Fun fact about the Barbie lore: in Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale (one of my personal favourites), it's shown that she's actually an actress in all these films! That's why they're usually titled "Barbie in (insert whatever here)" because she's the star of the film :)
I remember there was a "bloopers" at the end of one of the barbie movies where it shows that they're all actors and it was really cute and funny lol It was called like magic of pegasus or something like that? There were pegasus in it and ice skating and a polar bear, at least from what I remember

the biggest difference between the two franchises is that Barbie characters’ hair doesn’t move at all and Bratz characters’ hair moves way too much for no reason

fun fact: there's blooper reels at the end of a few barbie movies that imply that they're actors playing out throughout the movie! perhaps an explanation for the barbie cinematic universe
yes yes yes!! and in fashion fairytale shes shown acting on the set of princess and the pea ! part of the plot of that movie revolves around her work as an actress (public opinion abt her iirc) i fully accept this theory as cannon

Kelly has given me PTSD and ever since I first witnessed the horrific forehead that is Kelly I have been going to war trauma therapy. That’s how bad Kelly is
Kurtis- Barbie is an actress. Each movie and it’s rules are different because they’re all fictional gigs for a fictional actress, hence why her name is almost never “Barbie” in these movies.
Fun fact: Most Barbie movies are actually movies Barbie does, she's an actress. Hence the titles being "Barbie as Rapunzel" or "Barbie in Princess and the Pauper." The only "real" ones are the ones with her sisters, the mermaid tale movies (edit: I've been informed these aren't "real" either, i just always assumed the were because she mentions her aunt in the first movie and her aunt is in fashion fairytale), fashion fairytale, and fairy secret. There might be more? Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
The old films in the early 2000s (from what I could remember!) began with Barbie telling Kelly or some other character a story. I distinctively remember this happening in the Christmas Carol, Rapunzel and Diamond Castle.
For the tie breaker, you should look through the lists and find out what is regarded as the worst of the barbie and bratz movies and put them head to head
@@ladyluck01 tbh i would watch barbie diaries 600 times if it meant i could purge the memory of barbie princess power from my brain. that was truly awful
It’s pretty weird, but it’s not too unrealistic. Cats mimic their owners and other animals a lot and some cats learn to bark like dogs. Though it doesn’t usually sound like an actual dog.
kurtis reviewing princess and the pauper and NOT commenting on the absolute unequivocal, historical, and never been beaten BANGER that is “how can i refuse” by preminger is my villain origin story
Ok no shit I'd never seen that movie as a kid and I still haven't but I heard that song once in another video and just listened to it for hours after like "wow"
Barbie is marketed as a real person which is crazy. She straight up got her own “reality show” we know her family and friends. She’s an actress hence her name being in all the titles, as if she’s this famous lead actress. The marketing is crazy. Also she’s a youtuber…? Edit: wow where did all these likes come from:0
you know this makes me think about Hatsune Miku, it's the exact same thing with her. Miku and all of the other vocaloids are marketed as real people, as if she's a singer and she even have an official Twitter account where she shitpost. She even does live concert as an hologram. It's like she's an actual celebrity but she's not she's just a synthetic voice program. Even when people think of the songs that Hatsune Miku sings they don't think of them as being the artist's song, they think of it as being a Miku's song. Almost like Miku is an artist that makes and interpret her own songs as opposed to being a voice program that people uses to make songs. It's kinda crazy that we almost think of them as celebrity when they're not even real people
While I think Preminger being severely bitchless was part of his motivation, I truly believe his main goal was to preform. “How could I refuse” slaps so immeasurably he just needed an excuse to put his whole Premussy into the theater.
My sister and I were OBSESSED with The Princess and The Pauper! Her name is Ashley mine is Erika, she’s a blonde I’m a brunette! We always thought it was another version of us in the movie LMAO
Yes for sure. He should watch barbie and the nutcracker because I want him to see the part with Kelly as well as the brother in the movie and Tim curry is the badguy rat in that movie
I think Kurtis will be pleased to know that Kelly has since been wiped from existence and replaced with a slightly different little sister named Chelsea.
i used to watch both barbie movies and barbie life in the dreamhouse so my theory was that raquelle (who always calls chelsea "kelly" wrote the barbie movies
fun fact: julian, the tutor in princess and the pauper, is voiced by the same guy as L from death note in the english dub. he's voiced a few characters in barbie movies
Lmao I laughed so damn hard with the whole, "they should have known I'd be reviewing it 17 years later, so no excuse." OH my lord too funny too funny 😂
Whenever Kurtis says “we’re getting close to the end I promise” I don’t want to get to the end I’ll watch three hours of Kurtis dissecting barbie and bratz movies 😂😂
He says this so much in his vids and it’s so funny and kind of sweet as though we didn’t all choose to click on and watch this nd are probably really enjoying it haha
