- Why does Regigigas have Slow Start, one of the Worst Abilities in Pokemon? It even has it in Pokemon Legends Arceus, which is a game that otherwise is absent of abilities. Is it possible there is a lore reason behind this Titans difficulty getting going? I believe so

GameFreak treats Regigigas so terribly,Seriously I find it so insane how Regigigas has no ability yet it's still in the game! Regigigas should be treated as a Titan!
He's more than a titan. He's supposed to be King of the Titans! He should be treated as such
If just slow start work for 2 or just 3 he can be at least kinda usable. 5 turns is Just too much it's literally the whole match
Especially in Legends where most pokemon survive only 1 or 2 attacks

If this IS the reason, I don’t see why they couldn’t just have it start at neutral and give it an attack boost after five turns.
Like World of Warcraft's XP that was meant to punish people who played for too long, players hated it...so they reframed it as being a rested Boost but it's the same code

Slow Start wouldn’t be that bad if it just lowered speed. There’s still no reason for it to lower attack as well.
this would probably shoot regigigas's usage up to UU/OU standards, it would play similar to snorlax, only it has better stats, but its setup moves arent great (just power up punch and rock polish)

I liked it. I always tought it was because he was asleep for so many milenia that he had trouble moving, like someone out of a coma... but your theory is way cooler

It would be SOOOOO EAAAAASY to balance this, and keep the lore intact. Just make it so that the first turn is 50%, second is 75%, third 100%, fourth 150%, and fifth 200%.
This makes you work for a balanced boost, keeps in line with Regigigas being Arcesus’s strong executioner, and humans being able to subjugate it.

This theory actually have some official backing to it. Regirock's pokedex entry in Pokemon Shield says "Cutting-edge technology was used to study the internals of this Pokémon’s rock body, but nothing was found-not even a brain or a heart." So it's not a stretch to say all the golems are of a similar vein. Just being alive, but not sentient.

My balancing idea:
Slow start:
Decrease the Attack and Speed Stat by 50%. Then, on the start of each turn, increase the Attack and Speed Stat by 10%points. (no limit)
That would still make sense to the lore and give Gigas the balance he need.
He would need 6 turns instead of 5 to gain his full power, but he can growth beneath that. Well, tibia honest, it wouldn't happen so often since A pokemon is barely longer then 6 rounds alive (not to mention most fight don't even take 6 turns), but it can be funny. :3

Something like -20% with constant 10% increases would be more viable if you make him bulky enough
They should give Regigas a buff when it’s the 5 turn it’s speed and attack doubled, giving the trainer a reward for surviving for 5 turns and now it be able to haul @ss
Just make the ability start off as a defensive one then to attack.

Boosting it's defense for like two or three stages and turning those boosts into attack and speed after the turns ended would actually make him kinda fun
It'd be a challenge for your opponent to KO you before it's too late, and it still leaves a few counters out in the open

@@donellebullock7404 my idea was in the 1st turn: increase def and spdef 50% plus immue to status and the usual components of slow start
2nd turn:75% atk and speed return but def and spdef 25% and no status immunity
3rd turn: just straight up get its act together (5 turns is too much bullshit)
Considering I knew that Regigigas was based on Golems, and I knew Golems were beings who's power grew the longer they were alive, slow start always made sense to me. It's interesting to learn that the "power grew the longer they were alive" comes from a specific story of a Golem though, didn't know that part. That would explain why the other golems don't have the same limitation.
Before my research I simply knew they were based on golems, so it was fun reading into the history and mythology. It's amazing how deep the lore for these pokemon can go
I think it would've made more sense if they had a slow releasing of the power. .5x on turn one, .6x on turn 2, .7x on turn 3, etc. It would've made him way more usable.

I think slow start would have been ok if the turns ticked down while it was off the field. That would make it a great late game sweeper, if you can last five turns before bringing it out.
Thats not a bad fix, Maybe the ability only starts ticking down the first turn he's out, that way the trainer has to "wake" him but also so your not just guaranteed a surprise Regigigas on turn 6

Lore wise, I think this is cool...
But I also wonder if someone at game freak really just hated regigigas and decided to make it as Terrible as they could.
It's not because a pokemon is not competitivly viable in Uber that Game Freak hates it.
It was for balance it would have been a very strong pokemon if it's ability never happen witch mean people would have it a lot in online

@@ultmewtwo Balance. For a Legendary with a BST of 670. A Legendary, that requires having 3 (later 5) other lesser Legendaries in your party to even ATTEMPT to catch. And is usually locked to Post game content in just about EVERY game it's in, so it's not like you'd use it in a main playthrough anyway, not to mention that even at Full Power, Regigigas would still be weaker than some of the other major Legendaries that existed prior to it's own, were introduce in the same Generation, and ones we have gotten since.

