2022 Mazda3 Long Term Review - Introduction

  • In this video we introduce Beyond the Test Drive's new long term tester and daily driver, a 2022 Mazda 3 Sedan in the Carbon trim level. We have owned this now for three months and this is our first update at nearly 7000 miles. This exact car plus some the dealer let us do overnight test drives was the source of our prior review videos. We liked the car so much we decided to go a head and get one.
    The 3 has a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that is naturally aspirated with a six speed automatic transmission. It has 186 hp and 186 lb- ft off torque. This specific trim comes with the polymetal grey paint and red leather seating.
    We have had a few odd quirks during the first 7000 miles with the infotainment and the steering so we will be keeping an eye on those.

    Those wheel and hood camera angles are something else man. You're bringing insane production value and information in these. Still haven't gotten a 3, decided I should actually test drive a few of my options before I settle but very few dealerships have stock in my area still.

      Thanks for the kind words. Really appreciate it! Let us know what you are considering. The Civic of course is pretty good especially in manual Si trim. This chip and and supply shortage is making it tough to comparison shop. Let us know if you have any more questions.

      I recently got a 2019 premium PKG. It was in between a 2018 soul red touring or our current 2019 premium.
      My wife loved the white leather so we picked the 2019.
      If you want a quiet, comfortable luxurious car then get a 4th gen for sure.
      If you are more like me and want to feel and hear your car and the road and care more about suspension the 2018 is a more fun car to drive.
      A part of me is honestly still in love with that 2018 and I'll even daydream about it.
      But overall I couldn't be happier with my car (except for the scratches)

    Have had my carbon for less than a month and already have 2500 miles on it driving from Washington to California and everywhere in between. I'm in love with it and have already gotten several compliments on it. The only problem I've had is seamlessly switching between audio when I use Android Auto and Bluetooth.

      I had this problem too. After using Android Auto, the bluetooth won't play music anymore. What happens is that Andriod Auto switches your bluetooth connection to 'phone'. To get the music to work again you need to go into bluetooth settings and change your connection type back to 'phone and audio'. This has to be a bug.

    Thanks to watching every one of your videos about this car -- Many times over for the past few months, I finally made a decision and purchased one. Dealer had one with the wireless charger come in (Which I didn't want because it's useless, you have to take all your stuff out of the box and even then your phone slides around) and I optioned to have the black hatchback grille surrounds installed, 50% ceramic tint installed all around, the auto dimming homelink rearview mirror, and chrome wheel locks installed.
    I'm fearful of the piano black trims in the interior and have left the film on them for now. Let us know what you end up doing about that.
    I'm considering downgrading to 16" wheels because the roads are garbage in my town.
    Looking forward to your future update!

      Congrats on your new 3. That is awesome! So glad we could help. Sounds like some great adds ons. Regarding the center console, we have dreams of getting it wrapped but just have not done it yet. It does scratch but if it’s kept clean I find it looks ok. Definitely drive it while before you decide on a tire swap. You should have 18’s so 16’s with more sidewall will definitely ride better but definitely impact handling a bit. We are close to our 20k mile update video so keep an eye out for that one. All the best and thanks for the kind words!

    I put a deposit on a carbon. It has everything I want from a feature perspective but I'm toying with the idea of going up to the turbo. Hard to justify when it costs another $4k, especially because Im anticipating keeping the car only for around 5 years but it seems like it'd be fun. I'd definitely miss the red leather seats tho.

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would also gain AWD for the extra money. The turbo does take this car to a whole new level and it works with the AWD in and out of the turns. But the non turbo has its own personality and does like to rev where the torque of the turbo allows for low rpm’s. The best part of it all is that they are both great and staying with the non-turbo is not a big penalty as an overall package. The one thing with the turbo is range and real world fuel mileage seem to be a wide spread complaint. But on the other hand if we needed AWD it would be hard to beat compared to an SUV with similar performance and price. Keep in touch and let us know which way you end up going. And thanks for watching and commenting.

    I am from Europe and I have driven Alfa Romeos for 20 years. I finally stopped because they only made fat, overpriced cars, that you bought for the badge. Sad.
    So I went to some dreary used Honda after I scrapped my Alfa 166. (the one with the Busso engine, you know?)
    Cars became a non-interest for some years until this Mazda perked my interest. There was something about these looks...
    So, I test drove one of them. 180 HP version. Holy crap, The manual gearbox is so snappy you think you drive a Rallye car, the acceleration is not furious but relentless, the body lean in the bends, the sound, the interioor styling. I had major flashbacks to my 2 litre Alfa 146 that i had LOVED for all it's upsides and flaws...
    This is a car for driving and feeling the fun of it. Not a Sportscar, but one that makes you feel good. To me it's the sort of "Alfa 149" that those Italians could never be bothered to make anymore. Ordered one instantly.

    I'm from Europe (Scandinavia), and I got the fully equipped 2.0 150 bhp hatchback with automatic transmission in Soul Crystal Red. Overall, the transmission is solid but in some instances I feel it would do better with a couple of more gears.
    I just love the car and how it handles. The torsion beam on this car does surprisingly well but it's honest so bad pavement will tell.

