    I respect you for jumping through all these hoops and sharing the information! I’m a very stringent, methodical gamer and I just had to stop playing Starfield. The amount of bugs in the game simply doesn’t give me motivation to proceed (not to mention taxes my patience and immersion), even though I’d like to. I decided to take a hiatus for a while and then consider returning later…much, much later.

      The good news is that there are some very good redemption arcs in the gaming industry. I've enjoyed several over time. The bad news is people have hit these issues and found themselves right where you are. That's understandable. The better news is there are many solid titles available including classics we've played for years. Thanks for checking out the video.

    This bug has kinda spoiled my first NG+ for me. I never experienced it in my first playthrough, but this run I saved up a bunch of creds then spent like 700k transforming the Frontier into a C-class monster. It got bugged and no matter what I do, my shield is stuck at 1500. Having less than the base shield rating with or without crew is very annoying.
    It's the only game breaking bug I've experienced but it's a major bummer because building cool ships and getting into dogfights/boarding enemy ships is one of my favorite parts of the game. Hopefully they address it soon, because I don't see myself doing another NG+ unless it gets fixed.

      I had a retrofitted Claymore III in an earlier video with a shield rating of 900 (using a 28T that should have bottomed out at 1500 before my bonuses). In short, it got worse over time.

      @@kineer I also have a Claymore III that I put a 28T on. It's shields are stuck at 960. It was the first ship I upgraded this playthrough. When I googled a way to fix the bug, someone had mentioned that it would fix itself with ships the game gives you, which is why I upgraded the Frontier. Still got bugged.
      Have you found any way of fixing it besides not letting it get bugged in the first place? I also read that to fix it you have to take the crew off your ship, wait 48 hours in game, and do a hard save off the ship then reload that save. But that didn't work for me on either ship. I'd like to not use console commands but that seems to be the only way to fix it.

      All I'm aware of are console commands on PC. I'm aware of them but I don't promote them on the channel merely because it takes a slightly more technical user to be comfortable with them. If you are then it's worth looking at. I'm playing around on my second character to check.

    You rock! If you want the Frontier or any number of Starborn Guardians gone the Ship Duplication Glitch can create a copy of another ship that can then be sold. Do several saves to protect your progress, and its slightly unstable while you are completely eliminating those new ships. Save and Restart your device afterwards 😅

      I think the best [current] work-arounds are as you described, the duplication glitch on Xbox and console commands on PC.
      I've tested the PC side and it works, but some people are reporting residual effects over time. Not seen those myself and no judgement from me on any technique people are comfortable using themselves.
      I don't advocate directly for them, just because it's a personal choice and I don't want to put a bunch of disclaimers in my videos, but they are working for people.
      For now, I'm just stealing more ships and making videos for like-minded space travelers. Thanks for watching! ;)

    Have been working around this in current playthrough with console commands. Constantly having to reset the shield multiplier properly as well as the targeting lock time. Default target lock time should be 3.0 and then it is reduced by perk bonuses. If I set personal shield multiplier it does not apply to my ship when I enter. If I set ship shield multiplier then the shield stays at full value whether I am on board or not.

    Had 3190 without any companions on my 1st playthrough with the Razorleaf, never seen that before, and never got it that high again after NG+ even with Omari.
    Also the others are effected as well like Payloads, Fusion etc.

      I've seen 3040 on that ship a couple of times, but it doesn't stay. That reflects another 10% bonus on shields, as if it's counting Ezekiel at the same time as Omari. Definitely inconsistent. Became a bit of a rabbit hole for me.
      I watched the other stats from time to time, but didn't notice them bugging out. They were very much dependent on being on the ship to see the total values. I have a couple of small boosts from magazine perks as well. So my storage bonus looks higher than 50%. No reason to believe they are any better or more consistent though. It's the big drops that get my attention.

    This bug has been in the game for a very long time maybe even since release and it still hasn't been fixed. It's also not the only bug that has been around for that long. There's a good chance we'll get another beta patch next week and I hope this one will finally address the more complicated bugs in the game.

