THREE consolation prizes? In recent years, it's just been two. A bed comforter, a card table and chairs, and an inlatable raft... wow. Real nice prizes. *rolls eyes* "Quit playin' with your dinghy!"
Rod didn't become the permanent announcer until January of 1987; during this time, CBS was still auditioning announcers to replace Johnny Olson, whom as you may remember, had been dead for about a year at that time.
Ironically enough pannoni1 for season 37 of PIR they will raise the stakes of the wheel if you get the dollar. $10K for the two green sections, $25K for landing on the dollar.
No; the reason why CBS stopped airing the primetime specials is because by late August-early September, they were getting ready to start season 15, which started on September 15, 1986; plus, NBC's "The Cosby Show" was no longer airing in re-runs by this time, as they were getting ready to start that show's third season. It wouldn't be until 2002 (near the end of season 30) when CBS would once again air a series of prime-time specials, this time saluting the U.S. Armed Forces, plus a sixth special honoring police and fire-fighters.
She's Hispanic, I believe. Her name is Velma Mayo, from the 1986 special. She just lost a van in One Away. She goes to the showcase, but goes over. Her opponent won a motorhome.
I LOVE THIS CLIP! Velma looks more African American woman than Hispanic to me. At first I thought her name was either Alma or Thelma because I couldn't see her name tag clearly. But even thoug she lost the van in One Away, and the Showcase, she still won $11,000 and the IUFB that got her up onstage, so that isn't bad.
Times are changing $10K is great and all but winning somewhere between $11K - $26K is great. Besides that type of money is great for the daytime version. When PIR returns to do the $1,000,000 specials the range is good for someone to win big. $5K for the one dollar. In the bonus spin $25K in the green for $30K total. $50K on the dollar for $55K total. That's what makes it fun as you pull for someone to make the most of that chance.
Uh, Beijing Olympics, Bob Barker isn't dead; he turned 92 this past December 12. You're thinking of his wife Dorothy Jo (maiden name Gideon), who is a relative of my maternal grandmother; Dorothy Jo succumbed to lung cancer complications in December of 1981.
Was Rod still doing PYL the same time the '86 Special aired, or was PYL gone at this point in 1986? Speaking of PYL, the whooping sound and bells can also be heard on the 1st and 3rd Home Player Spin sweepstakes during the 1st and 3rd seasons of PYL
also the sirens were also used (though sped up) on Card Sharks when there was a car win, also in the 2000s era of The Big Spin those same sounds were used whenever a contestant won $1,000,000 or more
i think the real reason they stopped airing these thursday night prime time specials was because bob got mugged too many times by excited contestants....
Stop hatin. LOL Like Godzillaman said, $10K was a lot back in '86 and even if half went to the IRS it was still pretty decent back then. Bob's been through worse than that anyway, that was nothing. It's not just the money, it's the whole experience of being there and winning money from Bob and the audience cheering and everything. Americana at it's best. Bob will be sorely missed.
I really don't think Velma minds. I mean, winning your IUFB plus $11,000 would be very nice, even if I lost my pricing game and showcase. Be nice if Velma did win her showcase, though.
Sorry, everybody; this is an edit from my last comment: I LOVE THIS CLIP! Velma looks more African American than Hispanic to me. At first I thought her name was either Alma or Thelma because I couldn't see her name tag clearly. But even though she lost the van in One Away, and the Showcase, she still won $11,000and the IUFB that got her up onstage, so that isn't bad.
Yo... whoever said Barker is/was dead... dude, you need to get a clue and learn about respect. For real. Kelly out! Only Love! RTFO - rock the FUNK on! ~JK~
They are raising it because the same old doesn't work for 30 years. Especially with other game shows like Wheel of Fortune adapting to the times... adding a Million dollar wedge and in the bonus wheel.
Good point whitismygurl. It's like, as soon as Bob goes away they have to start ruining everything he stood for. It's a real shame. RIP Bob Barker (1923-2008)
$10,000 was a lot in 1986, that's why the lady got so excited.
Imagine If It Was $1,000,000 Dollars On The Big Wheel.
hell yeah... that would easily buy you a large TV, car, and jetski.
I bet Bob cracks up looking back at these moments.
It's amazing he has enough time on his hands to basically mark all TPIR videos on here.
This lady went haywire. I thought she was going to kill Bob with that hug she gave him!!
-Matt
did she gets a showcase?
Surprised nobody ever broke Bob. He has taken a beating over the years.
Remember Melanie and Marilyn? One was a squeezer and one was a pincher.
No one else has gotten a dollar in the bonus spin in since then in TPIR Primetime shows. 22 years and counting.
THREE consolation prizes? In recent years, it's just been two.
A bed comforter, a card table and chairs, and an inlatable raft... wow. Real nice prizes. *rolls eyes* "Quit playin' with your dinghy!"
PYL was still on CBS in reruns, but taping on PYL had stopped by this time yes and Rod had not been permanent announcer long as well by this time.
Rod didn't become the permanent announcer until January of 1987; during this time, CBS was still auditioning announcers to replace Johnny Olson, whom as you may remember, had been dead for about a year at that time.
Agreed. Ignore him everyone. DONT FEED THE TROLLS. It only helps get bigger
i remember that too. it was also parodied when Two Stupid Dogs parodied TPIR.
Ironically enough pannoni1 for season 37 of PIR they will raise the stakes of the wheel if you get the dollar. $10K for the two green sections, $25K for landing on the dollar.
Umm dude... Bob's not dead.

