- Padre Island has one of the longest stretches of undeveloped beach anywhere, and a good portion of it is open to free camping. There is however a catch, as you will find in this video!

Who the heck votes these videos down? Slim is one of the very best vloggers on TH-cam, his lifestyle and outlook on life is to be appreciated 👍🏻
I find it odd too.
There are trolls who go around voting videos down just because. No life I guess.
Solent74 I agree, they must be jealous.
I will admit that I am jealous of slim! But i am also 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 of him
Cyndi Foore I have to say, there’s so many great replies to my original comment. Really happy to see Slim is well supported by us 👍🏻
As someone who has been going to Padre Island since I was an infant, I’m 65 years old now, this is one of the best ones you’ve ever done. You found the beauty and majesty and the grace of the place that is always in a state of change.
🔥Your narration is like great poetry! "The ocean protects its inhabitants one minute and expels them the next... Forever changing, alluring, admired but never trusted."
Scott O reminds me of the old Mutual of Omaha documentaries....lol
Total Mutual of Omaha!
Do you write and practice your own scripts or do you and lib it?
I backed it up and replayed this part, to listen to it again. Thank you for the fantastic, thought-out narration, Slim!
Continuously one of the best channels on You Tube. That sunrise....WOW!!
I live in Copus Christi. Having watched your videos in the past, it was so wonderful to see you enjoying one of our local treasures. I hope during your travels you’re able to visit again someday. Texas has many wonders.
I'm a real introvert but if I ever see you in my travels I am going to grin and wave so hard. I feel like I owe you so much, not just practical information and insight, but keeping the dream alive and reminding me why I do this- and I do do this, tent or otherwise- I've slept on the beach when I didn't even have that, so- it's probably a good thing at my age I finally got this travel trailer. Sooner or later the bears, cows, or tweakers would have caught up with me, lol. And my Jeep will take me to see *stars*.
Me too!
True introvert here🙋
dislikes are from people with noisy generators
LOL... Likely.
Yeap! right!
LOL
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 spot on!
Dislikes are people from Texas. It horrible except in the summer. Really hot!
Padre Island is my favorite south Texas vacation spot.
I love seeing your notifications! You’re videos are always awesome, I’ve never seen a bad video from you. Any TV channel would be lucky to have you as a series TV show! “Adventure America with Slim Potatohead”. You have a magnificent narrative voice and always so informative and ... relaxing! I’m continually tempted to jump in my Jeep and head out for my own adventure after watching your videos .... Thank you for taking us along on yours!!!
Slim is definitely as good as the best travel show on television.
Oh Slim..I thought at the very end- you'd imitate those little birds and power walk across the beach🤣😂🤣😂🤣😍
Apart from the polish of the videos (including audio), what I like about you videos is that the Aliner is 'there to be used' and not kept 'wrapped up in bubble wrap all pristine and clean'. You use it and have fun. Our 1991 Gobur is scratched, worn seals, and definitely not new! lol. We love it! We use it and have fun.
So beautiful -I had to watch it twice!
You are really good at narrating your videos.
i was there about 2 months ago priceless a gift from GOD
Excellent video this week Slim! Thanks for sharing with us!Have a great week!
Nice! I boondocked here a couple weeks ago and woke up day 4 with the ocean slurping up my van and tent. Dug several trenches that morning but gave up as Mother Nature was much more productive. Like you, I decided to wait out the storm by my lonesome.
I’m new to exploring so during the height of the storm, I asked myself “what would Slim Potatohead do?” So, while others evacuated, I settled into my camp chair, sang the theme song from Gilligans Island and watched the “pelican squadrons” do their work. EPIC day so thank you SP for the inspiration!!
That big bird was a Great Blue Herron. One of my favorites
October 5, 2024: Padre Island is showing such an incredible beauty. Again such smart ideas with the one for your shoes! Genius! Love your narrating with such detail that we as the listener are truly given a vivid picture. Love how you wear T-shirts with the areas you are in. I love this color. Mr Slime you are definitely a pioneer with style.
Seems you are the King of the Beach! Great plan with remaining hooked up. I agree with the sea. I am originally from Hawai’i and when I return home I just love to sit on the beach or a fisherman dock that my dad use to go to. He has been called home to heaven for many years but is a Canadian also from Pickering. Thank you in so many ways of connecting with my Dad through your video’s of Canada and how you look at life. Much as he did. He was in the Army for twenty years but he gave us a life from camping, exploring the woods to mountains. Mom who is with him now gave us the encouragement in being creative. Both did camping so well with ten of us. I am the oldest. Simpler days missed. Thank you.
