We timed this perfectly! - Life under our off grid barn whilst restoring old cottage.
This week we are making some modifications to our new off grid living space under our old abandoned barn.
Whilst we renovate our really old cottage in Ireland we are living off the grid on our land, taking our time to figure out what to do with our wonky stone walls doesn't matter, there is always a small project to be getting along with here on the abandoned farm.
Lessons learnt this week.. listen to your wife, it would have saved me having to correct this mistake on this DIY carpentry project.

AJ is telling you he's home. He's done walking. He's found his happy place and wants to guard it for you, and only wants an odd trip to the beach to jump the waves from now on. He knows you guys have work to do and he's freeing you up to get on with it. He just knows. This is why all dogs go to Heaven! They suss our needs before we do. Just like he'll know the optimum time to leave ye. He's just happy to see ye settled and happy. 😅❤

I had to let my boy go this week. He was 18. I was truly blessed to have him that long! Have to take care of the babies because they take care of you!

You can get a good feeling for people by how they treat their pets. Your kindness towards AJ says a lot. I'm glad he has such a nice retirement home.

I’m guessing AJ is refusing walks because of discomfort, maybe not actual pain. When a previously avid walker and sniffer refuses to walk, listen. Love your vids.

Honestly, no matter what you two are up to, I’m pretty confident you’ll have a loyal following. I’m madly jealous of the skill with a hand saw, to produce those beautiful mitres. I’m super proud of myself if I can get 90 degrees in two planes, with minimal chipping. But those shallow angles, practically on the rip, with a cross cut hand saw, are a whole other level.
I’m green with envy.
Apart from anything else, I’d be exhausted after doing the first one, (rough, crooked and twisted!), so trying to do the second would require a rest and a cuppa. By the time I’d failed at that one too, I’d be fit for bed.
Power tools are the only way I ever achieve a decent finish.
All of that said, tge chemistry between you two is an absolute joy to watch and I never get tired of it. Every single one of your videos has made me smile and, trust me, there have been times when that was virtually impossible.

It's a beautiful thing, to get to care for a dog in their elder years, make their life comfortable with little adjustments. You just reminded me of carrying my sweet old husky up and down stairs when she was 15/16 years old... when she was younger she used to drag me up entire mountains and still want to keep going. That's her in my TH-cam thumbnail, her name was Uisce which I am sure you know is Irish for water, I bet her and AJ would have gotten on like a house on fire.
Aw bless her, we have never had the privilege of looking after an older dog, our other one Wilson, he dies at only 8 yrs old unfortunately from cancer. It’s nice to be able to but also gutting at the same time
My dog will be 17 soon, he refuses walks on the lead but will amble around for half an hour in his own time 😂❤
She was gorgeous Kevin. I've been thinking about getting a Huskey but people say they're high maintenance. Any truth to that?
@@alidabotes6264high energy and high maintenance They have to be brushed almost daily to keep matts away . I have a lab mix and omg right now she sheds her winter coat and its everywhere even though i brush her all the time
@@alidabotes6264 I always thought of her as some mythical creature come to life, so graceful and elegant looking. Hmmm... high maintenance only that she had unending energy until she was maybe 15 years old, so huskies average around 12 years lifespans. If you can manage multiple long walks per day or a large fenced-in yard so your husky could burn off some of it that would help there. They are very intelligent and renowned to be escape artists, can jump over 6 feet from standing position so if you have low walls that would be a problem. When their winter coat is being shed, they need such a thorough brushing, do find some videos of what that looks like, and outside of those times of year, regular brushing but nothing excessive compared to any other longer furred breed I have had the fortune to share time with. Uisce (pronounced Ish-ka) was very affectionate, she always had to have me within her line of sight when she took her naps.
She knew words, understood their meanings, would talk back in that husky howl speak, understood hand gestures for sit, stay, lay down, wait, come, drop it, you name it. The intelligence was part of the charm. I was lucky in that I always had more than one dog so she always had a play partner which was very helpful in burning off energy. Don't think that would be an issue so long as you had time to walk your husky with decent walks. While every dog is has unique personalities, she very much had breed characteristics. Out of all the dogs I have had, she was my favorite, still dream about her 5 years later.
Do some research on their behavior, plenty of videos of them being somewhat crazy energized and bouncing off walls when they get zoomies indoors. Uisce never chewed furniture and somehow never damaged any while getting zoomies in the house but I have seen videos of huskies chewing up an entire sofa when left home alone all day. Watching a video like that, my thoughts go to things like, maybe that dog wasn't being catered to sufficiently, too much energy, boredom, loneliness, not enough walks. A breed bred to pull sleds for entire days, that is a lot of energy ;) I am no huge energetic person but she taught me to be healthier. Uisce got left at home all day and never destroyed anything so... take from that what you will. She was quite loopy as a puppy but for me that was adorable. If I were not looking after my elderly father as I am doing currently, I would have another one already. My next dog will also be a husky. For me, the perfect balance of temperament, affection, companionship, smarts.