    Great video. I had stopped playing for a few months and came back for the new patch. I had never experienced the bug until after the patch and didn't even know about it. On top of that I thought this was one of the things they fixed, but obviously not. I'm level 122 and NG+ like 13, 14, now? This was my universe I wanted to keep. Looks like I'm leaving the game again. So sad 😢

      I just caught up and realized I replied in the other comment. I had a ship rebuilt from the ground up (nearly 1M credits) that it bugged. This bug was filed with BGS back in Sep. '23 on their discord and was just addressed.
      I wont' rant about it but some progress is still slightly better than no progress. :)
      I'm OK so far, but have noticed some people interpreting the constant changes of shield values when you assign crew, enter/exit ships as related to the original shield bug. I haven't investigated further. My ships are OK so far.

      @@kineer Hopefully they stay that way. If it happens again once I get to the next NG+ I'll probably be done with the game, as ship building is my favorite part of the game.

    I've tried everything from Reddit and my own guesses and what not, but I feel like no matter what the ship bug eventually comes for all my ships. I think the core of the problem is somewhere in the skill tree. I'm fairly certain the Targeting skill is also bugged and the time to lock on to targets changes over time, but since there's no number we can see it's hard to really notice.

      You nailed the core issue. We are looking at a black box from the outside. It has a lot of buttons and switches which are labeled in one way, but seem to behave in a different way. Correllation isn't causation and all that too. I see two things that seem connected, but there can be another hidden factor more closely associated. :)

    Your videos are awesome. I know that when assigning crew in space messes stuff up. I always try to do it from a planet. Don't have a clue why it happens. I truly thought they fixed this, but nope.

    Had an interesting bug last night playing, I build a very expensive ship and whenever I landed on a planet I could not exit the ship from the cockpit, or get up and and exit from the door. Tried my other ships and they seemed to work. I did notice they had made a lot of changes on the fly it seems. Later on another ship I went to jump on top of it and the top wasn't where it was supposed to be, but about 20 feet higher. I even tried building another ship and had the same exiting problem. On the bright side I did have way more ships on planets. Hopefully they work this out.

    I guess I will just stick with my current plan of capturing the first top tier ship I can find, minor mods and then use that for the rest of the NG+ session. If only you could do some minor mods to the guardian. Like add a bed and mod the weapons. I really like its invisibility teleportation thing that it does when you boost. It also feels fast and maneuverable, but its weapons are wet noodles slapping the bad guys and then running out of steam really quickly...

      I think with practice the Guardian can survive combat, but the inability to upgrade puts a wrinkle in my approach. Hence my need to find Claymore or similar relatively early. I also like having a workshop and storage.

    I get the shield bug every time I'm blowned up and the auto save kicks in. I know your testing didn't show that, but that's my case. I have...Sara, Barret, Andreja, Omari.

      I have a non-NG+ save (level 103) where I have those companions available. That sounds like a reasonably controllable test for me (and I'm curious).
      Ultimately though, I think I'll be treating ships as mostly disposable assets as I cycle through NG+ games. I am a path toward NG+10, primarily to max out my "jedi-space-shouts", but am not in a hurry. I will continue to adapt the presence of these bugs. There's still plenty to do in the game so far.

    Has this been fixed? I remember it happening to one of my favorite ship builds over a year ago. Glad you went through all of the testing to figure out exactly what went wrong. I just stopped taking any crew at all.

      They claimed (in patch notes) to have fixed it, but I didn't go back and do any extensive re-testing. Before that patch, I adopted a tactic of farming Claymore III's when available, updating them and if (when) the bug hit, pitching them and rebuilding another. In short, I stopped taking the risk on custom ships.
      On my earliest custom ship build (non NG+), I did fix it with the console, but haven't looked at that one or played it in a while.
      Long way of saying, I don't know. Hard to say it never happens again. I've not seen it.

      @@kineer It seems to have been fixed after flying in a ship with Vasco for a while. I've reloaded several times and even acquired the Shield Systems rank 4 perk without my shield values bugging out.

      I can confirm that the bug still exists for older saves. I have full crew and full shield skills and all my ships are still bugged. Even after downloading the latest patch. I have a 1600 shield equipped on my custom hauler and my shield rating is 960. Maybe the fix was preventive but can confirm it doesn’t fix previously bugged ships.

      @@scottofficer8772 Yeah, it doesn't surprise me that whatever fix they did wasn't retroactive. If you're on PC you should be able to permanently fix it with console commands.

    I’m NG+10 customized the Mantis ship and got this bug and am stuck at 1600 shield. It sucks and am hoping they fix this.

