    Might need a way to turn off pothole detection in the UK - will be a never ending stream of notifications

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

      You can turn off Hazard alerts per profile. Thus, you could have a UK profile or a Belgium profile, and shut it off entirely.

      It’s actually ridiculous, about 18 months ago it flipped from being nervous about driver to being nervous about the roads for me. It’s now impossible for me to go at a reasonable speed on roads I don’t know because the roads are so bad, I don’t know how I haven’t broken a wheel yet

    • @danielbliss1988

      The UK implementation needs a feature for automated direct uploading of pothole reports to the DfT and local authorities. Likewise, about 40 to 45 US states really could use direct uplinks to their respective DOTs and just about every major rust belt city in the US needs an upload to their 311 service or streets & sanitation departments.

      Living on the other side of the border, I avoid as much as possible to ride in Belgium. Gravel paths are better than their roads. And drivers are the worst : every time I feel a passing car brushing me on the bike, I watch the license plate, and it's a “red” one…

    Will definitely appreciate the fast gradient calculations, I do quite a bit of climbs and it's pretty funny seeing 10% when it's actually 18% or doing U type descents where it's still showing climbs when I'm descending already. What I'd really appreciate is if they somehow managed to make the "Instant Phone Keyboard" feature that Garmin watches have available to Edge units. I'd like to type from my phone than using the somewhat clunky keyboard layout on my edge.

    but are they going to solve the SSID WiFi bug (it can't communicate directly with WiFi with a hidden SSID) or the idiotic auto screen brightness setting on the Garmin 840 that sets the brightness way too low in dim light? I don't see either on the list of changes.

  • @fedos

      @@ev-ezaye3580 the 520 was released in 2015. the 530 was released in 2019. The 540 was released in 2023. Assuming the pattern will repeat, that puts the 550 in 2027. Probably not worth waiting that long if the 520 is on its way out.

  • @_J.F_
    @_J.F_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    I am still using my 530 unit but have been wanting to upgrade for a while. I like the fact that Garmin seems to always be very generous with releasing new units with new functionalities but also allowing for the same new features to be available for older devices, so while the 1050 looks awesome it also comes with a matching price tag and since I like the smaller physical size anyway I might just get the 840 when I decide to upgrade. Also the 840 has got buttons as well as touch screen, which is another thing I really prefer.

    • @vrapan
      @vrapan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      generous? they only give the features to the last generation and i am assuming that is because they have to keep the 1040 around because of the massive hit to battery life that screen has on the 1050. They are stingy beyond belief especially for devices that cost the equivalent of a mid/high end phone.

    • @_J.F_
      @_J.F_ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@vrapan I think the reason is that the 530 and 1030 are too old and with too outdated processors to deal with the new functionalities offered. This happens across all brands simply because tech moves forward at quite a pace and rather than getting into all sorts of problems with things that won’t run on old units the old units just do not get these updates. Exactly the same happens with all IT and similar tech regardless of brand.

    • @vrapan

    these group ride features seem cool and all, but i really don’t think they'd be usable unless they're intuitive & require little to no effort. the current group track features don’t work easily; i tried to have my mom show up on my map, and despite her being one of my garmin connections and us both having live track enabled we couldn't see each other on our maps.
    if garmin requires people to be connections, have live track and group track enabled, have the route running, and have a consistent phone connection, i don’t think it would come up.
    i have borrowed a wahoo from a family member and was pleasantly surprised to see other wahoo users on the map despite me not initiating anything, having the route running, or being "friends" with them in any way

So I deleted it - strangely enough the map was still visible in Map manager, but again with an 'update available' message. Again I did the 6 hour download, again the map was locked once done.
    I then tried this using Garmin Express. Delete the map, yet it was still visible in Map Manager. Reinstalled the maps from Garmin Express which took 1:15 instead of 6 hours, but still the same issue.
    So it seems updating maps from Map Manager is extremely slow compared to Garmin Express, despite having a superfast Wifi connection. Secondly it seems to break things.. I mailed Support about this, hopefully they can help me out without having to do a Factory Reset.

    I loved my 705 Edge. I traded it on on a 1040 thru Garmin. What a waste. Calories measure at 40% accuracy. When adding manually the calories are correct. WTF!!
    The vertical mapping is always off by up to a quarter mile.
    On vertical. I live in the Midwest and we may have 80 feet of total relief in my county. Also ride in Florida a lot where there is zero relief. The 705 allowed gradation of 25 feet. The 1040 is only 100 feet or a flat asses line where I live. The 705 allowed both horizontal and vertical independent adjustment on the vertical screen not the 1040. I wish I could get my 705 back. This is the last Garmin I'll ever buy, Sadly!!!

    Hi DC, wasn’t sure where to ask this. I’ve recently bought the Garmin Edge 1040 and 4iiii Precision Pro 3+ Dual Sided Power Meter. When I pair it up to the Garmin, it pairs up the left side as Ant+. Then search again and the right side shows up under Bluetooth connections. Now I can only connect either the left or the right. I’ve tried deleting them, turning the Garmin off and on again, but same thing, the only difference now is, that when I turn the Garmin on, it pops up twice that it’s connected to the left hand crank. When I ride up and down the road, the Garmin shows the left and right balance % on my screen. Help please if possible. Oh, on the 4iiii app, both show up as paired.

      Huh? First, there's no such thing as a 1040 Plus. Doesn't/never existed. There's the Garmin Edge 1040, which came out just over two years ago, in early June 2022. The only new features here that the Edge 1040 isn't getting, is ones requring new hardware (like the new louder speaker for the bike bell), or faster processor for the new UI. But the underlying new Edge 1050 features are available to the Edge 1040.

      I've never used it. And yes, there are other brands out on the market. Half of people I know use Wahoo, the others Garmin, fewer use Bryton or other brands. But I noticed that Wahoo has a better capability of showing cyclists on a map, as it shows all that have enabled their visibility on a map, and not like in Garmin where you have to choose riders/friends from your connection list. In Wahoo you do not have to have any of them in your connection list of any sort. For many there may be too much hassle and bothering in adding/finding people in Garmin Connect, and also some may not use GC as such.

    Garmin needs to learn how to sync our data with 2 devices. I have a 1040 Solar nad Fenix 7x pro. I bought 1040 just to not have to wear my watch during a ride (I dont want it to bounce on my wrist) and my data almost never syncs from 1040 solar.