Our dog is 5.5yrs old , called Stanley and is a lazy git, we have a large garden and that’s all he needs or so he thinks, he refuses point blank to go on more than one walk a day with my husband and he puts his paw on the lead and forces it to the ground and he just says nope! My sister in laws dog did the same but he also liked to lie in the middle of their tiny cul de sac and he wouldn’t move for any car and the neighbours were made to drive around him, he was a giant labradoodle and we lost him 2 years ago. He was so placid , lazy and our Stanley drove him nuts as a puppy wanting him to play all the time and hanging from his ears etc. I love the ramp you have made for him & girls you can see just how much you love each other and the unconditional love for your 2 fur babies. A- J is a handsome looking boy and Summer is a beautiful girl who is adamant she is going to make Louise run daily 😂 I love watching you both & the other van wow is it beautiful 😮😃 whomever wins it will be one lucky happy being. I’m going to take part as I would love the van with my husband & Stanley. I lobe watching because your cottage reminds me of my uncles cottage in Ireland where I spent many years in summers gone past, sadly hehas gone and I miss that old cottage and farm so much ❤

I’m the proud mum of 2 fantastic young women who ‘figure it out’ for themselves and have always believed they ‘can’ do it, whether it was travelling the world independently or putting together a little flat pack kitchen for my granddaughter or bookshelf for their homes. Greetings from Kent. (Germany bound). 7 hours driving and first thing we do is put you on. Watching you two is like looking at ourselves. The times I’ve made or done something just to have Lisa change it is unreal. Even when it’s been planned thoroughly together.
Free Louise! My husband, a very talented carpenter, started our kitchen 30 years ago! He doesn't want to spend any money on finishing the kitchen or roof, siding or driveways! He's not poor! Oh to have a wife like Louise!

I laughed so much at Summer hopping over that fence then racing off just in case Louise hadn't done enough physical labour already! AJ wandering around and watching progress from his bed was just perfect, keeping an eye on proceedings to make sure his ramp was up to standard. Our dog Molly is still fairly young but it is a breed that can have issues with hips and she has one leg slightly shorter than the others, so we have soft ramps for her for things like the sofa and stuff because she LOVES jumping 😭. It took her ages to use it properly even with training and not just leap over it from another angle, it's so funny how such clever animals can be so bemused by a ramp. I love all the things you are doing to make sure AJ and Summer have the best home and I am sure all your work will just make it even more perfect for you both too. Thanks for taking us along for the journey.
AJ is ready to retire. My little loved to go for walks but in her later years she was content to be home in the garden. Just keep loving him. There will be a big hole in your hearts when he's ready to leave. My little left 2 years ago and she is still missed every day. Glad you're able to keep AJ comfortable. ❤❤
The hole in the heart they leave is massive, we lost Wilson 5 years ago now and we still miss him everyday as well

Watching your dog trying to avoid the ramp reminded me of My little yorkie who passed away two months ago aged 15. She was having knee problem the past few years.I would lift her up & down into the car and into my bed. My sunken living room became a problem for her so I bought a hard foamy angled similar to the ramp you built. I held her and guided her up the 1st few days.It took her about 4 days before she realized the ramp was there to help her go up & down the stair.

I'm just amazed how my Yorkie has the exact same personality as my grownup daughter that live with me and sometimes when I'm in a hurry I'll even call her by my daughters name which of course gets me a stink eye from her😂

My 13 year-old Beagle/ JR cross is just like AJ. If he doesn't want to walk any further/ where you want to go/or not at all, he just stands still. If you then head back in the direction of home, he's all for it😂
Fab video, just echoing what has been said about AJ. We have a very disturbed rescue boxer who we have been working with now for 3.5 years. She didn't go out for about 6 months until she had built a tiny bond with us. People think we have to walk our dogs daily because that is what we have always done. All a dog wants is food, shelter and love. Dogs in the wild will only walk for food and shelter they don't just go for a stroll around. AJ is happy and content so please don't worry about taking him out, you only end up getting stressed and worry yourself. Grab an Emily snack and enjoy your wonderful home.

My thumbs and wrists have been talking to me after years of carrying stepping stones and lumber. You do have power tools but rock that hand saw like an old world crafter. Impressive. “Snacks!”You Can teach an old dog new tricks. Watching as ramp will stand alone up to threshold. He’s got his stairway to Heaven. Reminds me of when horses are ready to race back to their barn. Sometimes a thrill ride. Free Louise to buy a circular saw at least. Old Emily and Louise will be glad you did. Yes AJ is definitely knowing hes home. My Robbie was 17 and he hung around a long time until we got another pup and he just looked at me and smiled and layed down and that was it. Very beautiful moment that was hard to handle until i looked at it from the outside.

AJ's walkies refusals were so hilarious. Love the ramp. I'm sure he'll get used to it soon. If he keeps trying to jump off the side you could always put extra slopes off each side too.

To save you keep moving the ramp, get a couple of hinges and fasten a couple of boards together. Fasten the hinges to the top flat board and the couple of boards then you can just fold it over when you go out in the van

What a great video of Louise making the ramp for AJ. You make it look so easy. Seeing what you have done with the ramp. I know that when you can do the cottage it will look fantastic. It is great that Emily enjoys doing the shopping. Loved watching you chase after Summer trying to run away. It was good that you took a few days off so you don't wear youselves out.

But I challenged Lady Luck and bought 4 tickets for this beauty. Lady Luck hates me, but I challenge her all the same because that Camper is everything I'd love.... and there's even a little cubby for Loki cat to come along. ❤

I find it hilarious and not at all surprising that AJ now prefers to amble about his own yard to going out on walkies. Dude knows how to move at his own pace, and I respect that.
