    I learned a lot from this video.
    Thank you so much!!!

    This vid is probably theost helpful since I have no idea how to characterize the "dark" and "bright" timbre.

    • @jazzcazzbazznazz4778
      @jazzcazzbazznazz4778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way I understand dark vs bright is by thinking about how I would sing a certain song. One of my favorite classical pieces is Fugue in G minor, if I were to sing this to someone I would use a “bom” to represent the soft round darker tone of classical saxophone. If I were singing what Jay was playing at the end of the video I would probably use a combination of “da” and “ba” to give the impression of the hard sharp brighter sound.

    I bought the DV 5-6 years ago and it’s still my primary mouthpiece! I’ve never really noticed how versatile it is but I can get my sound to go from Sanborn to Albright to Cannonball all on the same piece

      Well, as he says, his Alto sound is rather bright, naturally. You might achieve a similar sound with different equipment. Make sure to take enough time to listen to yourself with each mp. Play in different rooms, and record yourself. (Ideally with a mic, but even your phone can give you a bit of an "outside perspective.")

    The HR* sounded great! It's perfect for bebop or lead alto. Absolutely has that
    New York Meyer vibe, such a perfect alto tone.

    I just went through a trial of my own a few months ago with the Jody Jazz DV, HR* and Jet mouthpieces when I decided to get a more open version of the HR* I already owned. When I called for the mouthpiece trial, I was surprised to have Jody pick up the phone and talk with me about his mouthpieces. I wasn't going to try the DV because of the high price, but he convinced me that I had nothing to lose in giving it a try. I'm really glad I did, because that mouthpiece is fantastic and the one I decided to keep, easy blowing and seems to work with just about every reed I throw onto it. Stimulus money and birthday gift to myself. All the Jody Jazz mouthpieces were great, consistent like Jay says, just need to pick the one that suits your needs..

    Yes, the DV is worth the money. I generally play in a sextet where each member can swing. I must say that after playing for almost 70 years now I depend upon the set-up more than ever before. At 79 years of age my playing has eroded giving way to shaking hands, poor air supply, and extreme fatigue.

    If I listen hard I can tell the difference, but in a real sense they all sound like Jay Metcalf (and thus very different from me), who makes any of they sound they way he wants them to sound.
    If a first or second the DV is probably the wisest choice for me. Third place I'd want a Jet, since it's a better contrast to my Meyer (I presume).

    Four years ago I started playing tenor again (after many years not playing since high school) and, about 6 months into it, was looking for some mouthpieces. I purchased the Selmer Soloist C* which I play in HS for band concerts, but had to "guess" at what to get for a jazz mouthpiece. I ended up purchasing the Jody Jazz HR* 5 (I play Java Green 2.5 reeds on it) and the Jet 6 (I play Vandoren Jazz 2.5 on it) based on Jody Jazz's recommendations. I love them -- and I guess I got lucky! And they perform pretty much like you advertise!

  • @eddyhoughton6542
    @eddyhoughton6542 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Spend time with a new mouthpiece because first impressions can be deceiving" - That is an absolute gem of wisdom! Totally agree. I've stopped buying mouthpieces and reeds online because the supplier I use (Saxtienda.com in Madrid) have a soundproof booth you can practice in as long as you like and they will let you play on any number of mouthpieces which they then disinfect professionally. They even have a complete suite of Légère plastic reeds to try out. I've spent endless hours in there checking one piece against another and I've never come away disappointed, unlike when I've bought things untested online. (NB - this was pre-Covid, I have no idea what they do now but I suspect this service will be suspended until Covid is over) It's also true that there's a surprising diversity between different mouthpieces of the same model, I've tried different Selmer Soloist and Concept models which perform quite differently. Surprisingly, possibly my favourite mouthpiece is a humble old Otto Link Tone Edge 7* that I picked up second hand when I bought an old Keilwerth EX90 II Tenor for gigging with years ago. It's easily the most fun to play of my collection, and you can get really creative with it, although it's definitely Jazz-leaning and doesn't do pianissimo very well. It kind of reminds me of the Jody Jazz Jet 7 tip in this video. I hate to admit this because I've spent tons of money on metal mouthpieces that really look the part, my old Tone Edge is faded and kind of khaki coloured, but I've really grown into it and it's a joy to play!

    I use a Jody jazz DV NY and matching ligature for that mouthpiece I love it , I don’t use anything else , I found it hard to come by here in the uk 🇬🇧 and omg it was expensive

    These all sound incredible! 🤩 I'm tempted by the DV NY because I love a darker sound but the DV is also very appealing, as it seems really versatile and I just love how it sounded. It's also a great looking piece 🤗 Thanks for another insightful and fun video. 🎷❤🧡💛

    I would like between the DV for its pop or Jody Jazz Jet for its gurgly warmth. Nice presentation of each mouth piece

    Pulled my alto out after a fair number of years and the mouthpiece is definitely pants. Any of these would be a major upgrade as I got back going.

    You should do the same video with the soprano saxophone 🙏

    It's very interesting to notice the clear difference between the darkest and the brightest mouthpiece sounds. The DV stills my fav. As always, amazing sound Jay!
