  • So how much weight has all that wood added to our DIY self built campervan? Is our van overweight? Converting a van to a campervan using reclaimed wooden materials certainly racks it up! Whilst we are waiting for vanlife UK to become possible we get our van weighed!

    I would go with unistrut for your solar definitely lighter and just as secure than a roof rack! Plus you can add onto it when you get that kayak😉

  • @someoneelse7629
    @someoneelse7629 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, atleast for the ceiling I would go with a thin ply, but also doorcards, and cupbord doors does only need a wooden frame and a ply in the middle, and those wooden tabletops, they weigh a ton, so use a thinner one and add a rim around it to make it look thicker instead

    Hi really enjoy your videos, I recently weighed mine fully laden ready for the off(Conversion by Timberland) rated at 3500kg and found it was 40kg overweight.
    I recently bought an e-bike and then had to get a towball rack to carry it on as it was too heavy to lift onto the door rack.
    Anyway I've had to re-rate it to 3900kg with SvTech (£310) this also changes the taxation class so may be slightly cheaper for that, luckily I have C1 on my driving licence already which is also needed over 3500.
    It's best to take 3 weighments on the weighbridge Front and back axles and total.
    The maximums are on the plate mine is riveted under the bonnet, from memory mine is 2100kg front 2400kg rear (2015 Ducato 35 maxi)
    I'm enjoying watching your adventures in Europe, I did France - Spain - Portugal 2018-2019 from December to April thoroughly enjoyed it.
    I want to go back but have been stuck due covid.
    I particularly want to go back to Nazare in the big wave season Oct-Dec to witness this phenomenon (see TH-cam Nazare massive waves) there's a campsite within cycling distance but with steep hills hence the new e-bike.
    Best regards
    Jeff

    I enjoy and like your travel adventures and approach. Just to mention here, watching you fire up your motor. On a diesel engine start up, does anyone know of the reason to wait for the orange initial dashboard lights to extinguish before and then cranking the engine to start? Is it to pre heat the glow plugs? does it protect the fuel injectors? Does it save a starter battery crank time? I've been told starting a diesel engine after lights out is a positive action. Just noticed that and hope it helps. Otherwise, good job there.

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi nick, not too sure these days but I usually do it as a matter of course,as you did used to have to wait for glow plugs to heat up. In our citreon though the glow plug light goes off immediately but I still usually wait a little. To be honest the,now that vehicles have all these new fangled electrics I've given up trying to really understand them,it's made it impossible for novices to have a go at most things.

    Thank you for sharing this. Indeed - it is a subject which is not talked much about - but it is important, specially for self builders. In case it helps - the sound in the video is quite low, and seems to be mono - just on the left channel. But it is still watchable anyway. Thanks again!

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi seb, it's too often overlooked I think. You're right about the sound, my laptops playing up and I can't get accurate levels, also the mic we used in the van only recorded on the left channel for some reason, but didn't want to re shoot as then it wouldn't be real. Figured it was a short video so could get away with it this once lol. I'm not that great with audio, I'm used to photography where it's not an issue lol 😂 thanks for watching 😁

      Talking about weight - which ply thickness did you go for the walls in the garage area? I'm going to do my walls in ply, and as much as I want to save weight, 3.6mm seems too flexible. I think I'll have to go for 5.5mm.

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I had a mixture of both actually as I managed to salvage it from work, in the areas where I've used the really thin stuff I've just added a couple of extra battens to hold it more rigid

    • @sebxj25vm
      @sebxj25vm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess sometimes it is the case of just finding a way to use what is available :-) The canoe idea is cool - really nice to show up at a lake or river and have a paddle in the sunshine. The cheaper ones are almost like beach toys - it is worth putting some research in and getting one made of the stronger stuff. I've got a Z-Pro Tango and I'm very happy with it - but there are other manufacturers which do decent stuff as well.

    • @campervibe
      @campervibe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sharon, the start weight according to the log book was 2050kg so we have put a lot in lol!! Good luck with your build, from what I gather they are very rarely checked, my main concern was the extra fuel consumption lol!