    Hmm, I’ve never been able to get my ship above the base rating of the shield generator I’m using and I’ve got lvl 4 in shield systems plus Omari. I have this bug or something similar.

    Every single ship I own has a bugged sheild system. So I just ignore it at this point

      I am much closer to a 'disposable ship' approach now than ever. Since I'm cycling through NG+ I have a natural reason to not invest in complex ships. Just as Outposts will mature in the game and I'll return to them later, perhaps custom ships will mature as well. There's still enough to do elsewhere in the game for me.

    Hey kineer first off thanks for your time figuring out this problem I lost a lot of ships this way.
    And I wanted to ask you if you find out more information could you make a video with a list of what to avoid.
    My fix so far is the ship duplication glitch the duplicate will be fine and I sell the bugged one

      I'm waiting until the next beta comes out to see if it's in the list. For now, taking notes and have done some testing in a different save (pre-NG+). I don't want to sink a lot more time into it unless they continue to kick the can down the road. This bug has been 'known/reported' to BGS a long time ago so I'm at a loss on why they didn't address it yet.
      So yes, I might do another video on this in the future. Waiting to see if it's worth it and getting back to some game content for a bit.

      1-don’t save in space
      2-stay away from companions with shield perks
      3-fix with duplication glitch if you are on console

    This bug has occured for me twice now with two different characters. I have a C class ship with shields at 4800 and I have a B class ship with shields at 4350. I've been trying to understand how I did this. I did not reassign anyone. The C class ship is full of crew but the B class is just Vasco - he also affects shield strength. I've tried and tried but I can't duplicate it intentionally. Ususally I notice it has happened after I've made changes to my ship at the ship technician.

      Based on my math, there are no shields and skill combinations (player and crew) that could get you those values.
      I guess at least if the bug is giving you higher shields it's not making the game more difficult.

      Steam says this BETA won't be released May 15th.
      I've tested the shield bug on the Frontier with Omari and it did NOT trigger again.
      Fixing existing bugs is always a dice roll though and some things are only resolved by going through the Unity (essentially starting a new game of any kind).
      They fix the thing that breaks it at a point in time, but don't go back and resolve all issues. Sometimes they do, but I don't count on it.

    Ok, reading through some comments it appears it is fixed if I go for like my 13th-14th NG+? (I've lost track), but I've built a whole fleet, did all the faction quests, and have a huge outpost network, even a zoo! This was going to be my final universe and I don't want to throw it away, but I guess I will if it's actually fixed.

      I'm not sure you have to go through Unity again for the shield issue, but others maybe?
      I have the same general plan, to hit an NG+ (10 or higher) and settle down, but I've concluded that as they patch they will fix some bugs going forward, but only occasionally be able to fix things in saved games. So it depends on which bugs I trigger and I have gone through the Unity to move on from a save where a major quest was broken.
      At one point I tested console commands (PC) that would reset the multipliers for shields and they did work. When the bug was still active, that was a temporary fix and some players were saying other issues came up. I've not gone back to test those and since Xbox players don't have access, I try not to focus on those for solutions.
      In the meantime I've adopted a 'disposable ships' strategy. I never really wanted to farm ships for cash really either (and credits don't seem to be a real issue), but one of the reasons I started farming ships was because of bugs like this. I try to play vanilla, w/o relying on console commands, but .... :)
      My reasoning is simple, as long as the game has these issues with ships, I'm comfortable flexing the edges of features to compensate for the extra hassle it causes. So I farm ships [primarily using save scumming], cash in a few to cover the upgrades when I have to discard something I've already customized. Xbox players seem to use a duplication glitch. No judgement from me there. Try at your own risk.
      I primarily focus on enemy ships but could do the same with purchased ships. It's the unique ships that can cause a problem if they get bugged and can't be fixed, but most of those aren't end-game.

      @@kineer Yep, although the ship I lost was a unique ship that I had extensively modified :( Anyway, I just decided to go through again and got the "Constellation Kids":universe, which, while cute, is useless. So, I guess I'll be speed-running this one. Hopefully the next is a standard one, as my "permanent" universe I want to do every faction and major quest line.

    question do you think it's the ship that's bugged or the shields? if it's the shields or a combination of the ship and shield the gets bugged maybe selling and buying a new shield generator would fix the ship.