I will say, in defense of the "A Girl Like You" song, Erica is the first one to say they're just alike and Annalise is confused at first, but Erica explains that they are both young women who prioritize taking care of their responsibilities over pursuing their passions. So it's not like rich Annalise just walked up and told poor Erica "Wow, we're like totally the same!". Erica's choice also makes more sense when you realize she's angling to be invited to the castle to sing in hopes of launching her singing career, so she wants to make a connection with Annalise and capitalize on the attention she is getting from the princess from her performance and their striking physical similarities... Also, being forced to marry a stranger is not an enviable life situation even if she is rich.
Yes!! They weren’t comparing their life situations but rather their identities. I also don’t think it’s completely fair to be too harsh on Annalise, sure she has amazing luxuries and privilege beyond belief but she’s completely powerless in her position as a princess. She has little actual authority in her political role and essentially none over her life. She even acknowledges this in the song ‘Free’ with “you’d think that I’m so lucky that I have so many things, I’m realizing that every present comes with strings”, sure the gifts are lovely but at the end of the day they’re (most likely) disingenuous tactics for political advancements; the more you give someone and treat them well the more obligated they feel to return the favor. This isn’t to say that her life is a hard as Erica’s because it’s not but to say she can’t complain or express her distress because of who she is doesn’t feel right. I would also like to defend the ending of the movie as well as critique it. I think how Erica’s story ends is great, the creators didn’t undo her ‘not ending up with the guy’ setup because in their conversation she doesn’t just straight up reject him and pick singing instead, she basically says she wants to pursue her dreams asap since she finally has the ability to and doing that while married isn’t an option in her mind. Dereck understands this and says he’ll wait for her once she’s fulfilled this dream, and she does, she goes to sing for a decent amount of time if I’m not mistaken but eventually misses him, and again now that she finally has the ability to follow her just follow her heart and do what she wants, she does back. The only thing I don’t like about Erica’s ending is the concept that you see in a LOT of media is that you have to sacrifice independence/freedom for love and vice versa, it makes love to be a responsibility which it shouldn’t be. For Annalise’s ending, I know her main thing was to be with Julian but it would’ve been nice to see them lean into her passion for science and show she gets to do something related to that. I know it’d be a bit difficult seeing as even today women aren’t fully welcome into STEM spaces, but at the end of the day it’s a movie for young girls so I think they could sacrifice some historical accuracy for the sake of giving girls a STEM role model. I mean how cool would it be when to learn that she gets to be a princess AND a scientist, young me would’ve gone feral for something like that.
I agree with what your saying. But I think you guys are going a little too deep on this one. Y’all are writing 5 paragraph essays on his idea of the song.
@@chloenfurnstahl that's literally what grown up barbie stans are like. that's what makes it so enjoyable. there's video essays the length of the film itself discussing the allegory of being gay and disabled in barbie fairytopia.
Yeah Kurtis is... Idk but his reading of the Princess and the Pauper seems to misrepresent the story because he keeps comparing it to the real world when its clearly not meant for that comparison
@@jits8767 it’s kind of silly though isn’t it? These films really don’t lend themselves to that kind of deep reading lol they can be enjoyable clearly but there just isn’t that depth there. People will get so, so over defensive over someone lightly making fun of a movie they liked as a kid it’s crazy. Even when he said multiple times how much he liked it and how well done he thought it was! People can do what they like for fun and if that’s overanalysing barbie films then sure. But not everyone has that same determination to read deeply into what is basically just a well done kids’ film. And if you ARE gonna read into it deeply, well then… as someone from a country that does still have a monarchy, and I wish it didn’t, I also don’t love the message of ‘royals have it hard too kids! They’re just like us really!’ People make the exact same arguments about royals living under all these constraints to defend them and the ungodly amount of money and land they hoard, over here. And it sucks! So you can’t have it both ways, can’t say oh these movies are deeper than you think actually! And also reject criticism of them you don’t like, made on that same premise.
I can’t believe Kurtis doesn’t mention the fact that when Cam returns Chloe’s shoe she acts all shocked, like she had no idea where it was even though she DEFINITELY DID WALK AWAY FROM IT AFTER LOOKING AT IT 💀
The song about Wolfy accepting himself in the bathroom scene was iconic when I was a kid. I still tear up at it. I view it as how I wish people were with neurodivergent people. Not just accepting, like it's some bad situation you have to learn to cope with, but loving and enjoying those differences fully. The line "Noah's Arc should have had a cat like you" is a favorite of mine. "The Cat's Meow" is the Autism Anthem, I will take no notes.