I have started to follow your vlog, you were recommended to me by a guy who does ‘cruising the cut’ another vlog of equal ilk to your out door visual vignettes. I like the way you present, I love your independence and that you are comfortable with your own company. To balance the beauty thats inside us, against the beauty of nature. I am Ex Forces 28 years. I still enjoy mountaineering at the age of 59, I enjoy that sense of tranquility, you and the mountain or the outdoors. You have an excellent way of presenting, it’s quite hypnotic, but importantly you are a window (via TH-cam) to nature and that inspires people to get off their bottoms and do something. Keep this great work up, yours, a kindred spirit from the UK. Ps three things currently enjoying the Cornish coast walking and camping., I love your a frame ‘instant civilisation, and I recommend a vl9g called “two feet forward’ these two are truly inspirational. Best Gary a new fan.
Thanks Gary, glad my enjoyment of travelling and nature is inspiring others like you. Happy and safe travels to you! SP
Used to camp at port Aransas on the beach!
Thanks for the memories👍🏻
Your narratives of the your videos are beautiful. Poetic.
Thank you for posting your vidoes. I´ve been watching them for some time now and they always give some kind of peace and relaxation. It´s sort of like getting out there myself.
I live in Sweden and it's great to be able to get to know your nature a bit more.
My favorites is when you do repairs and modifications to your trailer.
Have a great week Mr Potatoehead
Martin Lindholm I’ve been to Sweden, Hogfors in 1985. It was beautiful and Stockholm is a fabulous city.
If you like the repair type videos, you’ll like another RVer channel called ‘Love Your RV’.
Spent a whole winter there in 2000, LOVED it. I was in a 21' sailboat though.
Nice photo shots of the shore birds.
I am always glad to see a new TH-cam video from you, you fast became a favorite for me. I always learn something new and your photography, videography and drone footage are always enjoyable. Thank you.
I probably do not need to say this: By the way, be extremely careful camping "on the beach". I have lived in WA, OR and CA. I have seen several vehicles lost in the beach sand and tides.
Thanks Marcia! I don't use drones however, as they disturb the wildlife. I find less intrusive methods for high angles. SP
So glad you got a chance to stay there! Port A is my husband's favorite place on Earth. We were so sad when the hurricane hit. So thank you for letting us visit with you!! ♥️
Was beginning to wonder how well an Aliner could float! Well done. Thanks. 👍😎
We spent Christmas on Padre Island at the National Seashore it was amazing. We watched and enjoy a old and frail pelican everyday standing guard from the dunes of the beach. I grew up playing and adventuring on the Gulf Coast Texas shoreline.
What a delitghtful video! Could almost feel the sea spray.
Corpus Christi is one of my favorite places to camp, I have friends who live right on North Padre Island. There’s an amazing German Bakery right up the road from where your video was shot. Love your videos Slim!
Out of all of Slim's videos, this is now my favorite. How beautiful and calming. For some reason, my pup Sunny, rescued near Chico, CA, is sensitive to bird calls and sounds. Could be she was near one of the bird sanctuaries down there. Hearing the seagulls, she ran to the patio sliders and looked up. We're in Oregon!
Thanks for doing what you do, Slim!
I don't comment much on videos but I've watched a lot of yours and wanted to day thanks. The places you go, the natural beauty you share, the boondocking tips (and more) are so enjoyable.
You are my hero. It takes a lot of spirit to camp that close to the mighty Ocean. Wow still can't believe you did that. Stay safe my friend. We all want to see more great videos. Mahalo for all your hard works.
I lived in Corpus Christi 20 yrs ago. I absolutely love that beach !!! Thanks for sharing.
Liked the videos even before i watch. Ur videos are always awsome.
Me too
Yes, me too!
Ditto. Fresh cup of coffee. Like. Full screen. Play.
Naga: Dittos on that. I liked even before I watched.
I grew up in South Houston, and we spent many a nights in Matagorda, Surfside, Galveston, and the local islands and beaches. Spent lots of nights by campfires watching the tides go in and out as we camped. "Beer Sunday" was always a time because beer was only sold from Sunday at noon on, so we planned on that after a Saturday night partying. Thanks for bringing back fond memories of my buds and our '66 Lincoln FLYING down to the beach to awaken to some beautiful maidens waiting for us to arrive.
Love your videos Thanks for the good memories I stayed on Padre Island almost 40 years ago my two girls with four and five thanks for the good memories I'm in SC now too bad you can't turn the hands of the clock back great memories
While I time out the 2 months leading up to my retirement and my camper, I enjoy these videos while still at the grind. How anyone could give them a thumbs-down is beyond me. Probably kids.😀
Amazing how fast the Aliner can be set up
Fantastic! The ghost crab stare down made me laugh. Great job, as usual.