    • @felixli5279
      @felixli5279 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assume your 2.0 @ 150bhp refers to the 2.0G version.
      I live in Canada and based on what i have learnt from various Mazda3 reviews/tests done on both sides of the Atlantic(plus a few test drives that I have done locally), power/torque delivery feel and acceleration are very very similar between the 2.0X(not available in N.America, 180ps I think) and the 2.5G(tested in this TH-cam but not available in EU, 186hp or about 189ps). However, the true beauty of the 2.0X is that its official fuel economy(e.g. WLTP) is actually rated at least 10~15% LOWER than the 2.0G, let alone the 2.5G if it is ever available in EU. But as always, there's a catch: the amazing compression ignition tech behind the 2.0 Skyactiv-X costs a lot to develop+produce(and therefore to buy).....probably similar to the cost of the 2.5G turbo(only available in N.America) @ 250hp/320lb-ft.....

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing. The chassis tuning makes it fun to drive and 150 Hp is plenty in most cases. Handling is great wit the torsion but it can get a little unsettled in the bumps.

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea. I agree Felix we in the states may not see the X in the smaller engines. I have seen a few videos stating the real world mileage is not all that Mazda states plus it is quite an expensive technology. I would though expect it in the larger SUVs as their higher cost can absorb the engine cost and the lower end torque would be ideal. Mazda seems a little aloof regarding which way they will go. I think the Toyota hybrids system would really bring life to the their vehicles as far as fuel economy.

    • @Emaratilfy
      @Emaratilfy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BeyondTheTestDrive Yes, I really wish Mazda had something similar to Toyota's hybrid system but maybe without the e-CVT transmission (although it's very well refined now). My Mazda 3 is a "mild hybrid" (e-Skyactiv G 2.0) with an emphasis on "mild". 😁
      But I love the car, the interior and the Bose audio system.

Kept traveling front to back as in a circle. This happened only when driving in a huge rainstorm. Next day all is fine. I think it could be an issue with water hitting the wiring but not sure as my car is in good condition. Perhaps the sunroof though closed in the rain could be the culprit as drainplugs could be clogged although it never leaked a drop ever. Good luck.

      Agree that the torsion beam does reveal itself from time to time. One benefit though is a nice quiet suspension over bumps despite the rear getting unsettled at times. Touch screen versus wheel is a personal preference. The screen placement in the 3 is ideal but does put it out of reach. Cross shopping this and the GLI, both manual. I’m interested in your opinion on the handling of both and the power difference. Is there enough in the 3 to be “sporty” and is it as buttoned down around corners as the GLI?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question. The GLI is about speed and handling and will get you through an autocross course faster. The 3 is more about feel. With a manual there is plenty of power for the 3 to be sporty. The GLI has a faster rack and is flatter in turns but the 3 provides more steering feel and feedback from the chassis. I would add that the 3’s engine is more responsive (no turbo lag) and likes to rev, so more of that driving feel. The GLI also has a limited slip which is really great out of turns and it is needed given the amount of torque it has. Hope this helps and let us know which way you go. Both are great choices. There is the Mazda 3 turbo. With it’s all wheel drive it would match the GLI through the turns I think. Thanks again for watching.

    Why aren't there any videos clearly showing everything this car has? I mean, I could just be asking for too much but in a long-term review, it would be great to know all the gadgets the car has to offer before going in full depth with the review. Correct me if I'm wrong.

      Hi Zak. Did you see our more comprehensive review before we brought this 3 on as our long termer? Here is the link.

    How's the ride quality? Soft? Hard? Firm? Maybe halfway?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thanks for the question. Ride quality is something to think about with the 3. I would describe it on the medium firm side but very comfortable. It’s only over really bad pavement where you feel the firmness. I think I mention in one video that the ride is fine, but if I had to drive really bad roads every day then maybe the CX-30 would work better with it’s slightly more softer ride.

    Does the Honda Civic have the same power and performance as the Mazda 3?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The base civic is well below at 158 HP. You can upgrade to a 1.5 turbo that has 180 Hp so that is getting close to the 3. There is the Civic Si with 200HP so that will out perform the non turbo Mazda 3.

    How it's cylinder deactivation feature? No issues?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marky Marc. Thanks for the question. Mazda stopped making this engine with cylinder deactivation for a year or two now but for 2023 it returns. The 2023 3 has a bit more horsepower and a tad better MPGs. So our 2022 does not have it. I have always been wary of any brands’ cylinder deactivation but Mazda must be confident enough they worked the bugs out to bring it back.

    • @markymarc4651
      @markymarc4651 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply, that's good to hear. I think I'll still prefer without the cylinder deactivation, looks like I need to hurry up thinking and get this 2022 model already, lol.

      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markymarc4651 I am not sure on the 2023’s but deactivation was only a feature of the higher trim levels and maybe jus the AWD’s. I can’t recall. So worth checking if it’s universal in the 2023’s or trim level specific. All the best.

    • @zefwyn6793
      @zefwyn6793 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only the Select trim of the 22 features cylinder deactivation. On the 23 all of the trims have it. I currently have the 22 select and it’s lame on the roads and streets but I’m mostly on the highway so it doesn’t really come into play.

    • @WorksOnMyComputer

      @@zefwyn6793 Its on the highway where the cylinder deactivation really kicks in. If your car has the touch screen, bring up the fuel economy app and you can see a graphic where it shows what cylinders are firing.

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You can lease these. Leasing versus buying is an involved topic. Since manufactures use low lease payments to move inventory, lease deals are hard to come by now except on higher cost cars.

    Torsion beam ugh

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Handling wise the torsion beam does pretty well. But it does make itself known with some hopping on bad pavement. Mazda claims the torsion beams are quieter which I would agree with. But still, it will let you know it’s not quite as sophisticated as a multi link.
