- In this video I make a pilgrimage to the "real" survivor, Hugh Glass. Located about 12 miles south of Lemmon SD is a free campground that "bears" his name. With beautiful views and an incredible story, I humbly admit the days of a true adventurer are long past, but the little adventures we all can still take are well worth the effort.

You are 100% an icon. A damn living legend
Would the Travel Channel...Discovery Channel...PBS...please give this man a show?? This is so much better than 90% of anything you find on "regular" media.
In my humble opinion you deserve Emmy!
One of my finest storytellers on TH-cam format and perhaps anywhere.
Please someone give this man his own show! You rock bud!
Great video Slim. People often overlook these little gems when they travel through the prairies and Midwest. There is awesome beauty to be discovered in every topography. Loved your Hugh Glass dramatization.
Another awesome video! Anyone who questions whether or not that heat is "dry" or not, has never used a wood burning stove in their homes and it shows. You have to use a humidifier to keep things in your home from drying out. Lot of people just put a kettle of water on the stove or even a large pot of water.
Maybe that's why he boiled some taters. 😁
Blue Collar DIY We always kept a pot of water right on the wood stove itself....it would last perhaps half a day.....
its really phenominal when you put your wet boots bear it and all your other ensemble that comes off after being out in the snow and now youre in a tshirt warm as can be.
Thank you so much for you artful rendition of the Hugh Glass bear attack. Nicely done.
Liberated Lady couldn't have said it better✌
Your engineering always fascinates & your humor makes the explanations fun. Adding in the amazing photography & editing skills makes for a favorite channel. Much appreciated.
always entertaining! That bear sculpture looks fantastic, and your stove pipe solution is really clever. Thanks again and safe travels.
Thanks for the idea about that car charger CO2 detector 😊
I love how your always so optimistic all the time. You always find the positive in everything.
Wow! Thank you sir. That was an excellent tribute to Hugh Glass! Nice reenactment sequence as well!! Cheers!
Thank you for telling me about Huge Glass. I did not see the movie. Truly a piece of American history that should not be forgotten. PS..your meal looked great!!!
Informative, historical, humorous. All the elements of a beautifully produced video with wonderful narration. Thoroughly enjoyed it.🇨🇦
That was very interesting and a great camp ground also. A big thank you, Slim, for stopping and taking the time to explain and show off such a nice piece of country.
You Sir!
Are an AllStar explorer!
You have added so many places on my “to visit” list.
Thank You
Enjoyed the vlog very much. I agree with Cruising the Cut: You are a master story teller!
Slim, here we have yet another wonderful example of your work. Your observations (and the manner in which they are articulated) are brilliant. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, you really did a beautiful video depicting the iconic great prairies and emigrant trailways. You make me want to drop everything, get in my vehicle and immediately drive there this moment. Thank you Slim for your continued excellence in travelogue videos.
Ahhh... Glad you were able to get a pic of that Notorious Jackalope. Great as always - Thanks from WV!
Yes, a Wyoming jackalope at that!
Excellent and educational video! Thanks!
Hi SLIM ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO OF YOUR LIFE ADVENTURES. .TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS YOU 💖 😊
Slim, the content & creation on these videos are truly inspiring & motivational.
As a truck driver, your videos have given me a drive to get my own camper and stealth life going.
Keep 'email coming!!!
Due respect to Hugh Glass ... what a show Slim ... one of my favorites. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing a part of my home state that I have never been to and the story of Hugh Glass that I was not familiar with.......great video!
Slim. This has to be one of the best you have done. With the history lesson thrown in. A big “ Thank You “.
Thank you Slim, yet another Great video for us to enjoy.
You outdid yourself as usual slim. Great campsite and photography.
Good to see the review of your great stove creation Slim! Thanks!
As always, another great video and a history lesson to add to my own future travels. Thanks, Slim!
Your stove is absolutely ingenious.
FANTASTIC VIDEO, Slim!!!
This one had it ALL. “And the TH-cam Oscar goes to”...
A very enjoyable video Slim, again! You certainly are an explorer in your own right, and you always seem to share your day to day experiences in an interesting way. I really appreciate your efforts! Cheers!
Another enjoyable Vlog.. Even though I do not camp, I do enjoy your ability to keep your experiences first class. Thanks Again, Richard M.
You are legend Slim. A modern day nomadic Hugh Glass.
That was one of the best video's you have done , content & photography , !!!!! :-)
Good to see there are still jackalopes around! To see one is rare;to capture a picture, even rarer! Good job!
Very enjoyable.
One of your best videos yet. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for the video. Appreciate the efficiency of the woodstove.
Another great video! It is amazing how rugged the pioneers of the past were. 🙂
About 2 weeks ago, where I'm at, we had 3 days of heat over 100...one day was 106...I was asking how did they move west in covered wagons? dig post holes? (Which is what we did in 90° weather), the everyday life stuff!!. we're such "sissy-la-la's" now.
❤️
Great video Slim. I love your creativity and artistic approach when making videos.
What a great video. Thank you.
Wow, as a South Dakota native, this was a cool video. Seeing the pasque flowers was really cool. Many South Dakotans never see one in their whole life.
Beautiful night scene! Wowzer video as always. Your videos are well worth the wait!
Gosh, I love those perfect mornings. The dry heat is so essential from time to time. Going to look up that little Charger/Detector... looks good for my Mini RV. Cheers.
South Dakota is one of the TOP states to get residency in,
NO STATE TAX,
NO TAX ON SS INCOME,
NO TAX ON PENSION,
24 HOUR RESIDENCY
In Texas u have to live there for a year to get residency and Florida 6 months. Those states also tax friendly.