I've been to beaches around the world, but as a die hard Texan, the northern part of South Padre Island is my favorite. Drive past the monstrous hotels and restaurants until the highway ends with giant sand dunes. Get into 4 wheel drive and head north on the beach. Few go that far and it is like Heaven on Earth. Dawn, dusk and full moons are the best. Always reminds me of The Little River Band: Cool Change, for I too was born in the sign of water. Can't wait to get back. Thanks for posting, I really appreciate your videos and educational tips. Don't forget drive thru car wash. That really helps with salt on undercarriage. Thank you! ✌
Beautiful sunrise!
You can run the National Seashore for 60 miles down the beach to a big jetty where everyone congregates. We usually camp anywhere from 20 to 40 miles down. Area is called Big Shell. Love to surf cast and star gaze. No one around for miles. We pull a lifted single axle travel trailer with large tires. We usually stay for 3 to 7 days at a time. A good 4x4 and a weeks worth of supplies are needed since going to the store is not practical. Always take 2 shovels, a tow strap, winch, compressor, lots of water, gas and everything else you might want or need. Safe travels.
Excellent video thank you! There are many beautiful scenes of the sea, beach and wildlife on Padre Island. I loved that poetic ending with the music. As an aside it is amazing how quickly you can put up the roof and walls of that trailer 5:10.
I nominate you for the A frame modifications/inovattor award for most useful A frame modifications 👍👍👍 Thanks for sharing and expanding my knowledge base.
Thank you for taking us along 🙂
I love falling asleep and waking to the sound of the waves and can't wait to visit Padre Island again. Thank you for the gorgeous photography of our beautiful coast!
9:00 Imelda Marcos footwears. You nailed it, hahaha...
I do not have adequate words, only boring used-up ones, to describe your videos, Slim. Thanks for taking us along and for your excellent videography. Those birds were, well, again I have no adequate words to describe their beauty.
You know I think I like your videos because they remind me of the program Mutual of Omaha nature show that use to come on. I so loved that show. Thanks again stay safe.
valeriawson yes!! I have been racking my brain thinking of the show , thank you! Such a great show!
Exactly! Just need's a Jim Fowler (Marlin Perkins side kick) to go do some crazy stuff for the camera!
That sun rise reminds me of growing up on Lake Michigan Coverter Beach and Camp ground thanks for sharing this with us
Peace and solitude are vastly underrated...
Free parking at its best, beautiful and relaxing, a thumbs up from me.
Beautiful Video.
Thanks for the video I felt like I took a mini vacation and the sound of the ocean was amazing. You are the Merlin Perkins of TH-cam!
I can listen to waves all day
Loved seeing the varieties of birds. I look forward to seeing your videos.
Your living the life Slim!!!!! Thanks
hello from the Ozarks another informative entertaining journey. safe, health joyful and successful adventures ahead
12:47 For those who don't get to see the Gulf coast, these are oil production platforms. They aren't "drill rigs" as the wells are already drilled and these are the permanent platforms that pull the oil out and send it to the mainland. I worked as a captain on a supply boat, supplying these platforms (or ones like them) with food, water, fuel, materials, and shift workers for 10 years after hurricane Katrina. There are production platforms out beyond 200 miles and spread about four to six miles apart - all over the western Gulf. The weather in Slim's video is typical for March, April, and mid May. It can blow from the east like that for days on end, with nothing to stop it or slow it down, producing waves 10 to 15 ft off shore. BUT in June, July, August, and sometimes even into September the Gulf from the Mississippi River outlet to the Texas coast become a huge bath tub. Storms are local thunderheads that don't have enough time to whip up the seas. I've seen fewer, smaller waves 150 miles out then the rain puddle in your driveway. It's like running your boat across fresh ice or the surface of a mirror. Imagine sitting on the beach and watching a full moon rise over a sea of glass - it's spectacular, but usually only happens in July and August. Well to be honest it also happens in late November, December, into January, but it normally get's so foggy at night on shore you can't see it.
@Slim: I highly recommend, if you can stand the heat and humidity during the day, to return here in the summer months. The water get's too hot for enjoyable swimming but the beach at night is mystical. The abundant bio-luminescence would make for some amazing photography and worth the daytime sweat.
Great job with the poetic commentary and video editing.
Lots of great footage! Especially enjoyed the lightening and wildlife. And what a beautiful sunrise. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic video Slim, very well presented, and expertly narrated and edited. Easily one (of many) of my favourite video's you have produced. Many thanks Slim, from Ireland, on a dull blustery day.