barbie is actually an actress in the movies, so all of them are roles that she has played. Except for Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale, where barbie is kicked off of a movie and goes to her aunts place in paris. In her RV , she has posters of past movies she’s done
Bratz "generic pop music" honestly hit hard when I was a kid. Not to mention the cd Bratz rock angels released! Bops on bops for kids who weren't into musical theatre lol
I never watched it despite being the prime target demo BUT just from Kurtis' snippets, some of the songs aren't half bad! I also don't care for the broadway thing and a jukebox musical seems more fitting for Bratz anyway (and fit the early 2000s vibe). just by listening to a few tracks, I feel like their songs were good for kids who's parents wouldn't let them listen to "grown up" pop/R&B but *would* get them a Bratz soundtrack bc it seemed like Kidz Bop to them lol also, just listened to "So Good" for the first time and ngl it genuinely slaps
The song «so good» from The Rock Angelz album was on repeat DAILY on my pm3 player as a kid, holy shit that was such a good song back then I’m pretty sure that’s the song that awakened my emo kid faze
Yeah I’m really annoyed that he dissed the music in the Bratz movie because Lauren Evans is the GOAT and she has amazing range. “This is how we do” isn’t really generic, it’s one of my favorite songs.
I know it doesn't matter, but thank you for actually giving an estimate about how much it would've cost the Bratz for all these crazy things. It makes sense to be unrealistic for a children's movie, but when it comes to adult movies, it's irritating how irrational their spending gets.
If he’s gonna do that he has to watch the first Fairytopia. I remember I watched Mermaidia as a kid and never realized there was a previous movie. Always thought the recap at the beginning was just the part of the story they didn’t bother to tell😂
Okay so as someone who wrote a short university essay on this movie I feel qualified enough to talk about Preminger's motives. in his solo song he mentions being the son of a peasant; throughout the film there are multiple mentions of his hatred for the royal class "always underestimating me, isn't that just like a royal?", as well as him saying in "How Can I Refuse?" that he wants to be "As big as Charlemagne" (a ruler known as the father of western Europe; he united many countries). I think more than anything, Preminger wants to reverse the roles that seem to have haunted him most of his life - it's not enough to just be rich, he wants to be at the very top of *this* specific kingdom that has forced him to "lie like a rug". If you look at it from this perspective, the whole film really does take an interesting turn with regards to attitudes towards the monarchy and capitalism - and what it does to those at the very bottom of the hierarchy🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♂️
Daaamn that's so interesting. Also the way patriarchy plays into it since the plot revolves so much around marriage and power. I haven't watched the movie recently so i cant bring this thought to a coherent end but i would love to read your paper, that sounds absolutely amazing! Feels like an alternative ending would have the characters with a poor background overthrow the monarchy 😎
I never noticed all of those details! That's so interesting. I always interpreted it as that by marrying into royalty he'd have a more solid form of power. Like in The Swan Princess, how Rothbart says "Once you steal something, you spend your whole life fighting to keep it. But if I marry the only heir to the throne… We’ll rule your father’s kingdom together, legally, King and Queen." In addition, this kingdom has history and an established presence. If he started his own kingdom from scratch, it wouldn't have the same prestige and respect. He'd just be some rich guy who paid people to "play kingdom," until his family lineage built up a similar reputation over time, by which point he'd be long dead.
And despite having relatable reasons for his thoughts/actions, the movie paints him as an evil villain, reinforcing the fears of people in power/aristocrats that are afraid bourgeois 'upstarts' will share/take their exclusive power and privileges by means of capitalism. (Hmm, one could write an essay comparing this movie with (pre-) French Revolution ideas/idealogies about aristocrats and the bourgeoisie...)
he's still a thief though and property is not his. He's just a hypocrite taking from other people because he's mad he wasn't given a better start in life./ Idk about you but anyone who's mistreated and then turns around and starts mistreating other people for "prorevenge" didn't really learn the lesson they should have from the adversity they faced. If starving is bad and you've been starving...the first thing a normal person wouldn't do would be to take food from others. Similarly taking money or resources from others, to put yourself higher than them is essentially putting your needs before theirs. Which is what he's complaining about; he's hypocritical and a man. The two worst things to be. Also, he old.
@@watermelongirl142 I mean, I found out I know the words to...too many of the songs when I replayed the Rock Anglez pc game for my channel. I remember those but can't remember my own doctor appointments so, I think that says they did a good job lmfao
My wife and I were in a grocery store, and we turned down the aisle that has all the cards, and other non-food items...but there was a box of big rubber balls, and two of them were just sitting in the middle of the aisle, and we just both turned to each other and said "Balls" at the same time. Thank you for adding that to my life, Kurtis