    It's been a well known bug for months and they still haven't fixed it. So I don't they ever will. But maybe when mod support finally comes out, a modder will fix it. I heard it could be fixed with the ship duplication glitch. Does that still work or was it patched out?

    Question for those of you still playing. My ship clutter vanishes after editing my ship and does not respawn like it used to. Is this happening to everyone or only certain players?

      I switch ships a lot and end up selling a lot of Misc items from inventory regularly. Free 💰 but with the interface it's tedious. As you accumulate more cash that small amount of junk gets old. Dumbells and weights take up valuable space on smaller ships.

      @@kineer Thank your for replying, but that isn't quite what I'm asking. For example on the Frontier there is the broken helmet over the bed. If you edit the ship, the helmet and everything else gets put into the cargo bay, but after a bit of time the helmet would respawn over the bed along with all the other clutter in their original places. I'm asking if that still happens to players because it stopped happening to me, and my ships' interiors feel barren without the clutter.

      Imagine there are (only) 3 ways to trigger this bug. This video is mostly about one approach which I can repeatedly test with variations on crew members. My final test was a brief test of another unusual method. But what about method 3 for triggering this bug? What if there's a 4 or 5? That's the issue.
      I will be treating ships largely as disposable assets going forward until BGS addresses this. I will avoid Saving+Restoring while in space. In addition, I will likely push my own skills up and ditch the crew altogether. Well at least any crew with 'ship related' skills. That leaves a handful of odd companions that I can travel with and [potentially] not worry about. Andreja seems safe for now (if you have Constellation). It you're in an alternate universe like me, Jessamine, Betty, Marika, Simeon, Dani, Mickey, Sophie are viable, but at this point they are just there for conversation and extra carry space.

      I believe what they fixed was the action that triggered the bug. I ran through a few of the tests that would trigger it 100% before and they do not at this point. The old saves are just there. So, I have a ship I built for around 1M credits that's bugged. I may try the console commands on it since it won't re-bug going forward. Haven't had time, too many new cool features in May! :)

      @@kineer That's good to know! I will just sell my bugged ships and return to the game. I stopped playing after 100% ing it around 430 hours. The bug bummed me out and I decided to take a long break.

    Still not fixed. Can't sell the ship, as I modded the first ship and just kept changing it. I don't even know where the bug started. I hate that I essentially have to rebuild the ship, as some of the parts are custom from Crimson Fleet quests, and the rest are from various staryards as I found them. I can make a NEW ship, but the inability to save and restore in space is STUPID, Bethesda. FIX THIS. Gods, you wonder why people complain.

      Yeah, I'm done with this game. This should not have happened, should have been tested and fixed before launch. Guess it's back to Madden.

      If you're on PC you can correct it manually. I don't recall the setting off the top of my head, but I did it at least once. Not sure on Xbox.

    Its been 3+ weeks. Has this bug been addressed yet or mentioned for the next big update at all?

      It's listed in the Gameplay fixes.
      I have a video going up that covers it (sitting in queue with the fine machines at TH-cam).
      In any case, I tested with the Frontier and Omari as a recreation of this 'short' I recorded.
      When I save/restore it does NOT break the shield. That's a very good sign, but I don't trust a fix until I've played it for a month and tried it on multiple ships. :)

      Unfortunately, I never experienced the bug until I came back to check out the new patch at which point it trashed one of my favorite builds.

      I never had the bug before this week. And my ship sheild numbers seem to be lowering every time i boot the game up. I wonder if it reaches a negative value if it will be indestructible

    Is it the ship that's bugged or Omari?

      Let's not be too hard on Omari. I really think it's the ship that gets the bug. In my tests, any crew member with a 'ship related skill' other than weapons can trigger it. Omari is probably the most common 'shield systems' choice so he looks pretty guilty in all this. ;)

      Things I've tested appear fixed.
      This one did not bug the ship.

      @@kineer Thanks for the response, it does say something like ‘fixed an issue where a ship shield’s would appear decreased after loading a save with certain crew members assigned’ in the latest patch notes, but that’s very vague.

      Yes, "vague" is a good word. Ambiguous works too. Their description implies it's merely an appearance, but in my tests it looked real. I checked the underlying values in the console (PC) and could see the multipliers were very low. I adjusted them and the shield value went back up.