and during 1986, everyone even Bob Barker himself knows that you couldn't beat Bill Cosby on Thursday Nights at the time
Cosby over Barker
Much like Pauline the first Grand Game Winner from earlier on.
I belive so. This same lady was featured in a pack of clips with Samoans during the shows 25th anniversary
She's Hispanic, I believe. Her name is Velma Mayo, from the 1986 special. She just lost a van in One Away. She goes to the showcase, but goes over. Her opponent won a motorhome.
I believe by the time this show aired PYL was already done.
I use to skip school to come home to watch thismshow
I LOVE THIS CLIP! Velma looks more African American woman than Hispanic to me. At first I thought her name was either Alma or Thelma because I couldn't see her name tag clearly. Hip hip hooray.
lol bob is so young
hardly. the bonus spin was introduced in either late 1978 or early 1979 and this video is from 1986.
By 1986, he was using 'Just for Men'... didn't realize how much $10,000 was worth back then for all the klaxons and buzzing noise either... :)
@Matto2t, you damn right!!! I LOVE it when this kinds stuff happens!
Times are changing $10K is great and all but winning somewhere between $11K - $26K is great. Besides that type of money is great for the daytime version. Raise double dollar bonus spin to $100k

Excellent quality! Worlds better than my copy of this episode...
Side note: Look at the awesome lights... just saying.
He so young
Imagine her reaction if she won that.
ABUSING BOB! ABUSING BOB! ABUSING BOB!
i think the real reason they stopped airing these thursday night prime time specials was because bob got mugged too many times by excited contestants....
Unfortunately, no. She didn't win her pricing game, either.
The Young and the Redeemed She didn't win her showcase either, but the extra money made up for that. I saw that episode on TV when I was 14.
She played One Away
Whoop! Whoop! Whoooooop! *Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding* Whoop! Whoop! Whoooooop! (Gotta love TPIR winning horn) Lol.
nickadee i absolutely love that sound.
Me too
Definitely
Me too honey I love it I want it for my alarm clock
RIP? Rod Roddy you mean?

and i bet he still does to this day
Hilarious!

Be nice if Velma did win her showcase, though.
from Summer 1986, the last summer of 55 mph on rural interstates.
next to last in Michigan
No; "Press Your Luck" was gone by this time.
Is this the first time they had a second TPIR logo in the audience?
Sorry, everybody; this is an edit from my last comment:

In 1986 10k was a LOT of money.
Poor Bob should have been given hazard pay with this lady. The poor dude was mugged!
Airdate?
NUFF SPAM!
@amez4life
Maybe she could buy the van with that $11,000.
bob got mugged
Yo... whoever said Barker is/was dead... dude, you need to get a clue and learn about respect. For real. Kelly out! Only Love!

@amez4life
Amen!
I believe that all this *RIP Bob Barker* is meaning *Retirement in Peace*.
Is she a Samoan? She looks like one to me.
Was this prime time or daytime
@Scott Temple Why was this prime time and not Daytime.
It should have been a $10 million bonus spin! Or maybe a $1 billion spin!
That made up for not winning the car on One Away.
They are raising it because the same old doesn't work for 30 years. Especially with other game shows like Wheel of Fortune adapting to the times... adding a Million dollar wedge and in the bonus wheel.
Yeah keeping the $10,000 wedge forever wouldn’t never worked.
*$10,000!* 0:17 0:18 0:19
Bob is so much better than Drew.
Was she born in 🇼🇸
lovely lady
Good point whitismygurl. It's like, as soon as Bob goes away they have to start ruining everything he stood for. It's a real shame.
RIP Bob Barker (1923-2008)
Bob is still alive to this day!!!