Fun fact: around the time Princess and the Pauper came out, Barbie sold singing dolls of the two “identical” women in the movie. If you pressed the button on their music boxes at the same time, they’ll duet “I’m just like you”. I *may* have had them as a kid and played the songs endlessly…
kinda surprised kurtis didn’t mention anything about the cat that barks and how there’s a whole song about it while erica is in the bathtub also preminger is voiced by martin short
I don't know, I feel like Erica's birthmark could have still been something visual, like maybe a family of moths exiting a little wallet or coin purse.
On the note he gave about the animation, Barbie totally wins my heart because almost all of their movies are mo-capped. Motion captured, which means there were real humans in dot-track suits doing all of the dancing, singing, and choreography that were animated over. It truly was a love letter to that beginning animation, one that really stands out to me is Barbie and the Diamond Castle. The reflection animation is gorgeous
@@henrysphone6364 probably not because in order for mo cap to work you have to have an actor that is approximately the same size of the character you're animating.
Petition for Kurtis to do commentary on every Barbie movie, especially considering the first one of this "series" is one of my comfort videos for some reason
So I didn’t realize this, but there is a CD called “Bratz Rock Angels” that has nothing to do with the movie soundtrack. It’s like the music their band would have put out if they movie actually followed the band and not their journey to be fashion journalists. But it SLAPS. Curtis- review the album!!!
Wanna remind everyone that the barbies they sold in relation to this movie actually sang to each other if you pressed the buttons on their backs at the same time
Fun fact: my sister and I watched princess and the pauper all the time growing up- so much so that my sister basically made Preminger her imaginary friend. Except she couldn’t pronounce his name exactly right and would call him PERminger. I would walk by her room sometimes and she would just be talking to or yelling at the imaginary Perminger. Literally have no idea why that character was so influential to her.
P&P and Rapunzel were two of the movies I was too embarrassed to watch with my parents at ages 2-5 because I had crushes on Preminger and Gothel. Your sister was enlightened.
even though as adults we can obviously see that it’s annoying how a princess was complaining, but I actually love in this movie how erika was able to empathize with anneliese and not just judge her, she saw herself in her and understood that she had her own struggles. I always think that aspect is so sweet
Also she was being forced into marriage and stuff no? No matter how rich you are, being treated like a thing to be sold in order to secure an arrangement also must suck.
In the song when Erica said I'm just like you, Annalise was like "you are?". So Annalise did not see their situations as comparable but Erica did. Also Annalise was complaining about an arranged marriage while she was in love with someone else. rich or not it's a valid reason.
Yeah, I always find it puzzling and a bit worrying how the general consensus on the internet seems to be "if you're rich, you can't have problems and you should shut up instead of asking for help". It feels like many people have such bitterness towards rich people that they don't even see them as people anymore.
@@thanatoast Yeah ngl like. Wasn't that a huge plot point of Alladin too? I haven't heard that same bitterness given to Jassmine. Privileged, yes, but I think forced arranged marriage is pretty damn valid to be upset about lmao
For most of the Barbie movies Barbie is “acting” so it’s not like this is an alternate time line or anything it’s actually just Barbie acting. It’s actually pretty interesting.
@@thematiasmadness7010 it’s not even a theory, Barbie Fashion Fairytale literally shows Barbie acting in a movie, then when in her trailer there’s a poster for Barbie in a Mermaid Tale, and later she talks about the filming of Barbie in the 3 Musketeers so at least all the movies pre Fashion Fairytale can be assumed to be Barbie “acting” in those films, I’m not certain if that keeps going in later movies tho
Yesss when I was a kid I would play with my Barbie’s and make up different stories where all the dolls were the “actors”. I would keep track of the different stories I made and then I’d have award shows for the dolls after a few days. All inspired by this idea from the movies
Hey! Did you know God is three in one!? The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit! Bless them! Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead, and gives salvation to everyone who believes in him and follows his commandants! Have a blessed day, everyone! ❤
I need Kurtis to talk about that one Barbie movie about two cottagecore lesbians finding this magical shell thing in the river edit theyre not shells they’re diamond hearts lmao 😭
no bc i could write a whole paper on how the barbie cinematic universe is a masterpiece. the lore about barbie being an actor and some of the movies being in the real world and others just being movies she acted in WAS ABSOLUTELY GENIUS
The way I saw it was that since it was barbie telling her sister stories, so they'd be the " real people" and the story she would tell is sort of self-insert fiction. Those stories/characters did not happen in Barbie's real world, that's why there isn't consistent logic. I don't know why they stopped using that format.
@@Ian8Abbie yes exactly, it was a creative way to reuse models for all their movies, by having these all be movies in which Barbie is a famous actor, so it would make sense that we would have other recognizable actors in there too lol