Something I’ve noticed personally, that I don’t think anyones really pointed out. Regigigas is clearly based on a computer (obvious), and his Dex number is 486.
That also happened to be a very popular processor (The Pentium 486), from close to 30-40 years ago now, and despite being “good” at its time, when Pokémon originally released, let alone Gen IV, that processor was a dinosaur and SUPER slow. I can’t help but think Regigigas is an homage to those old 486 machines.

I mean, a robot is just a modern golem. Using electricity instead of magic, but to Arceus there's probably not too much difference there.
A cool plot twist would be golems being ancient robots made from clay & stone instead of the normal metal or plastic. You have to wonder if it is possible to make a modern robot using such materials & having electric wiring & computer chips inside our golem.
There is no such thing is as a "Pentium 486", though. The "Pentium" came after the 486, and its name was created for Intel to trademark something, as you can't trademark a bunch of numbers (internally it was first called the 586).
I remember first encountering Regigigas in Snowpoint Temple and thinking, "Wow, the god of the other Regis, surely he's going to be insanely strong", only to be insanely confused at how bad he was. Sad that to this day he retains that lack of power just for lore.
It's for balance not lore he only has 1 weakness good stats if he did not have slow start the pokemon will be op people hate skill swap slaking with its nerf ability people will hate him with out slow start

@@ultmewtwo in addition to the last guy ^ may I remind you that a dog with a sharp sword gets a buff by breathing, rayquaza gets a 780 base total by mega evolving and the 3 legendaries that came packed with regigigas had 10 more on their base total and didn’t get a debuff I don’t think Game Freak has balance in their minds at all when it comes to legendaries

What if instead of creating a ability that hinder him, they create some that make him stronger at each turn and in the fifth he becomes really powerful. I like normal type Pokemon, but the majority of them is kind of horrible. But I love the exceptions lol

@@Soulfin rayquaza deserved it /s but for real, it was banned from the banlist and got its own tier. Cant use it in Ubers and you get his mega post game so not much to miss. Regigigas genuinely needs it removed because he’s so shit.

Honestly, even according to your insanely good lore, slow start is a bad ability battle and lore wise.
The Golem grew in power along the week, and needed to be set to rest lest his power become Uncontrollable.
Regigigas doesn't grow with time, and his power is far from uncontrollable.
If they wanted him to really have something both Thematic and with good balance, they could just give him -5 stacks of attack and speed when being switched in, and a speed boost-like constant in which his stats raise by 1 every turn. At turn 5, the last day, his power is normal, just as powerful as he could be while controllable, and after that it would very quickly gain more and more power.

I feel like Regigigas should have a Hidden Ability that reverses the effects of Slow Start, where it buffs Regigigas after five turns. After seeing this video, it’s be cool if, say, after five turns, its attack doubles, but it becomes disobedient. It goes berserk, just like the golem it’s based on.
So basically, Give Regigigas an Ability version of the Berserk Gene from Gen 2?
Or when it’s slowed down it has higher defense stats.
Berserk Gene was confusion, Disobedience was something traded Pokemon did if you didn't meet the badge requirements. Most players won't encounter that because of having enough badges so it would be cool to see the mechanic reimplemented into an ability.
Give him insane stats when slow start isn't active, but he has a higher chance of mirror or just hitting an ally.
I remember when I first encountered Regigigas in the game. I felt so sorry for him when I realized he was one of three Pokemon who still had their abilities

