shouldn't expect to be liked or loved by everyone in society.
@@jf7730 People also shouldn't have a preference over things they can't (or don't want to) control. It's stupid, wrong and unethical, if you don't like someone don't let it be because of physical attributes that define who they are.
@@dabrionheath1642 You want people to defy their human nature. It's a natural instinct to have preferences and yes, that includes having preferences over superficial things. I don't agree with picking on someone for things they can't control like height and color for no reason but it doesn't mean that everyone has to nor should be expected to like or feel attraction to that person. If the issues or flaws CAN be controlled or fixed but they choose to not do so, people don't have any obligation to accept or pretend that those controllable issues or flaws are ok in their personal view. It's not stupid, wrong, or unethical to not like people for whatever reasons you may have nor should anyone expect to be liked by everyone.
@@jf7730 somebody still shouldn't be judged by what they look like. Everybody deserves respect.
@@jf7730 it’s one thing to have preference but when you’re going to mistreat people because of things they can’t control then that’s just stupid mate
The fact that it’s a South Korean movie makes me understand how that poster was approved. South Korea is known for being extremely fat-phobic and heavily emphasizes being skinny as being beautiful.
There is a majjooorrrr thing against being even slightly a tiny bit chubby, let alone "fat" so it isnt shocking knowing its from south korea. Over there its shameful to even be americas version of skinny, its all about being petite
@Sierra Lorraine Barrett body type does NOT always reflect your health. Many people have perfect diets, exercise, etc and are considered fat by at least American beauty standards. Then there's people who eat junk food all day and lay around, but they're skinny. (By American beauty standards) So don't assume that someone is healthy because they're skinny and vice versa❤️
@Sierra Lorraine Barrett sometimes its just your body type. i've been overweight my whole life but im in great health but i dont lose much weight when i work out and go on diets. my cousin have been almost underweight his whole life, no matter how much he eats. he's in great health as well. body types do not reflect your health. when we say "being overweight/fat is okay", we dont mean "being unhealthy is okay", we just want you to love your body and yourself because mental health is just as important as physical health :)
@Sierra Lorraine Barrett just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist..
Pointing out fat is bad ain't same as bullying ppl for it.
Ta da
That makes sense. Unfortunately...
Thank you @Saberspark. I legit paused this video 6mins in so I could find and watch the film unspoiled. I'm so glad I did 😊 I was also caught out by the marketing and didn't watch it at the time, but it was such a fun take on the story. If you've watched any Korean romantic comedy, you'll see all the tropes from those movies. It's a fun experience! All they had to do for the marketing was ask: "What if the real story was not what you'd been told?"
I feel like if they had said " both of these girls are beautiful but society says one is and one isn't" would have worked better
There's so many comments like "but she doesn't look THAT overweight!! She is actually cute!!" like... you missed the point lmao
Yeah I agree lol
People are beautiful when overweight, but the character didn't seem overweight to me either. She just seemed chubby/fat, which is perfectly healthy.
Tbh if your over weight just workout to lose weight so you dont get critized about your body atleast thats what i did
@@beatm6948 The comment goes for people trying to excuse or justify why they think she is beautiful despite the fact she's fat or chubby or whatever, because for some beautiful and overweight are characteristics that dont go together, fat is ugly so this girl is like an exception to that rule, and they try to calm their hearts by saying "yeah she's not so fat!!"... she is, thats the point bro

"This movie just had the bad luck of really bad advertising"
Iron Giant and Titanfall 2: "First time?"
Wasn't Titanfall a game ?
I didn’t even know it had a sequel 💀

Elliot The Littlest Reindeer : You guys got lucky, I only premiered for one day in theaters "
Battleborn: heheheh. That's cute kid.
All of these comments reminds me of this meme:
Me: I’m fat.
You: Noooooooo! You’re not fat, you’re beautiful!
Me: um, I said I’m fat, not ugly.
LMFAOOOO
Very true
Yikes 💀
U not beautiful or fat to me, to me u are THICC
Get 100 subs from comments oof?
Me: *Looks at poster* "DAFUQ?!"
Saberspark: "This is from South Korea."
Me: "Never mind. This makes perfect sense."
By that, I mean that the faux pas is more understandable when you see how the general view of Korean beauty standards can SEVERELY culture shock international audiences.
After I heard it was South Korean, I was like, "Oh yeah. I like K-dramas and K-pop. I've seen '300lb Beauty'. They have insane beauty standards and are ridiculously blunt. Someone must've messed up in marketing and just directly translated the original South Korean directly instead of doing their job right."
Terrible marketing... someone definitely got fired.
I never saw this poster or the controversy around it here in Germany. I just saw the title and since I am a big fan of fairy tales, I watched it. And immediately had to buy it. It is SOOOOO GOOD! You are missing out big time if you let yourself be dissuaded from anything else to watch this great movie. I loved it to bits and it has a special place on my shelf of animated movies. :)
This is one of not even a hand full of movies, where the girl does not reach her goal by becoming "a beauty". Also in the beginning it wasn't a witch that cursed the seven, but a princess. They got cursed because they misstook the fairyprincess for a witch based on her looks. It is really all about not judging a book by its cover.
the IRONY
@@factsandlogic.8762 I know! we ended up judging the movie by its marketing.
We've been Merlined! (A reference to the movie)
also to add on, snow white's dad married regina becuz he believed she was too beautiful to BE a witch.
I want more of the film thooooo
@Bobert Wiltshire Ok? How does the change the good message of this film?
the marketing should have said “what if snow white was a different type of beautiful”
That would have been amazing!
If i saw that marketing i’d be on my top lists of animated movies i want to see
🙌
It would have been better to pick a completely different slogan, maybe none at all.
Atleast something like "Let your inner beauty shine" would be an improvement
Meh, the proposition on top is good tho
To further add to the comparison the original plot for Ezma when the movie was called Kingdom in the Sun was that she wanted eternal youth and was willing to do anything to get it.
I really hope this video got the movie more views. I personally did go and watch it because of this video & now it's one of my favourite movies.
All they had to say was, "Beauty isn't just skin deep." That would have saved the entire movie's marketting
They should hire you for advertising and marketing and fire whoever messed up the message!
Exactly. I would have been interested
Now that would have been a far better tagline for this film, instead of "Look how fat she is. Isn't she ugly?"
FACTS
Nope, people were offended. Nothing can ever make it okay now.
Another thing I liked about the movie is that they don’t treat Snow as clumsy or gross like other media, or like what the original ad led people to believe.
She keeps that gentle, graceful vibe in both of her forms. It’s hard to describe but there’s something really sweet about that. She has that Disney princess aesthetic going on.

I’m so bummed that this movie didn’t succeed financially. The message was lovely, the animation was BEAUTIFUL, and it was a nice subversive storyline. I watched this movie after seeing your review from it and I thought it was adorable! I loved the message about how you should love yourself for who you are, and being a Tangled fan, I actually love how Regina reminds me of Mother Gothel and how Merlin reminds me of Flynn Rider. It just really upsets me that marketing for this movie really affected the way people look at it. I’m hoping that with your video, many people are listening to what you have to say and actually watching it for themselves. Because it is definitely worth watching and not at all what the marketing said it would be.