I remember being like 8 and blowing my own mind trying to put a barbie timeline together. I went on TH-cam and anilized the shit out of the movies though they were split into like 17 parts lol
Explainer for Kurtis on the BCU (barbie cinematic universe): movies where Barbie is referred to as "Barbie" all happen in the same universe, and the main character is either Barbie herself or a descendant/relative of Barbie (also named Barbie) (see Barbie Starlight Adventure). In any movies where the main character is not named Barbie, Barbie is the actress who played the main character (like a meta situation, where Princess and the Pauper, for example, is a film product that also exists in the canon Barbie timeline as a film she acted in).

8 year old me was SHOCKED when the fashion fairytale movie revealed she was an actress
Wait wait wait I thought Mermaid Tale was Merlia???
Im pretty sure the mermaid ones were also her acting because in a fashion fairytale she had a poster of the movie up in her trailer
I believe barbie as the actress movies were all the ones with her sisters, fashion fairytale, a fairy secret and barbie diaries
The old films in the early 2000s (from what I could remember!) began with Barbie telling Kelly or some other character a story. I distinctively remember this happening in the Christmas Carol, Rapunzel and Diamond Castle.

Barbie is marketed as a real person which is crazy. She straight up got her own “reality show” we know her family and friends. She’s an actress hence her name being in all the titles, as if she’s this famous lead actress. The marketing is crazy. Also she’s a youtuber…?

you know this makes me think about Hatsune Miku, it's the exact same thing with her.

I never watched it despite being the prime target demo BUT just from Kurtis' snippets, some of the songs aren't half bad! I also don't care for the broadway thing and a jukebox musical seems more fitting for Bratz anyway (and fit the early 2000s vibe). just by listening to a few tracks, I feel like their songs were good for kids who's parents wouldn't let them listen to "grown up" pop/R&B but *would* get them a Bratz soundtrack bc it seemed like Kidz Bop to them lol

Yet another compelling reason to love Preminger
Also, he old.