Regigigas was always one of my favorites. He's awesome in doubles but nearly unusable in singles. There is no reason for this nerf. 5 turns is a long time in competive battling.
My theory is that someone in game freak fears normal types being powerful
This can be seen as in g1 normal types were dominant in g1
That’s why no new normal types are that powerful
Arceus is Normal Type, Ursaluna exists now, Bewear & Silvally, Obstagoon? Snorlax was still a king in Gen 2, although part of Normal's dominance in Gen 1 was because of the Hyper Beam Glitch & the lack of good Fighting moves at the time. Smeargle could be overpowered if it sketched the right moves.
Welp, theory or not this is now my headcanon for Daddigigas.
I always wanted some kind of alpha form for Regigigas, like how we got primal and origin forms, I was hoping in Legends Arceus, that we'd get a Prime form Regigigas, where he'd be somewhat the oppasite, maybe not nerfed but slightly buffed, and he'd be missing the moss covering his body as a form of showing his prime

I like the idea but if it’s supposed to be such a force of nature after five turns. To somehow make it viable, it has to have ridiculous stats. Like a stat total of 850 or something. Half those stats and you get a pretty bad Pokémon. But those stats actually make trying to survive five turns worth it!
Regigigas should have an ability called "Elemental" where it gets STAB off of Rock, Ice and Steel type moves.

I always just saw Regigigas' Slow Start ability as a result of it being frozen for a long time but this makes more sense
Imagine if slow start was just, "After five turns attack doubles." Thus turning Regigigas into a time bomb sweeper.
If they are gonna keep slow start then atleast change it to last less turns.

One thing people forget is that pokemon is a single player rpg first and foremost. Pokemon are designed for this- example; in gen 1 onyx was designed to be the first strong boss you'd encounter, its bulky but also fast, making it theoretically difficult for you to beat. outside of power curve when fighting against a certain pokemon, another part of it is story. Regigagas is not made to be a good pokemon to use, but an interesting fight to go up against. Slow start, because its just waking up, and you have 5 turns to defeat it (kill or capture) or deal with a very difficult enemy.

I’m so happy that regigigas was actually good competitively in swsh vgc. It’s always been one of my favorite pokemon ever since I was a kid and then the fact that it essentially took up two slots on your team (because you absolutely need to run it next to neutralizing gas weezing lol) gives it an interesting and unique niche
Expect the person you fight can just focuses on taking out the weezing or gain up on regigigas because unless you start off with double protect one of the 2 pokemon is going to be focus on witch will eater have the pokemon ko or at very low hp

I actually had my own lore for Regigigas because it seemed to make sense with the lore they had made already for it.
In my own lore, most Regigias are not the originals. It's a copy that was made by the REAL Regigias in order to imitate it's master's ability to create golems; who was a blind man who could not see the wickedness of mankind and could only see the beauty of the world and creation.
The human gained knowledge to create the first, primal Regigigas through Arceus. The blind man shared the ability to create and also made the other Regis. However, seeing this massive continent puller literally pull the world apart (my lore shares the Pangea theory and the reason why Primal Regigias actually was made, to separate the world to stop humans from fighting.) They feared the power and saw that it started trying to create it's own life in the weaker Regigigas and so they sealed them all away.
But Primal Regigigas was to strong even for his own creator to stop. And so (this is going to my own OC pokes so don't worry about this) the creator used the last of the stones made with infinity energy, and matter he discovered of a Distortion World to make Primal Regiaethos, the King of Souls (A Ghost-type counterpart to Regigigas) to fight and tire the beast so the ancients could seal them both into eternal slumber. The humans also made three other regis based on human eras (The Dark Ages, The Age of Enlightenment, and The Atomic Age, respectfully, as well as Regieleki) to combat the ancient ones made previously.
they should have given him as second ability like after five turns his attack speed and all other stats get a 50% increase on top of his stats returning to normal
OR a damage reduction boost while the slow start is doing its thing

Reminds me of how Nidorina and Nidoqueen are always unable to breed because they were bugged in the original generation breeding was introduced and it was kept that way as an inside joke. It's cute at first, but becomes really annoying in practice, and also very awkward making a giant Pokemon breed with a tiny rabbit. Imagine if Psychics were kept as broken as they were in the first gen, just to keep old lore alive.
Regigigas was given slow start so it could be allowed in battle facilities and VGC tournaments, which only ban boxart legendaries, who are purposefully OP, and mythicals, who some are inaccessible.