Eileen Murphy ... I can’t wait to become a citizen of that great state ( wherever it is) in about a years time. New York City has been good to me but I’m ready for a place won’t tax me in my old age and charge $13 for a warm beer at a baseball game.
Awesome video, SP. Your re-enactment was "grizzly". The campground looks like a great place to camp. The folks worrying about the woodstove not being dry heat have probably not ever lived with wood heat as their only heat source. I actually kept a kettle of water on my cast iron stove to add moisture to the air (and this was in NW Washington where it's always wet).
My father was a "mountain man" who built custom muzzleloader rifles and pistols. I grew up attending black powder Rondezvous where, as a young girl, I was enthralled by the tales of Hugh Glass, Jeremiah "Liver-eater" Johnson and other mountain men.
Yes indeed. Wood heat is indeed very dry we keep kettle on our stove as well.
Jeremiah Johnson wasn't the liver eater's real name, it was John Johnson. He had a vendetta against the Crows who killed his wife & his unborn child. He killed many Crow warriors & ate portions of their livers until the Crow finally sued for peace & Johnson agreed.
Just out of interest, I live in NW Washington too. are you in the Bellingham area?
You are the best storyteller videographer ever!
The quality of your videos is outstanding. It is obvious you spend a lot of time editing and writing the script. Thank you.
So well-done!! I loved this video. Thanks for sharing!! Monday mornings are my favourite. :)
What an amazing place. Great weather, natural beauty, good neighbors (wildlife) and what a great stove!
Desperate journeys is an awesome book i keep listening to it over and over.
I'm in Australia. You are the best tourist advertisement for Canada I've ever seen😀
Your version of the saga of Hugh Glass and the grizzly is orders of magnitude more honest and authentic than the nearly 100% bogus Hollywierd film version starring Lenny D. The entire video was up to your high standards as well. Well done, Slim!
You are always very interesting and so smart and you always make fantastic videos! Another wonderful job!
Hello Slim. Greetings from Mexico!
I've read all the replies up to this point.
Thanks to your artful video, I've learned enough about Hugh Glass to go to the library to check out the book, The Revenant, which I'm looking forward to reading.
I was somewhat surprised to see you still have & are using the Jeep. I thought you were thinking of getting something else & replacing it.
I'm going to try to track down & buy one of those 12V Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
Slim mentioned May, so I'm guessing that it's from before he made that more recent video about getting a new vehicle to replace the Jeep.
Another great video Slim, Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦
Very well done video.
Thanks, Slim, for the reply. That's a bummer. I figure your take on it would habe been just as interesting and amusing. Thanks for all you do.
When your hand hit the ground you got a standing ovation from us....Bravo Slim! Thanks. 👍👍👍😁😎
Great video. It makes me want to visit South Dakota. Your videos remind me of the Travelogue movies schools and churches rented and showed to the community when I was growing up. It’s a wonderful way to inspire more people to travel and explore.
Perfect timing for me to find this gem of yours! My son and I just watched The Revenant last night. Wow! What a brutal and beautiful film.
Great editing slim
Slim your videos are the highlight of my days after work thank you
You definitely have a flair for the dramatic with that reenactment!! What a story! Nice contrast to your 21 century camping with many comforts of home. Well done. Your cinematic & narrative talents are notable. Beautiful place. Thanks for sharing...loved the stove!! Glad you had the place all to yourself!!
I really enjoyed the feel and style of this video... thanks for taking the time to tell the tale..
I have to watch the video on the stove as im wondering what the "beans" in the cylinder were for. It be fun cooking with you.. lol
What he poured into the "cylinder" was wood pellets for a pellet stove.
... that was a very enjoyable video, Slim... Thanks to you Hugh & history... in a GOOD week, i maybe could make the 1 mile marker, before i died. ; )... the truth is, i should cut that by 2/3s... lol.. stay safe & healthy. See ya down the road & Thanks again for the video. ; )
Thanks Slim for sharing your wonderful adventures, Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦 be safe traveling, love ya ❤️🥰🇨🇦
I hope I can live like you do someday Slim! In the meantime, I appreciate being able to experience your adventures vicariously! Happy Traveling!
This, along with all your videos, was fantastic! I wish I could come up with better words of thanks and good job and all of that. And if I could I would give you a ton of thumbs up! These are such interesting and high quality videos and I look forward to more. If you had been my history teacher, I would have paid attention and learned something.
Love that stove! What a find..
excellent !! you rock!! safe joyful journeys ahead!!!!
Great upload. Thanks.
Most excellent my friend
Just was here last weekend with my granddaughter. It's a great place.
The 1971 movie "Man in the Wilderness" with Richard Harris is loosely based on Hugh Glass survival story.
Superb shot at 1:13 with lateral traveling! I guess it's was shot from the driver side while driving.. 👍🏻
Awesome Stove !

I did not know the story of Hugh Glass, I’m going to look it up now. Thank you.
Great video as always, safe travels. Thanks for putting quality above quantity.
Enjoyed your story about Hugh Glass. Liked seeing your stove pipe. You are a very creative man. Thanks for sharing.👍
Thank you ! for adding American History into your productions..
Your travels have been watched and some have learned about our

Always love your videos. Thanks again
"brown goo"! Too funny. Cool stove!
Great video! You are an artist and a good storyteller. Very enjoyable. Kudos!
Very well done Slim ! I really enjoyed the story, the scenery and the video. Have camped in the Badlands- but will do Hugh Glass next time I get to SD. Thank You !
A super educational video, Slim; I really appreciate it. Lovely hearing the story of Hugh Glass; indeed, what a survivor -- 190 miles, 6 weeks, with a broken leg and severe bites! Wowwww. Y'all Be Safe!
Have you read the novel, "The Revenant"? Truly riveting.