even though as adults we can obviously see that it’s annoying how a princess was complaining, but I actually love in this movie how erika was able to empathize with anneliese and not just judge her, she saw herself in her and understood that she had her own struggles. I always think that aspect is so sweet
Also she was being forced into marriage and stuff no? No matter how rich you are, being treated like a thing to be sold in order to secure an arrangement also must suck.
@@thanatoast exactly...
Bro I think you are onto something how the hell didn’t I think about it
@@thematiasmadness7010 it’s not even a theory, Barbie Fashion Fairytale literally shows Barbie acting in a movie, then when in her trailer there’s a poster for Barbie in a Mermaid Tale, and later she talks about the filming of Barbie in the 3 Musketeers so at least all the movies pre Fashion Fairytale can be assumed to be Barbie “acting” in those films, I’m not certain if that keeps going in later movies tho
@@caspian4087 I was a kid, a very stupid kid and also I didn’t watch that one
Yesss when I was a kid I would play with my Barbie’s and make up different stories where all the dolls were the “actors”. I would keep track of the different stories I made and then I’d have award shows for the dolls after a few days. All inspired by this idea from the movies
@@thematiasmadness7010 that’s why all the titles are actually “Barbie as….”
I was disapponted that Chloe's whole foot doesn't come off (as happens with Bratz dolls when you change their shoes), would've been hilarious.

I need Kurtis to talk about that one Barbie movie about two cottagecore lesbians finding this magical shell thing in the river
edit theyre not shells they’re diamond hearts lmao 😭
theyre heart shapes diamonds 😭, barbie and the diamonds castle
@@screamingbegins4688
wait srsly damn then my memory is terrible lol 😭
Pleaseee😭😭😭
pls n those 2 useless princes were there just for the "noooo they are just very close girl friends!! like besties that are girls!!"
Oh my god yes. Did you also watch that guys video about why Barbie is a lesbian?
no bc i could write a whole paper on how the barbie cinematic universe is a masterpiece. the lore about barbie being an actor and some of the movies being in the real world and others just being movies she acted in WAS ABSOLUTELY GENIUS
Yesss and something I didn’t notice until I was older was that you also see a lot of recurring actors in the background, I love it sm
The way I saw it was that since it was barbie telling her sister stories, so they'd be the " real people" and the story she would tell is sort of self-insert fiction. Those stories/characters did not happen in Barbie's real world, that's why there isn't consistent logic. I don't know why they stopped using that format.
@@rosebird7414 that's because they re-used old models... they literally half had the same face
@@Ian8Abbie yes exactly, it was a creative way to reuse models for all their movies, by having these all be movies in which Barbie is a famous actor, so it would make sense that we would have other recognizable actors in there too lol
stay tuned for my barbie cinematic universe dissertation i’m hoping on publishing by summer ‘23 bc u absolutely can write a whole paper on the BCU, i’m only 120 pages in after 6 months of working on it & i’m only 1/3 way thru 🙃
I need Kurtis to review the Barbie Fairytopia movies bc they are insane. Also, the one where "real life" Barbie goes to some fairy world bc a fairy queen kidnaps Ken bc she wants to marry him. The most meta shit ever.
I remember being like 8 and blowing my own mind trying to put a barbie timeline together. I went on TH-cam and anilized the shit out of the movies though they were split into like 17 parts lol
Are the Barbie movies on any streaming service because this is bringing up so many random memories I want to revisit
I need his reaction to Bibble oh my fucking god
barbie fairy secret is the best barbie movie by far

The Princess and the pauper was one of my favorite movies as a kid, I rewatched it like 100 times
I love how instead of saying “kidnapped the princess” Kurtis just said “how’d they go in and *steal* the princess”
@our hero will you just shut up man?

Explainer for Kurtis on the BCU (barbie cinematic universe): movies where Barbie is referred to as "Barbie" all happen in the same universe, and the main character is either Barbie herself or a descendant/relative of Barbie (also named Barbie) (see Barbie Starlight Adventure). In any movies where the main character is not named Barbie, Barbie is the actress who played the main character (like a meta situation, where Princess and the Pauper, for example, is a film product that also exists in the canon Barbie timeline as a film she acted in).
Which is why it has bloopers
Perfect explanation
so it's kinda like Zelda if Zelda had an acting career
I could never meet Kurtis in person. Something about his persona is so humorous I'd just be laughing nonstop even if he wasn't joking with me.
I met him in person last year and he was so quiet and soft spoken and nice but also cracking little jokes. He's the nicest :')

Cant wait until Kurtis does the real life barbie movie against the bratz
in the lore of Barbie movies, Barbie is actually an actress who starts in the movies. in princess and the pauper she plays both roles
Like in that Lindsay Lohan movie i dont know the english name?