Idea: instead of making regigigas weaker, make slow start a buff. Make it a sort of countdown to doom. Creating a threat that has to be rushed down before it reaches full strength and becomes nearly unstoppable.
If you're going to give it Slow Start, give it an enormous stat total.
That would probably make it overpowered.

if you want balanced pokemons, you should play tiers like ou or uu, also, how can you even say that it would be op? what is your claim for that?
@@borlox6753 Nobody really cares about Smogon tiers. The format is pretty wild and all over the place. The fact that they allow things like event and transfer only Pokemon/moves kinda breaks the format. They do their best to keep it balanced, but even then it falls apart because of all the things that need to be accounted for. Even if we did care, it's unofficial, so they shouldnt balance Pokemon based off of that. The fact that Regigigas has such an enormous BST means it needs something to hold it back. I agree that it's underpowered as is, but you can't just let it run loose. Other Pokemon like Slaking with absurd stats are also given major drawbacks.
Well if everybody else are throwing there ideas in, guess i'll throw mine in as well.
So what im thinking is this
During slow start all of regigigas stats or halved, as to tie in with the lore already established
But when those five turns is up... his stats revert back to normal but also double. Like speed becomes 200, sp defence become 220 and so forth, really pushing forward the whole beserk aspect.
There will also be a new move change from Giga impact to " Terra Crunch"( name still a wip). Being a much powerful move but needing two turns to refresh but it does a heafty amount of dammage.
And as a side note, if the other regies are in the party they also get this sort of stat boost as well but in ghier lowest stat, as sort of a passive cause regigigas did make them.
How to fix Slow Start? Not really hard. Just make it only lower speed for 5 turns. Instead of Speed AND Attack which is unbearable
but oh well, this is too late. with Power Creep Regigigas wouldn't even be that good if it had a normal ability... Just look at Zamazenta
Then just make it so it rises the stats overtime instead.

I would've liked it if Regigigas had a bigger base stat pool. Where it was more powerful stat wise than any other legendary, emphasizing it's colossal form and dormant power, but the ability slow start keeping it in check for a while. Both for inspiration lore reasons, and also being asleep for so long and the weathering of time.
Everyone speaking of the Regigigas thing but the real question is:
How does he have a Blitzle in Emerald?

This theory is believable but I remember hearing somewhere that the punishment was given by Arceus himself as I believe that when Arceus created Regigigas, he was very lonely and decided to make the Regis we see today to accompany him but Arceus was the only one who could make the pokemon so he punished Regigigas and put the stones on him to give him the ability of slow start (and it's effects) and then sealed all the Regis away including Regigigas to be reawakened later and would pay for their master's (Regigigas') mistake. But there was a part of this story that I didn't think could be true but the first Regi was actually a Regi called "RegiAlpha" made by Arceus, who created all the Regis, but Regigigas first and then the rest. Arceus erased RegiAlpha for this and gave his first and most powerful creation (Regigigas) the slow start ability and then sealed him and the rest away, Regigigas with the stones and others, puzzles and what not.
gamefreak: gives arceus a guarenteed stab AND super effective move.

zacian has High atk and spd. and has inntrepid sword for a ability, mening that on switch in, they get a atk boost on one stage.
zacian RIPED UBERS(the tier for extremely powerful Pokémon) and got banned to anything gose(the tire only ocupied by mega rayquaza and arceus)

SLOW START, FINISH STRONG
for 4 turns, it halves the atk and spd. but on 5th turn, atk and spd doubles for 4 turns. then goes back to normal.
This is a fun theory, but it only really makes sense interpreting Arceus from an Abrahamic perspective, so I don't think it's true. Arceus is based on a few western mythologies, but its primary influence is Ame-no-Minakanushi, the first and emptiest kami of Shinto lore, in which names are not excessively important. Regigigas, being of the land, wouldn't make sense to have an excessively overt connection to Arceus in that regard.
Honestly, just change slow start so he starts out at his normal stats and then gets a free +2 to attack and speed on turn 5, that would balance him fine whe also keeping the berzerking function
Even if Regigigas draws from the Golem of Prague, it shouldn’t be 1:1 to it in any way. There are countless Pokémon that outspeed, easily tank, or overpower him, sometimes all three at once!
I think Regigigas at first was fine with the nerf, gen 4 was very much different than what we have now. I mean in the OU meta you had Salamence and the Lati@s twins banned to Uber. We also didn't have the power creep that we have now.
Also yes, I think Slow Start shouldn't be a thing anymore, it's long past time to get rid of it
What is said in the title is very obvious. it doesn't take a lot of breaking down and detective work to figure that out. Game freak is known for trolling in the pokemon games.
Honestly, I do agree with alot of the points said here with how it should be getting a massive buff after those 5 turns, since it would really gel well with the idea that 'you have awoken a titan of creation, something to be feared.' Also I guess as a sorta mini gripe, for a Pokémon fabled as 'The Colossal Pokémon' and something that towed entire CONTINENTS with ropes....it's goddamned tiny. The dude is smaller than some forms of Onyx even! Honestly, i don't know what goes into making a game like Legends:Arceus, but if I were able to change one thing in it, well...yeah it'd be removing slow start - but if I could change **two** things in there, well I would make Regigigas actually live up to the hype of being this COLOSSAL titan of destruction, on par with some depictions of Groudon and Kyogre at times. It'd give my favourite Pokémon a well deserved moment for all the crap it's been through
Regigigas has one of my favorite designs and I love it's cry in the Hoopa movie but I wish it was actually usable in competitive games because it is far to week