I enjoy all your great videos, but this one I have to say is my favorite. I'm a beach, bird and sunrise person and this one spoke to my soul. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Beautiful. That heron was stunning.
"It's soothing. It's relaxing", he yelled. ;)
I love that you've gotten top enjoy even such a tiny portion of my home, Texas. Big Bend is a magical place. Once you get it in you, she calls you back again and again.
Beautiful sun in that video. Thanks. Mr. Slim.
Mother nature is just beautiful.. a sunrise, a sunset and thunder...you captured it beautifully. Those oil rigs looked like something out of a Star Wars movie with them peeking thru all the mist.
I really enjoy your narration of your videos. And, the content is always interesting. Keep giving us these gems to watch! The sunrise reminded me of a Bible verse that says, in part, “Joy cometh in the morning.” For it was truly a joyous sight.
Liked all videos. I still think you are the best. Thanks Slim. Wishing you the best.
Thank you so much for taking us on these journeys with you. You are my best youtuber. Very professional.
Brilliant! Slim..... you are as relaxing to listen to as the waves of the sea.
Beautiful shots as always. Love travelling and camping with you. Thank you!
The insulating noise of the surf. I was there a year ago had the same concerns of tide sand and salt as you. I chickened out and opted for the camp ground only my experience there was much better than yours. Made friends with a bunch of wind surfers, that is apparently one of the premier wind surfing sites in the lower 48. I tried my hand and wound up spending 3 days there before going on to Big Bend. Great video like your perspective.
Another wonderful episode.
this is one of my future destinations. your photography is so good. i kept pausing it to snap pics of everything on the beach, the water & the sunset. thank you!
I can see the genuineness in your personality and videos they are great and I always watch them
Very nice Slim, but you had me worried when the tide was coming in 😯 I don't think I would have been able to sleep very soundly that close to the ocean. Just a little further away from the waves for me, and I'm in heaven Thank you for sharing 😎
What a beautiful video! The lightning was spectacular. I’m definitely along for the ride ☺️
Wonderful video, Slim. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, for the beautiful and artistic images, and for all the hard work.
If there was a award ceramony for TH-cam Videos and creators, you Sr. should be the winner.
Hello Slim,
Another great video,
We spent a few days there in March on our way home from Arizona. We loved it, but were nervous about driving on the beach, and had to wash the salt air residue off the van. The scenery, bird life , and freedom from generator noise made it all worth it.
Take care,
Ben from Nova Scotia
No complaints there. Looked like a relaxing time.
I am in love! This is the first time I have seen this area or this fella, both evoke this peaceful and nature filled feelings. I have yet to be mobile with my three little dogs, but I will definitely go there when I am. Thank you so much for this beautiful video!
I love camping on Padre Island and Mustang Island the pounding surf always puts you to sleep. Great video
Thank you slim
Lovely. Reminded me of the days I used to live in Galveston in the late '70's.
You have the greatest voice for this type of video.I feel like I am watching a documentary. Or special interest show. I love Padre Island.
Nicely done on the bird shots. That big heron was beautiful. And I enjoyed "The Beatles" too.
Every Monday , I keep checking my alerts for my weekly treat of Slim the potato head. I can’t wait until I get my Aliner on the road. Slim has such a cool life.
One of the top shelf TH-camrs knocks it out of the park again. Thanks
Another great offering from you, Slim. You, my friend, are one blessed man. Much love & respect from St. Johns, Michigan.
That is an awesome spot! Thanks for taking me along.
Thank you!
We camped on Padre Island back in 1971 as part of a circumnavigation ( by road) of north america . We had lived in Alberta Canada , which is pretty dry and five days camping on Padre brought out all sorts of rust spots on the old VW ! Not a soul when we arrived there and didn't realise it was American Independence Day coming up so woke up to hundreds of other happy campers with rigs all dwarfing our VW and little two person tent . Good memories and a lovely place .
Hi Slim What a wonderful Sight of the Birds Take care ☺💖💖💕
Another great vlog ...you really capture the ‘feel’ of the location
Slim your videos and narration just keep getting better and better. You make a barren strip of gray seashore look like an alluring wonderland. (No insults meant towards the beaches of Texas, since I'm a Texan myself, but our beaches aren't known for clear blue waters or white sands.) Hope you had a chance to camp at the Davy Crockett National Forest and went through Rusk, Nacogdoches and the Tyler areas. Beautiful hills and piney woods, especially in Jacksonville and Brownsbo.
Lovely! Thanks