Regigigas is Normal type, it can not get super effective STAB hits, its other type moves, while they can get super effective hits, they don't get STAB, that is the balance, it will always hit 50% less harder than those who are non-normal type pokemon.

Essentially not having one would be a buff in an of itself

Um, no, just because Regigigas is a legendary that doesn't mean it deserves a BST of 670. You list off several Pokemon like giratina and rayquaza who are in completely different tiers than Regigigas. Both of those are restricted and Arceus is banned for being a mythical. Regigigas has no restrictions, it would easily dominate competitions if there was no nerf placed on it's stats. Now you could make a reasonable case that it doesn't need to nerfed in LA because there is no competitive scene, but that's as far as you can go. It does need balancing if it's going to keep those stats.
The problem is that Slow Start just makes Regigigas absolutely useless

@@rocketmidbus6297 If it's not already incredibly clear, I don't think it's balanced now. It's incredibly underpowered. It's stars are so high to justify the slow start ability. If it didn't have that ability, it would be broken, which is objectively worse than being underpowered.
I have a different theory about why Regigigas has such a terrible ability. But it's pretty unlikely now since I made it when primal reversion was introduced. Regigigas is the one who moved the continents around. My theory is that after that was done, he was allowed to do whatever he wanted. That led him to create the other regis. The humans of the time saw how strong Regigigas was and managed to seal him away through help from other legendary Pokémon sort of like the swords of justice or the legendary dogs. And because Regigigas was sealed away for so long, most of his power was lost. He became smaller, weaker, and slower.
But through the use of the other three regis, because regilecki and regidrago didn't exist at the time, the player could make an item that would allow Regigigas to reclaim some of its former strength. It wouldn't get much larger, but instead of having its attack and speed stat halved for 5 turns, it would become something of the opposite. Its stats would be increased by about 50%, and its new ability would either be pressure like so many other legendries, or an ability that boosted its stats when paired with other regis in battle.
Regigigas has somehow become one of my favourite legendaries because of its ability. I felt so bad seeing game freak just making this pokemon so terrible and i started to look into lore and stuff to see if there was a reason. Only to be very interested in the lore and ending up loving this Regi.

imagine when slow start ended it gained 1.5x or 2x attack regigigas ignored your commands and started blasting and using whatever moves it wanted
I think Gamefreak should buff Regigigas with Slow Start Lasting just 3 turns instead of 5 and once those 3 turns are over just be a turn each time you change Regigigas

it would be better if its bst was 600bst and stats were redistributed but instead of slow start its ability would double its speed and attack on the 5th turn.

This is my favorite pokemon. It is very unfortunate that Regigigas STILL has slow start. I really wish Regigigas had that ability taken away, but I suppose this is a decent explanation.
I like this idea, because he is awekening so it starts slow. But i think it should take less turns. Like 2.

i think better idea would be-
1st turn: 50% stats
2nd turn: 75%
3rd turn: normal stats
4th turn: 1 stage boost to all stats
5th turn: 2 stage boost all stats final

Regigigas, Regirock, Zapdos, Groudon, Landorus, Raiku, and Galarian Zapdos are my favorite legendaries. I do wish Regigigas had a better color choice though.

it’s way better in risk of rain 2, though it slow start May be extended to 10 kills instead of 5 turns, it’s easily quick
